The Japanese poster for the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake is at hand!
Hey folks, Harry here with a reader that sent in the Japanese poster for the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. Having read the early script for this, and talked with some folks that have seen the shooting script, I don't think it would be necessarily wise to bet against this film. My original belief when I heard they were remaking TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, was that they'd desecrate it completely. Instead, they made a very intense Studio A Horror film. One that is never self-referential, one that doesn't ever really pull its punches... and that was oddly beautiful while grotesque. DAWN OF THE DEAD is an interesting case, it is... like TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, one of my all-time favorite horror films... but I have to admit, when I read the script to it... it felt like it was honoring the tone of the original, albeit creating something very different... which is kinda the point of an adaptation, be it from stage to screen or book to screen and now, even screen to screen.
Hi, AICN personnel
Here comes the first "Dawn of the Dead" remake poster, and Japan is in the lead.
The poster is very good looking, and this little girl's eyes resembles the eyes of the alien children in "Village of the Damned" remake...you know, when they start flashing their eyes and making things to happen...terrible things.
Of course this little girl doesn't look like your ordinary zombie...and the only children zombies I remember in the original "Dawn of the Dead" are the ones that attacks Peter Washington (the great Ken Foree) when they stop to put some gas in the helicopter.
We will see what they will come up to. I love horror originals (and this is one of them!) but, in those recent times, some (and I mean some!lol) remakes are occupying a deserve place in the horror filmmaking. Example? The Ring was a very good movie, I bet TCM will be an amazing film, Dark Water, and so on.
Well, i hope you guys put this new and pic on the site for others to enjoy.
See ya.
You can call me, Movieholic. =)

they are so ahead of the American horror genre that their posters are better then the movies we make =(

these eyes look really stupid. maybe if it was an alien-child, but zombies are supposed to be dead. The eyes should have a grotesque, DEAD look, not a creepy, shiny, glow-in-the-dark look.

As reported on Creature Corner right here:http://www.creature-corner.com/news3/oct01dodposter.php3 It's fan art.

Dawn of the Cosmetic Contact Lenses.

Go over and check out bloody-disgusting.com and they've proven this thing to be a fake from an over-creative fan. Besides would they really whore out the Romero name like that, seeing as how he had nothing to do with the remake?
-
...ever got nekid in a film? I've just seen some stills from TCM. She's so damn hot my pants are on fire!
-
I didn't like it at all. I'll give credit to the faker, though, because it was quite well designed - but ultimately, it sucks as a DOTD poster. Just not the right image I had in mind for a zombie-fest.

The poster is FAKE!!! Check things before you post them, Harry!!
by godoffireinhell
First of all, this is yesterdays news ... but that's beside the point I guess. You can find out all about how some fanboy FAKED this poster to earn some cash on ebay right here: http://www.creature-corner.com/news3/oct01dodposter.php3 Sorry, Harry, but you really should check those stories before posting them on your site. It's scoops like and that ridiculous Orson Wells Batman thing that hurt the credibility of your site. Take the Creature Corner as an example how you have to work in this business. You go to people involved with the production and try to verify what you have. If it turns out to be true, post it. But please, not like this! It is sad that you get outclassed by websites that wouldn't even exist if you hadn't founded AICN way back when. Quit slumming it!

and for all I know, he shot it while you posted.

give harry a break hes got himself a fucking awesome site here, and what if he makes a mistake from time to time? we all do. anyway, i know he loves dawn of the dead as much as i do so I was just as desparate to believe it was real. at the end of the day harry is a fan he isnt a studio exec he isnt a rep for any company hes just a man who loves movies. and he is giving us all the information we crave week in week out so give the man a break.
thank you harry, keep up the good work. -

Roger Avary "decided" not to do Dawn of the Dead?!! Fuck that no-talent hack -- Avary begged Strike to direct and rewrite and they told him to go fuck himself because of it.

I wonder if that image has more or less meaning to it in Japan where their baby girls don't have brown blonde hair and blue eyes. Is it more scary cause the person in the pick looks less like them, or is it less scary because it could not be their kid that got turned because it looks very different than them? hmmm either way horror movies still give me nightmares, last night I dreamt that an angel was sitting on the fire escape and we were all watching him, then he would disappear for a while and come back, as soon as I realized that the angel could actually touch stuff (like cigarettes) and that there may be bad angels I woke up kind of scared. My genious like imagination is more bad than good.
-
WITH THE GODDAMN CAPS LOCK IN YOUR COMPUTER??????
And this fake stupid poster is probably a hundred times better than the movie itself -
...I imagine everyone at the premiere slowly realizing that it was not a remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD, but VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED. Because the people behind this remake are just that stupid. "VILLAGE OF THE DAWN. Yeah, yeah. Whatever. It's a horror film. I'm hoping it'll be seen by Fox so I can get that PA gig and be close enough to touch Catherine Zeta-Jones."
-
I can't imagine a zombie looking like that without being aided by CGI while decomposing. Zombies NEED to decompose without computer effects. But still, its an image unfamiliar to DOTD fans, and I think that was a good idea, keeping fans of the old one on their toes... too bad it is indeed fake. Oh, and RESIDENT EVIL was donkeyass... my review here... http://www.naturalbornviewers.com/archive/r/residentevil/review.htm

