Holy Hanzo!! Have You SEEN That New KILL BILL Trailer Yet'!

Published at:  Sep 11, 2003 7:38:16 AM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Forgive me for squealing like a schoolgirl, but GODDAMN, I love that KILL BILL trailer. The thing I like most about it is the absurdist comedy tone of the whole thing. If you think Quentin’s making a movie set in anything resembling a real world, think again. This movie looks like one great big over the top insane carnival ride of exploitation, revenge, and Uma. I’m in. Right now. I would kill Harry and wear his hide like a Jim Henson Creature Shop creation if I thought I’d get in to see this film one second earlier.

CHECK THIS SHIT OUT NOW!!

Thanks to Yahoo! Movies for getting this thing online and to Hattori_Hanzo and UncleFooka in our chat room for going apeshit crazy over it and getting my attention in the first place.

"Moriarty" out.

It was funny, I saw the trailer then went over to AICN to start the rumble in the chat, and everybody went apeshit over it, and first I called myself "Kill_Bill" in the chat, then changed back to my old AICN name "Hattori_Hanzo".

    Obnoxious

    by mysteryperfecta

What made Pulp Fiction so cool is how it didn't seem to be trying to be cool. Kill Bill is trying way, way too hard. To me, this comes off as self-consciously hip ad nauseum. The dialogue featured in the trailer is wince-inducing, like Quentin is trying to make every line quotable. NOTHING seems organic. It just seems like a paper-thin plot used as a excuse for a series of confrontations, featuring different fighting styles and different, sometimes ornate locations. And it all just comes of as movie masterbation, IMO.

Releasing this as postage-stamp WMV\Real is insane. This is one that neeeeeeeeds the Glorious FullScreen Quicktime. ... I liked the look on Thurman's face when the mace-weilding schoolgirl came out. Absolutely PERFECT. ... And I liked this delivery of the "I kinda did," line better. It was the first one that always seemed flat to me.

Pulp Fiction wasn't trying to be cool?

    by movietool

Were you watching some "not trying to be cool" studio cut I'm unaware of? Pulp Fiction DRIPS of trying to be cool - it just happens to be a great movie at the same time. This trailer, by the way, is fantastic - it REALLY makes me want to see if Uma ends up killing Vivica or if the appearence of the daughter changes the outcome.

Yes, this trailer has more Chigusa action!

    by renegadebushido

Chiaki Kuriyama is starting to have a very developed career for such a young actress. First she is knifing some dude in the nads in Battle Royale and now she's fighting Uma Thurman with a combat ball and chain. If that isn't a cool career I don't know what is. As for the rest of the trailer, it makes the movie look even cooler. I just hope they don't pull that "Uma cuts a sword in half with her sword" bit like twenty times. I seriously doubt that, Tarantino must have some cool tricks up his sleeve.

JUST WATCHED THE TRAILER...and why are we supposed to be excited

    by smeg for brains

Doesn't look like an awful movie, but it doesn't look very good either. If I want kungfu and sword action there are far better movies I can watch, and they don't have Uma or Lucy (which acting wise is a blessing). Actually, though I do love Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction, I am pretty uninterested in almost everything else Tarantino has ever done (though Jackie Brown wasn't terrible either). He isn't a god or anything. He had a good start, and after Pulp Fiction could have done any movie, with any budget, and any actor he could ever have dreamed of having, but he pissed it away on crap like From Dusk Till Dawn, until no one cared about him anymore, Jackie Brown was a disappointment, and it took him this many years (when people started becoming nostalgic) to actually get another movie made.

Damn. For the last four hours I have been returning to this site and was unable to enter any subject headings. Anyone else experience this problem? Anyway, finally saw the new trailer and it looks great. The funny thing is is that these scenes are probably the worst in the film. I mean, they can't show more than like a quick glimpse of the fight scenes because of the level of violence involved, so I really think we are all going to be blown away when the proverbial shit hits the fan in this movie.

    silly WHITE girl, not caucasian!!!

    by ikaruga

OK that trailer was cool, just as the previous one was. Gonna watch it, nuff said.

Now for the nitpicking, because I am determined to correct people's misconception that white is the equivalent of caucasian. It isn't! Arabs, Indians, and I believe Latinos are all Caucasian! The Supreme Court even said as much in the beginning of the 20th century, agreeing that being Caucasian had nothing to do with being white, which is why some Indian guy had to be kicked out of the country (since he wasn't white, and thus not eligible for naturalised citizenship). The SC agreed he was Caucasian, but not white.

