Two More Readers Slice Into KILL BILL VOLUME ONE!!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Okay... I’ve gotten these two new reactions in from the Cambridge screening (not Boston, as was pointed out to me in a number of e-mails), but I’m not sure what to make of them. There seems to be some conflict between some of what they describe and what the guy Harry posted yesterday described. Still, this should give you some idea of the range of reactions we may be seeing as more people lay eyes on this one.
Moriarty,
I originally wasn't going to bother to post, seeing as how surely everyone else in the theater was going to run home and do it. However, since only two other people have bothered to write in so far, I decided to toss in my two cents.
I am not going to bother comparing Kill Bill to previous Tarantino films. You could write pages about how some aspect of the film was done better in one of his previous works. Having said that, here is what i have to say:
Kill Bill is a movie about one thing, revenge. While the plot is fairly simple, the story itself is not. From the very beginning we follow Thurman's character on her journey to kill those who were responsible for destroying her life. The film doesn't start the audience off at the beginning but instead jumps right in. There is no handholding narration, and there is no awkward dialogue where characters suddenly feel the need to talk about everything little detail that happened since they last met. As Thurman's character progresses in her quest to kill bill, we are introduced to many characters. Some of which, like Lucy Liu's character, get an entire origin sequence and others, like Vivica Fox's character, only come out in some of the details of the setting and the dialogue. For Liu's origin sequence the film even switches to animation, and it is incredible. It is graphic, expressive, and flows entirely with the movie.
As the movie progresses, the chapter style format takes us forward and then back then forward once again. Because we are told so little from the start, it is nice to know at any point the movie could can go back and pick up a few more details. For each encounter that Thurman's character has, a few more details about Bill or her past come to light.
The movie itself felt a little short, and not just in the sense that I wanted to see the second half. But that the second film will either have to be 3 hours long, or a lot of the characters that have yet to be introduced won't get a lot of attention.
On the surface, the movie is certainly to be labeled a kung-fu flick. However, there are really only a few fights scenes in the movie, a couple early on, and a really big one towards the end. You could probably break the last one into several smaller ones, but for the most the movie feels fairly balanced. But if you want to have a movie forced fed to you, you won't get it. Almost every scene is beatiful, and much of the movie is in the acting, not the action. And i was grateful that they reshot the scene from the trailer where Liu and Thurman exchanged words to make it seem less forced.
Overall I think the movie is superb, and if it is any indication of what Tarantino is still capable of producing Miramax should let him make whatever he damn well pleases.
call me zjbeuysOkay. You’re zjbeuys.
This next guy describes something about the ending of the film that doesn’t jibe with what an earlier report said. He may have been a wee bit distracted, though, for reasons I had to delete to protect his identity, so maybe he made a logical jump that is inaccurate. I’m still trying to sort this one out...
Just wanted to drop you a line about the KILL BILL VOLUME 1 screening last night. I'm [info deleted to protect his identity], and I got to catch most of the movie. First of all, the second review you ran (from
MC MC or something) sounds like fresh bullshit. There is plenty of dialogue and plenty of plot. It's just that this time (as opposed to PULP FICTION) most of everything is straightforward and doesn't include as many characters stories. But that doesn't mean that it's "simple."
Secondly, comparing this to the original MATRIX movie is silly. All of the action scenes in this film are centered on revenge, and there aren't "too many." There are only about four. That's par for the course for a 90 min movie. Everything is motivated, even the “bad guys” have motivations, which makes all of the fight scenes crucial to the story as well as entertaining to watch (and we’re talking BEAUTIFULLY shot….this could be the best shot action movie
ever…and don’t even BRING UP the over-directed MATRIX).
Finally, (SPOILER) to say that THE BRIDE'S ass isn't "kicked hard enough" in part one to make you believe she won't come back in part two is an idiotic statement. The way this movie ends is a much better
cliffhanger than that awful MATRIX REVOLUTIONS ending, which leaves you with nothing but questions. Yes, we know THE BRIDE will be back...but how the HELL is she going to get out of that grave??? It's a perfect
place to end the movie leading up to VOLUME 2. Tarantino keeps people wondering, keeps people wanting more.
I had more fun watching this screening last night than I did at the movies in a long time. Is this flick as substantial as PULP FICTION, JACKIE BROWN and RESERVOIR DOGS? No, but it's a helluva good time, and
a great action movie, which is something we haven't seen in ages. Recommended.
(sorry if I come off as hating the MATRIX flicks, but people keep comparing KILL BILL with these movies, and while I mildly enjoy the MATRIX flicks, this film is in a league of it’s own, and isn’t trying to be anything it’s not….i.e., it really IS a fantastic action kung-fu samurai movie, not a faux intellectual noodle cooker). Thanks.
If you use this, call me PARKER. So… already we see that KILL BILL is going to be a new player in the Franchise Wars that drive me so freakin’ crazy. Inevitably, something has to be torn down for something else to be built up, it seems, with people less and less able these days to simply discuss a film and its merits as an individual film, apart from comparisons.
Can’t wait to judge for m’self.
"Moriarty" out.

