A list of 'young' Batman actors surfaces...

Published at: Sept. 3, 2003, 5:32 a.m. CST

Hey folks, Harry here... according to the wondrous Zorianna Kit of Hollywood Reporter fame... it seems that Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan will be given a whole bunch of actors a peek to see if they are BATMAN/Bruce Wayne or not. The list is... well a bit odd. Personally I prefered the Guy Pearce rumors - but... ok, that's not what it is looking like. Here ya go...

First up is Jake Gyllenhaal. He's 22 years old, first came to my notice with OCTOBER SKY, then blew everyone away with DONNIE DARKO - and again I feel with THE GOOD GIRL. He's next set to be seen in Roland Emmerich's THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW in Summer 2004. He's 6 feet tall and was taught to drive by Paul Newman. He's a tremendous talent, has the ability to be charming as hell as well as scary creepy. Ultimately, we've never seen him in this type of role before and he hasn't been known as having a physique that one would associate with BATMAN, but then... neither was Michael Keaton before BATMAN or Tobey Maguire before SPIDER-MAN. He'd be interesting.

Sure to be a fan favorite, Christian Bale. He's 29 years old and about as perfect as humanly possible to play a young Bruce Wayne / Batman. He first came to sight for most of us as Jim in Spielberg's underrated masterpiece, EMPIRE OF THE SUN... nailing one of the greatest damn performances out of a munchkin ever. In recent years he has been fucking great... over and over. In VELVET GOLDMINE, AMERICAN PSYCHO (a film I don't like, but love him in), SHAFT, REIGN OF FIRE and last year I think he became a geek god playing John Preston in Kurt Wimmer's EQUILIBRIUM - a truly great geek film. Next he is set to appear in THE MACHINIST - a thriller from the director of SESSION 9... Brad Anderson. At 6'1" he would be... perfect. Absolutely gob-smackingly perfect as BATMAN and Bruce Wayne. If Bale gets this part, get set for Nick Nunziata over at CHUD to begin doing backflips of glee! And he'd be right for doing them! For an "under 30 Batman" nobody is more perfect in my opinion.

While the list should end with those two - it doesn't... next is Joshua Jackson, 25 years old, best known for playing Pacey Witter on TV's DAWSON'S CREEK. He is an actor that while being in several films I have seen, has never captured my attention or made me think... Wow, who is this guy? He's 6'2" and from Canada. Probably most hated for having dated Katie Holmes... he's asthmatic and allergic to peanuts. He's been chosen as one of Teen People's "21 Hottest Stars Under 21" back in 1999. Got zero vibe for him playing Batman. Just don't have a strong opinion about him.

Next is Cillian (pronounced KILL-ian) Murphy - 29 years old and just really became known for his wonderful work in Danny Boyle's 28 DAYS LATER. I don't know how tall he is, actually - I don't know that much about him, but he was really wonderful in 28 DAYS LATER. Apparently he was an avid Rugby player, which means he knows how to knock the shit out of people and take it in turn. Good actor... don't know if he could pull off Batman.

Then there is Henry Cavill. He's right at about 20 years old. Probably best known to American audiences as being the son of Monte Cristo's hated enemy and former lover in the Kevin Reynolds adaptation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. He's also been in I CAPTURE THE CASTLE and will next be seen in the straight to video HELLRAISER: HELLWORLD. He's 6'1" - would love to play ALEXANDER THE GREAT - liked playing Rugby, but got injured and can't play anymore. I think he might be a bit too young for the character... he's a developing talent.

Next is Eion Bailey, man of mystery. I don't know how old he is or how tall he is. He's been in FIGHT CLUB and ALMOST FAMOUS and BAND OF BROTHERS and can't really place him off the top of my head... however, his face is very cold... Personally I like his look. If he's a really good actor, in many ways he could be a great choice simply because he would be... for most folks... seen for the first time. But does he have the acting chops of say Christian Bale or Jake? That's the key. He'll next appear in Renny Harlan's MINDHUNTERS.

Lastly - apparently Hugh Dancy, who is currently playing Galahad off in the UK in Bruckheimer's KING ARTHUR. He's 28 years old or so... 5'11" and is basically unknown to me - though is better known in the UK for his work there. His picture on IMDB is rather unfortunate.

I think the key thing to be looking at here is who isn't mentioned. I don't see Ashton listed or Josh Hartnett or Heath Ledger. The typical names that we normally hear for these age range characters seem not to be included, which I take as a very good sign. Apparently over the next 3 days, Christopher Nolan is having this group test... I believe Nolan will end up choosing between Bale or this Eion Bailey guy - just call it instinct. Warners is planning to have this officially untitled BATMAN movie shooting starting in February. Very interesting cast to choose from I think. Looks promising....

Meanwhile, I got confirmation about the Shepperton Studios story. The title of the Pre-production project is BATMAN: INTIMIDATION and it is the Christopher Nolan film. They've begun crewing up there with special effects guys, set designer and modelmakers... and the riggers and carpenters are lined up with the start of the main bulk of construction beginning around the start of October. The Art Department has been going at full swing for quite a bit now and they've been working on "quite extensive concepts" that have been shared only with personel that "need to know."

    Nice list

    by Heleno

But does this come from anywhere? I mean, I love Jake and Christian and Cillian and could see any of them as Batman, but are you just throwing names here or does it come from somewhere? And Guy Pearce has said that he wasn't approached and isn't keen in this month's Empire, so not sure where that gets us.

BALE! the rest are just weirdos and kids

    by iddqd

bale is the only real-deal here! the rest of those actors are either to jung or to thin/ugly. bale would be perfect.. he can act, he can be bad, he has got the body. dont screw this up and choose BALE!

I'm 36 and 6'2. Maybe I should play Batman then. Oh wait. Paul Newman didn't teach me how to drive.

    He's perfect for this.

Bailey could pull it off, but i see it going to Bale

    by cdoreilly

Eion Bailey, this boy showed his talent in one of the most powerful flicks I have seen in recent times - "A Better Place" Great actor, yet I do not know whether he has the presence of Bale. Christian has the cold bastard look that will fit Batman perfectly. Much as I would love to see bigger roles going to Bailey, I can see Bale running away with this one, and doing a bloody good job of it.

    Speaking of Batman actors....

    by ELGordo

I saw the trailer for Down With Love yesterday and I saw Evan McGreggor sproting thick rimed glasses and with his hair slicked back. He looked kind of familiar. Who I saw standing there, singing, dancing, expressing his love for Rene Zelwiger was Clark fucking Kent. That's right! Evan McGreggor would be perfect as Superman. He's got the nerdy look when he got the glasses on and the handsome heroic look when he takes them off. Fuck hunky sun taned beef mountains. This is the man for the job.

