First Day Of CATWOMAN Shooting! Photos Online!!

Published at:  Sep 29, 2003 8:32:56 AM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

These guys had a great idea for a website, focused solely on what’s going on in their home town of Vancouver, where so many things are filmed today. They’re a great source of first peeks at stuff, so you should bookmark them, precisely because of days like today:

CatwomanDay #1

HNR was present today at Hastings and Hornby in Downtown Vancouver for the start of principle photography on DC's 1st comic book feature since 1997's "Batman & Robin". It was an exciting time with flocks of tourists and paparazzi all over the place. We would like to commend WB's production personnel for their courtesy in dealing fairly with the crowd.

Now here come the pictures. The scene being shot today involved Patience Price(Halle Berry) walking down the street carrying a box containing the Egyptian Mao cat. We were able to snap a few shots of Halle Berry conversing with French Director Pitof, along with some shots of the general area, Catwoman's motorcycle and what could be Gotham City license plates (depending on if the film is set there or not).

Also we received the official synopsis submitted to the city by the production office:

"Catwoman" is a feature film based on characters created by DC Comics. In this new adventure Patience Price, a mild mannered graphic artist, is murdered in order to keep her silent about an accidental discovery she made. An ancient myth is played out when an Egyptian Mao cat, indebted to Patience for her saving its own life, breathes life back into the young woman. Patience is reborn with an independent attitude, carefree behavior and the heightened senses of a cat. Now she must investigate the circumstances behind her murder and learn to accept both parts of herself.

Every time I hear that synopsis, or any summary of this film, I am struck by how very, very little I want to see this film. Holy cow.

"Moriarty" out.

Hey, just because Warner has screwed up every other superhero movie they've tried to make doesn't mean this one will necessarily be bad. After all, all they've done so far is change the name, origin, personality and mission of the character. ...aw crap.

    by mel's rockpile

Cripes, the movie's barely started production, and already I'm booing at the screen. This sounds gag-inducing. Who comes up with these ridiculous and boring script ideas? I can't believe films like this ever get greenlit. What's so hard about keeping a character true to it's original origins? Were they not good enough? Millions of dollars in comic book sales aren't evidence enough that people have been interested in the Catwoman represented on DC's pages for the past few decades? I'm getting so sick and tired of this "make a buck, don't give a fuck" attitude towards screenplay writing. Moriarty sums it up perfectly: I am struck by how very, very little I want to see this film.

    by lost skeleton

...I think WB never intended this to be aimed at comic geeks. I think this "re-imagining" is for the female crowd who are not in to the comics. Basically, they are making an action movie for girls. On that note, it will fail because women ultimately hate action movies, especially ones based on comic books.

Bad move WB...however the one good move WB is making is introducing the most groundbreaking finale to one of the greatest movie triolgies of all time...Revolutions...fucking you hard on November 5th!

..on the other, at least it's NOT Selina Kyle they're fucking up. And DC have been kowtowing to the movies longer than thirty years; in the forties they changed Alfred from a fat, clean shaven guy to the Alfred we know b/c the actor playing him in the movie serial looked liike that.
Adapting stuff for the sake of shit like Smallville and Birds of Prey [ooh, contrived plot to get Black Canary younger!] is a fucking cuntbubble though. The spineless dicks.

I seriously doubt if racial issues have anything to do with the complaints of this film. After all, there wasn't much of an uproar over the fact that the Kingpin was portrayed as a black man in "Daredevil". There were so many other things to complain about, people quickly forgot their gripe with that bit of casting.

    by brian_de_man

Halle Berry is a waste of space! She never deserved that Oscar, She did nothing in Moster's Ball except show her fake ass tits and curves. She cannot act worth shit so she uses her body to influence ratings by showing it off. I hate to tell you this..but she is not that good looking, I can go to a Porn site and see 10 better looking girls in the first 5 minutes. Michelle Phiffer (spelling?) is a better actress for Catwoman and should be the only one playing this part. She atleast had class and did not have to show her body to be sexy. Racism has nothing to do with it.. Putting Halle Berry, a horrible actress as Catwoman, is just as bad as putting Brendan Fraser as Superman. He might have been good in the Mummy, but will suck as the man of steel. That's not racism, thats just fact.

