SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Arrested Development,” likely the season’s best-reviewed series, sounds so good I wish they made it an hourlong – so its fate wouldn’t rest at the mercy of “Malcolm in the Middle’s” youthful audience.

TV Guide says:

… has bite, wit and a sophisticated sting. Shown withoiut a laugh track, it’s the smartest and sharpest comedy of this – or last – season.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… easily the smartest, funniest and most original new comedy of the season …

Variety says:

Critics and viewers clamoring for something unique since the sesh began back in August finally have something to champion ... and boy, is it funny. … and writer-creator Mitchell Hurwitz have drummed up terrific energy, drawing humor from even the randomness of discussions -- anything to do with bro George's magic career, for example, is odd and hilarious.

Entertainment Weekly gives it an “A” and says:

… gloriously atypical, most notably for how it elicits deep, involuntary diaphragmatic convulsions. I don't know about you, but I'm not used to laughing out loud alone in front of the TV. Honestly, I was startled.

USA Today gives it three stars (out of four) and says:

… heaven-sent for anyone who has longed for something, anything, a little outside the comedy norm. Well, actually, you'd better want to go pretty far outside the norm, because Arrested is certainly out there. … I could live without George Michael's crush on his first cousin, a story given more prominence in a future episode when it really needs less. … But for now, I'd say stick with the Bluths, even when their behavior is more alarming than arresting.

9:30 p.m. Sunday. Fox.

I am – Hercules!!

I hate to say it, but yeah. Firefly, Andy Rickter, the list of excellent shows FOX has prematurely given the axe is too painful to think about. I swear, the post-X Files-era FOX *wants* to have crummy ratings. Safe, tepid, predictable programming did not create the smashing success of either The Simpsons or the X Files. But that's what FOX TV thinks now, apparently. Grr.

  • The Tick was stupid. It made no sense to make a live action series when the original was funny cause it was animated. Just stupid. Greg the Bunny occassionally threw something out there that was funny, but overall the show was boring. Andy Richter was great, very funny. It should never have been cancled.

Dontcha wanna level with us why you don't do an SNL talkback anymore? Trouble from NBC? Time zone giveaways? (East coast could comment before west coast could see the show?) YOU have the power. Last night's, with Kelly Ripa, was a bit better than usual. And Chris Kattan came back. Oh, well. P.S. Rachel Dratch has beautiful breasts. That is all.

I only caught the Weekend Update which was pretty bad. I think Tina Fey is a clever sketch writer but the update just resorts to mean-spirited and tasteless jokes about natural disasters and death. Plus it's funny how they keep ripping-off Norm McDonald jokes.

    by hardcorerocker

I still can't get over everyone thinking The Simpsons suck. I laughed at least 10 times in both of those episodes. Especially during the Death one. The scroll says Marge to ominous music. "Not that! Anything but that!" It switches to say Homer. "Um...what was that first one again?" It switches back to Marge and the ominous music returns. Classic Simpsons timing. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. www.rockithardcore.com

I was suprised at how much I liked it

    by 007-11

When things worked they really worked. David Cross and the gay pirates were the best, what a great set-up. Also they managed to keep everyone from being a stereotype, there were some crossovers into that territory, but not enough to keep me from liking the show. Also, Portia Dirossi(I know i'm not spelling that right) isn't just attractive when shown in relation to Calista Flockhart, she's incredibly good looking all by herself. I'll be back next week.

I don't know if this one will disappear as fast as everyone is claiming. This show has seriously been applauded by nearly all the tv critics around. I mean, Fox is stupid, but are they that stupid? I watched the show tonight and thought it was hilarious. Great characters, great writing, great style. Hope it's around for a long time. Now if only we were a Nielson home . . .

I applaud this show for going without a laughtrack. My favorite comedies: Scrubs and the Simpsons both go without. Do we really need to be told what we are supposed to laugh at?

