THE WIRE Season Finale!!

Published at:  Aug 24, 2003 6:28:56 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Hey look at this! Season two turned out to be better than season one!

Ziggy Sobotka’s getting reamed by his fellow inmates. Thanks to Beatie Russell, Frank Sobotka decided to turn on the Greeks. And thanks to that traitorous fuck in DOJ, the Greeks know it.

And how great was it that Brother Mouzone (“Little bow-tie wearin’ motherfucker from NYC”) was spared? What now will become of brother Omar?

9:30 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

(BTW, "The Wire" has been renewed for a third season. And “Carnivale,” HBO’s first Sunday-night sci-fi series - the one overseen by “Deep Space Nine” vet Ron Moore) - kicks off three weeks from tonight.)

    by waynesworld

does frank sobotka get whacked by the greek? does nick turn himself in and then give up vondas and the greek? does the murder of the 14 girls go unsolved? does ziggy survive in the slam? what about omar letting brother mouzone live? does stringer bell get found out by avon? does prop joe continue to sit on the sidelines? does daniels get his murders for rawls and bail himself out of trouble now that valcheck got what he wanted from the feds? does mcnulty get to stay if the murders don't get solved? or even if they do get solved? what about prez? does he get back into the swing of things or is he in hot water still for smacking valcheck? .... or does the cops entire world go to shit again because they let frank sobotka, who was ready to spill his guts on everything, leave only to come back in 24 hours with a lawyer? what a show.... big night tonight...

    Weak Finale

    by vnhaln1

I thought tonight's "season finale" went out with more of a wimper then a bang. Aside from clearing the 14 homicides and finding out what happened to Frank Sabotka the rest of the major story lines didn't get resolved. Quite frankly I was expecting more.

    What...

    by fnordknt

The rest of the major story lines? Didn't you watch last years season finale...The world just keeps on Spinning...

Bad Guys get away, Really Bad Guys just keep on slingin'. And Brother Moves On needs his own series...This isn't a normal show with normal pacing, through the middle, or the finale...What did you want a huge shot out and half of both sides die and it ends? With next season acting like those that died were never their...And those in prison are not in "Play"

    This show ROCKS...

Anyone who hasn't watched this show should tune in the moment HBO starts re-airing. It is really the best showed I have watched in a damn long time. Season Two was as amazing as Season One of the Sopranos. The Finale had the perfect amount of closure mixed with frustration (which is what real cops deal with, little to no closue on cases) and I can't wait to see how Seaon Three plays out. Thanks The Wire. I'll miss you.

    by fnordknt

I love this show so much, that I actually read that long ass post...And I agree with it...Plus I don't miss Buffy at all, don't even watch the syndication anymore...THE WIRE needs way more respect than it gets, people shoule be having WIRE(D) parties, and have huge ass pinup boards with .bmp's of all the players and how they fit together...Their should be books and Comics, online petitions for more ep's, RPG's, Conventions dedicated to this master piece...

All because that scene with dead frank staring into the camera freaked me out more than anything else in any medium...This show is filled with moments like that...

Plus Seriosly Give Brother Moves On his own series...

  • "The Wire" is certainly one of the best shows currently on television. In fact, "The Wire", along with "The Sopranos", "The West Wing", "The Shield", "Six Feet Under", "24" and "Smallville" are pretty much the only reasons why I still bother watching television. I won't say it's the best crime drama, only because I think that "The Shield" and "The Sopranos" are equally as good (multilayered storylines, great casts, surprising twists and turns and the ability to show realism even when some viewers would rather watch weekly shoot-em-ups with nice tidy endings). Having said that, let me say that the every single cast member of The Wire is nothing short of spectacular, and while I don't think that season two was better than season one, I did feel that they were both equally brilliant (with regard to writing quality, acting ability and directorial choices). I feel that many questions were left unanswered by the season ender and I was a bit frustrated by certain events. (curse the Greek! and curse the fact that he isn't even Greek!!) This, in my opinion is a good thing, because it means that the writers are telling a realistic, compelling story without resorting to 'dumbing-down' plot points and spoon-feeding their audience. I, for one, appreciate the fact that they (unlike so many other television writers), are respecting our collective viewing intelligence instead of insulting it. And speaking of intelligence... from season one my favorite character has always been Stringer B. (although I have to say that Omar does come in a very close second). Idris Elba's Stringer B. is an intense, intelligent, brooding, dangerously ruthless manipulator who ranks up with the most well-rounded, compelling characters ever written for the small or large screen. He is loyal to a fault, until his instinctual intelligence makes it obvious that Avon's shortsighted manner may well lead their entire organization to ruin. Unfortunately, Stringer seems to be playing a very dangerous game of 'all(!)-sides against the middle' and seems destined not to survive season three for the following reasons... 1.) Avon may finally be getting wise to the fact that Stringer might be manipulating events in order to allow him to run the organization as he sees fit (watch the way Avon reacts toward Stringer in their final scene together this season and you'll see what I mean... although that's not too swift on Avon's part because if Stringer suspects that Avon's getting wise... well let's just say that Avon is pretty vulnerable in his present situation... for the time being he would be smart to keep his suspicions to himself). 2.) Avon's sister strikes me as a potentially dangerous woman, who I believe would stop at nothing if she were to ever discover that Stringer ordered the murder of her son. 3.) The rival drug dealer (sorry, forgot his name), who Stringer is in bed with, would turn him out in two seconds if an advantageous situation were to present itself. 4.) Brother M. is also intelligent, (knowing that more than one person was involved in his assassination attempt), and his cold reaction to Stringer in the hospital certainly suggests that Stringer might have more than just a bit to worry about. 5.) Omar is just beginning to realize that he was physically and emotionally set up by Stringer (who used the death of his lover to do so!) and Omar is not someone who is likely to forgive, forget or shy away from a blood-soaked vendetta (especially one aimed at an organization which he's already technically at war with)... or to put it another way, Omar's philosophy of enemy attack was expressed quite nicely last season with the quote "You come at the king... you best not miss." It is for all of these reasons that I fear that my favorite character may not be back for a fourth season. (quick different subject... anyone interested in seeing Idris Elba in an amazingly cool British sci-fi horror program "Ultraviolet" should pick up the Region 1 DVD. It contains all 6 episodes and was England's answer to "The X-Files". You will not be sorry. The storyline is great.).