Pud!, you are what is so very wrong with race relations. It is that paranoia that minorities have when something doesn't go their way or they get criticized and they find it extremely easy to yell 'racism'. Is it so hard to believe that maybe people look past skin color when they don't like someone? Maybe they have a legitimate, non-racial beef? Of course not! Then you couldn't get up on your high horse and trot around, spewing out blames and yelling of injustices on outlets such as internet news sites. It's funny. Halle Berry is very successful. She's been in many films, has been paid very well, is extremely popular, and even managed to win an Oscar. This is quite an achievement and a good yardstick on race relations. Yet there are still people out there who have nothing to fight for or about and go out of their way to find something that might resemble injustice or mistreatment. Quite frankly, I am sick to death of it. I am sick of people like yourself, Pud!, that wake up in the morning just wanting to start that fight over nothing.

While I wouldn't kick Halle Berry out of bed, she's no jaw - dropper. And although I wouldn't say she messed up Storm or her character in the last Bond flick, exactly, I'd still say that her performances really didn't stick in my mind afterwards. These views have nothing to do with race, I couldn't give a shit. Couple these things with the absolute bollocks of a story it seems they've come up with, and I'm going to stay well clear of this one.

    PUD's take on Halle

    by dmented

PUD! You're on the money about Halle ... she's God's gift to this world, and ain't no silicone on her. And I'm not sure the right to be sexually exploited is anything to wish for, but Halle's got as much right to it as any white chick!

But the movie's still gonna suck. The formula for a female superhero movie/series hasn't been perfected, and most attempts have been dogshit. Lines like Birds of Prey's "I am the weapon" delivered with bubblegum-snappin' emptyheadedness don't help. The Alias TV show usually manages to avoid being totally ridiculous, but it's still not quite there.

BTW all, Catwoman coming back from the dead is not a new idea ... remember Pfeiffer's Catwoman getting pussy-licked back to life in that alley?

    by harmoniumsaver

A bunch of seven year olds. Just like when I was seven, this script would have been it would have been lame. But see, the heads of the studio (seven year olds I mind you) are a little jaded by spending so much time BEHIND the camera instead of in the audience, and their footing is a little loose. Maybe by the time they hit puberty things will fall into place and make sense. And for someone who can't even get Ororo Munroe's character, Halle Berry deserves a better agent. I am very tired of movies that fall flat on their faces before even trying to walk. What a crappy movie this will be.

But, man, I'd take Pam Grier right now, 50-plus, over Halle on a stack of Oscars. In fact, if they wanted to cast a sister as Catwoman, they should have done it when Pam was in her prime. She was built exactly like the character Jim Balent drew with kickballs for bosoms.

I can't stand Berry. From her 'I'm *reduced* to comic book movies' remark which quickly turned into "I LOVE my strong female black superhero role!" as soon as X-Men was a hit, to her infamous running a red light, severely crashing someone's car and just-taking-of-cuz-I'm-a-CELEBRITY-stunt, to her amazingly arrogant 'I'm the black female jesus of actresses' oscar speech. As for her acting, I've seen worse, but it's never been above mediocre, sorry. That SHE got that first oscar for a black female lead and not someone like Angela Basset is a joke. But then Oscars are pretty much devaluated to nothing by now anyway. As for this Catwoman movie, it's ridiculous. YES you have to cater to a bigger audience than the comic book readers, but you still need to KEEP them since they're the corner stone of your opening weekend! The only saving grace I can think of is the idea of Berry in a tight shiny catsuit. Yeah I do think she's hot and I do like hot women in tight shiny catsuits. Sue me. It's the only thing that makes me even click on links like these. Won't make me go to the theater though. For the record, I wasn't all that impressed with Pfeiffer's turn in Bats II either. I know that's almost sacrilegeous to say here but some of her in-costume dialogue ("Namely u-us!") is delivered every bit as campy as anything I've seen on the old Adam West show or done by Uma in the horrible Bats IV. Her acting OUT of costume I thought was pretty good and powerful. But really, falling out of a window, almost breaking some bones and having cats lick your face instantly turns you into a self assured vamp with high level acrobatic skills and the fighting prowess of a ninja??? That 'origin' was every bit as stupid as THIS one. Still Burton's films will probably be a notch or two above this upcoming Catwoman flick. Just a hunch of course. And 'Patience Price'??? Dear god and they make fun of comics! That's a porn star's name for frag's sake!!

