Watch KAREN SISCO!! Best New Show On TV!!

Published at:  Nov 12, 2003 8:58:05 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

I know we (and every other reputable TV critic) said so before, but none of the episodes have disappointed.

Did ya like “Out of Sight”? Did ya like “Get Shorty”? Did ya like “Jackie Brown”? “Karen Sisco,” also based on the work of Elmore Leonard, is like those, only weeekly, and – Sam Jackson notwithstanding - better actors!

ABC put it up against “Law & Order,” which is this insane juggernaut of a franchise, and word is ABC is seriously considering closing Karen down.

Don’t let it happen!! Watch “Karen Sisco”!! The best new show on TV!!

10 p.m. Wednesday. ABC.

    You're not wrong, Herc

This is, by far, one of the most entertaining shows on television. Robert Forster rocks in many, many ways, and Carla Gugino blows that Lopez chick clean out of the water. I tape record this show weekly, and watch it at least once more on the weekend, when TV sucks. All they need now is for Clooney to come back for an episode to reprise his role, and we'll be all set!

Figures though. Why let the good shows last? We need more fill ins for 'The Mullets' not intelligent shows that people actually want to watch.

    I Agree!

Karen Sisco IS the best new show of the season, hands down. It's got great characters, fun plots, outstanding acting (especially from Forster and Gugino), topnotch writing, a refreshing locale, and above all... it has a soul. Last week's episode, "Dear Derwood," was one of the most poignant episodes of just about any TV series I've ever seen. ABC would be craven and foolish to cancel the show outright, rather than try to nurture it in a more fertile timeslot. > I've been worried all along that this show would be too good to last. Let's keep our fingers crossed....

    This show sucks

    by spoons

I'd watch Gugino in almost anything, but this show is terrible. The "kindler, gentler" Karen Sisco doesn't work. JLo's character was a hard ass. Guigno would be perfect for that kind of role. Why are the writers making her a wuss? I keep watching, hoping it will get better, but....

I haven't watched L&O at all this season, and I've been watching weekly for years and years. Why not this season? Karen Cisco. Best show in years. If you're a fan of this show, pick up books by Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen, and the other South Florida mystery writers. I've spent time there, and learned that the characters aren't exagerations. Those fucked up people are REAL!

    by koomoreborn

I've tried this show a few times and it never holds my interest for more than a commercial break. For what it's worth, I've read just about everything Elmore's done (started with him when he released "Stick"), and I thought SS's Out of Sight was bland, Jackie Brown forgettable, and Get Shorty a loose but fun adaptation. I thought Out of Sight was one of the weakest books by Leonard. (My top 3 are City Primeval, Freaky Deaky, and Split Images.) Want a great South Florida crime movie? Watch Miami Blues. Meanwhile, I think the best show on TV right now is (gasp) Smallville. Not one weak moment all season.

More programming aimed at chicks... and Herc..

    by silver shamrock

The Bachelor lead in was a clue. You people that like the show, ask yourselves this question: Is it really that good, something to get really rabid over, or is it just that everything else (Skin, The OC, Joan of Arcadia, Miss Match, Tru Calling, Threat Matrix, Lyon's den, I'm With Her, etc.) suck so bad??

    Karen is better than Tru

    by parnellbc

I'm mostly a genre viewer. I tune into the Sci-Fi,Angel&Buffy,Alias type programming. The news is full of cops, docs and lawyers drama so I don't need that stuff fictionalized. The reality of those professions does a good job making newsworthy drama for me to not tune in. However, I've seen all but one Karen Sisco and been pleased each time. Yes, Carla Gugino is hot but the stories have been fun. Not revolutionary story telling but fun. This show deserves the opportunity to survive at least a year to see what can develop futher. The opposite can be said for Eliza Dushku's "Tru Calling". This show is tired cliche from start to finish. Its that damned CBS show "Early Edition" that reruns on PAX and lasted what 3years too long. I'd rather have seen Miss Dushku do ER(which I still wouldn't watch) than do this lame ass piece of work. I really wanted to like Tru but it blows. I had no expectations for Sisco and find it enjoyable. Flip over to Karen at nine/ten talkbackers after "Angel" is over.

