JIM 'DRAGON' KELLY in Austin for a double feature of ENTER THE DRAGON & BLACK BELT JONES!

Published at:  Sep 25, 2003 4:58:36 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... To me, the only way that KILL BILL could be cooler than it apparently already is, is if JIM KELLY were in it. Jim Kelly is... for any lover of American Seventies Martial Arts and Blaxploitation filmmaking... He's the mutherfucking BOMB of cool.

"BULLSHIT, MR HAN-MAN!"

Once upon a time, there was no greater film geek cult film than ENTER THE DRAGON. There is something magical about ENTER THE DRAGON, something that you can never really touch. I'm not sure if it's the Lalo Schifrin score... The widescreen asskicking cinematography... Bruce Lee's astonishing fight with the guards... OR - Just how fucking cool JIM KELLY is. Jim, for me, has always been the cherry on top of the cinematic sundae that is ENTER THE DRAGON...

"MAAAN, YOU COME RIGHT OUT OF A COMIC BOOK!"

True, true, actually I come right out of a comic book shop, the one my Dad owned in the 70's. Beginning at the age of 3 I sold stills of JIM KELLY at conventions, right alongside Bruce Lee, Kirk, Spock, LOGAN, HAL, The Demon from CURSE OF THE DEMON, and on and on and on. I collected Martial Arts movie posters and 16mm trailers - which I still own today. You watch Jim Kelly kick the shit out of bad guys in film with his distinctive howl as his fist meets their tonsils and I dare ya not to go... "COOOOOOL".

"I'LL BE TOO BUSY LOOKING GOOD!"

Jim Kelly is a figure of legend, alongside John Saxon and Bruce Lee - he figured prominently into one of the coolest flat out amazing films of all time. His chiseled features and just utter badassness just leap from the screen, and the idea that he'll be there... at the Alamo Drafthouse Lakecreek along with ENTER THE DRAGON is unreal! You see... for almost 20 years Jim Kelly disappeared... Many assumed he was off having adventures... whupping the ass of bad guys everywhere... Kicking "The Man's Ass" wherever it was showing up to keep the righteous down. JIM KELLY... He's gonna be here in Austin this Sunday and I'm just jazzed as can be!

"BATMAN, MUTHERFUCKA!"

Now, I don't want to seem like the only worthwhile film he did was ENTER THE DRAGON.... God no. I've got videos in my collection of BLACK SAMURAI, BLACK BELT JONES, THREE THE HARD WAY, GOLDEN NEEDLES and TAKE A HARD RIDE! And I enjoy them all.

This Sunday... JIM KELLY - Black Belt Jones himself hits Austin and only a fool won't be there... You a fool?

CLICK HERE TO GET YOUR TICKETS FOR JIM KELLY - ENTER THE DRAGON and/or BLACK BELT JONES, with Jim Kelly being there in person to kick your ass!!!

Dude, Jim Kelly was so like a comic book character, ironically

    by terry_1978

Even though I was born in '78, my older family members would go on and on about Kelly and how cool the man was in these flicks. He had that "black superhero" vibe that so many of my uncles and father still go on about to this day. True enough there we had Shaft and Superfly and all, but did any of these dudes know kung-fu and sport such a tight ass fro? I don't THINK so!

My memory of Kelly is that he couldn't act to save his life. He was wooden. Am I wrong? Where was he when they were shooting I'M GONNA GET YA, SUCKER? which by the way was on TV today!

    by psychonaut

Criticising martial arts stars for their acting ability is slightly redundant, I would suggest. In the case of Jim Kelly, it is also unfair, as his simple coolness somehow supercedes his poor thesp-ing skills. "If I've missed anyone out, I'm sorry. It's been a big day. I'm a little tired."

    THREE THE HARD WAY

    by harryknuckles2

Jim Kelly is the greatest! He is the coolest thing about Enter the Dragon. Black Belt Jones is the cooler then cool! Hot Potato is dynamite! But THREE THE HARD WAY is his best - and probably the greatest Blaxploitation film of them all!

Because he's going to be here, in Houston, tomorrow night. At our Alamo Drafthouse(which is admittedly not as good yet)before he comes to yours. It's so nice to get over on your elitist city for a change.

    you know...

    by simpsonsquoteman

my video collection is so cool man. when i was like 2 years old i lived with fred olen ray and he gave me all the original prints from his movies. then I worked at the laserdisc factory when they were first invented and i got the first ever printing of every laserdisc ever made there. and at the time, sonny chiba lived across the road, and we'd stay up all night talking about how cool we were. then later, i was working as the chief tester in a fireworks factory, which i waaaay cooler than anything you ever did, and who should work there, but the special effects guys that did godzilla vs. mothra. man i actually got mothra's original wing given to me, which i still have at my house, which is the best. i told jess 'jesus' franco to come and look (he was my best pal at the time) then i spent a lot of time learning to skateboard with tony hawk before it was cool, then I started writing computer games for this company called "id software" but i left cause they got so full of themselves, plus they stole my 3-d shooter game idea. ps did i say I rule?

Dammit Harry, why does Austin have to be so far from SoCal. Harry, if you don't post pictures of this event, I will have to beat you like Belt beats JellyBelly. Still the greatest flick ever with the coolest ultimate superfly brotha on the planet in the starring role. BATMAN MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Belt Has Spoken!

    Kelly is SO cool

    by haildahypnotoad

But, I had the opportunity to watch "Black Samurai" on MAx Action last week or so. I taped it so I could at least have this one in my collection. Boy, I gotta tell ya, its bad, not BAD as in cool but bad as in, well, bad. Avoid this one if you can. Still trying to get my hands on Black Belt Jones. One other thing, Jim Kelly has the COOLEST RUN in movies. The only cooler run is Billy Dee Williams running through Cloud City in "The Empire Strikes Back". I know its trivial but then again, what isn't?

The cool thing about Jim Kelly...

    by joey stylez

...is that, like Bruce Lee, he was a legit martial artist. Piss him off and he could legit kick your ass. I love ENTER THE DRAGON (got it on DVD)and I have to check out his other films. He would have fit in perfect in KILL BILL. He may not be a great actor but you could see a natural charisma in DRAGON. Watch him during the scene when John Saxon is getting beat up so they can win a bet. I also love it when he kicks the cop's asses. He not only took them out, HE DROVE OFF IN THEIR COP CAR! That's a cool muthafucka, right there. Harry, you gotta post pics of this event and if you get a chance, interview Mr. Kelly for us.

    Jim "da man" Kelly

    by chefman

Jim "da man" Kelly graced us with his first appearance in twenty years
at the Houston Alamo Drafthouse Saturday night. Man, he was something
straight out of a comic book(ahem). It was a double feature of Enter the
Dragon and Black Belt Jones; supposedly marking the thirtieth anniversary of
    Enter the Dragon.
I had originally bought the tickets to see Enter the Dragon on the Big
screen, and was shocked to see Williams (Jim) there. He was signing
autographs before the movie, which gave the average Joe Schmoe a chance to
talk to the legend (he signed a pair of panties for my wife). The man exudes
    coolness.
Before the show he did a quick Q&A session, answering questions about
Bruce, martial arts, his age (avoided this answer), ect. Some unanswered
    questions shouted out:
Who got more women, you or John Saxon?
    Who cut your hair?
The first movie played, big cheers when Jim "Williams" appeared. It was
great to see this play on the big screen. During the intermission between
movies a group of martial artists from some local school gave demostrations
    in the lobby.
I had to leave before the next movie, but I count this as one night that
    I'll not soon forget.
