I feel cheated. I grew up thinking that Boba Fetts and the Mandalorian super commandoes would be the new (old) Stormtroopers- That I would see a sprawling epic saga if great struggles and heroics within a backdrop of the devastatingly glorious Clone Wars, I would see thousands of Jedi fighting (Braveheart/ LOTR style) Dark Jedi and Sith Lords- Just the thought would blow me away, and I couldn't wait for the premiere of the fabled NEW STAR WARS FILM that was not set to upen until the late 90's- What an unbearable wait- I could not wait---
    but now---
but now--- Lucasfilm takes the easy way out- Ewoks-style: ANIMATED- CELL ANIMATED!!! Not even a decent Final Fantasy style animation, no, it's PowerPuff-level...

    by st.buggering

You are neanderthals. If creating "Samurai Jack" is not appropriate experience for making a Star Wars animated series, then I don't know what is. CGI, indeed. It's people like you who are killing traditional cel animation...if it doesn't look real, you don't want to be bothered. What a bunch of australopithecines. I'll take a unique art style over a computerized attempt to mimic reality any day, and I salute Lucas for having the vision to give Tartakovsky the shot. Go Genndy.

  • ...It rocked. Even without the music and sound effects. When I first looked at the character designs, I thought, "Okay, this is going to suck huge," but it doesn't. Tartakovsky and his team of animators made a better STAR WARS movie in 3 minutes than George Lucas did in his entire last two films. I have a theory that Luca$ kept these episodes so short so they wouldn't upstage his films. Well, guess what, George? They still did.

A villainess in Star Wars! Cool! Okay, the show's description sounds like it'll mostly be action and largely an extended version of the last act of AotC, but in a way that limitation is almost liberating for me. Little bits like the Anakin/Padme parting in the documentary sort of click with unexpected emotion. And who knows, maybe George will be moved to focus on his great characters again...assuming the cartoon doesn't repeat his mistakes and...oh fuck it, enough negativity, I'm happy to be a fan again! And Genndy has said they may even do more than the planned 20 episodes!

    by whiskeylips

Having seen the first ten episodes already, I can tell you that it totally kicks ass! Because they are only 3 minutes they are very action oriented. The action is so stylized the you just want to soak up every second and pick out the cool little details. If you liked Samurai Jack even a little, you'll eat this up. Way better than the new movies. Just check in for your three minutes fixes every night for the next 2 weeks and I guarantee these talkbacks will be filled with slobbering fans (and internet haters who believe anything created after they were ten years old could never possibly be as good their rose-colored childhood memories).

In the same way that the Batman animated series was a million times better than any of the movies I think the Clone Wars will be better than the Prequels. I love the Friday Night line up on Cartoon Network! It's like Saturday Morning Cartoons used to be! Doubly nice that I can get that weekly dosage of cartoons before going out for a big weekend instead of missing them by sleeping in the next day. I'm doubly pumped that they've chosen Friday Night to be the slot to launch the Clone Wars cartoons. I really am surprised at the backlash in this forum. GT's animation is nothing short of groundbreaking (Samurai Jack). If anything, it is artistic. If anything, doing a CG cartoon these days is mailing it in. Great choice of animators, I can't wait to check out this series.

    by mpjedi2

Who continue to pine for something that only existed in the fevered imaginations of a bunch of fanboys. Were Mandalorians/Boba Fett involved in the Clone Wars? Yes! Take at look at AOTC, they're _right there!_ I can't find, or remember _any_ official Lucasfilm releases on the Prequels until they actually went into production, and then it was simply production info. Now, on the other hand, there were, and still are, _dozens_ of fan speculation articles and non-cannon novels that present ideas. Lucas has _no obligation_ to ahere to these speculations any more than the Star Trek does to it's myriad "expanded universe" storylines. Cannon is what is placed _on screen_ in a Lucasfilm production. So all of this bitching and moaning about what we were "promised" is just hogwash. When did we, as an audience decide that we no longer wanted to be surprised? That we wanted all movies, or any other sort of drama to unfold in a way that was utterly predictable? I guess Hollywood is right, we are all idiot lemmings who will only be happy when we know _exactly_ how a movie will end when it starts.

I hated how they took these great Sci-Fi characters and placed them in inane jokey cartoon plots. Reply to Talkback

  • I have all 13 Droids episodes on DVD (burned of course) and I am still amazed at the quality of animation. The 3 Roon episodes were pretty good. A bit darker than the rest and written by Ben Burtt & Paul Dini (Batman Beyond). The Great Heap 2-parter looks VERY Japanese at times. I would say the 2 "Heap" episodes almost rival some current anime as far as quality goes. Too bad that during the "Reagan Years", there was no freedom in animation. The Stormtroopers carry laser-firing staffs instead of guns in the Droids shows! This was the decade of Garfield, Smurfs and Care Bears....Ugh!

