Anton Sirius goes stargazing and might take Copernicus along at the TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL!
Hey folks, Harry here with the beginning of a madcap Toronto week to be... If you are in Toronto - send in reports - help find those that need to be found and cry out to be discovered and trashed. The good, the bad and the ugly of Toronto. I'm very much looking forward to the insanity and the cool of another Toronto. And if I could just find a tent filled with silk pillows and Anton Sirius' YOWSA category... I'd die a happy man!
Star-Watchers Guide for Toronto 2003
Sorry this is a day late, starkinder, but I think you'll forgive me when you find out what I've been up to -- aside from watching Copernicus lose his shirt at poker, that is...
There don't seem to be as many big, huge, honkin' movie stars attending the fest this year. Or maybe my definition of movie star needs some updating in a world where Rachel Weisz is apparently above-the-title talent. What there is, however, is an awful lot of living legends.
We're Not Worthy!: Robert Altman; Jack Black; Francis Ford Coppola; Peter Greenaway; Anthony Hopkins; Ian McKellan; Ridley Scott; Omar Sharif; Neil Young
A-List: Nicolas Cage; Ed Harris; Nicole Kidman; William H. Macy; Liam Neeson; Sean Penn; Meg Ryan; Denzel Washington
Yowsa: Kate Beckinsale; Cate Blachett; Gina Gershon; Maggie Gyllenhaal; Katie Holmes; Scarlett Johansson; Milla Jovovich; Virginie Ledoyen; Laura Linney; Kelly Macdonald; Franka Potente; Christina Ricci; Isabella Rosellini; Chloe Sevigny; Jennifer Tilly; Naomi Watts
Other Hunks: Scott Caan; Benicio del Toro; Robert Downey Jr.; Val Kilmer; Dylan McDermott; Barry Pepper; Bill Pullman; Sam Rockwell; Gary Sinese; Scott Speedman
Too Cool: Jane Campion; Toni Collette; Sofia Coppola; James Cox; Richard Curtis; Joan Cusack; Ileana Douglas; Stephen Fry; Vincent Gallo; Adam Goldberg; Keith Gordon; Jennifer Jason Leigh; Guy Maddin; Malcolm McDowell; Mark McKinney; Rita Moreno; Errol Morris; Tim Blake Nelson; Oliver Platt; Parker Posey; Mark Ruffalo; John Sayles; Lily Taylor; Gus Van Sant
Aside from the Coppola family reunion (if only Jason Schwartzman and Talia Shire could make it... I guess Roman could tag along too) the big story is who I already have interviews lined up with:
- genius actress Toni Collette, here with Japanese Story, and whose performance in the Sixth Sense still ranks as one of the best of the last decade as far as I'm concerned.
- docu-auteur Errol Morris. The Thin Blue Line, A Brief History of Time, Mr. Death, and now Fog of War, a portrait of Cold Warrior Robert McNamera. He's merely one of (if not the) best documentary filmmaker working today.
- and, oh year, freakin' DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, Omar Sharif, starring in Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran. We are not worthy indeed.
If you've got any questions for any of those folks, feel free to pass them along.
Jack Black is of course the Holy Grail of this fest interview-wise, but it doesn't look like Paramount's scheduling one-on-one interviews, preferring the big media scrums. I guess they figure unleashing Jack on just one reporter at a time is too risky.

i live in toronto and the only celebrity ive seen in the past couple of days was screech from saved by the bell.

My wife's stupid job is keeping us from going this year, but we've gone to Toronto the last couple years and I think it's an amazing festival. It's very well organized, the majority of the movies are top-notch, the city is very welcoming and the stars feel comfortable wandering the streets because no one hassles them like they would here. In the two years we've gone, I've spotted Mena Suvari (very tiny and very hot), Heath Ledger, Greg Kinnear, Sarah Polley (bad teeth and hot), Gina Gershon (trashy and hot), David Arquette, David Schwimmer, Larry David, Valeria Golino, Mary Steenburgen and, to anyone about to scream, "B-list!!", I also saw Dustin Hoffmann walking down the street eating an apple and Gene Hackman wandering the city with the complimentary film festival bag our hotel was giving away. So reading reviews from the festival this year is really gonna bum me out. Stupid job! Stupid wife!

by sexybeast
So all you Johnny Depp supporters just got the rug pulled out from under your feet. Depp apologized for his comments and said they were taken out of context, he loves America. He knows he was wrong. -
Quit blaming Canada for all your troubles, loser. Sure Canada takes 9 percent of the US film production business. BUT Canada also accounts for 10 percent of revenues back to US studios when films are released here. Film is an international business. That's why the IATSE is called "The International". If you can't hack it, go into another business. Crybaby.

I think AICN should have a talkback every Wednesday and Friday d
by vikingkitty
I mean, how many people really care about the Toronto Film Festival? Most Talkback fans would rather take the time to discuss new releases. Particularly on a day as bad as this one, when we have "The Order" and "Dickie Roberts" being released on the same day. Does anyone think these movies will combine to make $5 million at the box office this weekend? I doubt it.

look at all those names...wow

A lot of us care about the Toronto Film Festival, Vikingkitty...
by genericgeek
Every year I look forward to this reports, because it's a great heads-up about small and indie films that will "trickle down" all over the world in the next 18 months or so. Still, your weekly release talk-back is a good idea.

If you actually worked in the biz in the US, you'd know what I'm talking about. Alot of you geeks have no idea how hard it is to actually try to make a living in the biz in the US these days. 'numberface'...I've worked in the biz for 14 years and still love it, I just want to compete for jobs face to face. The canadien govt. is not playing fair, and that was pointed out in the review of the industry last year. Right now I'm working on 'Shall We Dance' (Richard Gere, J. Blo.) in Chicago for 6 days. They shot the rest of this in winapeg for over 50 days. the out of town crew was blown away at how fast and efficient we work. They had nothing but praise for our work and skill. The canadiens were slow and unskilled... Why do we keep losing these jobs??? Greedy producers and studio owners... THATS MY PROBLEM AND I'LL FIGHT FOR MY AMERICAN BROTHERS ANY DAY!!! go back to your basement apaartment and cream all over bad movies all you want, but before you tell me to quit my job, take a moment to think ...

Christ gripman you sound like a pissed off six-year-old. Canada sends back as much as it takes, as someone else already pointed out. And what about all the Canadian stars having movies made in the US? Its a nice little scapegoat you've got going there. Nor is Canada the only country you're loosing work to. Australia, New Zeland, Europe - it's an international business. A better idea might be to question those bullshit ads the MPAA is running citing how workers like yourself loose money due to piracy. Then ask yourself why you aren't paid better while the top tier sucks down the profits. At least then you'd have a LEGITIMATE gripe. The Toronto Film Fest. is a festival for the fans, which is more than can be said for a lot of them these days (what, no press pass? sorry, no room!).

I work in the biz in Canada. What you said about slow lazy crews in Winnipeg is an out-and-out lie.
