KILL BILL VOL 1, ALIEN Director's Cut & HOUSE OF THE DEAD trailers up at APPLE

Published at:  Sep 18, 2003 12:46:36 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Got this email regarding the KILL BILL VOL. 1 trailer hitting online, still waiting for the KILL BILL Cult Trailer to hit online off the Soundtrack, alas... it ain't here yet! Argh! Interesting thing to note on this trailer is they've covered the blood on her outfit up, taking out the red to favor black, cuz MPAA won't let a bloody trailer play "for all audiences" argh... ANYWAYS - while I'm at it, I should also post the links to The ALIEN Director's Cut trailer and the HOUSE OF THE DEAD trailer. The ALIEN Director's Cut is intriguing... finally seeing that stuff in there and on the big screen is cool... though admittedly, I'm not a big fan of Ridley Scott's updates to his films traditionally. I am hoping to really love this, but ALIEN is just about as perfect a film as there is. While on the exact other end of the spectrum, there's a film like HOUSE OF THE DEAD, which Quint called one of the worst 5 films he's ever seen... Here's San Solo with the KILL BILL VOL 1 Link....

Hey Harry!

I'm a HUGE fan of yours. Just wanted to let you know
(though you probly already do) that the Kill Bill Vol.
1 trailer is up on the quicktime site. hope i'm
helping!

    Director's Cut confusion

    by boneyard

Is this a theatrical release of the movie with the extra features we've already seen on the DVD?

While it would be cool to see the film in the theatre (I missed it the first time around) those extra scenes don't really add anything to the movie... not like Aliens extra scenes do...

    Alien - New scenes

    by ringlord

I've heard that this new release has put back several of the deleted scences that we have already seen featured in the original DVD release. This new cut will be part of the Alien Quadrilogy release. I've also heard that both Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, the weakest installments of the series, will also be given the directors cut treatment, and that we get to see the original theatrical version of Aliens.

    Alien director's cut

    by blue_demon

Hmm. I remember years ago I bought a trade paperback called "The Book of Alien" all about the making of the movie. I know there was a scene that was cut out that showed Ripley running to the lifeboat/shuttle and running into a room that had Dallas and Brett cocooned. ( it showed a dark fuzzy pic of one of them ) The cocoons were slowly transforming BACK INTO the original eggs that Kane found on the ship. That was how they reproduced, the missing link in the chain. If this scene is put back in, it renders null and void James Cameron's concept of the queen. ( a cool concept, making the aliens a cross between the digger wasp and an ant colony ) Cameron even addressed the issue when a reader pointed out that the scene was cut out, ( for pacing reasons according to Scott ). Cameron said that as long as the scene is not in the movie, the life cycle of the aliens is according to his take in "Aliens," which makes sense. But now? It'll be interesting.

    by grandocariissian

Alien - why does every trailer for a horror movie have to end with some quiet scene that goes on for 5 seconds, and then suddenly there's some kind of "jump" moment? it's so obvious by this point it's completely ineffective anymore. still, now i'll have to choose between this and TSM on halloween.

Kill Bill - great trailer, even though the "black" blood makes Uma look like she spends the whole move working on dirt bikes or something. still won't pay twice to see a single movie though.

House of the Dead - yeah, this does look about as bad as everyone says it is. you can practically hear the voice-over guy groaning at the forced attempt to work the movie title into the voice-over.

    Ridley Scott

    by gristle

Harry, when you say you're not a fan of Ridley Scott's updates, does that include the director's cut re-release of "Blade Runner"? Or are you talking about the rumoured re-re-release of the film that clears up that whole "Is Deckard a replicant?" question, which I can say sounds like the worst idea since Lucas cleared up the fact that Han Solo was justified in killing Greedo, because, after all, he was a piss-poor bounty hunter who couldn't kill a man at point-blank range.

    Alien - More Money Edition

    by lumin kadare

Like Boneyard, I saw the extras on the DVD release. The reasons Scott gave for cutting them out were all aesthetic ones and not studio interference. The original cut was his cut. There is a scene where we see the Alien walk bizarrely across the floor which he cut out because it gave away the creature's form too openly, there's a scene where Ripley finds the alien's nest, wherein lie the earlier victims, slowly turning into eggs. He said he cut this out for pacing reasons. If this is back in it will clash with the queen alien egg-maker idea. However, one great thing about the scene is Tom Skerrit's hair-raising moans. Also, there are extended conversations and such, all which Scott said he cut out for pacing. Not one cut was demanded by higher-ups. Director's Cut, my arse. They're just doing all this now for money (good for them; no problems with that). This is NOT Scott finally showing us the version he always wanted to.

This is a new director's cut. Scott is revisiting his past and making the films the way he wants them, now. Yes, this is a money making release, but so are all movies you non-common sense bastard. They don't spend money on movies and release them for the art of it. No one does, not even the artist. It's all about money, which is the way it should be.