    Bale...

    by ClancyWiggum

...is my choice for the Bat, but I read this news item on batman-on-film.com a while ago. They had a source that said CB for Batman was just "fanboy wishing" (or something) and would never happen. I remember it because it pissed me off. I really hope that WB aren't that dumb, and that the source was wrong. Anybody else read that?

  • Sept. 3, 2003, 6:21 a.m. CST

    Cillian Murphy!!??

    by PaddyIrishman

Just saw him in Intermission at the weekend with Colin Farrell. Not a bad actor, havent seen him in 28 days later. If he can loose the Irish and put on a good American accent and maybe a bit more bulk I think he could be pretty good... other than that Christian Bale over the rest of them!

    Early Batman great but....

    by WillyWonky

when are we finally gonna get a Batman: The Dark Knight Returns movie? One of the greatest Batman stories ever put on paper would transfer to the screen quite well. Of course certain aspects of the story would have to be updated(i.e. some very dated 80's references) but that would be minor tweaking. For an older Bruce Wayne gimme Sam Elliot or maybe Tom Sellick. Or maybe one of you has a good older Bruce.

    Aha! Pictures!

    by Heleno

I rate that Band of Brothers guy pretty high now that I remember which one he was - he acted well in that, and he was one of the first Space Monkeys in Fight Club - remember, he's shaving his head in the background while Brad's talking to the Narrator. And I would like to register, here and now, that I have no problem with a "hunky taned beef mountain" playing Batman, assuming he can also act a little. You who wants Joshua Jackson as Spidey - boy, you trippin. Tobey has that sewn up, and frankly I think that Josh would do for Spidey what George Clooney did for batman. A few more random thoughts - it always amuses me how any mention of Christian Bale galvinises talkback opinion. Secondly, Bond is the most boring franchise and most irritating character ever to infest the screen, so don't curse Bale with it; even those of you who don't like him can't think he deserves that! Thirdly, I can't see DKR ever making it to the screen. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Warners are gonna think long and hard before introducing something that off beat to a potentially gold commercial franchise. Fanboys aside, it won't play in peoria. Watchmen is more likely to get screentime, and I can't see it coming any time soon either.

And I'm 6'2". Where do I sign? Anyway, anyone want to help a man out on the BoB guy, can't really place him. And for my money, Cillian Murphy would be the most interesting choice. No one outside of movies or porn has a body like CB, make Batman be someone who works out to kick ass, not pull the chicks (or get gigs with Joel Schumacher)

No ifs about it, Bale as Batman. And McGregor as Bond.

    by Big Dumb Ape

Of the choices mentioned (or really, those I can think of off the top of my head) I think Bale would be perfect for this. The right body, the right face, the right screen presence and the right acting chops to give the world a "young" Batman that could actually put seats back in a theater again. Well, assuming Nolan has a good story to boot! And while there's a tendency among some to shout out Bale for JAMES BOND too, I'm gonna predict that when Pierce finally departs after the next film, that role will be offered first to Ewan McGregor first. Though maybe Pierce is going sooner than I thought. Has anyone heard this bit about Keira Knightly being offered the next Bond girl role? Maybe the Bond people already ARE looking towards a younger incarnation with the next film. Oh yeah, since we're talking casting here -- when Peter Jackson does his KING KONG remake, I seriously hope he won't go too revisionist and he'll do the project justice by casting a really big monkey.

  • Sept. 3, 2003, 8 a.m. CST

man, don't get me started on monkeys...

for king kong i'd just like to see a really fat man in a bad ape suit. like at the end of trading places. bale is bruce wayne - billy bob is the scarecrow! bad phantom menarse quote 2 "storm's comin', annie"

...I didn't know this guy still had a career. My vote is on either Bale or that Eion Bailey guy. Never heard of him, but he looks a bit disturbed, could work for him. The others all look like they belong on some bad WB teen drama.

    Can't Decide

    by KingOfTheFools

I really can't make up my mind on this one. All I know is I don't think Jake is really right for this roll. And for the love of GOD, please NOT PACEY!! Josh Jackson as the Batman?!?! No, no, no, no, no! I think a complete unknown should be cast. And while we're on the subject of casting super hero movies, why doesn't Warners just cast Bruce Campbell as Superman already?? I can't be the only one out there who thinks that Bruce looks an aweful lot like Kal-El with no help from special effects or make up. Then again, maybe it's just me. Thank you for your time.

Any of these guys would be great.....as Nightwing

    by Drath

Why the hell do they insist on casting so fricking young? Okay, I know the answer to that, FUCKING TEENAGE AUDIENCES. Well, to be fair, there's also the embarassing geezer syndrome that must be avoided. Aside from Sean Connery, action stars past 50 are mostly hard to believe, and even Sean gets by on good will more than anything else. Okay, Ahnuld was good in T3, but that flabby beach photo really dented the magic, didn't it? Still, Batman at his best is not a twenty something. Unless you're going to start from the very very beginning and take us through his origin like Milius did with Conan, don't bother making him so young. At the very least you want a guy in his mid thirties. And there should be a decidedly big age gap between him and Dick Grayson, who should be included at some point because the whole Death in the Family arc was too great to leave out of a Batman franchise. Play up the tragedy and not the cheesy side of it and you have a strong dramatic tale. Robin and Nightwing are surragate sons goddamit, not fucking homoerotic lovers. There's nothing wrong with being gay, but that whole subtext is a sexually immature dick trip people need to grow the fuck up and forget! And dammit, SOMEBODY CAST CATHERINE ZETA JONES AS SELINA KYLE/CATWOMAN!!!! Sigh. There, I've vented. Now the movie can suck and I'll just wait for the Animated Series to come out in a worthy DVD box set.

Who the fuck names their kid Pacey anyway?

    by mortsleam

It's funny, I finally saw The Count of Monte Christo last week and thought two things: 1.) Jim Caviezel would make a pretty decent Bruce Wayne. 2.) That kid Henry Cavill looks just like a young Jim Caviezel. That's some wierd shit. Too bad he's just way too young, even if they're going with a Year One story. And I'm sorry, but Gyllenhaal is just too wierd looking to pull off Bruce Wayne. They need someone who's face is on straight. The simple fact is, out of everyone mentioned, Christian Bale is the perfect choice. He can be suave, intense, convincingly pull off fight scenes and an American accent. He is Bruce Wayne. Which means WB's gonna go with Pacey...