Go to www.chud.com. We debunked this yesterday.

I have a strong desire that this remake be good. Dawn of the Dead is a totally cool movie that's I've loved since it came out, but you have to admit there are some parts that make you groan like the pie-fight scene. Yes it was comic relief, but stupid comic relief. It and a few other scenes bring the movie down. But I still love it. And I'd love to love this new remake if they can do it well. My mind remains open and eager to see it.
-
Flash Gordon. I love that movie, but it too makes me groan (throughout the movie actually).. if this were re-done with state of the art special effects and a big budget it could be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. It could easily be a blockbuster series of films if they gave it all the attention and respect as say, lord of the rings. That's the big remake I'd reallly like to see.
-
That bitch fucked the Alien films with his stupid ass "Artistic Vision". Fight Club? Go ahead and praise the film. The people who made it hold no stock in the belief system that is the basis for the story. They just got your cash and made you weep while they played a lament for your lost masculinity. And while were on the subject of major directors who have crossed over from the advert world to the film world, why not mention Sir Ridley Scott and his brother Tony. Get the head out of the ass, the horror of seventies film makers was some of the best ever, but that time is past. WE MUST MOVE ON. Universel pictures, I'm looking at you. Dicks. R.I.P. Seventies horror. Oh and Se7en ( for christs sake) was bullshit. I want that two hours of my life back.
-
AudehAbiTayi, you're dead wrong. You don't think bad horror films came out in the seventies and back further? Stuff worse than House of the Dead? Then you know very little about the history of horror cinema. 42nd street thrived on cut-rate horror in the 70's. Nobody was rioting at the theaters.
And why is it okay to remake a film if you take the story and change the setting, but not okay to keep the setting and change the story -- which is exactly what the new Dawn of the Dead is? Everyone has all these different reasons what's okay/not okay when doing a remake, but it all seems random to me. The primary people involved with making the new Dawn seem to have their hearts in the right place -- they want to make a good, hardcore horror film, in the style of the great seventies films (if you notice, most the actors are older -- an extreme rarity in today's horror films). That's good enough for me to give it a chance. -
"Fake"? "Debunked"? Yeah, right... The poster is real. You can see it on the T

Even if DOTD AND TCM are fantastic remakes there still that..REMAKES OF CLASSIC FILMS.Remakes of these films should NOT be done to begin with.
The ring on the other hand was different. Its not a legendary horror film and its exactly like the original.Except in english.
Wake up people!,dont you see what the studios are doing, there remaking films that when they were first released wouldnt go no where near them untill they became classics. Now there raping the film and making it safe for a new generation.WELL F*CK the studios and the new generation, tell them to go rent the classics and enjoy them on dvd.
-
First the poster is FAKE, but it looks COOL anyway. If you cry babies don't want to see remakes then guess what, DON'T SEE THE MOVIES! Be thankful the studios are remaking something as cool as a zombie movie as oppossed to something like HUDSON HAWK or ISHTAR. I don't give a fuck, I want to see a zombie movie in a theater and I'll take a REMAKE of a GOOD movie over wannabe artsy crap like 28 DAYS LATER (which wasn't even a really zombie movie or SCARY for that matter). PEACE!

Having the status of a gargantuan aficionado of the initial Romero trilogy, I am pensively apprehensive that this motion picture will be unsuccessful in realizing the astronomical excellence of the previous landmark.
I question whether any movie prepared in our day would incorporate an occurrence approximating the one where the gentleman has his appendage torn off, for instance.
Nevertheless, the Japanese are -
Sure, the DOTD remake isn't going to suck. Just like that TCM remake isn't going to suck. Gone will be the intolerable annoyances of pie fights and actual pulsing gore as created by a genius like Tom Savini. There will be bookoo CGI wizardry and hip, postmodern quips added, to be sure. Why watch the original DOTD or TCM when you can have a cleaner, more expensive, hyperedited and ultimately soulless version? Cheers!

