Sam Raimi - 'I would love to do the 4th Evil Dead film!'

Harry here, somewhere in this world monkeys are set to fly out of Bruce Campbell's Ass cuz tonight at the opening night of ScreamFest in Los Angeles, Sam Raimi said, "He'd love to do the 4th Evil Dead film!"

Ok - that was part of an answer to the question from the audience to Sam regarding what he was up to next after SPIDER-MAN 2. I've heard that Sony has already got Sam committed to doing SPIDER-MAN 3, though that hasn't officially broke yet. However, after SPIDER-MAN 2 thrashes every record that SPIDER-MAN set and as excitement reaches the TILT stage with SPIDER-MAN 3... there's a strong chance that the 4th EVIL DEAD could happen. How?

For one, Raimi's stock in Hollywood is soaring due to his deft direction of SPIDER-MAN and let's face it, SPIDER-MAN 2 is just going to own us all. After SPIDER-MAN 3, Sam could easily be in the position of saying... that he wants to make the EVIL DEAD film that they never made... the fully financed, holy rat fuck, that's too fucking cool for words EVIL DEAD film. The one that says, well Quentin Tarantino got away with that absurd over the top gore... now it is time for Ash to get some!

Basically there are two problems that I see standing in the way of this happening. 1) Dino DeLaurentis owns the title EVIL DEAD (though Bruce and associates own the rights to the "ASH" character. 2) ASH isn't yet a mainstream icon.

With yesterday's confirmation, of what Bruce Campbell has been saying in Radio interviews and such regarding the genius that is BUBBA HO-TEP, that New Line is looking seriously at doing the ASH VS FREDDY & JASON... well there's that question... Is New Line that smart?

Will New Line use two of their Horror icons to leverage into uber-light ASH... To make ASH a name on par with Freddy & Jason, then... Finance the Comedy Horror Epic of all time... Directed by Sam Raimi and starring the one true Bruce to end all Bruces... BRUCE CAMPBELL?!?!?!?!?

I can't imagine the monkey that would look Sam Raimi in the face after he makes Sony 3 Billion Dollars with Spider-Man... and telling Sam, "No, we don't want to finance your dream version of EVIL DEAD!" And if there are monkeys standing in the way of this... gas up the chainsaw and let's see them monkey suits flow crimson!

The big key for Bruce has been whether or not Sam would ever want to do another EVIL DEAD after he was off in Marvel Comics Land. Well, in the midst of shooting SPIDER-MAN 2 -- he's dreaming of doing a 4th Evil Dead flick!

So here we are... Sam is thinking of the same dream film we always are here at AICN... EVIL DEAD 4! Now, somebody needs to get Bruce Campbell on CONAN O'BRIEN so he can conquer the known world with his cosmic charisma! How could you not want Bruce Campbell on your TV show talking about Ossie Davis as JFK and him playing Elvis fighting a redneck Mummy in an old folks home? That's TV COMEDY GOLD! Leno should know that. Letterman should know that. And God Damn It, even that tall mop of a jock Stern should know that!

Thanks goes out to Eli Roth for sending in his report from Raimi's screening of SPIDER-MAN and ARMY OF DARKNESS at SCREAMFEST!

4th films are generally downhill, but...

    by phasmatrope

...we do kinda NEED another film in the Evil Dead series, since when you really think about it, the famous 2nd one was really just a remake of the first (and which would set the mold for the blood & black comedy & one-liners tone of Army Of Darkness... whereas the first Evil Dead was really more of a typical gory horror film). The obvious response to any studio head's ambivalence to fund a movie like this with a B-lister like Campbell (hey, I love the guy too, but he sure as shit ain't pullin' in $20 mill. per flick) would be to give the supporting roles to more recognizable Hollywood character actor types, like Steve Buscemi or Dafoe or whoever. And while I'm sure they could do some awesome Medieval or post-apocalyptic carnage in this next one (depending on what the setting is), having some great undead creatures and gore created by such genre talents as Rick Baker or the KNB group, you also have to accept that a series like this isn't MEANT to operate as big-budget entertainment. Case in point, in Army Of Darkness, it's all the more FUNNY that some of the bloodthirsty undead skeletons "leaping" at Ash in the fight scenes are completely immobile, that the act of being broken over his knee is the most animated that they get. The drive-in campiness is part of these films' charm. Once they start trying to gloss things over, hiring ILM to do the effects, creating a "hip" soundtrack featuring new music by System Of A Down and Slipknot and all that shit, selling it as a pure horror film, they'll kill the qualities that have made these films so endearing to us.

