They Gave Luis Guzman A TV Series on Fox!! All Bow Down!!

Published at:  Sep 18, 2003 11:07:50 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

I always thought it would be fun to cast Luis Guzman as a vampire in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Angel,” because he’d look pretty much the same in human- and vamp-face.

Behold everyone’s favorite Puerto Rican thespian not named Jennifer as he squanders the goodwill garnered in “The Adventures of Pluto Nash,” “Anger Management” and “Dumb and Dumberer” -- in the service of a tawdry Fox sitcom!

TV Guide says:

As tasteless as week-old crullers, Luis is a melting pot of cring-inducing ethnic ciches. Guzman, a fine character actor, is not a natural comedian. He launches every lame joke as if it were a weapon. This isn’t funny, it’s frightening.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

Nothing in the premiere … indicates that {Guzman’s] ready yet to shoulder star billing. To be fair, Guzman might be fine if given the opportunity to play a more textured character instead of the perpetually angry proprietor of a Spanish Harlem doughnut shop.

Variety says:

Advocacy groups pushing for more Latinos on TV may hang their heads after watching "Luis." Fox's laffer indeed puts a Puerto Riqueno front and center, but the show pastes together every possible cliche at the expense of sophistication and, more seriously, the advancement of minorities on series television. Weak punchlines come fast and furious, and so do plenty of off-color jokes that take this half-hour in the wrong direction.

Entertainment Weekly gives it a C- and says:

You loved him in ''Traffic.'' You feared him in ''Oz.'' Now you'll feel mildly annoyed by him in his own sitcom. … Like ''Whoopi,'' ''Luis'' traffics in the season's most odious cliche: a white character who acts ''black'' (blame it on ''Bringing Down the House'').

USA Today gives it one star (out of four) and says:

… horrific … Loud, loathsome 'Luis' misfires … Guzman seems to think the key to sitcom stardom is to shoot out every line and hammer every gesture. Your reaction isn't to laugh, it's to duck.

8:30 p.m. Friday. Fox.

Met him once at Logan Airport. He was a nice guy and I usually love him in any movie he's in. This, however....

    get back to movies

    by mag7man

Guzman is one of the best character actors out there. Any time he's in a movie, that film is that much better. Hoping this show tanks big time so he can do what he does best

Is this the guy that was in Count of Monte Cristo?

    by crush181

He was cool. Seemed kind of out of place though in that movie. I guess if The Count Of Monte Cristo needed a gun or some crack he would have made sense.

Why are the links to the main web page instead of directly to the reviews? And it's kind of pointless to link to Variety or Entertainment Weekly's sites too, because they both require subscription. Oh yeah, Guzman rules.

    Luis Guzman is white?

    by fred

  • But I won't put down the actor. He's pretty damned good in the few roles I've seen him play. Sadly, this probably won't help his career. I predict this show will be axed before the season finishes, same as Whoopi. They're like the reverse of All in the Family and many Americans just won't stand for that and go off bitching and boycotting,; the rest will just not bother.

    by radio1_mike

Leave Luis alone, man. He's great a character actor that I first saw in NYPD in the 1st season (the only season I ever watched). Why should not he grab the bucks while it's offered? Gee, is George Lopez soooo much better? It'll probably tank, but he get some greens, some more exposure. I bet the the people ragging on this show- are secret Ned&Stacey fans.

    by miltonwaddams

"this guy is a fantastic dramatic actor, let's see how he'll handle a lame ass sitcom". about as strange as the whole "cast comedians in action movies" fad that's been going on since the mid 80's.

  • Luis the show had just poor timing on all the jokes. The white guy layabout painter has a horrible voice. Luis also squels everything. The jokes weren't really funny. And the white guy acting black that Entertainment cited is not that sterotype, the white guy is more like a creepier screech character. Someone with facial ticks and a high voice. He's not acting black though.

That was some funny shit. I am Mexican-American and some people said that I have my shit together in theater and I still can't get a fucking agent. I guess I have to look like a San Quentin prison bitch (no disrespect to Danny Trejo) to be given a chance.

  • Guzman is one of the most interesting looking actors around. His appearance fits the sour, Becker-like viewpoint. A lot of negative, I'm-so-put-upon posturing, but, you get a peak that there can be a PAINFULLY sweet guy on the inside. Guzman can stand still with his eyes closed and instantly look stronger and more believeable than a sitcom character is supposed to be. Why do a sitcom? It may be the easiest type TV show, for an actor, around right now. Hour long dramas are a time consuming ball breaker for the actors.