You people don't deserve a show this good....

    by jimmy jazz

Lopez was a Barbie doll. Gugino's Sisco is the real deal. "Kinder and Gentler" my ass. There has never been a female TV character quite like Sisco. She's tough, sexy and surpremely cool. In fact, it's this professional demeanor and laconic personalty is what makes her the antithesis of the "Chick show" female character. SHe's more Gary Cooper than Ally McBeal. That is why it has a hard time finding an audience. SHe's offputting to women used to wimpy sob sisters and men are just scared shitless of her. Nor is it a Law and Order style procedural. It's not so much a crime show so much as it is a character study. That's what makes the characters in this show much more interesting than your colorless Law & Order automatons. But people don't like new things. So stay with your sitcoms, game shows and fossilized "RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES" crap. This show was too good to last.

  • I've been checking out Karen Sisco, and Herc is right, it is teriffic and well written. WAY too good for ABC. Do I have to list all the great shows ABC has cancelled over the years? "Twin Peaks" and "My So Called Life" are the most notorious. Then there was "Sports Night" and "It's Like, You Know..." whose cancellations resulted in my one year boycott of ABC where I missed all the episodes of "Gideon's Crossing" which I heard many good things about. Right now the only ABC shows I watch are "Alias" and "Karen Sisco" and I suspect both are on the bubble again.

Unfortunately, this show should be cancelled. Here's why.

    by no, i'm right

THINGS I DON'T LIKE: Guigino's six-head. Bad casting. She looks like a martian ... Forster is too stiff. I loved him in Jackie Brown because that character was stiff. But loosen up man! ... The chemistry is not there between Karen and dad. Yet ... They basically re-wrote Out of Sight for the pilot. I would prefer to think of the movie as where we last saw Karen ... There is no effective recurring foil for Karen, like Clooney. Maybe this is yet to come though ... If they were going to so blatantly rip off the style of the movie, they should have done the stop motion shots. That was cool in the movie ... flashback scenes are stupid. I hate those ... Token black police chief has been done a million times. I liked this guy in Predator. Every movie he's done since then he's been "Detective Malone" or whatever ... I liked Karen's style in Out of Site better. She looked cool. I dunno about Guigino ... I wanted to see Karen throw down. Guigino ddin't convince me. I still think she is an actress trying to play tough.
    ...............
THINGS I DID LIKE: ... The new transfer guy that played the boss in Office Space. His acting in the pilot was great, very subtle. That scene at the end where Karen tells the kid to quit - the subtle way Office-Space-guy looked at her in awe. Very cool ...The music was cool, but it's just re-tooled David Holmes stuff. Do yourself a favor and go get the soundtrack to the movie for the real deal. ... The opening credits I liked. They stole that from the promo campaign from the movie. ... The Isley Bros opening music. Straight from the movie. ...Some of the dialog is clever. (Barely.)
    ...............
CONCLUSION: This show has potential, but I don't think it has enough chemistry to make it.

She's polar opposites with SMG, who never in a kajillion years could pull off a line like, "It's like ridin' a biker." Those Season 4 episodes of Angel she guest starred in owned everyone's ass and you all know it.

Here's one regular viewer. If ABC shuts this show down, I think it's safe to say I'm just giving up on TV all together. Anything decent gets shut down with no chance to grow. But Who Wants To Marry an Average Joe Millionaire Bachelor? Let's make more of those for sure!

Besides looking at Carla Gugino (who I wouldn't mind seeing in handcuffs), this show is flat out boring. I would have rather seen Leonard develope a series around Michael Keaton's smarmy FBI agent - now that would be cool.

    by the_pissboy1

I saw the first episode. It tried so hard to be cool. Jazzy music, jump cuts, freeze frames. It was so self-concious, yet not aware that it all came off as trite. One of the things that made Out of Sight sensational was the snappy dialogue and humor. This ass of a show has no sense of humor and use clunky dialogue. It's all preening and nothing worthwhile - essentially it's more of a Thomas Crowne Affair ripoff.

    Too Good for ABC

    by jamiecotc

Why anyone would trust their show to ABC is beyond me. If it's good and just a little different from the standard, it won't last on ABC. Shouldn't a memo go out to all prospective writers and creators, "Avoid ABC at all costs!"

    It is a pity.

    by stereocraft

OK, yeah I have had a crush on Carla since I first saw her in the Son in Law and loved her when she was on Spin City (for too short a time), but even then this is a great show.
I love her kick ass attitude and that she is actually less of a pushover than her character in the movie. This version of Karen would never give a guy that she is attracted too any kind of a break.
