KILL BILL prequel, sequel, Austin Premiere Info & more!
Harry here... gosh, will there be a gigantic KILL BILL empire spawned by Quentin's latest? One can only pray! I'm going to be fascinated to watch the reviews come in on KILL BILL by the national critics via Rotten Tomatoes. Currently it is 8 ta 1 in Quentin's favor... with the lone voice of lunacy coming from our ol pal David Poland. Hell, it ain't like I don't know what it's like to be a lunatic... I've been there.
Hey Harry,
I picked up the new issue of "Newtype," this slick rag that focuses on Japanese anime and pop culture yet to hit our side of the Pacific. This month's issue features an interview with David Carradine talking about how he digs samurai sword fighting and such.
The juicy shit goes as follows:
"Bill wouldn't be in the sequels," Carradine says. "The original concept calls for two sequels, but they're going to be shot quite a bit apart. The children of some of the characters in this pictuire will become the stars of the subsequent movies, but there are also plans for a prequel that would be animated. It would be done with anime, as far as I know. That would take you back and give some of [The Bride's] backstory."
"As far as the prequel cartoon and, to a lesser extent, the sequels, these are visons that Tarantino has..."
How 'bout 'dem apples? I have yet to see KILL BILL, so this talk of kids has got question marks going over my head Metal Gear Solid style... but I did see Vivica Fox's daughter in the trailer...
Tyler Winfieldand then... there are still a few tickets available for the Austin Premiere of KILL BILL which the Alamo Drafthouse is throwing with the Austin Film Society this Wednesday... yes, as in TOMORROW!!! You could be partying down with Pei Mei!!! The Leader of the Crazy 88's himself... Gordon Liu. Last time I saw this GOD, I had to climb about a half billion Ming Dynasty steps to the Temple of Pei Mei on some mountain in China. Wednesday, he'll be in Austin, at the Alamo Drafthouse... I promise you... Going to the swanky cool new ALAMO DRAFTHOUS LAKECREEK is much easier than flying to China and climbing a half billion slippery Ming Dynasty steps! Though, personally, I'll miss the sound of a zillion cicadas... and the sight of the Miramax Lady being consumed by Chinese Bugs! See ya next Wednesday... I mean, this Wednesday!
GORDON LIU TO ATTEND AUSTIN PREMIERE OF TARANTINO’S KILL BILL VOL. I
Austin, TX--The Austin Film Society (AFS) announced today that Gordon Liu (PASSIONATE KILLING IN THE DREAM, THE 36TH CHAMBER COLLECTION) will be in attendance for the Austin Film Society’s benefit premiere of KILL BILL VOL. I at 7pm on Wednesday, October 8th at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek. Proceeds from the event will benefit the programs and services of the Austin Film Society.
KILL BILL, the fourth film from iconic director Quentin Tarantino, is an elaborate homage to the exploitation grindhouse genre. After being shot and left for dead on her wedding day by the group of professional killers that she tried to leave, The Bride (Uma Thurman) falls into a coma for five years. She awakes in a rage and promptly embarks on a prolonged revenge campaign in which, one by one, she kills off her old group leaving Bill (David Caradine), her boss, for last. KILL BILL also features Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Vivica A. Fox and Daryl Hannah.
According to AFS Executive Director Rebecca Campbell, “This promises to be all things Quentin; violent…compelling…Quentin.”
A Q&A with Gordon Liu will occur after the screening with a post party at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek to follow.
Tickets are $40 (which include admission to the screening, complimentary snacks and refreshments at the reception and a commemorative t-shirt) and are available through the Alamo Drafthouse’s website, Drafthouse.
KILL BILL VOL. I is rated R for strong bloody violence, language and some sexual content and will be released nationwide by Miramax Films on October 10th. KILL BILL VOL. II is scheduled for release in February 2004. For more information on the film, visit Kill-Bill.com.
For more information on the premiere, visit Austin Film Society or www.drafthouse.com.