Blech. Oh well, what can you expect from a film that has Lucy Lui (chinese) portray a Japanese character.... once a Mongoloid, always a Mongoloid i guess. hmm I wonder if Uma Thurman will reply "Silly Mongoloid girl." And hey, while we're at it, maybe Uma Thurman will say "Silly Negroid girl." to Vivica Fox! Why not?

What is great about this trailer? It looks like a fun action movie but it lacks substance! like the other person says PF was cool by not trying to be cool. It is obvious to me now that Roger Avary was intrical! I feels that the movie will be better than Jackie Brown; it has to be better. but I feels this wont be the best.

    by krigan

It is almost as good as pulp fiction and as good or better than reservoir dogs. Smeg for brains knocked it so I'm gonna defend it. The only thing wrong with QT is the long breaks he takes. He has already said he is gonna chill out for a while after this one. He said that in the latest fangoria & he also said he would like to do a small picture before the WWII epic. The small picture might be horror. If you want to see some graphic pictures of kill bill check out the new fangoria. If after viewing the photos in fangoria and watching this trailer you still do not think this film will kick all kinds of ass then you need to have your film geek card revoked.

Ikaruga - on ethnically correct casting

    by trader groucho

Um - having a Chinese person play a Japanese is not a great stretch. It's really like having an English guy play a French or German guy. Happens all the time. What Latinos and Asians have objected to - and with some justification - is Hollywood's historic habit of casting caucasians (okay, frikkin' white-ass cracker honkies) in roles written for Latinos or Asians. Your bringing this up reminded me of the minor and ultimately entirely insignificant brouhaha over the casting of Latino Robert Beltran as a Native American on Star Trek: Voyager. Beltran shut them the eff up by pointing out that Latinos have Native American blood, and that the line drawn between the U.S. and Mexico was drawn by European immigrants, not the natives (i.e., an Indian is an Indian regardless of which side of the border they're from). Enuff sed.

    Bugger

    by old peculiar

Arghhhh, I was expecting something more than a rehash of Korean/Japanese movies and a bit of Charlies Angel's humour!

What's with the stopping a sword fight because the daughter walks in. Duh!? WoT??? That's so crap.

Motorcycle chase!? Sword fight in the snow!? All been done.
One swordsman (woman) surrounded by lots of baddie swordsmen!? All been done.

I agree with a comment already, that this is trying to be cool rather than just being cool. "Then we'd be square" says Uma, drawing a square with her finger. Oh yeah, I get it, you did that in Pulp Fiction with "You're so square". Like, that's Soooo clever. The way he got the same actress to do the same thing with a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CHARACTER. Exactly how NOT to let a viewer get into a film, keep refencing your old movies. It was kind of cool the first time she did it, but NOT AGAIN!
God I hope the movie is better than this trailer.

I didn't knock Jackie Brown. I said it WASN'T bad.

    by smeg for brains

I also said it was a disappointment, which doesn't necessarily mean to me. After the incredibly huge success of Pulp Fiction it was a huge dissappointment. It wasn't anything compared to Pulp Fiction as far as money, and it most definitely didn't live up to the expectations most people had for his next film. None of this means I don't like the film. I just don't think it is as great a film as Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. It is far from a bad film, and considering that I haven't seen it in a bunch of years now I should probably watch it again, as I wouldn't be surprised if I liked it a lot more now. Anyway, my point was that he could have done anything he wanted to after Pulp Fiction, with any actor, or any budget, and the studios would probably have had a war over who got the pleasure of funding it. Well he decided to crap out From Dusk till Dawn, which killed any hollywood buzz around him, and then he made a disappointing (in many's eyes but not mine because I had already lost any expectations I had of him) screen adaptation of someone elses book. He should have written the biggest longest crime caper and cast every huge and little star he could ever have wanted, and made another smash. Then he would have been in the place to mess around a bit.

Some of this movie looks pretty cool. Most of what I could see looked okay. The biggest thing that irritated me was Uma's backflip. It looks like shit. It's slow, she doesn't tuck like she should, and its just such a poor use of wires. When Gordon Liu jumps up on that sword, it looks cool. Badass. But Uma can't fight, and never should've tried. See Ong Bak for the best action since Drunken Master II. Seriously.