    Expansion

    by kidcharlemagne

Amidala had some nice cleavage going on. Beyond that, where is the expansion. Shouldn't the first episode, the heavily hyped first episode, weave together the ongoing storyline by concretely introducing new characters and situations. We see dozens of shots of the seemingly familiar, but no explanations. I'd rather they jumped into whatever they are leading to, and utilized a series of interspersed flashbacks to set up. The end does leave us (the die-hards) wanting more, but not the cliffhanger that will ensure the return of the casual. I can't wait until monday at 8.

This cartoon ruled for how long of a time it was given!

    by screenplaywriter

I hate the fact that it's only 5 minutes long and not 25, or more, but damn those 5 minutes were action-packed. We got to see ships being destroyed, Sasee Tiin blowing up hoardes of battle droids, and the clonetroopers, Yoda, Mace Windu, Anakin, Luminara, and the rest doing their thing. I loved it!

And the voice-actors weren't that bad. I thought they matched the characters nicely and plus we didn't get to hear/see Hayden Christiansen's bad acting coming out of Anakin's mouth which was a BIG, BIG plus. So in conclusion I give this new cartoon a 10/10 and look forward to the next chapters and when this comes out I'll put it with my "ANIMATRIX" DVD as the best movies-turned-to-cartoons-spot up there with "THE NINJA TURTLES."

    The Changeling

    by st.buggering

I don't care if you're Walt Disney. Working in animation doesn't mean that you "know what you're talking about". Just because the series is based on something that used real actors, it doesn't mean that photorealism is the way to go. That's like saying that any movie based on a comic book should use static panels and word balloons instead of live action. These days, a CGI cartoon is a no-brainer; everyone's doing it. No matter how good the CGI work was, it would never have fully matched the actors anyway. By going with the iconic line drawing style, they sidestep that problem (see Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics for a whole holding-forth on the subject of iconism vs realism...it's an eye-opener). Hiring Tartakovsky was a bold artistic choice, and the fact that fans are bitching about it shows how little interest they really have in artistic worth. Apparently, none of you will be happy until everything looks like The Matrix.

    by wespantime

yeah, that short bit of animation had, in its 180 second brevity, an astronomically higher awesome factor than all 4 hours of lucas' latest colostamy bag emptyings, the prequels. i'm praising jobu that these little vignettes exist 'cause, for the last few years, i'd been debating pulling the respirator plug on the ailing star wars fan whose bedside vigil i've been at since '99. his condition got worse in '02 and his prognosis ain't good. I desperately want him to recover but a certain flannel-wearing doctor insists on filling his IV's with urine. Oh, and how awesome was that shot of Obi-wan and anakin leaping out of the gunship as the camera followed them to their landing amidst an army of super battle droids? two valiant jedi knights leaping into battle, proceeding to kick the shit out of baddies; that's all i ask for. I'd hoped the prequels would feature that kind of smile-inducing badassness and not extended scenes of a teenage anakin fartin' it up on a conveyor belt.

In regards to your comment about how they should have gone CG yada yada yada....get a grip. CG is worn out, and frankly insults my artistic sensabilities. I know they are trying for photorealistic, so when they fail it actually pisses me off. I am MUCH happier with this format. And your comment about how since it is based on real actors so it HAD to be CG...wow...not even sure where to start on that one. So by that same measure there should never be a comic book based on a live action movie...no video games based on a live action movie...the list is endless.

    send in the clones

    by kingmidget

I thought it was excellent. GT can really make visually interesting films. I love that it is done in traditional cel animation. It seems to me that cg animators think they've done their job when they've made their work look as photo realistic as possible. But I believe that the point of animation is to create a world that doesn't exist and to do things that can't be done in reality. So why strive for realism in animation? If you want realism go make a live action film.
As for the short, the two best parts were the overhead shot of Anakin heading for his ship with his long black cape fluttering behind him, making him look very much like Vader. The second is the exchange between Anakin and Padme. It made me very excited to see the next installment. I only wish it had been a little longer, maybe ten minutes, so that it could get a little more of a story going. It seemed like a prologue you would see at the start of a regular half hour show.

(it was rather silly) And the person I watched it with was laughing at the Padme'/Anakin exchange. God I really hate Haden Christenson's hair in clones (the film), it just doesn't fit the motife at all - it cries TEEN BEAT. This is supposed to be the weakest of the episodes, so there is hope.