GO WITH BALE, OR DON'T BOTHER

    by Mel's Rockpile

Bale deserves this role. He proved he can act at age 10. Since then, he's been offered some decent roles in his acting career, but nothing substantial enough to make him a household name. Throughout his career, he has accurately portrayed characters with traits similar to those of Batman, so there is no doubt in my mind that he wouldn't be perfect. Physically, he can pull off both the "playboy" (pretty-boy) side of Bruce Wayne, as well as the brooding, obsessed crime-fighter. I have thought he would be perfect for this role before there was mention that he was in the running. I just hope that Christian has enough interest in the role to accept it if it is offered to him. He is not too old whatsoever, whereas I feel that most of the other contenders are. I would MUCH rather see someone closer to 30 rather than 20 in this role. I don't think I could take them seriously if this were not the case. PLEASE DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE CHARACTER. And for the love of all that is holy and pure, don't even LOOK at Joshua Jackson!! I will tear up all of my Batman memorabilia if Nolan chooses fuckin' Pacey!!! Sweet Jesus!!

    Christian Bale?

    by ErrantTwin

Harry, I love this site but I have to point out that you're re-writing your own history a bit. You say here that you loved Bale in American Psycho even though you hated that film (and justifiably so). But in your review of said film you wrote: "2. Christian Bale, who I once loved when he was a child, drove me INSANE during this film. Have you ever seen SIX STRING SAMURAI? Well, I love that film, save for one scene and character that drove me batty... It's the cannibalistic 50's family with a Dave Letterman-esque father figure that screams in a joyful xanex blitz all of his dialogue. I loathe this character... This is exactly Christian Bale's delivery throughout the film... Like fingernails upon a chalkboard..." I'm so confused...

  • Sept. 3, 2003, 10:04 a.m. CST

    Jake is great

    by K|LLDOZER

because he's definitely got the "strange loner" aspect of Batman down right - but he looks too boyish. I just can't picture him kicking thug ass. I can picture him calling thugs "Fuck ass!" but not kicking their asses. He might actually make a good Robin, at some point though. I'd say Bale all the way.

  • Sept. 3, 2003, 10:05 a.m. CST

Equilibrium was the biggest hunk of CHEESE I'd ever seen!!!

    by Batutta

I mean, Gunkata!?!? Fucking Gunkata?!?! Puhleease...That said, Bale would be great, although he has an impregnable quality about him that keeps the audience at arm's length, which is fine for Batman, but Bruce Wayne could use a touch of humanity. I like the mystery man at the bottom, too.

    not a bad list, really

    by KenKRK

Although the Jake Ghyllenhal pic does show that he hits the gym, he looks drunk and he's being molested by the guy behind him! In any event, I guess most of you are convinced it's Bale's baby, and I'm inclined to agree. But most of these picks are definitely better than what had been suggested in the past. I know people hate Aston Kutcher, but like we've said, Keaton was known for playing comedic goofball roles before wowing us as Batman. I don't think you can ever know how good an actor is, if all they do is comedy(especially the comedies Kutcher insists on starring in). The guy from Fight Club would work, although I haven't seen him in enough of anything else to gauge his acting ability. I just saw Equilibrium, and yeah, I think Bale could handle a lot of the action required. Yeah, I think some of these other guys might be better as Nightwing, the kid from Count of Monte Cristo for example. Why he's on the Batman list is beyond me. Not only is he too young to drink legally, but he REALLY looks younger than 20. I knew kids in high school with beards. All things considered, I think this might be the one to actually see filming. We've had a lot of false starts, and I can only hope both Nolan and Goyer stay on and see this through.

No disrespect to the other actors, but i think bale is the only true choice for Batman. I like Joshua Jackson, but i cant see him as Batman.

  • There's only one topic I feel strongly enough to post about on this site, and as long as it's an active issue, I'll keep banging the same drum over and over. Wes Bentley is the perfect choice to play Batman. In the same way that Tobey Maguire was perfect to play Spider-Man, in the same way that Elijah Wood was perfect in LOTR, in the same way that Chris Reeve was able to pull off Superman, in the same way that Clint Eastwood woulda made a perfect Miller Dark Knight, they need to cast BATMAN/Wayne with faithfulness and respect for the character's most iconic attributes. And those are that he freaked out when he saw his parents get killed, and is now operating on some other level. Wayne's not at all like normal humans; his will is too great. He's insane or superhumanly driven (and what the heck would be the difference between the two?) -- the point is that Bruce Wayne is every bit as superhuman as Superman et all, even though his physiology is the same as every other earth-born human. The thing that makes him superhuman is the change that took place in his psyche when he saw his parents murdered. He fights crime in an attempt to make sense of his world; he fights crime thru sheer force of will and fear. OK -- so he's gotta be, what? Two things: He's gotta seem determined, and he's gotta seem scary. This is why previous film Batmans were so poorly chosen. NONE of them were the least bit intimidating; all of them had this Everyman kind of quality. I'm not just slandering the Schumacher debacles, either. Tim Burton's Batman movies were just as unfortunate (pretty set design aside) as the two movies that followed. Tim Burton had the character all wrong (he misunderstood Superman, too: "I'm gonna make him a dark psychopath!" Brilliant, Tim. Great thinking. Take Superman back to his roots. Take us back to the days when Superman was a dark... er... um... psychopath?) Tim Burton cast Michael Keaton because Keaton epitomized Batman's qualities as an "Everyman"?!?? Tim Burton obviously had no clue what makes the character tick, or what makes the character iconic. Batman is not Everyman. Batman is the furthest thing in the world from Everyman. He needs to be larger than life. Like, aLOT larger than life. Think Man with No Name. Think Gene Simmons, circa 1978. Think DeNiro in Godfather II. Think Jaws. He needs to be larger than life. Which is why I don't have alotta confidence in somebody like Bale, who's a good enough actor but always has this jerky, lightweight, smarmy kinda quality. Gyllenhal was brilliant in Donnie Darko, he's a fine actor and a likable presence but his likability is sort of a mark against him here, I think. He's got a goofy, down-trodden, fidgety kinda vibe to him that would be ALL wrong for The Bat. I mean, I've only seen him in Darko but he just doesn't seem to have the absurd levels of intensity necssary to play Batman. Guy Pearce ain't on this latest list, and that's a good thing. He woulda been spot-on as Daredevil. He may someday make a fine Aquaman. Keep him away from Batman. Wes Bentley is the perfect Wayne/Bats. He has the right kind of weird air about him. He's got freaking gravitas. And that's something you need in spades if you're going to play this character. Bentley encompasses the qualities that would be essential to making Batman believable. On one hand, he's got the air of being well-bred, he seems to have come from money, and that's obviously important. But just as importantly, he seems completely cracked in the head. He's got the eyes of someone who's not quite right. In American Beauty especially, the kid looked like somebody'd rearranged ALL the furniture upstairs. He looks crazy. At the SAME time he ALSO seems supernaturally confident and absolutely self-possessed. He was born to play Batman. I don't know if he's tall enough or physically imposing (these being the last requirements needed to play the character), but just give him steroids or whatever they did to Tobey for Spider-Man and I'm sure it'll work out. If he's too short have him stand on a box or something. It's the movies. The most important thing is emotional believability -- everything else can be faked, but no amount of camera trickery can replace good acting, good casting. You can't give a performance more gravity using CGI. Not as far as I know. And I can't think of another youngish actor working today who could do a more believable Batman than this Bentley character. Also, they shouldn't put him in the big rubber gumby suit. They need a new suit. The old rubber suit is stupid. Who the hell could fight crime with a goddamn cowl that doesn't let you turn your neck? For four movies, Batman's been running around looking like a whiplash victim. Freaking neck brace. Ridiculous. Back to square one, folks. Make it work. Do it right. It's worked for the Marvel movies... DC characters are even more elemental and iconic so a little bit of care will go a long, long way. Along with King Kong, Batman is one of the 20th Century's Great Post-Industrial Myths. There's a great BATMAN picture waiting to be made. WB simply look at what Marvel's done (with X-Men and Spider-Man, and even to some extent the Hulk... for that matter look at what Jackson's done with LOTR) and follow suit. You don't have to slavishly follow every detail of a character's origin and whatnot, but you do have to keep a close eye on the core that makes the character work. Show the characters some goddamn respect. (The guy from that car commercial a couple of years ago was the best Batman they've had so far.)

