Tracy Island launches THUNDERBIRDS 3!!! go! Go! GO!!!

Published at:  Sep 18, 2003 11:45:01 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with some coolness from Frakes' upcoming live-action THUNDERBIRDS movie... The key thing I like about this film is how colorful it is. There's so much doom and gloom science fiction that for me... It is actually a big relief to see something that feels colorful! The shots we see are still unfinished visual fx work, so that's why there's no fire or smoke billowing out from the rocket... or the other atmospherics in place. Looks fun though! Here ya go, thanks to Fran The Man and his amazing capture abilities!

HARRY..

FRAN THE MAN here in the UK just up the road from Elstree and Leavesden Studios...

This morning the BBC screened a WORLD EXCLUSIVE 15 sec uncompleted FX shot of THUNDEBIRDS 3 taking off from TRACY ISLAND....I'm guessing no one had the video ready to go that early, is I taped it, and pulled these shots.

First We see Tracy Island, and the Tracy's base itself actual opens up to allow Thunderbirds 3 thru...The we switch to the lower POV looking UP TB3 as it takes off, and then switch to an overhead shot which pans left to right revealing ALL of TB 3.

Actually, are these models? It looks real nice. It's good to see nice non cgi effects. I'm not anti cgi, it's just if you watch the Sci-Fi channel on a lazy sunday afternoon, you'll see enough cheap canadian cgi for a lifetime.

    by superzario

"it's a damn shame to see those cherished memories trampled on by letting every doofus fanboy pretend they always liked it." Fear not for I always thought it was a crappy show and will not support this nonsense. I hope you feel better now. To all other fan boys, I say this. Do not suport any entertainment that you were not a fan of from the get go. It is obvious that the real fans would prefer to keep us away so their cherished "babies" can die an unprofitable death.

    What is this movie about?

    by steal_dragon

It isn't that stupid premise that the Tracy family has been kidnapped, and it is up to Alan, Lady Penelope, and Tin Tin to save them is it. Because if it is there is no way in hell I will see it. How could they do this to Virgil Tracy, the best one.

    by splinter

    - but for the love of sweet weeping Christ would you SHUT UP ABOUT RELOADED!!! Every fucking third article there's some reference to how crap you thought it was - ENOUGH ALREADY! How can you still be so embittered after 6 months?! Let it go! Some of us saw it for the masterpiece it was and some didn't. I know who I'd rather be. GET OVER IT! Granted, a couple of CG Neo shots looked less than perfect but the Wachowskis and Gaeta have done more to advance CGI and virtual Cinematography than any other filmmakers alive today. Yes, Star Wars denialists, that includes Dinghy-Throat. As a filmgeek, Harry, you should be grateful for that!

    Too Early to Tell................

    by klone

It's too early to tell if this project will be worthwhile. You don't have to be a fan of the original to enjoy a current 're-imagining'. Don't fake being a longtime fan. I have never watched an episode of the original 'Brady Bunch' all the way through. The Brady movies made a few years ago were funny (Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!). I read some where that Anthony Edwards was going to be in the Thunderbirds movie. Anybody know if he is?

I am with Harry on this. "The Matrix" has perfect CGI. For me, "The Matrix: Reloaded" gouged on too much CGI like the diner who gouged on just too much food by just one pea, in Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life." "The Matrix: Reloaded" exploded all over itself in one fine mess. Ah well, I do have "The Matrix" to cherish as perfection.

Frakes appeared on TV here in the UK this morning and said that the shot of TB3 was just one whipped up to show what can be acheived with CGI these days. They also played the footage from the teaser that shows the silly-looking revamped TB2 landing near the Houses of Parliament.

    The puppets are coming!

    by toonpooch

Seriously. I've seen the new series promo: Thunderbirds with puppets again, like it used to be (with a bit of CGI thrown in). Apparently it's just waiting for a greenlight from The Powers That Be. Me? I can't see why they're dithering. Let the film go where it wants to go, the series can go back to the roots of the original. Big ships. Big rescues. Big tv action. That way everyone's happy...

    by uncapie

Looks like they studied the early V-2/A-9 rocket footage from White Sands. As for the circular concept house, there is something similar to it in the Hollywood Hills in California. It was the same house that was used in the "Outer Limits" episode, "The Duplicate Man." Don't know about the script, but at least Thunderbirds 2 and 3 look good.

    by commando cody

Gotta agree with Harry on this one. Part of the fun I'm detecting from the stills released so far is the overall palette that Frakes is using to make this bold, brash and sort of like a 60s movie. And that's a VERY refreshing change from the dour photography schemes used in too many movies these days. The designs so far all seem like good, sensible updating "tweaks" -- though that shot of the family running in their silver suits STILL bothers me. I still think that just looks whacked. I still think the smarter move would've been to update the show's standard blue tunics. Lose the infamous yellow sash and replace it with an emblem, but still come up with something that had more of a presentable military feel. As for you naysayers, Frakes has REPEATEDLY said this is going to be a larger than life adventure movie aimed at KIDS and at families -- so deal with it. Nothing wrong with that at all. In fact, those of us out here who deal with kids and would like to find something fun to take them to will embrace this movie (though if it's a big hit, I'm sure our wallets might groan over the subsequent toy bonanza sure to follow...but hey, I'd love a cool Thunderbird 1 for my desk anyway!) In the end, this will be another SCOOBY DOO to most of you. You might hate it, but the kids will love it...and families flocking to see it could make this, like Scooby, a solid surprise box office hit (which checking IMDB apparently raked in 150 million here and another 100 or so overseas.)

    by scarymonkey

but the question is: is it GOOD gay sci-fi/action? I, personally, see great potential in this gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) sci-fi/action movie. Certainly the visual effects on the giant red penis, um, I mean, rocket shooting off... I mean blasting... anyway, it looks very exciting... I mean, moving... uh, I'm going to stop now. But I AM interested in seeing this (and there is NOTHING wrong with that!)

"the Wachowskis and Gaeta have done more to advance CGI and virtual Cinematography than any other filmmakers alive today". Hate to disagree fella, but between Massive (the Artificial Life crowd behaviour simulator made for cgi battles in LOTR), and Gollum (just recently in a ROTK reshoot with gollum, they did motion capture ON LOCATION for the first time. Ever.), I'd have to say Weta Digital and Peter Jackson/Randy Cook have made bigger leaps.
On topic:- Thunderbird 3, ahh how the childhood memories come flooding back. Used to love Thunderbirds, but having seen it again as an adult my memory was tarnished. Nostalgia can lead to real rose-tinted spectacles. :(

    Thunderbird 3

    by trueogre

I can't believe someone is dissing the ships saying if he's ripped off the ships, why not have the puppets?

The fact is, it's Thunderbirds. These ships are essential to making a Thunderbirds movie. If they made a live action Thunderbirds movie with totally new designed ships, my god the floods of complaints would be overwhelming.

I wasn't overly excited at the prospect of the movie. But then I saw the trailer and I thought, hang on. Then I went online to research the movie background. That's when I found out that the movie was 15 mins of the Tracey family and the rest was Alan Tracy, Brain's son and Tintin. I really don't mind a live action movie and it's great to see the ships in action once again. What I really hate is the way they have to make the kids heroes and not the adults. Come on hollywood adults can be heroes too. We all looked up to one of the brothers or the father. Bill Paxton looks good as the father, but only 15 mins of screen time, maybe less? Come on Frakes, watch the originals!! It was a co-operative operation. Make it so number one! If there ever is sequel that is.