"Japanese people just rock.
Comment: they are so ahead of the American horror genre that their posters are better then the movies we make =("
Go play with your pokeman cards and YOUNG school girl fetish stroke cartoons. Japanese stuff sucks. I try to look at it and it makes me ill. Godzilla, Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z. Wow, what stunning contributions to our world. Why do all the jap cartoons feature large round eyes? Western animators don't draw EVERYONE with slanted eyes.
'It's not cartoons, it's anime'. Is that japanese for 'Lame Animation'? Gimme a break.
And yes, this film will suck.

This is a letter from publicity at Universal pasted on a new DOTD fan site at http://www.wetnwildradio.com/DAWNoftheDEAD2004.html:
Hi Gary,
The Poster, I can guarantee that whatever it is, it is not official. There is no final key art for this film yet. I can get you an official poster for free when they come in -so save your money. I'll try to get a release date for you on the poster. You probably know that the teaser trailer is going up with Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Thanks,
Hilary

Oliver Hague, I'd forgive your ignorance in citing "official" DOTD Japanese sites if one of those sites didn't have the word "fan" in it.

I emailed Harrold with this information on the Japanese poster after doing some tracking down on the source of the ebay posters.. ended up finding the page where that poster image was posted in 20 different slices.. screengrabbed and photoshopped it and posted it on my site dedicated to sneaking around the set and taking pics of the Dawn 2004 production..that was a few days ago. Point is, this weenie informer just took his news from me.

obviously this turd burgler just ripped off me, and ripped off Miguelito.. just disgusting. -
My God, I was just hit with a wave of nausea over that comment, like when you watch a concentration camp documentary.
-
Sorry, Oliver Hague. James Gunn has posted this on www.jamesgunn.com:
"Yes, it's real. Essentially. It's a preliminary poster for Toho-Towa, the Japanese distributor of Dawn. It features the face of Vivian, a little girl at the beginning of the movie who feasts on the neck of Sarah Polley's husband. Eric Newman, the film's producer, told me the Japanese people are disturbed by the poster, by the idea of this innocent little girl being a flesh-eating zombie (Really? From the country who brought us BATTAL ROYALE?!) Honestly, to me, it looks just okay. Vivian doesn't look quite dead enough. In the actual movie, part of her face has been torn away ' -
AudehAbuTayi -- The Ring remake was not a direct remake. The ending, for instance, like much of the rest of the film, was much less ballsy than the original.
I don't think "replacing" the original has anything to do with doing a remake. They can work fine side by side.
And if appealing to a wider audience is your criteria for a remake, I do think that the new dawn of the dead will appeal to a much larger audience. Its budget is over 30 million (there have been other numbers said on the net, which are not true any longer). This will make a big difference. -
Anime my ass...they're freaking cartoons. It might be good as long as Jack 'I don't like pussy' Black is not in this piece of shit.

Nice Matrix code just dripping from her forhead

Do you honestly think we'll get a poster even half as cool for the Western release?

Or the new Planet of the Apes. Technically superior, but lacking in story and characterization. The original POTA is still light years better than Burton's eye candy.
-
Kinda looks like Dakota Fanning. And what's with the eyes? I hope they don't have the zombies sporting eyes like that. Their eyes should look dull,
"lifeless eyes--like a doll's eyes." Like the shark in Jaws. -
yes, this poster is real! its a japanese distribution company's promo poster for the film. In Japan, Universal has no control over the poster art, hence the denial that they have anything to do with it. Because they don't. Check out the real info from James Gunn himself:

"Dawn Of The Dead" would be nothing without the magic of Ken Foree.
God bless you, Ken. You bug eyed weirdo. -

Like John Houston says in Chinatown, even whores and politicians become respected with old old age. I think the passing of time is sweetening people's memories of Dawn of the Dead. Everybody's talking about it like it's this classic, this sacred cow that you just can't remake. Night of the Living Dead is a classic. DOTD is just like any of the dozens of poorly acted zombie schlockfests from the seventies. It's a kind of fun goof on consumerism but really, Hell's Angels splatting zombies in their dead faces with pies? Give me a fucking break. So far what Harry has posted about the script sounds really cool and Sarah Polley is the Mt. Rushmore of cool so give it a chance. Leatherface is the sexiest tomboy beanpole on the planet.
-
As an aside, a UK version of this poster can now be seen plugging the film on the sides of bus shelters across Britain.
And would it not have been scarier if she actually looked liked this in the film? For some reason, cherub-faced flesh eaters are scarier than ones with their top lips gnawed off...