To be relevant. WHOOO!
I was willing to let 'ole QT drain my coffers so I could see some mindless fun at first. Then I felt that splitting the film in two was a callous attempt to drag more cash out of me but was willing to do it if the film met my expectations.
Anime prequels and muppet baby sequels can fuck right off!
Why should this movie become a franchise? Are we not full to brimming over with 'franchises' and 'mythologies' already?
Have we learnt nothing, the more you drag this shit out (Matrix, Star Wars, Jackie Chan in general) the easier it is to see how empty all these things are.
That horse is dead, monsieur, and all your flagellation is in vain!

It's just Miramax wanting to charge double for the movie. They've released 3 hour movies before (JACKIE BROWN was 2 hours 31 minutes). And they're going to charge double for the DVD too--it's going to be on 2 separate DVDs.

Please, just release "Kill Bill Vol 1" and "Kill Bill Vol 2". Put both films out separately on DVD (which I know you're gonna do), then follow it a few months later with an "Ultimate Edition" DVD containing the whole movie spread out over two discs, "Once Upon a Time in America"/"Godfather II"-style. And leave it at that. Please. Pretty please. No anime prequel (shit, are we reaching the point in movie history when EVERY blockbuster must have its own anime prequel?). No graphic novels. No board game. No TV show. No Vincent Vega vs. O-Ren Ishii crossover movie. Just leave it be.

Poland is the worst, fucking, self-choad swallowing, hack internet critic on the web today. Who gives a fuck what this moron thinks? It only amazes me that anyone pays any credence to this schmuck's half-baked ramblings. I'll take Jeffery Wells' point of view over this loser any day of the week. If he hates "Kill Bill" it's enough of an endorsement for me. I'm there!

And Poland's main complaint is that the movie suffers from being chopped in half, is too slow paced, and just isn't edited tightly enough (funny, I remember the same complaints about another recent two-parter). Doesn't sound unreasonable to me. I guess I'll see when the VCD gets posted...

Kill Bill: The Next Generation, eh? And an animated prequel yet (and that would have be done in classic anime style.) Well, we've seen weirder. These follow-ups just might come off pretty well.