    Cillian Murphy???? Too short

    by RowanM

The Irish man who hails from the great metropolis that is Cork City. Dropped out of a law degree in U.C.C. to take on acting full time with a drama group based there. His first claim to fame is a film called Disco Pigs which first did the rounds as a play that recieved critical acclaim, more so for the actress in that rather than him. Was one of the founders of a great Acid Jazz band called "The Sons of Mister Green Genes." Very popular with college students. I don't think he's with that band any more. Personally I don't like him much. I found him to be rude and full of himself. Personal feelings aside, I don't think he's suitable for the role. He's way too short. Spiderman short. Christian Bale on the other hand is absolutely perfect. I absolutely loved Equilibrium. What a great show. Poor enough ending though. Anyway, my money is on Mr. Bale.

    BALE OR NOTHIN'!!!!

    by JacknifeJohnny

I loathed American Psycho for watering down the book, and killing the strength of the idea; but Christian Bale absolutely nailed Patrick Bateman, effectively keeping my ass seated. After I watched Bale bring Bateman to life, my comic soaked brain screamed one thing..."HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT'S BATMAN!!!!" If Nolan goes w/ a (in my mind)lesser runner up, I'll see it just because it's Nolan, but Bale owns this fuckin' role...HANDS DOWN!!!

    by elviskilledjfk

okay... he was good in velvet goldmine... but listing Reign of Fire isn't exactly showing us a reason why we should want him to be in the next batman flick... that is unless we want the next batman movie to be bad. Equilibrium was... fun at best, but overrall it was a terrible movie with a poorly written script that's just barely saved by some really cool action. isn't guy pierce too old to play a young batman?

    Who Cares?

    by Nevermore

Seriously, an actor is only as good as the material he has to work with, and we all know that Warner will screw this up. Nolan's a good director and all, but he's gonna get some crap script to work with, and anything dark will be forced out of the film by studio suits who have no understanding of the source material. Sure, Christian Bale would be great to play a young Bruce Wayne, but only if the screenplay captures the true character. For what Warner Bros. will likely produce, they might as well get Chris Klein or Paul Walker.

UH...what? Isn't a law, or something along those lines, that Batman must be an American? I'm not one to be called the uber pro-Amercian patriot, but the Dark Knight played by a Brit seems just a tad vulgar. Bale as Batman?!?! Come on guys, you have to be kidding! Check out Mr. Bailey...he looks all kinds of fucked-up! Just the guy we need to play a true American Hero (Whatever that means).

    a british batman

    by nuno75

when i saw american psycho and equilibrium, both times i can clearly remember thinking how great this guy would be as batman, and i still think so. i have not seen another actor in any other movie that would be better for this part. as far as his being british, i find this to be ironic because i recently read another thread about a movie adaptation of a british comic book called "hellblazer" and keanu reaves is apparently playing the hero, who is supposed to be british. almost every comment in the talkback section was about how horrible and inappropriate it would be to cast keanu or any other american as this classic british hero; how it would be lessening the character to make him american... which offended me greatly. the irony is that the actor that almost everyone, including myself, is wanting to see as batman is british.. and i only read two posts that had negative feelings towards a british batman... one by an american who just thought he should be american.. and (laughing to myself) one by a brit who thought the ACTOR would be lessened by playing an american... lol... this makes me proud to be an american because we can look past what particular plot of ground you were born on when it comes to whether or not you should play one of our superheroes. and i thought AMERICANS were supposed to be racist (or whatever you would call it in this case).

Defend this statement "jerky, lightweight, smarmy kinda quality" in reference to Bale, have you ever even seen this guy?! BTW we agree on the suit, less rubber, more kevlar. Also I'd have no problem with Bentley IF THE FILM WAS FOCUSING ON AN EARLY TWENTIES BATMAN. As a matter of fact, in conversation with friends two years ago, I was the first one to bring him up for casting of "Batman:Year One", pretty much for the same reasons as you, but he doesn't look aged enough to pass for late twenties/early thirties.

Bit confused about the brit/yank actor thing...

    by NaughtiusMaximus

Because the impression I got from the old Constantine talkbacks was that the actual *character* was being changed to an American, not the fact that an American was playing a Brit. I'm sure that if they found an American to play Constantine and he had the accent and the looks, it wouldn't matter a fig, not to me anyway. I'm sure there'd be a riot if Bale played Batman and we were all told that the character was being changed to an upper class Englishman fighting crime in tights. As long as Bale plays the role as a dark denizen of Gotham City, then all power to him. I'd say the same thing if an American did the same with the Constantine character and played a down-and-out magic man living in London with demon's blood.

Shoot, I'm there.

