Steven Soderbergh's CRIMINAL... news from Argentina!
Hey folks, Harry here... The following report came from El Tati in Argentina, and it tells us about a remake of one of the great Argentinian films... NUEVE REINAS aka NINE QUEENS... which is being made by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh's Section Eight productions from a script co-written by Steven and this Gregory Jacobs fella. For those that don't know, Gregory Jacobs was Soderbergh's 1st AD on SOLARIS, FULL FRONTAL, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, TRAFFIC, ERIN BROCKOVICH, THE LIMEY, OUT OF SIGHT, THE UNDERNEATH, KING OF THE HILL. And to top all that he was the 2nd Assistant Director on MILLER'S CROSSING - which means he rules the earth... or has at least seen the Earth ruled well. Heh. The original Argentinian film was wonderful, and I highly recommend seeking it out. As for this remake... nice cast... brand spanking new director - so let's hope for the best! Here's El Tati...
Hey Harry, El Tati here from Argentina.
I'm a Big Fan of The Site, and i thought I´d give you a heads up regarding
the new Steven Soderbergh (y cant spell it :( ) production, CRIMINAL. It is not being directed by him, but a Gregory Jacobs, whoever that is.
and Starring John C. Reilly and Diego Luna along with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonathan Tucker, Zitto Kazann
It´s a Remake of NUEVE REINAS one of the best Argentine Films , released a couple of years ago.
The Story revolves arround 2 conmen who team-up by accident for a day´s work and end up getting the chance of their lifetimes with one big deal.
John C Reilly´s Character , played Wonderfully by Ricardo Darin in Nueve Reinas is a con expert, making a living for himself tricking a lot of people each day in the city streets.
He´s lost his partner recently and sees an oportunity upon meeting Diego Luna´s Character, a young man trying to make a living learning the tricks and life on the streets and raising money to get his
father out of jail.
The older man, has a law struggle with his younger sister and brother because he stole money from their fathers will upon his death.
Her sister Works in a 5 Star Hotel, where a big Time Foreign Bussiness Man is Staying.
He receives a call from an old forging artist, who`s made his best work till date, a set of very rare stamps, the "Nine Queens" Which are worth a fortune.
So the whole movie they try to sell the Nine queens to the Bussiness man with a LOT of complications, negotiations, Plot Turns , and surprises.
It is Really a GREAT Story, very Agile, entertaining and funny.
THe only problem i see with a Remake, it´s that the Story and the characters are very "local".
The situations, the dialogue, the city, they are all from Argentina and it wouldn´t be the same elsewere.
I'm looking forward to see what Soderbergh comes up for this.
Hope it makes justice to the original.
I hope you liked my heads up, VERY SORRY for my English and my bad spelling
Keep Up The Good Work!
Cheers,
El Tati

Wow! This sounds like it could be an even bigger smash hit than

Man! Can't wait to see the box office records this thing will smash ....... YEAH RIGHT! Soderbergh = MOST OVERRATED FILMAKER OF RECENT TIMES.

And Solaris was impressive in a way - it's not often you see a 90 minute movie which feels like its over 3 hours. Soderbergh is a fab director otherwise though, and the original is good, so this doesn't have to be bad. But I wanna see Ocean's 12! When can we expect it?
-
Steve Soderbergh is a fucking God, who actually has the balls to make ridiculous films that shouldn't (and occasionally don't) work, just because he is trying to challenge himself. I can't think of many other directors that straddle art-house and commercial boundaries this well. I don't think Solaris was ever really intended to be a box-office smash, and if it was then the studio was very naive. But Ocean's, Traffic and Out of Sight are some of the best films of the past five or so years. Give the guy a break.
-
This may be hard to believe but some people actually liked Solaris. (including me) And I respect Soderbergh for doing work that pleases him instead of trying to appeal to the masses.
And it's weird seeing people use box office earings and popularity to validate the worth of something. Meanwhile. Movies, Television and Music are dominanted with nothing but crap. Crap that is both popular and profitable. -
I like Soderbergh as much as the next guy, but making so many remakes starts looking like the filmic equivalent of playing in a classic rock cover band. Write a script, already. What, "Full Frontal?" Oops, never mind.
-
I'm there. And Solaris rocks! At least Soderbergh refrained from putting in 7 minute long shots of a car driving with no dialogue.

My impression of Steven Soderbergh: "Hi I'm Steven Soderbergh, I believe that every movie needs to be remade by ME, Steven Soderbergh, because I am goofy-looking pretentious ex-film student. I also donkey punch Jules Asner, but that's neither here nor there."

This is an excellent point Vector Matrix. It's makes sense for studio executives to judge the success of a movie by it's profitability because after all, they're selling widgets first and making art second. And while anyone's entitled to not like a particular movie , it is sad when something like Solaris, which is experimental AND requires a sizable budget to get made is greeted with contempt for being too ambitious and not falling into any obvious categories, even by supposed cineastes who should at least support the spirit of such an endeavor.

TRAFFIC is an insult to the fantastic BBC miniseries. As a matter of fact, ALL remakes are insults to the people that labored on the original films/TV shows.
I am glad that SCHIZOPOLIS is being given the Criterion treatment.
and I think that SEX, LIES... is very overrated. -
The original film is fantastic, thanks mainly to the stylish direction, the performances of the leads, and (at least for me) the refreshing foreign setting. But there isn't really anything original about the story. They basically took HOUSE OF GAMES and set it in Buenos Aires. I'll check this movie out if the word on it is good, but having seen the original as well as the previously mentioned Mamet film, this remake doesn't seem to be breaking any new ground.

...and the winner is Section Eight!! Thank God for Clooney and Soderbergh's Section Eight. They are without a doubt creating MAJOR dents in Hollywood. Who else could go from producing a 50's style domestic drama ("Far From Heaven") to a star studded heist comedy remake that ran circles around the original ("Ocean's Eleven")? I for one am eagerly awaiting "Criminal"