Pluses and minuses of the three minute format

    by tall_boy

The "Macro-series" serialized idea is pretty cool in concept. It takes a cue from the serials that Star Wars was inspired from, which is really cool. The problem is at 3 minutes the audience ends up feeling cheated. They should have just finished the whole thing and aired it as a TV movie. However I guess the bean counters realized "hey, we can sell more widgets by airing three minutes a week!" Hell Lucas originally wanted ONE minute shots but the Samuri Jack creator said make it three or else people would riot. If they were longer and serialized, it might have worked. Good idea, lousy execution. (However that did offer a nice mini-teaser: NEXT TIME - CHAPTER TWO. **two second long shot of ships going apeshit ROTJ style** It basically tells the audience "SHIT HAPPENS! BOOM BOOM!" to keep them comming back.) The format does allow for cutting out alot of bullshit and getting down to the nitty gritty. But once again, they shoulda just done the whole thing in one shot.

Format bitching aside, you're either going to love the character designs or think they're ugly and stupid looking. It animated in a blocky, thick lined style ala Samuri Jack, Powerpuff Girls and the Clerks cartoon. It took me about 20 seconds to get into it. It looks different and its an original stylized take on the designs. And it looks alot nicer than the crappy horrible attempts at "reality" that the Ewoks, Droids and Holiday Specials had.

The frame aragements are just jammed with stuff that zips by, but the opening battle in 30 seconds felt more like the original trilogy than the prequels have done in 4+ hours full length movies. Great angles and prespectives abound (check out the bombs being dropped and cut back to the guy in the cockpit and the explosion behind him, very nicely done). Also there's a nice nod to "A New Hope" when the clone fighters are being refuled thats taken directly from the original star wars movie way back from '77.

In the end its a cool and different thing to do. Chopping the thing up into three minute segments has its own benefits and drawbacks, lets see if they can keep it coherent and zippy pacing up throughout all 20 episodes. It'll still work alot better as a full length feature, eventually.

    by gilliamxlii

Lucas got something right, the first thing since 1983. He handed over the reins to somebody else who knows how to tell a better story. The first episode of the Clone Wars shorts is by far alone, in its 3 minutes of glory, a quadrazillion times better then Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

I really liked the stylish animation, the whole wide screen look of it, the stirring soundtrack (certainly lifted directly from the Episode 2 soundtrack); the short was brimming with the potential to take the audience for a wild ride. It just ended before episode could actually begin. In a way it felt like watching Attack of the Clones for the first time: it was a collection of clips from a larger film, or series of films, that were released somewhere else, perhaps in an alternate dimension. These clips hint at the details of a greater story, covering the highlights, but never actually getting into the proper story itself. Guess we'll just have to buy the action figures and fill in the details ourselves.

I really hope this gets better

    by pagz

Well, I watched the first episode, and when it was all done, one word kept floating through my head: Garbage. And it's not because it's cel-animated (which I think was a brilliant move) and it's not because of the style (although I thoroughly dislike the character design) it's because it's just really silly. Yoda "surfing" a would-be TaunTaun? The lame ass battle sequence? The mile a minute dialogue in Palpatine's office (I really felt like they were talking as fast as they could so we wouldn't notice that everything they were saying was purile)? The slapstick moment where the robe flies onto 3PO? the sappy as hell shot of Padme looking at Anakin through the window?

I really wanted to like the clone wars, but alas. I sincerely hope that it's just this first episode that blows hard.

They're showing all 10 episodes Friday night in two half-hour blocks. Thank god for TiVo; I probably wouldn't have known that.

Mandalorian commandoes are mentioned the description of the Boba Fett figure, so clearly Lucas had that idea at some point, they are not just fan speculation. I think the point is that Lucas pretends that there is some grand idea for this series, and there isn't he changes his mind all the time, usually to the detriment of the series. I think it is a very sad commentary that most of the fanboy speculation is actually more interesting than Lucas's final product.

    Mandalorians...