  • That's a double standard. I don't care who plays any part so long as they're good, but brits have been really pissy about casting THEIR iconic characters with actual Brits, but it's okay for one of them to play American icons like Batman and Superman and Scarlet O'Hara(who, despite the name, WAS a southern belle). It's not enough that brits have cooler actors in general anyway, they have to FLAUNT it too! Pfah!

    by Devil'sOwn

In case, y'know, our approval counts for anything this time. Hey, none of this amounts to Jack Shit if you ain't got a GOOD story for your perfect talent to act in. All I've heard about this proposed idea over the past whatever now is "Oh, yes! We're a- gonna do a real jim-dandy dark and disturbing take on Batman. This'll mark a whole new chapter in the Caped Crusader's cinematic career- this is the real Dark Knight fans have been clamoring for, etc., ad nauseum, word to yer mammy." It all sounds very hollow to me. This is an iconic character- more than half the work has already been done for you! I definately don't want to oversimplify the situation, but it certainly does merit questioning: What's the deal? How much trouble is it to get a kickass action-suspense movie off the ground? Seems to me like there's at least a few made every year. Oh, I see the problem. This has Batman in it, right. Look, I'm not entirely sure what kind of movie the studio thinks they want to make, set at what point in Batman's career, what point they're trying to make, what villains they want to use, what familiarity the current filmmakers have with the source material, but if I may humbly suggest, you can't go wrong with the confident and brooding Bale caught in the middle of Gotham's corrupt police department and Arkham Asylum freaks like Scarecrow, Riddler (who absolutely must be played by Kevin Spacey), and, for a physical challenge, Solomon Grundy.

And in Band of Brothers, I thought he turned in an amzing, understated performance as a thoughtful, literate, philosopher-type turned war-hardened soldier. I remember watching Almost Famous and saying "Is that the guy from Fight Club? nah, couldn't be." He was a chameleon in that movie. The biggest knock against him? He did appear in some episodes of Dawson's Crack. Other than that he'd be a great choice, not that I'm rooting against Christian Bale, but either choice would be good, in my opinion.

Since I'M not going to direct the next BATMAN, I wanted to throw his name out there. This only works if Batman is right at 30. Of the others mentioned above I'll go with Christian Bale. what a big list of pus****s! Clark Batram from Batman Dead End is the only REAL choice. If you check out the Making Of Batman Dead End you'll see he'd make a great Bruce Wayne too. After seeing that film, he is the only logical choice at this point. Not a bunch off pansie-a** teen pinup boys from the WB network. please. every Batman movie that WB has put out sucks a**.

Eion Bailey has an intense look about him, but since I'm a fucking dilettante I haven't seen him act. I think that Bale is a good enough actor of intensity and physicality to give the project some credibility if he took the role. Cillian Murphy is probably the dark horse of the three.

...Bale for Batman. He's got the brooding good looks, he's proved he can act, he can do action (equlibrium was shit but the few bursts of action were fucking awesome), and he looks scarier and more intimidating on a tanning bed than Michael Keaton looked in body armour at night with Tim Burton directing (though Keaton was great in Batman). The people have spoken, oh and for christ sakes give the guy a decent script to work with or it'll end up being shit whatever you do.

    Cillian Murphy gets my vote.

    by Ivan_Mtl

Of all the actors mentioned on the list, I would have to go with Cillian Murphy because he is the only one who has starred in a film that I actually enjoyed (28 DAYS LATER). Also, I happen to think that he's perfect for the role. I have no problem with Batman having an accent since Bruce Wayne apparently spent a great deal of his youth in Europe and Asia studying under various mentors. I'm pretty confident that Christopher Nolan is going to go with this guy. I mean, this is the artistic genius that made MEMENTO, so I couldn't see him settling for some gay pin-up poster boy in Christian Bale as Joel Schumacher might be inclined to do. Besides, did american psycho and equilibrium even make any money? That's the bottom line as far as studio execs are concerned.

28 days Later, we may have a good choice

    by Phildogger

Anyone who has seen this knows that he would be perfect. This guy pulled off one of the most difficult roles imaginable. Christian Bale is too old, and seems too smug, but actually would be my second choice. Third Choice, anyone but the kid with the FAT HEAD from Dawson's Creek.

    Deat god not Joshua jackson

    by biglawdog1

Just take Joshua Jackson off this list. Talentless hack. I'd rather have Clooney back or worse, Kilmer and his wooden Bruce Wayne. Gyllenhale is not a good choice- too young though I would have liked him better than Toby for Spiderman. Bale is a better choice though its probably just wishful thinking. I always thought Jude Law would have made a good Bats if he put on some weight but I think Law's just a strong talent and can play practically anyone. My biggest fear about the next Bats movie is the director will be forced to cave into the studio wanting another "family friendly" Batman- one thing they forget is Batman's a psycho - he dressed up like a bat and beats people up. THe last two bat flicks embraced the campy batman b/c they thought it was good for business and totally forgot that it was Burton and Keaton's tortured Bats that made the franchise in the first place. Hopefully, whatever Batman project comes down the pipe, they'll remember to start with the Batman fan base and rely on word of mouth to get everyone else to the theatres.

    As a follow-up

    by biglawdog1

Casting somebody "big" like Kutcher or Hartnett would be a mistake. Keaton pulled off the first Bats but he's chamelon-like in the first place. We'd be looking at Kutcher or Hartnett, who have kinda found a nitche in Hollywood but its not one that includes "action star". Hartnett has talent (ignore Hollywood Homicide- I blame the screenwriters) but I can't see him as either Batman or Superman, roles in which he is frequently mentioned.

He was the writer in BoB, as far as i recall. It's either him or Bale. It can't be the fat headed kid, why not just get fozzie bear to play Batman. It can't be that hard. Batman just exudes cool. There's no other way to say this: the British are the best actors on the planet. Period. I think it probably has something to do with Shakespeare, but I'm not sure of that. Anybody thinking an American needs to play Batman need look no further than Black Hawk Down. Half the cast was British (Ewan MacGregor, Orlando Bloom, Draco Malfoy's dad, etc.) and so convincingly played American Special Forces that most pepole don't even realized they were English. Bale will be a great Batman because he is a great actor.

Henry Cavill could be interesting - I haven't seen a lot of him, but did enjoy what I did get to see of him in The Count of Monte Cristo. I've never even heard of Eion Bailey - but he does look a bit mysterious in his picture and it's always nice to have a fresh face in major roles every once in a while! But, hey, whoever is chosen, I still think that this movie is going to kick ass because CHRISTOPHER NOLAN IS GREAT!!!! Anything's better than what Joel Schumacher left us with!