There's no point to an Alien Dir. Cut

    by onefettinthehand

I will like seeing the film on the big screen again, but I wish they were leaving the deleted scenes out because they are pretty pointless. The only cool one is the egg scene and that screws up the continuity of the series. There actually was another one that was kind of cool and that was of the alien walking kind of crab=like across the floor. Ridley cut it because he felt it revealed the human form too much. All I can say is that they'd better have seamless branching on the DVD because I prefer the original version. As for Kill Bill Vol. 1.....don't get me started on that fucking bullshit.

Orange Brat - a name to match an intellect

    by lumin kadare

Mr. Brat. I have no qualms with someone making money; I said as much in the text. Please reread. Director's Cut has come to mean a version of a film preferred by a director - quite often directors are forced to shorten a film's running time for screen-time/cinema showings reasons. Less time means more screenings per day and brings the people who often stay away from long films. Since Ridley Scott actually SAID the cuts he made were for pacing reasons and reasons of tone (the human-into-egg) scene was cut because he SAID it disrupted the tone the film had taken on. He SAID conversations were cut because the material was unnecessary deadweight which slowed the film down. And he SAID a weird little scene where the alien crab-walks towards one of the crew showed its form too openly against the pale background and needed to go. See the pattern. RIDLEY SCOTT himself cut them. Ergo, Mr. Brat, the original cut IS the Director's Cut.
I have no problems with film makers wanting make money, but to rerelease an oldie and pretend it's a Director's Cut is a cynical jab at moviegoers' wallets and purses. He is repackaging a film he was happy with the first time around. That is my point.
Also, I have no problem with Scott revisiting his earlier work, but only if it is a valid revisitation, like Blade Runner.
Now, Mr. Brat, you need to understand a little better the talkbacks that you read. Talkback like the one you posted in response to me only makes you look stupid and bellicose.

    A Question

    by mafu

I think seeing "Alien" in the theater will be fucking great. Like most peole here, I missed it the first time around. I've watched all the DVDs, my favorite being "Aliens: The Director's Cut" That's just me, though. My least favorite of the bunch is "Resurrection," followed by "Alien 3" in third place. My question: is David Fincher putting together a Director's Cut of "Alien 3?" I really hope so, mostly because I've heard there's a ton of extra footage, almost an hour's worth. And above all it's Fincher. If anyone knows what the deal is, fill me in.

Ridley Scott said he is revisiting his work and making them the way he wants them, NOW GENIUS. The old cut is the director's cut of a younger man, the new version is the elder's preferred vision. • Ever since I saw Alien, the only thing that really intrigued me was the mystery of the ship. I'd like a whole movie on that. I wonder if the director's edition will still have the scenes with the camera right in Weaver's massive bush. I remember seeing that and thinking, did she hide her cat down there?

The Additions and Subtractions in the ALIEN: Directors Cut

    by fatboy_roberts

The movie is actually 30 some seconds shorter than the theatrical release. Apparently most of the trims are lingering shots, a few seconds off this long take here, a few seconds off this long pan there, this establishing shot loses some front end, this establishing shot loses some tail end--and about 5 minutes gets lopped out overall. Ridley THEN went back and put in the cocoon sequence (Which doesn't necessarily contradict the queen lifecycle--there's nothing that says an Alien, stranded by itself without a Queen, can't cocoon himself up a couple eggs until one of them hatches a Queen) As well as the reception of the Alien Transmission. Also, Lambert yelling at Ripley for not letting them in has been restored, and Brett's death has been re-edited to combine both the theatrical head popping and the deleted scene head-crushing effects, along with Parker getting Brett's blood on him. Ridley WAS approached by 20th Century Fox, so it wasn't his initial idea, but once given the idea, he agreed to go back and re-edit the film himself. So this is a Director's Cut, although the first was a Director's Cut, too. This should REALLY be marketed as The Special Edition, as ALIENS was. But hey. Fox is fucking up the marketing on this one already by tagging that stupid "This is the scariest movie ever made" Bullshit to the trailers and posters. What better way to challenge the teenage audience of new viewers to look for every single seam in the production to ridicule. Also, the Alien3 that's coming out on the DVD set in December is more than likely the original edit shown to Fox before they went at it with the scissors. The editor of both ALIEN and Alien3, Terry Rawlings, worked on the re-edit for the DVD, and has apparently restored the picture to it's previous version as per Finchers' original intent for the film. All this was linked to earlier in Moriarty's DVD shelf report a couple days ago. It's good stuff.

    by lumin kadare

Mr. Brat. If you actually believe what Scott said you are one sad clown. Very sad. Whatever the man says, my points still stand. The addition of DIRECTOR'S CUT insinuates the director has finally got his say when previously he hadn't: WRONG. They are cashing in. Also, since Scott was interviewed rather recently for the trilogy boxset and then the DVD release and said why he didn't put the scenes in, I would suggest he's telling fibs. It all adds up that way. But, Mr. Brat, a person would need brains to spot these things - something you lack. Look around you, the weight of opinion rests in my corner. Go back to flaming and stop trying to lock swords with your superiors.