    finally

    by alanna banana

It's fantastic to finally have a talkback for The Wire. I've been watching all season without anyone to discuss it with. This show is cursed with being critically acclaimed but incredibly underwatched, so I'm psyched to see it will be back for a third season. And yeah I read those long ass posts too because I'm so damned starved for Wire interaction. Right on.

    by zocalohobo

Not a bad ending to the season, lots of loose ends remaining...The question I have is....How the hell can The Wire get no Emmy nominations and yet Sex in the City gets 13??? Anyhoo, Lets hope they go back to the 'hood next year. Avon should be getting outta jail soon and he's gonna start a war with Prop Joe...

We finally get a talkback, and the damn season is over...the BEST show on TV, right up there with the Sopranos...the Avon-Stringer thing is gonna be GREAT next year, with Avon's deal, he'll be out of prison in 6 months, which means he'll be out in time for the premere...what will be "The Wire" for next season though, we saw drugs, then corruption, now???...maybe something white collar, that's tied into drugs, 'cause it's all about the drugs....

Whats great is the fact that The Wire is renewed for another season so all these dangling plotlines will hopefully feature prominently in the next season, which couldnt come any sooner.

David Simon, creator of The Wire says it best....

    by portnoy

David Simon, creator of The Wire says it best: "We are not selling hope, or audience gratification, or cheap victories with this show. The Wire is making an argument about what institutions - bureaucracies, criminal enterprises, the cultures of addiction, raw capitalism even - do to individuals. It is not designed purely as an entertainment. It is, I'm afraid, a somewhat angry show."

    The Wire is awesome

    by da_mp

I never, ever, ever, ever talkback. But when an awesome show like this is being discussed I have to chime in. Where do I begin? Acting, Storytelling, Directing, all excellent. After watching Season One it was the little things that hooked me. The "day in the life" of individual characters at the begining of each episode (two come to mind from last year, McNulty and Bunk investigating a murder and comunicating w/ only the word Fuck, Wallace's brief life as the care taker of the kids in his surroundings). The individual quotes from characters. The Shooting of Kima. Awesome stuff. This season grabed me, by bringing EVERYONE back from season 1, I mean for those who saw season 1 wasn't it awesome seeing minor characters pop up now and again. From Bubbles to Freemon's Girlfriend it was definitely a joy. I'm sorry they killed off Avon's nephew (what was his name?) Because he really represented what the show was all about. The bad guys weren't all bad and the good guys weren't all good, it was the grey areas that the drug dealers and cops operated in. AWESOME show. Can't wait until next season

    The Wire is Fantastic

    by macflecknoe

The second season was hands-down the best reason to own a television this summer. I couldn't wait for Sunday night to get here, and hated having to wait a whole 'nother week as soon as it ended. For me, and I'm probably in the minority, the only sour note to the season was Brother Moves On. He seems like a cartoon character among all these amazingly realistic personalities. His performance is great, but his dialogue and affectations just ring untrue and "made up." That said, I love the show and can't wait for season three.

One person was missing from season 2.

    by clutchbrake

Yup, everyone from season 1 seemed to make an appearance except for one person. Who? Detective Leander Sydnor. He was the undercover cop Bubs led around.
I don't recall him being mentioned at all in season 2. Kinda strange because he was good police. Maybe they will bring him back next season since Herc and Carver are obviously going to screw up.

Excellent talkback. It is good to hear from other Wire fans.

    Brother Mouzone (Moves On)

    by macflecknoe

Yes, I was talking about the little bow-tie wearing motherfucker. I believe Brother Moves On is his nickname, at least when Stringer and Prop Joe were talking about him, but I could be wrong. Anyway, he's the only character I felt belongs more in PULP FICTION and less in the world of THE WIRE, where everything is real without being hyper-real.

now this site gets off its lazy ass to support and recognize anything that isn't KILL BILL, BUFFY, or MONK? The Wire is the cop show to watch and you need to start showing a lot more love when SEASON 3 gears up - lets hope they go after what the writers have really been poking at in the shadows of Baltimore: the politicians.

    It's about time...

    by blahblahface

that there is a talkback for the best show on TV today. AICN has The Shield Talkbacks all the time, and that show will never come close to the quality of The Wire. Thank god HBO renewed it. Maybe Herc will throw some coverage S3's way, and turn some folks on to what is undoubtedly the richest and most rewarding program currently on the tube.