"Have you ever even SEEN a Christian Bale film?! Moreover, all sources elswhere have pointed to Bale as Nolan's first choice, in the arguement with the WB over Casting an actor(Bale) or a teen idol(Kutcher)." In answer to your question, yes... I saw two very bad Christian Bale films - AMERICAN PSYCHO and EQUILIBRIUM. I believe both tanked at the box office (correct me if I'm wrong). I also happened to see one VERY good Cillian Murphy flick in 28 DAYS LATER. This guy can act, and has the stage credits to prove it. He also looks the part. Just compare the two photos that this site posted. Cillian Murphy has a dark brooding quality and a nicely toned but not overly muscular athletic build which make him ideal for the role of Batman. And if eyes are truly the window to the soul, female movie-goers (who probably stayed away from 28 Days Later because of its subject matter) will be instantly drawn to his Bruce Wayne because of the child-like vulnerability that they evoke. How do I know this? Yep... my girlfriend, who I dragged to see 28 Days Later, summed it up when she said, "... those eyes? And he's Irish too?" lol

It seems kind of strange that she's even being considered. Hasn't Avi Arad prided himself on the fact that they've casted the best actors FIRST for their projects? Isn't that the foundation to his whole "winning formula?" To (reportedly) offer the role to someone who's not even an actor in the first place makes it seem like he doesn't have a whole lot of respect for the sanctity of the source material and is simply whoring one of MARVEL's properties to a movie studio. I understand that "Mort, the Dead Teenager" would be a teen movie with an obscure following, but that doesn't mean you have to put Jessica Simpson in it to get butts in seats. If it's handled with respect and if it's worth making, the movie should sell itself. Plus, I'd feel a lot more comfortable about this movie and the integrity of "MARVEL Studios" in general if Domenique Swain and Elijah Wood were the ones cast, although I can't say how much of this is rumor. Hell, who knows if 'Mort, the Dead Teenager' is even being made? Just a few days ago Jessica Simpson was attached to 'Fantastic Four.' Bottom line: you should earn the role.

...And Another Thing...On Filming The Dark Knight Returns...

    by Barron34

Wes Bentley would be good if he were OLDER. Bale is youthful, but not a kid (like Gyllenhall). If Nolan is going with a Batman: Year One approach (and I hope he is), Bale would be perfect: mature but not middle-aged. This way, Bale can stay with the role for a long time if this film is good and if it revives the franchise. This is why a Year One approach is smart, in my opinion: it reintroduces Batman in a fresh way without reprising Burton's work. THEN, if this movie is a success, subsequent Batman movies can star Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman as he gorws more and more into the role of superhero/vigilante. Thus, we can have a movie chronology of the career of Batman, from start to middle to end. I know people want to see Miller's Dark Knight done right on film, but given the poor track record of Warner's with Batman, I would urge fans to hold off on demanding that too soon. I suggest that we wait until at least SEVERAL good, solid, and consistent Batman movies are made in a row with the same cast and production talent. Once they have proven that they can make good (or even great) Batman films, I would suggest only THEN should Dark Knight Returns be made as a capper to the franchise. AFTER that, Warner's could move into Batman Beyond type territory that reimigines Batman in a fresh way that is not inconsistent with the character's past and Miller's important work (perhaps Dini and Timm could be brought in at that point to produce). In any case, we as fans should NOT want a Dark Knight Returns filmed soon, lest Warners fuck it up. Better to let Warners and their creative people PROVE that they can make good Batman films consistently, and THEN (and ONLY THEN) should they approach the Holy Grail of Batman stories: Miller's dark Knight Returns. Otherwise, we fans might end up with a shitty or sub-standard film version of that classic, which would be a worse insult than if the film were never made at all. That's my opinion. Barron out.

PEOPLE...if you want to see Eion Bailey as a MAIN character in the film where he proves his acting abilties, go see "A Better Place" it's one of the best first outings by a director i've seen. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0118705/ And BALE all the way...Eion is a great actor but Bale has that quiet intensity.

    by linktothepast

Ever since I saw American Beauty, I thought,"Hey, if they ever go back and do 'Batman Year One', Wes Bentley would make a great Batman". He's got the same twisted/psychotic thing going on in his eyes, much like how Michael Keaton had which made his performance as a billionaire who is psychotic just enough to put on armor and hunt criminals at night believable. c'mon, wheres his name? Hell of a lot better than Joshua Jackson!!!!!!!!

Questions For All Talkbackers If Pacey Picked

    by Miami'sCanadian

I'm wondering a few things, are you turned off by him because he starred in a WB teen show? and would you still watch if he did? I'll admit I did watch the show first three seasons and he would play the goofy rich spoiled part pretty good of Bruce Wayne and turn it into a brooding killer when his parents are murdered like when he was tormented by that love triangle with Katie Holmes. I actaully met him a few times in Vancouver and he deserves the part for being cool and down to earth. How many other big name actors will go with a low crew member to a hockey game and get piss drunk like regular people?

    by Ribbons

I also know that Mystique was played by a supermodel but the role didn't require much talking or screen time the first time around, and part of the role depends on an alluring look. Plus, the X-Men movies are ostensibly big ensemble pieces anyway, so her work is supported by that of others (and Romijn-Stamos has some acting ability, so it's a little forgivable). There, no more talking about 'Mort, the Dead Teenager.'

Actors owe us their best work, but they don't necessarily owe us a good attitude. Sorry for that one, I just felt it was appropriate. Anyways, I'm sure that he is stigmatized due to the fact that he was a member of Dawson's Creek, but at least three of the guys on the list given by Harry are more qualified than him. Better question: do you want him to play Batman because you think there's no one better-suited for the role, or because you like him?

'i don't think that turning batman british would necessarily mean changing him to "upperclass"... perhaps this is a reflection of your opinions of brits compared to yanks... ' - What the fuck are you talking about? Bruce Wayne, who, by the way, just happens to be Batman, is a millionare playboy, which kind of makes him 'upperclass', don't you think? Regardless of whether he's a Brit or a Yank, upperclass generally means well-to-do. Stop acting like the wounded underdog.

Bad choices all. Warner Bros. need to think "out of the box"...

    by Commando Cody

Let's face it, Warners seriously dropped the ball and destroyed a franchise with BATMAN & ROBIN by trying to make it too kid friendly and too damn toy merchandisable. This time they need to push the envelope and be DARING in their choices, certainly over the lead, to attract media and fan attention. In fact, why does Batman have to be your cookie cutter good looking guy? This role needs an actor of depth, but also charisma (for Bruce), who has a a fan following that will flock to see him be dashing and heroic in a tux or a bat suit. KERMIT THE FROG IS BATMAN. Oh yeah, and opposite him you all know the Scarecrow role was tailor made for Gonzo!