You have to wonder about how these decisions get made. As a pitch, this movie sounds good: "Halle Berry wears skin tight leather/PVC and spends the movie doing kung fu and saying 'meaow' in a sexy way." All the execs at the table rub their chins and say "Hmm, sounds good. Joey the retard, do you want some input on this?" Joey the retard looks up from the corner of the room where he has been quietly banging his head on the wall and muttering to himself. "Change it all!" he yells, spattering the assembled WB execs with spittle. "Change it all! Where's my jelly? You're not my dad!" "Yes!" cries Exec#1 "Change it all! Excellent! I know, let's give it the same name as an established character, popular with thousands of people, but actually make it about someone completely different!" "Genius" ejaculates Exec#2 "That way, we can immediately alienate the cornerstone demographic whilst the retention of the comic character's name as the title will ensure that people who wouldn't normally go and see a comic book movie will still stay away." "It's a sure fire hit! Bravo everyone! More cocaine all round!" Everyone turns to Joey the retard, who has now pissed himself and his sniffing bemusedly at the wet patch on the carpet. "Well done, Joey!"

    by moviefreak05

Its because Marvel is smart enough to hire a screenwriter and have them write a good story of the character(s) and have the original origin roots. Its the reason why X-Men has such a huge success at the box office. What's wrong with continuing the story of Selina Kyle?? This is why WB can never make a decent super hero film, they screw it up all the time. WAKE UP WB! STAY WITH THE ORIGINAL STORY! Unforantely its too late to do anything about Catwoman since everything is moving forward as it is. I'm not saying this won't be a bad film it's just why not stick with the original story, the way it was meant to be told?

We think this is a shitty idea for a movie and we're racist? *coughBULLSHITcough* Let's all remember that one of the best actresses to protray Catwoman was Eartha Kitt. Sure, the 60s Batman series was cheesy as fuck... but from the looks of it, it's still gonna be better than this piece of shit movie. Can't the estate of Bob Kane sue WB's asses off for fucking up his creation? Probably not, but it'd be nice to think they could. Personally, I got no beef with Halle Barry as an actress. The fact she's playing Catwoman doesn't bother me a bit. My issue is the fact they had to fuck up the story harcore. Whatever happened to Selina Kyle, cat burgler? You could do a pretty hiest flick with that material if you wanted to.

    Why?

    by kingofthefools

Why is this movie even called Catwoman? Couldn't they call it like Cat Burgler or something like that? Is WB trying to make people think that this is OUR Catwoman? If it's not Selina it's not Catwoman. Then I saw her costume over at SuperHeroHype. To paraphrase the imortal Bart Simpsons...I didn't think it was possible for something to both suck and blow at the same time, but I was prooven wrong. It was hard to laugh and cry at the same time. That helmet/mask she's wearing looks so stupid. Also, the whole Halle/Bratt relationship sounds an aweful lot like the relationship the Huntress had with that detective in the BOP TV series. Gee, now WB have to rip off their own television shows to get subplots for their movies. This isn't Catowman, I so won't be seeing this movie, and WB should be VERY ashamed of themselves. Sad, so very sad. Thank you for your time.

That costume is horrible! Someone call Joan Rivers, we have a fashion emergency!

This movie was soley designed for the horny teens and has pisses on fans of the character.

    by mwhelan67

That is, hands down, the WORST superhero outfit I've ever seen! It looks like cheap, $2 hooker lingerie! That can't be for real, even the WB can't be that stupid!

Let me get this straight...Halle is proud of being black?

    by tracheotomy man

That must be why the first thing she did when she won her Academy Award was thank all of the important white people in her life, eh?

If I gave a crap about Catwoman.....

    by lewmoxon

.......this would make me sick. I love DC (and the Bat-mythos in particular), but it's painfully clear that DC just doesn't get it.