The Militant Fanboys Respond, and I respond Militantly

    by fatboy_roberts

I'm sorry, Rupee, Lumin--but that's just stupid. I was 2 when ALIEN came out theatrically. I didn't have a chance to see it. A total of FIVE MINUTES of this movie have changed. FIVE. And what's been inserted isn't fucking Greedo-style. There's no CHANGES. It's scenes Scott SHOT being put back IN. FIVE MINUTES OF IT. I just cannot understand the reasoning of depriving yourself of about 2 hours worth of the EXACT SAME MOVIE that you hold in such high regard, being shown remastered, restored and in multichannel surround sound in your local cinema because of FIVE LOUSY FUCKING MINUTES. That's some crazy kind of fanboy obsession, depriving yourself of an enjoyable experience because a couple deleted scenes got thrown in for a re-release. The mentality is foreign to me, and I'm damn sure glad I don't have that kind of myopic vision. I have the originals at home on DVD. I can watch that whenever I want. But special edition or not, moneygrubbing director or not, I'm going to be in that theater paying my money to watch ALIEN on the bigscreen. It's not often you get to go back and make up for something you missed out on when you were younger. Seeing this flick in a crowded theater on Halloween is one of those moments. Don't let your petty fanboyish vagina drippings stop you from sharing in that experience. Jesus. God forbid a director tinker with his own films. Hey, where were you purists pissing yourselves when Tolkien substituted out an ENTIRE CHAPTER of The Hobbit? Or made revisions to every book of The Lord of the Rings? You've ALL got SPECIAL EDITIONS of those novels on your shelves. This purist shit is retarded, to tell the truth, especially when it comes to cinematic changes this small. Fuck, I'm HAPPY they changed it, if only for the fact I doubt I'd ever see ALIEN in the theater otherwise, if Fox hadn't approached Ridley with the idea of a re-cut. If I don't like the changes--there's a FANTASTIC DVD with the original cut, with commentary, with production audio, with deleted scenes--THAT ISNT GOING ANY-FUCKING-WHERE. The fact there's a new special edition doesn't delete that DVD from existence, nor does it delete from my memory the movie itself. Jesus Christ. You fanboys are fucking crazy.

    by lumin kadare

Mr. Roberts. What can I say? Deprive myself? Hardly, since I've seen it all and have a copy of the original. Again, a talkbacker has let the testosterone to the talking. My points regarding The Director's Cut stand. They stood initially, before I was haraunged by the Brat, something which necessitated a response. My points stand moreso, since it turns out the studio asked him to do it. Director's Cut, my arse. You may be sad enough to go see a movie you've seen already with a few extra crumbs thrown in that you've also seen already, but I'm not. I'm not a fanboy, not at all. I am somebody who can smell a rat a mile away and won't approach. Fox want money, so you give it to them. Aliens' additions added a lot to the film(including a seriously pivotal scene which explains the infestation and damns Burke a whole lot more). Alien's additions is akin to adding a new hat to Malibu Stacey and fooling all the kids (as well as Smithers) into buying it (if you catch my referential drift). Militant, Mr. Roberts? I'm not at all surprised. Most morons are.

It looks like they're AFRAID to show any interesting scenes, probably beacuse they're not very interesting. Why didn't they stick with the look and plot of the game? Hell, the game was actually well-lit, but that's not what made it interesting. Why is there a party on a deserted island? And where the hell are they getting all those weapons? Yeah, the movies of the new millenium are just sooooo much BETTER! Fat, jowly has-beens pimping out their only good ideas from 30 years ago to make lifeless kiddie movies, lame "sex comedies" (with no sex) starring interchangeable pretty boys and girls, CGI-laden action movies that fail to provide any thrills or even hold the audience's interest for more than 5 minuts, leaden star vehicles for talentless, lip-syching pop stars. Yep! the 21st century is just a smorgasbord for cinemaphiles!

the directors cut of Blade Runner was very disappointing, where was the footage of Deckard visiting Holden in hospital?... why was the awful scene where Deckard "leans" on the snake maker not fixed... seems Scott simply dropped the voice over and precious little else. not that one that's online. It's different, and so freaking great. I think that one more than the other two captures what QT is going for. It has a real spaghetti western feel to it, heavier on the revenge aspect and the Texas locals (the church, Bud, etc). Great fricking music, plus you get a look at the anime sequences, like one where the Bride (presumably) shoots at a car with a sniper rifle and the bullet-cam flies straight through the car windshield. I can't help but geek out about this. It's going to be so great!