an animated prequel? sequels? this all just sounds like the ADD ramblings of taratino. The thing about it is, Its true, Harry almost only promotes Austin Events, whereas Moriarty chimes in with LA events, Ive seen Capone hype Chicago events, so I am thinking, MAYBE its because THATS WHERE THEY LIVE!!! If you know of another super cool event, and don't send it in, what good are you? I myself missed the boat, earlier this month when I didnt forward Harry the information about a screening of CITIZEN TOXIE with LLOYD KAUFMAN in attendance, in of all places, Des Moines, IA! Now whose fault is it that ? MINE! Harry depends on people sending him information, if he or Mori don't KNOW, they can't say anything. SHEESH!
-
Hey Harry, you say in your announcement that Gordon Liu plays Pei Mei, which is correct, but that Pei Mei is the leader of the Crazy 88. Not so. Mr. Barrel is the leader of the Crazy 88 and Pei Mei is the 150 year old Chinese Kung Fu Master living at the top of a mountain that Bill sends the Bride to so she can become a better killer. My question is are they playing both roles? It's hard to tell in both instances since one is wearing a Kato mask and the other is made up to look like a wizend old chinese Kung Fu Master. One other thing. Why, oh why, do we need a sequel let alone a prequel to this film. Don't get me wrong I am completely, totally 100% excited and ready to see this film, but from what I can see it's just a revenge movie. An over the top, in your face, tribute to grindhouse cinema revenge film, but only that. At the end of Volume 2 Bill will be dead story's over. We don't need Kill Bill 2: Kill the Bride.
-
Chicken George is right! and it's funny how QT says CGI is ruining movies, but I'm sure his peepshow payment plan will cause even more damage as we will eventually pay full price for 1/50th of a movie. Don't support this endless milking. It's way too early for KB franchise talk.
-
Rotten Tomatoes is a good site for getting the most reviews in one place--I actually find it is a good way to elminate the margin of error that occurs when something is open to a thumbs up or thumbs down on the basis of personal opinion. That said, be extremely wary of Harry's relentless, extremely biased endorsement of this movie. Even the 'fresh' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, if you click on them, prove to be less-than-stellar. The Hollywood Reporter review (the only established, non-dot.com horseshit review in the bunch) calls the film extremely watchable. Click to read the full review, however, and you'll see that the reviewer thinks this movie is seriously flawed and that it lacks any of the humor, heart or good dialogue that made Pulp Fiction such a great film. Rotten Tomatoes is a good source of movie feedback, but only insofar as they can only be counted on to give a 'good' or 'bad' review with nothing in between, which can lead to a misleading conclusion such as the one Harry throws out there (9 out of 10 reviewers think it's great!!)
It's all a moot point anyway--once the legit reviews start rolling in, Kill Bill is assured to be relegated to 'splat' status. -
I am going to join the AINTITCOOLNEWS BOYCOTT of Kill Bill. No fucking way are those goblins at Miramax going to get an extra $5 out of me by splitting their movie in two. I will be paying for a different movie, and sneaking in to KB - my voice will be heard.
Join the AICN BOYCOTT of Kill Bill. -
I'm looking forward to watching this movie but not when it screens in the theatres. From the looks of it this is a relatively formula revenge flick that throws in some pop-culture references so film geeks will adore it and that my friends does not warrant a sequel. It should be at most 2 1/2hr long flick but to split it into 2 movies is ridiculous. I hope for the first time someone comes out with a "CONDENSED" edition of a movie. I'll look out for that and definitely won't waste my hard earned money on 1/2 a movie no matter what the reviews say.
-
His film is genius, his film is decadent crap. Choose your side and hold your ground, it's fucking movie WAR! alright ;-)
For me I am just going to kick back and enjoy some movies. My number 1 movie for 2003, so far is "Finding Nemo," for all the reasons I love movies. Oh yes, I have seen "Matrix: Reloaded" (3 times, full price with friends. Hanging out was cool, the movie was not.) I have seen T3, Bad BoyII, Pirates, and several others (with NO freakin passes or special discounts.) Here is my plan for "Kill Bill Volume 1." I am going to catch the first show about 11am (Oct 10) at the closet cineplex to my office, then I am going to catch the 8pm show, to bask in the full house excitement, then I am going to catch it about 4 more times in the theater before "Kill Bill Volume 2" comes out. Since we are trotting out reviews, here is one that matters to me: KILL BILL -

MAGNOLIA isn't overlong?
-
Not that I recommend you steal. But one could make the point QT and Miramax are stealing by splitting the movie in two. So you could feel justified in buying one ticket, and downloading the other.... Maybe they should just do it that way, since its "too long" to be one movie. Put half in the theatre and let everyone who went download the other half. Naw then they couldn't pick your pockets... Artists deserve to be paid! Wah!
-
trix are for kids. People, this movie was not made to showcase extraordinary character development and a deep and dense plot, it is Quentin's fucking tribute to the films he grew up with and admired. This film will not be for everyone and is nowhere near as accessible as his other films and therefore it doesn't mean shit whether it's fresh or rotten on rotten tomatoes! Kill Bill is going to divide people but I for one can say that I have loved every dialogue scene and every action scene I have seen from it so far and will most likely love the whole damn thing when I see it Friday. And yeah Harry does need to swallow his pride and give us some fucking Revolutions coverage.
-
... that it's Carradine quoting QT, not direct from the horses's mouth. And even if it was, I would doubt this. QT is a master a la Orson Welles at speculating out loud about his projects. All the great directors get "attatched" to projects that never see the light of day - when is Scorsese going to make "Dino"? Or the Walter Winchell movie? Or the Gershwin movie? or (drool) his production of the Kubrick/Burgess Napoleon script? Hell, even Kubrick let one or two possible projects slip. It's a good way of keeping your name in the paper and your rivals guessing.

You know, the first "Matrix" was not exactly the most intelligent of flicks. What it was was an eye-popping visual fest (I know I must have read that somewhere. The dialogue and character developemnt in that flick was silly and sophomoric (sp?) at best, but damn, did that movie rock. I expect the same sort of thing from KB. Taking a grindhouse flick to task for weak character development is pure foolishness, and only reveals that the critic in question simply does not get the point of this kind of movie.