    by godoffireinhell

The probelm of a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash flick would be coming up with a halfway decent script. I mean they took 10 years to come up with the laughable script for Freddy vs. Jason ... And if you've read the last few Fangorias you know that there were much, much worse scripts written for that one. If they can somehow nail it, I'll be first in line but honestly I doubt it is possible. Freddy vs. Jason has been a concept that's been around for a decadem, a dream of horror fans. Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash is a very recent "dream" of money greedy studio executives. But as I said, if it helps EVIL DEAD 4, I won't complain.

    by Margot Tenenbaum

...has to start out with a mini-remake of the previous films (like 2 & 3). I want to see totally overproduced new versions of scenes from ED2 and Army of Darkness packed with ridiculous celebrity cameos, all leading up to a new version of the "I slept too long" ending. If it doesn't violate series continuity in the first ten minutes, it's not an Evil Dead film.

this should be kept low budget. If the studioes start throwing serious money at it they'll invariably "take an interest" and they'll end up fucking it up completly. You know it. They'll insist on a serious love interest or cute kid or black sidekick or something equally lame. On another note, i've never seen the supermarket ending but it sounds much funnier than the post apocalypse ending so i'd be happy if they went with that as a start for Evil Dead 4.

    by sneakstyle2000

Making a 4th Evil Dead film would be a mistake. It would screw up the ratio of silliness to horror, with Evil Dead being a strait up horror movie (far better than cabin fever). Evil Dead being that perfect mixture of both and Army of Darkness as the indulgence of slapstick and shenaigans, with an established character we love.

Screw a F vs J movie. Ash belongs in the Evil Dead continuity. It's a whole different scenario, man! A universe without tired 80s-retread slashers killing ignorant-ass, disposable cannon-fodder. What I'm trying to say is, Ash doesn't need somebody else's turn-a-buck franchise to get exposure. What made the ED movies work was this beleagured jerk rising to the occasion, and laying the sweet smackdown on some genuinely loathsome and disturbing creatures. It's been a while, and I believe Raimi and Campbell grown as creative people. If they want to, they can make the ultimate horror epic.

    by chrth

How about we get Ash involved in the Scream films?!? What if Neve 'will act for food' Campbell gets possessed, and becomes the Scream killer, and Ash is sent to stop her? It's Gold! ... on a more serious note, I seriously doubt Spider-man II will get anywhere near Spider-man's grosses. Doc Ock and the Lizard are just too cereberal(sp?) of villains. I just hope they don't overdo the 'repentant villain' shtick...only Mr. Freeze (NOT the Governor's version) is truly worthy of that shtick.

  • Oct. 11, 2003, 11:01 a.m. CST

thank god there is a jeebus.....

    by jvrsn2

finally somebody understands my point of view that we need something new, not something that got Raimi, and Campbell's careers going. Come on guys let Ash and the series go quietly into the night. That is the problem with movies if you leave them at one then those characters have no flaw or weakness in your eyes but if you screw them into the ground with sequels that are rehashs of the same plot over-and-over you get sick of those characters and collectively gag on the whole series. Case in point Rocky, now granted I loved the first one, but the more they made the less the first one had an impact on me. Studio execs need to try something new instead of retreading the same movies over and over, because the first one made a bajillion dollars. For example I've always dreaded the fact that they are even planning Spider-man 3 because you know eventually it will become a cluster-mess. Just you wait. How long will it be before they start having Spider-man tv-show-like-plots. Seriously think about that and prove me wrong.

Think of the utter mayhem wreaked upon deadites and silver spheres by our two lunkheaded heroes! You know you want it.

All you twits who say "no more f**king sequels"

    by zabbadoo

Get it through your head. It's either sequels that keep the story going, or someone makes a ripoff to fill that niche. In the year 2070 when your grandchildren are taking their grandchildren to see Spider-Man 33 you will see the wisdom of this. And as for Evil Dead 4? FUCK YEAH!!! I'LL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL!!!!