My crap detector is on for the last reviewer. All of the other Kill Bill reviews have been consistent. I am very excited about this motherfucker- QT is the shit..
On a side note, AICN is starting to piss me off with this anti-Matrix backlash. Moraity knows full and goddamn well that the last reviewer is a goddamn fake. It is obvious that he didn't even see the damn movie...he just wanted to shit on the Matrix. I mean, his review doesn't even jive with the other Kill Bill reviews.
-
A movie about single-minded revenge starring Uma Thurman and directed by Tarantino? I'm freakin' there. I can't wait for the asskickings, even if it is divided into two movies.
-
I'd just like to comment on your statement, "Moriarty, Reloaded sucked and you know it." Uhh...MrSmith, that's a fairly dumbass thing to say, considering the fact that it's your personal opinion. Everyone who writes in here is expressing an opinion, not a fact. Would you flame me by saying something like, "Mafu, Phantom Menace ruled and you know it"? The premise for this argument is juvenile and self-centered without realizing it's juvenile and self-centered. I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm just saying, for the sake of better debate, that you could have expressed this view as, "Moriarty, I believe Reloaded sucked, and I think - deep down - you agree with me." There you go.
-
And Kill Bill ain't a franchise, unless there's something I've completely missed. It's a movie in two parts. Surely franchises are generally films with the potential for a (well-nigh endless in some cases *cough*star trek*cough*) series of sequels. A second part doesn't make it a franchise in my book, so let's not start those flame wars. And I will be stealing that line about "mildly bopping" where it should have rocked for personal use, raw-bean. Nice one. Although I reserve judgment on Reloaded until I've had a chance to see it a couple more times, and fit it in with revolutions. I think it may end up like Back to the Future II - kinda sucky on its own, but it makes sense if you watch all three in a row.

"Jackie Brown" is not at the same level as "Pulp" or "Dogs"
by human tornado
No it's not. It's a better movie, actually. More refined, more mature, not your average Tarantino pop fest (wich I also love dearly), but one hell of a movie.

I can't wait to see Kill Bill. I'm hoping that Vol. 2 is released a month later, any longer would piss me off. I mean I'm alreay having to pay TWICE to see the entire fucking movie...which I'm willing to do...just don't fucking take too long. I just bought Jackie Brown on DVD about a month ago. The first time I saw it in theaters I fucking hated it. The second time I saw it, it wasn't too bad. When I saw it the third time, now on DVD, I absolutely loved it!! It's probably Quentin's best, but I'm still more apt to pick Dogs as my favorite Tarantino flick (best out of four...that's not enough...someone light a fire under QT's ass and make him do "Inglorious Bastards" and "The Vega Bros." ASA-fucking-P!!). But knocking Jackie Brown, I could see happen. As for the Matrix...well...the denouement better pay off or I'm shoving my McFarlane Neo figure up Larry Wachowski's asshole.