I have read the script, and I have some questions to the people who have seen the movie. First, how long is it? I have heard some say it is 95 minutes, others say 112 minutes. Also, where does the film end? The logical cliffhanger spot would be at "The Lonely Grave of Paula Shultz", but that seems much too far into the film (Chapter 7), so where does it end? Thanks.

in an industry that churns out sequel after unwanted and unwarranted sequel, your major complaint is about how they're splitting a movie that would be too long for regular movie going folk to sit through into 2 parts?.. and you blame the studio?.. I can't for the life of me understand WHY a multimillion dollar studio in a multi BILLION dollar industry would want to make MORE money phht Bunch of fucking snakes eh? what is the world coming to.. why would they want to build up hype, get free advertising and raise the likelyhood of the movie(s) doing good bank. Amd why would people who really want to see the film piss and moan like impotent jerks right before they cough up thier 16 bucks, then bend over and take the corporate cockshafting anyway. They're not hindering the studios cause by voicing whatever half baked idea they have to boycott a movie, purely based on the fact that they're cheap.. you can say that you don't think its right, you can say that you are trying to make a difference, but in the end, it will still have an 80+ million opening and your boycott would not make a lick of difference to anyone but you.. because you missed out.. And spare a thought for the Australian brothers who have to shell out 15 dollars (equivalent of 10 USD.. oh wait 10.25.. 10.50 and rising)..per session times 2... dont like the studios decision but still want to see it?.. you can either download the movie off the internet and spend an equivalent amount of funds (time + money) doing so.. or wait for DVD, QT said that they're going to release a parts 1&2 pack, but then you'll still be paying double the price.. or you can just be happy with not seeing it.. *BAMF*

Funny how everyone's bitching about Kill Bill being split in two
by hobbitastic
and bitch about The Matrix sequels doing basically the same thing... but no one is bitching about New Line putting out the theatrical versions of the Lord of the Rings movies followed by director's cuts two months later. Apparently THAT marketing scheme is honorable but Miramax and Tarantino are a bunch of soulless cuntrags. Because YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO GO SEE KILL BILL, right? Quit the bitching about Harry posting Kill Bill shit 10 times a day. What the fuck is wrong with obsessing over a movie you love? You've all done it before (*cough*lordoftheringsimentionasecondtime*cough*). I feel sorry for most of you that you've failed to find anything, or little, worthwhile in the way of films recently, that when something that might actually be great comes along, you create reasons to trash it sight unseen. If so many movies suck these days, then you should be more than happy to pay $8-10 TWICE to see Kill Bill. It's better than paying $8-10 ONCE to see something like that Radio movie with Cuba Gooding Jr. or some shit like that. And if you don't want to see Kill Bill, then I'm with MaulRat up there... don't see it and don't bother posting on the talkback. I know that most of you are probably ignored at home and this site is cheaper than therapy but damn, sometimes you need that face-to-face interaction. But whatever. I'm an asshole, Tarantino's an asshole but there's nothing wrong with 18 different discs of Lord of the Rings. That's just funny to me.
-
Sign me up for "being happy not seeing it". I wanted to like this movie, but they're not making it easy. First they split the movie in half, then they turn it into a franchise before the first one has even hit theatres. Then they're going to release multiple versions on DVD (still split in two parts, mind you). No thanks. It's a kung-fu movie with loud funky music playing in the background. I can survive quite nicely without seeing either Volume 1 or 2. I appreciate Harry's enthusiasm for the movie, but let's not pretend this is anything more than a mindless action flick. When every major new release is hailed as the Second Coming, it's hard to take the hype seriously after a while. Especially since none of these blockbusters has lived up to the hype. Realistic expectations, people. Try it sometime.

Hey, don't be mad at Harry. Be mad at your folks for not pooping you out in the best city in Texas. Yall from Texas, right? Damn. That's kinda sad.