    Charisma vacuum

    by Il Baroni

I can't quite decide who would be the best pick for the dark Knight, but I do know it ain't Bale. Not only is his acting wooden, but he is a charisma vacuum. Give it to Jackson, I have a sneaking suspicion that he could pull it off, but the film will be garbage anyway simply because Warner's just don't know how to make super hero movies.

I don't think anyone here really has anything against Pacey, but he just can't pull off the dark brooding image. It'll be George Clooney all over again. I like George Clooney a lot, everyone here has some level of respect for him, but he was a terrible choice for Batman. I don't see anyone on this list that i'm really all that hard up to see as Batman. So long as Gyllenhal doesn't get the part, he can go cry his eyes out in his girlfriends supposedly wonderful chest(BURN!!!).

    by Halloween68

Just based on the physical look and the dual personalities that Batman/Bruce Wayne would have to pull off... I think Heath Ledger would actually make a pretty decent Batman. And although I like his work American Psycho and Reign of Fire, the No. 2 guy up there might look great as Batman, but I don't know if he could pull of the personality of Bruce Wayne. He looks like a clown when he grins. And he has a pompous look about him. ('Why he was perfect for American Psycho.) I think he'd make a better beefed up Joker. Heh, heh.

I'm not on a bandwagon here. Any choice other than Bale is insane. His being from the U.K. shouldn't matter in the least- he's simply the best guy for the role. This is particularly evident in AMERICAN PSYCHO and EQUILIBRIUM. I can't some mufuhs are saying "Oh, those movie never made any money!" And...? Keaton had a boomin' career when he got the role of Batman, yo. Beefcake photo aside, it isn't just his appearance, he can pull off the attitude, and best of all he'd be believable in the action. No Bubble Boy, no Pacey, only BALE. If you can't see it, you just don't know.

Hi, I'm formerly VanCityViper. I personally don't see Pacey as Batman myself, just turned off by the geeks who bitch about how he started on DC. People also didn't see how Hayden Christensen started on the Canadian show Higher Ground where he was sent to a camp for trouble youth for being sexually abused by his stepmom. The show sucked, sure but he was pretty good playing the tormented teen who nobody took serious (of his claims) and I'm sure thats how he got Anakin. I think the best choice for Batman would be me, the chicks love me.

  • Sept. 4, 2003, 2:53 p.m. CST

    It's gotta be Bale...

    by Grey19

That is if he agrees to it, let's face it superhero movies have something of a stigma attached to them that damages an actor's credibility in some people's eyes and many wouldn't want the job because of this. Also, he may be put off the role because they'll want to sign whoever gets the part for a series of sequels should this film hit it big and remember the whole Superman fiasco over sequels. I can't see Jake Gyllenhal as Batman, Spidey maybe but he doesn't have a Batman vibe about him I'm afraid. BTW Bale should not be the next Bond after Pierce hangs up the tux in a couple of films time, I'd much prefer Ewan McGregor to take on the role of my country's greatest spy.

  • I'm not the only genius here!

    Give Batman white contact lenses

    by LeoO

I've said it before; I'll say it again. No Batman movie will have the right look until they give the actor white contact lenses to cover his iris and pupil while in the cowl. Every comic book and cartoon has shown Bats with all-white, blank eyes, that's what makes him look so creepy and frightening, like a dark angel. Without that, with pink skin and colored eyes inside the eye holes, he looks like a doofus in a Batman costume, but not Batman, not quite pulling off the look for some reason. With it, he can still act, his facial expressions will change the shape of his eyelids, and therefore the white space inside, as he shows surprise, fear, anger, etc. They also need to use dark makeup on his eyelids and the immediate area around, so his skin inside the cowl's eyeholes matches the color of the cowl. All this is ESSENTIAL. Now if they want they can be realistic, showing Batman removing or putting on this stuff. It can even be fast, showing Wayne putting his face against what looks like a pair of binoculars, and ending up with the contacts and makeup on a second or two later. Or they can leave the transition to that look unexplained. Either way it HAS to be done.

    Jim Carrey as Joker

    by LeoO

They should never have picked old, bloated, Jack Nicholson as the Joker. He didn't look like him, didn't act like him. The Joker is slim, fast, physically dangerous. Carrey would have been perfect, as we got a glimpse of when he played the Riddler, and even more in The Mask. And all the actors who played Batman sucked, especially the charisma-less, unimposing, "couldn't be a playboy or frightening in an alley in a million years" Michael Keaton.

  • Sept. 4, 2003, 3:15 p.m. CST

    Cillian Murphy

    by Jack Sparrow

I think he could pull off Batman better than any of the other actors listed. He has amazing screen prescence in Intermission, the best irish film in years, and holds his own against a brilliant Colin Farrell.Batman should not be too bulky so if he puts on a few pounds he'll be fine. His talent is unquestionable and everyone should see Disco Pigs,he eats up the screen as a wonderfully malicious character. Trust me he'd do it better than Bale who's been in a few disasters of late. Cast him now!!

    Whimpy Batman?

    by thatssass

With people like Joshua Jackson and Jake Gyllenhaal it looks like they're trying to go for that Tobey Maguire-esque look. Give me a break, people! That's all we need to do - turn Batman into some whimpy young adult with self esteem issues. Out of all of those people, Christian Bale is definitely the best choice.

This is the gayest thing I've ever seen on AICN

    by numberface

Gyllenhall and Bale would be wasting their time and talents playing a role which requires no acting ability. Michael Keaton sleepwalked (slepwalked?) through the role and came out smelling like a rose. A sock puppet could play Batman. The onyl thing that's interesting in Batman movies are the bad guys. You wanna make a good Batman movie. Have him played as the psycho vigilante that he is. Otherwise, I'm stayin' home and watching Deathwish IV.

Does it smell in here? Cuz Bale's the shit!

    by Devil'sOwn

Look, this is a character a lot of us care about- so much so that we make the sacrifice of allowing ourselves to look stupid, mispelling words in our zeal. What counts is that whoever they cast, they have the right resemblance, demeanor, and physicality to play Bruce Wayne/ Batman (and it goes without saying that they give Bats significant screentime, he's the fucking hero, not some monster in a horror flick). C'mon, this isn't the 80s- early-90s anymore. There is no excuse. And while we're at it, I know this is superficial, but could they please give this film a damn decent score/ soundtrack? Not some melodramatic product of a popstar's monstous ego. THE CROW featured a soundtrack that actually enhanced the movie. If Elfman's not doing the score, then it should be by the majestic Graeme Revell, the moody Don Davis, or the kinetic Jerry Goldsmith.