by shanghai nicky
Regardless, JACKIE BROWN is an excellent film, but I do wonder whether Tarantino fans big it up because it's the least obvious choice for his best work? C'mon, saying "PULP FICTION's his best" has no coolness/film connoisseurship factor whatsoever. IMO: PULP FICTION, followed by RESERVOIR DOGS, followed by JACKIE BROWN. Looking forward to KILL BILL.
-
Some of you on this talkbalk are simply too idiotic for words. Why would either review be a fake? Someone liked it, and someone didn't. Reviews are OPINIONS you fucktards. Also - if you're going to send in a review, don't ramble on for ten paragraphs about your fucking breakfast or your inconsequential day, then tell us in two sentences what you thought about the movie.
-
Uh oh, opinions following. I think "Pulp Fiction"'s his BEST movie, but I find I like to watch "Jackie Brown" more often. So I suppose that'd be my favorite of his. Sort of like how "Exile on Main St." is undoubtedly the Stones' masterpiece, but I'll usually throw on "Sticky Fingers" for a Stones fix. Hmmm, continuing this train of thought, "Reservoir Dogs" might be akin then to "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" (flesh out the metaphor yourself, I can't do ALL the work for you). Heh, holy crap, and now it's looking like "Kill Bill" could be QT's "Some Girls". Hee. This is fun.
-
Alright, here's the deal, initally some sites such as tarantino.info were reporting that the final length of Kill Bill was closer to five hours. The trades on the other hand said it was closer to three. An article by Jeffrey Wells (http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/elsewhere/93.html)claimed also that Kill Bill may indeed be longer than reported by the trades. Well reviews of Vol one are out and it's clear that the film is only an hour and a half. But like one reviewer said many of the characters were not introduced, and to do them justice vol 2 would have to be 3 hours. Well tarantino has gone on record with Cinescape caliming that both movies are "94 minutes each". Also in a German Rolling Stone article, (found at tarintino.info)when asked how many movies he would make from Kill Bill he responded with "I don

I assume you're talking about Brit Exland, cos I've never heard the expression "slate off." Bog off, yes. Sod off, Bugger off, Naff off, OK, Get the sodding hell out of here you buggering bastard, fantastic. You get the idea. We like Wanker as well. Hope that helps.
-
You twat. ;-)
-
"Santorum" is also called "Wolf Cookies" by some, but that's only if they are freeze dried for later snacking (I can't make this shit up). Also, I thought J Brown played better on the small screen (my TV) than in the movie theatre. Perspective and time are funny things. For example, I remember being scared shittless by Phantasm as a pre-tee, and recently, I played it for my nephews (13yrs and 9yrs) on a 52" inch screen TV with surround, late at night. My little bros did their best to ACT afraid, but I could tell that they were not feeling it (the youngest actually patted my hand with sympathy). - Off Subject - The thing I got from Matrix Reloded is this: Neo was able to not only do some amazing shit in VR, but he was also able to stop the Hunters by himself. Why? He is a machine. A machine who will disprove the pre-destination bullshit, who will break the cycle. Probably I'm full of shit.

...I Have been GEEKED for KILL BILL since the first trailer came out. There is NOTHING more American than a good revenge story, especially if it features Kung Fu. I don't care if it is FIVE movies,I'm gonna see all the motherfuckers!!!!!

Ong Bak is the greatest martial arts movie in the past 20 years. All bow down to Phanom Yeeram, star of Ong Bak. He is Jakie Chan and Bruce Lee combined.

the main weak point is the bruce willis story. imagine if pulp fiction was only about the hitmen. it would have been the greatest movie ever made. dont get it wrong i love quentins dialogue and the way he tells his stories but i think he still hasnt reached his potential. too many people are afraid to judge QT's movies. i ask that you really take a look at pulp fiction and QT's other movies. they all have scenes that are worthless. do i have any challengers?
p.s. i cant wait to see kill bill! -