Funniest. Show. Ever. Whatever happened to Eli, anyway ? As for Portia DiRossi - she's just hot because she's a full on lesbo, man. Can't wait for the very special episode where Jason Bateman's sister hooks up with Portia. Mmmm, mmm Good.

    ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN

    by kungfumanchu

FOX has such an odd ability to produce & then kill good shows, you'd best record this if you like it,'cause it's too good to last long. They've done this since their early days(anybody remember Bakersfield P.D.?)& just recently sat on Reno 911 for 2 years before letting it go to COMEDY CENTRAL(good move, huh?).While I guess you've got to give FOX some credit for trying these shows,I believe I'd go with a more nurturing cable network if I was shopping a "smart" show like the ones mentioned in these talkbacks.Prime example:Futurama.Shit on FOX,golden on CARTOON NETWORK.Of course, when you're Rupert Murdoch, who really gives a fuck anyway?

Come on, this show was not very funny at all.

    by smeg for brains

The only thing I laughed at was the look on the boy's face when his dad said that he would have to share his room with his female cousin, whom he was obviously attracted to. I'll watch it at least once more, as this was just the first episode, but it wasn't funny. It wasn't awful either. It didn't make me shake my head and feel embarassed that I watched it, like Coupling did, but there were no laughs to be had until that scene at the end.

    Yes this show is funny!

    by hjermsted

I feel bad for people who can't follow the humor in the dialogue and the rhythm of the delivery. This show (so far) is fantastic and I am amazed at how quickly the cast has gelled. Mike Myer and Jim Carrey fans probably won't get it since the actors don't mug for the camera and make funny faces when they tell their jokes (the next worst thing to laugh tracks). Arrested Development is subtle, well-written and superbly timed comedy. -mattro

    Very smart, but not funny

    by vinylsaurus

I'm glad David Cross is getting paid (1st "Oliver Beane" and now this -- what a scam!). This felt like "Ron Howard does Wes Anderson" or something and it's a mistake to try and have one likeable, nice guy riding herd over his screwed-up family. They should *all* be messed up, but likeable -- great job casting Jeffery Tambor as he's probably the only one here who can pull that off. Rich creative types in therapy (i.e. everyone in the Hollywood production food chain) probably thought this was a brilliant high-concept. "dude, that is so just like my life!" Nice try but it doesn't hold a candle to "Malcom"

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who felt the palpable Wes Anderson influence. Wew. Looks like I have another sharp and funny show to add to my quiver of televisual gold. Hurray for the quick wit and charm of Crossy, Jefferey Tambor and Jason Bateman. That George Michael is pretty funny and natural as well. ("Oh, I thought you meant of the things we eat.") And, hurray for Portia de Rossi and Alia Shawkat (legally and illegally hot, respectively).

    by timtimsalabim

Mildly funny at best. David Cross is wasted. I'm beginning to think Bob was the funnier part of that duo anyway. And do we have to see these endless previews of "hey, t-bone"? It wasn't even funny the first time. Oh, I get it, ironic that he's having a great time in prison, a real laugh riot. Can't wait til that episode. Yeah, right.

Thought it would be funnier, but...

    by njmagician

The commercials for the show made me laugh out loud so I decided to give it a chance. It definitely had its funny moments, especially when Jason Bateman's character is talking to his entire family (the facial expressions and reaction shots are priceless) but overall it was not as good as I had hoped. Some of the funniest scenes from the commercial were not even in this episode, but I guess that will just force me to continue watching the show. As for Malcolm in the Middle which was on before Arrested Development, it was much funnier than the latter show and I can see why it has lasted for four years now(?) The show is consistently funny and always entertaining. If Arrested Development fails to pan out, I will at least always have Malcolm to fall back on.

    by dr. sid schaefer

Remember that one? With Jay Mohr and Illeana Douglas? Pure, twisted genius. Of course, it was sooo funny, Fox had to cancel it. That, and Andy Richter, too. Maybe we'll get 'em on DVD one day. As for Arrested Development? Well, it has potential. But, I have to agree with a couple of the other posters who said it didn't exactly live up to the hype. We'll see...