    WHITE EYES

    by TomVee

I applaud the TBer's idea of putting white contacts in the eyes of the next Batman. But how do you hide the fact that the area around his eyes is caked with black makeup? It is embarrassingly easy to spot in each of the four Batman movies, and serves to destroy the illusion of a costumed super hero. Also, nothing has been done in the four movies to fix up the costume's lack of head-turning capability, since the cowl is stiff and severely limits the actor's head movements. In real life, in the first 2 minutes of his first outing, Batman would have been shot in the head from either the side or from behind.

Another quarter heard from... Hey, y'all, betcha didn't know James Lipton AKA Numbface is in our midst. A lot of people would consider BATMAN Keaton's finest work, dude. Yup. Bale and Bubble Boy's talents are being put to better use doing.... what? Everyone knows the "risks" associated with playing a comic book character, but occasionally they're worth it because they give us moments unlike those in any other movie. Enjoy the cinematic greatness that is "Death Wish IV".

    by Randalgraves2002

Is it just me, or have the brothers Warner completely flipped their lids? I mean, this list of shit actors they've got is just a bunch of Hollywood trash. Why not try good, bulky actors who actually look the part, and not just people who are on the current Hollywood IT LIST??? Oh, and the only reason the villains are the best part of the Batman movies is that the film makers always chose to focus on them.Let's try for a Batman movie that actually stars Batman.

    Eion Bailey --- Great Actor

    by SkinneeJ

Must say this guy was very good in Band of Brothers and also in his small part of Fight Club. Would probably make a good Batman, his character was pretty dark and moody in BoB so I think he could pull it off. He would be a breath of fresh air after George Clooney. I would also say Bale would be great as well. I would imagine that Warner would go with him before Bailey for the name recognition, which is fine by me.

Ed Harris *is* the aging Dark Knight of franchise-resurrecting comic. Why hadn't I thought of that before? And thinking of things I haven't thought to think about, I think we're ready for an older superhero. We, the viewing public, have had origin stories out the wazoo lately. Frankly, we're beginning to tire of the whole "costumed avenger movie" thing. It's time to go postmodern and do a "Dark Knight Returns." At least, it'd hold us over until "Blade III," which Harry assures me will be positively fellatic.

Careful with that Eddie Murphy stuff...

    by KingOfTheFools

I remember a time when a rumor was floating around regarding Chris Rock playing Robin. So WB might just get a wild hair up their ass and cast Daddy Day Care as the Caped Cruisader. Also, while we're at it...in regards to the white eyes...Alex Ross said he'd never paint Batman with just white eyes cause if Batman were real you'd be able to see his eyes in the mask. I think it has something to do with intimidation thru the use of the eyes. Don't know if that helped or not. Anyway, thank you for your time.

    Get off Joshua Jackson's case!

    by The_Thin_Man

Okay, the guy's not really Batman material, but then are you seriously trying to say that Bale IS? Has anybody even SEEN "Equilibrium"? I could just imagine him or Guy Pearce ending up as the Val Kilmer of the next Batman movie series (Tobey Maguire and his death's-rictus grin would probably count as the Clooney option). And in defence of Joshua Jackson: he was the best thing by far in "Urban Legend" (what a HUGE honour that is!) and HE should have been the killer, instead of it turning out to be the most BORING CHARACTER IN THE WHOLE DARN FILM. Glad I got that one off my chest. PS: Vin Diesel to play Batman? Van Damme to play Batman? Steven Siegal to play Batman? And who gives a damn anyway, does anybody REALLY have any expectations of it being any good? Sam "Spiderman" Raimi and Ang "Hulk" Lee have proved what a mess a straight director can make of an action film. Who REALLY thinks that Christopher Nolan can do any better? And isn't the whole Batman thing just one big capitalists' wet dream anyway (the billionaire uses his fortune to don a wetsuit and fight crime - can you imagine Bill Gates in that role?) A dream that was pretty much expended in the two Michael Keaton films? Most of all, WHY IS ANYBODY BOTHERED? GIVE US SOME ORIGINAL DAMN FILMS INSTEAD OF CRAP SEQUELS TO CRAP ORIGINALS!!!!

    Bale should be 007

    by cmsapp

Not fucking Batman. He is too old to play a young Bats. Cillian Murphy is the flavor of the month who played a character who is nothing like Wayne/Batman. And he's skinny as a stick. Gyllenhaal? Please. Another flavor of the month who really hasn't done shit. It should be Josh Jackson. He can play messed up characters, still unknown to the average joe, is over six feet tall, is young and looks young, has a descent physique and used to play hockey. He has the most qualities of the list to play a Young Batman. Cillian might could be a good Scarecrow or Joker...

    Gyllenhaal as Batman

    by GemmaMovies

I've been watching the casting rumors about Batman for a while and my vote (as if it matters) is for Jake Gyllenhaal. As a Alan Moore fan, if the WB is going to make a Batman movie where Batman is younger, who better to play Batman than an American actor like Jake Gyllenhaal? He's the right build. He played moody in 'Donnie Darko' and slightly crazy in his other indie films. Batman is supposed to be dark and bitter as a vigilante! Check out Jake's movies - this guy can act and he's not a run of the mill pretty boy. LEt Bale have Bond. I think the Brits would have a sh*tfit if they cast an American as Bond so why cast a Brit as Batman?

  • Sept. 9, 2003, 3:21 p.m. CST

    Dark, Darker, The Dark Knight

    by Dodgerdog

Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in DONNIE DARKO was practically like a rehearsal for Batman. Dark, moody, drugged out and seeing a therapist about his dual personalities. Is he seeing things? Giant rabbits? Or maybe a bat? Jake would be great to re-energize this tired old franchise. Pick an unknown or lesser-known who can act. With that list, I'd go for Jake Gyllenhaal because his indie films show that he's always interesting to see on screen. Since he almost got SPIDERMAN 2, the rumors about him working out sound like the studios like him. And his indie work means that serious movie fans might come back to see what he can do with the role of a schizo vigilante.

  • Sept. 11, 2003, 11:49 a.m. CST

For God's sake give it to Jake!

    by Ingrid182

Jake will be able to pull off this role. He puts so much into his acting, and since this movie is about a young Batman, he wouldn't be exactly like the older 30-40 year old Bruce Wayne would he? His personality would be different. So Jake would be perfect playing the young, troubled Bruce Wayne.