    by zerocorpse

If you ever actually read any Star Wars books (and not just EU), you'd know the Mandalorian wars were about four thousand years before Anakin's time, even before the Sith wiped themselves out. The Mandalorians (it's the name of a species, not an organization) are a dying race. In fact, Jango Fett may have been all that was left of their teachings, and he wasn't a true Mandalorian... Just adopted by them. The movies (and novelizations) don't ever make any insinuation that the Clone Wars involved Mandalorians at all. They're called "Clone Wars" for a reason... It's the largest, longest galactic war in the last 3500 years! Just for some history- The Mandalorians were a warlike race who sought battle for it's honor and glory. They made it a habit to attack worlds and test themselves in combat. This was the basis of the Mandalorian War. They did some major damage to the galaxy, but took a lot of casualties in the process since they were on the Jedi's bad side. In the end, the Mandalorians became wanderers, criminals, mercenaries and thugs- Always looking for an opportunity to see combat. If you expected a group of "Boba Fetts" fighting a bunch of Jedi, you're wrong- and I don't know how you could ever have gotten that idea. The second trilogy and the novelizations make it pretty clear that Boba Fett is wearing Mandalorian ARMOR, but that he's most likely not a Mandalorian himself, and has no resource for any replacement parts for his armor because it's the last of it's kind (and VERY old, in fact). That kind of indicates that the Mandalorians are extinct by Luke's time, and have been for a very long time. Sorry if the real story isn't "badass" enough for you. Maybe you should go back to watching THE MATRIX.

I wish they could just make 20 more episodes

    by mortsleam

Release them as a movie and then we could pretend that Phantom Menace never happened. I'm glad CartoonNetwork.com lets you watch the mini-sodes after they air, 'cause it gets frustrating that they're only really getting the story up to speed when they have to end. This is as close as I'll come to even thinking about the possibility of contemplating seeing the final prequel in the theaters.

    These Are Not Fun

    by george newman

I was really looking forward to these but as of chapter 2, I am severely disappointed. It is just too fast. I am as big a star wars fan as the next geek but this is ridiculous. It looks cool at least.

Still, only seeing the first two episodes I think this is better than I/II combined. That doesn't necessarily mean it's very good.

    Mandalorean VS. Jedi

    by sithlord_999

"If you expected a group of "Boba Fetts" fighting a bunch of Jedi, you're wrong- and I don't know how you could ever have gotten that idea"
ZEROCORPSE: You seem to know your EU. Fine. Let's suppose that EU is correct. I know some EU, and it is in the form of the "Empire Strikes Back" Novelization.
Now, student, turn to page 125, halfway through the second paragraph it reads: "... the notorious Boba Fett. A human bounty hunter, Fett was known for his extremely ruthless methods. He was dressed in a weapon-covered, armored spacesuit, the kind worn by a group of evil warriors defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars..."
Now, turn to the ORIGINAL Star Wars Galaxy Guide #3, page 56, second column. What does it read: "Boba Fett wears a weapon-covered armored spacesuit similar to those favored by a group of warriors from the Mandalore System who were defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars..."
So know, to answer your question, who ever gave me the idea of "Boba Fetts" fighting Jedi Knights, ESPECIALLY during the CLONE WARS. I didn't invent it, I can tell you that for sure.

----I can only hope that the DAMN CARTOONS DO NOT SHOW the Jedi fighting some Mandaloreans- like some afterthought, (hell, even if it takes center stage, it would be an afterthought, a joke, similarly to the way the novel Slaughterhouse Five keeps reminding the reader that the author will talk about Edgar Derby who was executed for stealing a teapot after the entire city of Dresden was destroyed in a bombing raid- and how it was ultimately tacked on, merely mentioning it at the end of the book- this is exactly how these new movies, and ancillary merchandise {EU books, comics, cartoons} seem, an afterthought, and a joke [and not even Vonnegut funny], especially when dealing with the "central theme"... The Clone Wars.

It is my belief that most fans ----pre-CGI/SE/TPM/AOTC--- have fled Tatooine in horror and migrated into Middle Earth... I know I have. Good luck to you all who have stayed behind. I hope it's worth your while.
---Sithlord999 (ok, I'll change my ID name to WraithLord999---)

{PS -Darth Sarcasm, thanks for your post-)

    SithLord vs ZeroCorpse

    by st.buggering

This whole conversation is getting Trekkier by the minute. That's one of the downsides of so much material being put out over the years. As the Extended Universe expands, more and more of it is bound to contradict itself. We all saw this happen with Star Trek many years ago. Of course, Roddenberry gave the novels and comics carte blanche with the proviso that the movies and series would ignore all of it. Lucas was supposedly keeping a tighter reign, but of course, details slip through. Anyone who expects all of the material to be consistent and true to the universe is fooling themselves. As far as I'm concerned, if it isn't in the movies, it doesn't exist; and that includes the novelizations. Believe me, it makes things easier in the long run.

    by azlam orlandu

At least some things haven't changed, you nerds still bitch and cry about Star Wars the way you would for your Mommy's tit back in '77. Do you even realize how you sound?

I still really enjoy Star Wars, but I refuse to discuss anything with your diaper-wearing asses.

Have fun or get over it losers. There's more to life than what Lucas doesn't even owe you.

Oh and Clone Wars PT3 was fucking great!