Dear 'with regards TH' do you honestly think 45 is TOO old?

    by Regicidal_Maniac

Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt are 40, Michelle Pfeiffer is 45 and yes Bruce Campbell is also 45. But does that mean mandatory retirement for these actors? Some of the best roles are characters in their 40s. Bruce is in his stride now, and besides, how much more hilarious is a 45-year-old S-Mart employee.

    Ash doesn't matter, Bruce matters

    by Noonsa!

I just registered to post my useless comment, didn't read any comments before mine, so if it was already stated, boohoo. I don't think it's a problem that Ash isn't an icon. Bruce Campbell is the one that people will wonder "who the fudgecake is that." I love Bruce, and I'm sure everyone visiting this site loves him. He's not a well known name. But, if Raimi keeps making gold, it won't matter.

    The sad truth...

    by oat soda

Is that Bruce is TOO OLD to play Ash anymore. He'd have to log some serious hours in the gym to lose the chunk and would probably need some hair implants too.

Evil Dead 4 with Hulk Hogan as the bad guy????????

    by Lazy Eagle

That could be one of the greatest films of all time!!!!! Especially when Ash beats the leathery one to within an inch of his life and starts to sing "I'm a real American" using the stub where his hand used to be as a microphone!

Who cares if they don't own the title "Evil Dead"?

    by Blok Narpin

The 3rd one didn't have "Evil Dead" in the title. The fourth one doesn't need it either. Isn't the premise that Ash would be fighting mutants and Robots in a post-apocolyptic future? Call it "Ash vs. the Robots of Death" or something. As long as Bruce stars, and Sam directs I'll be there.

    by StoneMonkey

Hell, he's an admitted comic book geek, a Kevin Smith fan, a Tarantino fan(loved Kill Bill) and he loves slim chicks with big tits(the better the implants, the better your chance of getting on his show ladies!) He's has Raimi on his show already a couple a times. Do your homework.

    Evil Dead 4

    by DawnOfTheDead

I love Campbell as much as the next closeted homo fanboy, but I hate to say this, unless they create Ash almost as a new character, nobody except us closeted homo fanboys are going to even know anything about the Evil Dead movies. I had breakfast with Bruce at a private function, and believe it or not, he felt the same way. He also felt my ass, but that's another story for a crazy little

    Ash with a gut?

    by Electric Tsunami

Who said that Bruce Campbell would need to work out to play Ash again? This isn't Indiana Jones we are talking about. Ash is an "unlikely" hero; he's a victim of circumstance. If Ash now has a gut, so what. If Bruce doesn't want to play Ash anymore, maybe we can have a time/dimensional travelling "old" Elvis instead...

    by MisterGrimloch

trilogy is a nice word, but sometimes can invoke fear and disgust. for example, when someone says "The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be the best trilogy ever made." now, see how ridiculous that looks in print? everyone already knows that the word "trilogy" should apply to proper trilogies of merit, such as The Godfather, Star Wars (original AND prequels), The Terminator (until a fourth picture is made), Indiana Jones, and the Stranger with no name, along with Romero's "Dead" trilogy. when compared to any of these, the Lord of the Rings is more accurately described as a "shitology". here endeth the lesson.

    ash vs. freddy and jason

    by elviskilledjfk

This movie would last about 10 minutes considering that Ash would successfully destroy both freddy and jason within the five minutes? What would be done with the other five, you ask? Well we need that time to establish character.

    bubba hotep absolutely sucked

    by nickonline1

dude. i love bruce campbell. i love evil dead films. i love army of darkness. i even dig the early phantasm films. BUBBA HOTEP is SHIT. it suffers from being INCREDIBLY BORING, talky, filled with exposition, little plot, no threat, and Bruce's line are TERRIBLE in the sense they are so forgetable. no "gimme some sugar baby" stuff that will go on repeated by film geeks for eternity. this is a movie is all about concept (elvis and a black jfk fight a mummy in a rest home) that just fails on every one of those accounts. i know were all desperate for Campbell back in action, but come on man - for something half decent, not something half-assed.