by brimacombe

At least not on this site. Not from QTBF (Quentin Tarantino's Best Friends).
-
I believe the second review was written by someone who has not seen the official screener shown in Cambridge. As we all know, Vol.1 ends after the Showdown at the House of Blue Leaves, not during the grave scene, as was previously believed. I suppose most people who've read the screenplay would agree that the grave scene would be the best place possible for a cliffhanger ending. I suppose we'll all find out for sure on October 10th.
-
Slate off? Here we would say "Get your c***ing face out of my sight you tosspot". For me the reason QT's films work is because everything you always wanted see in a film happens e.g. the jive-talking hitmen, the fact Mr Pink empties a clip at the police to get away, Mr Blonde with the cup of soda, "Hmm lovely coffee", discussing a $5 shake etc.. Don't forget that before Dogs came out you didn't see witty talky stuff like that in mainstream films (it was all Bruce Willis in Die Hard and Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon), and because there wasn't as much of these ideas in Jackie Brown it m ade the film less blisteringly entertaining as Dogs and Pulp. Perhaps Kevin Smith would have not got such excellent talky films like Mallrats and Chasing Amy picked up without the huge success of QT's films not patronising the audience. Just watch the Kill Bill trailer again and tell me it's not the most mouth-watering thing you've seen in a dog's age / donkey's years / in a Preston Guild etc. (Brits and their slang, eh?)
-
One of my favorite scenes in Jackie Brown was when Sam Jackson was in the bail bonds office and asks Robert Forester if it was his idea to put that picture up on the wall (the one showing Forester and his black friend, Winston). FUCKING BRILLIANT! 2 seconds of dialogue and body language conveyed what many movies can't get across in 3 hours. Subtle, yet as powerful as a sledgehammer. The realistic conversations between Jackie and Forester, combined with the edginess and desperation of the other violent characters makes you care even more about the principals. I could go on and on, but if you didn't feel that when you saw it, nothing I say will change your mind.

Looks like tarantino has yet to create a dissapointing movie.
Oh and just for the record, The Matrix Reloaded FUCKING ROCKED! If it really did suck (which it doesn't) then there would be no need to constantly tell people that it sucked. It seems the only reason you keep bringing it up is to stop yourself from realizing that it is an awesome movie. -
I talked about some of that on another forum, so here is some reasoning one can conclude. The human body is kept in full stasis, so no energy is wasted on the human moving. The stasis pods are filled with splooge, which makes transmitting raw power fast and efficient. The brain only uses 30% of the body

Jackie Brown was good. There were some things in the movie that could have been explained better, such as the switch, but that's why I like QT movies that don't, yknow, hand feed you. They make you kind of think yourself and piece it together.
Or, there was a crappy explanation, but ANYways, the way all the characters go around acting like they know what they're doing is Jackie Brown's charm in my opinion. I find that alot of females I know like it because the main character has that attitude and power through it that they look up to. And to tell the truth, I even liked it before I even knew QT's other work. If QT is going for static and 'mature' realism in that movie, it's ok that it's sorta boring and slow at parts. And now, for the exact opposite, some sort of dynamic surrealism. This movie looks like fuckin' fun. I also wanna see if Lucy Liu can act in her anti-Angel character. I also can't wait to see the Anime in trailers on TV, that will be such a mindfuck, like back when I was 11 watching Pulp Fiction trailers and hearing Miserlou for the first time. Yeah, BTW and I still like Jackie Brown. -
Jackie Brown will allways be the strangest movie experience i've had. I remember when i first finished Elmore Leonards book thinking to myself "this would be a great one for Quentin". Why did i think this ? well there are two "scenes" in the book that are so funny and off the wall that they had Quentins rythmn down to a tee. One is with a character totally dropped from the film, a nazi ( name eludes me ) gunrunner. If you remember Melanie from the film ( Bridget Fonda ) she ends up gunning down this nazi psycho and some sidekicks. It's brilliant and funny and adds depth to her character ( it also shows another side to SLJs character ). Then we have the bazooka scene, which is a classic. Robbie hires some empty headed gang bangers ( also dropped from the film ) who when cornered by the cops end up blowing themselves to pieces while struggling to read instructions on a bazooka. Brilliant witty stuff.
Now why did Quentin leave this "choice" material out. It baffles me. I can't see how it would slow the movies pacing down cause both scenes are short, yet the characters ( nazi, gangbangers ) add so much depth to the story. The shooting of Melanie has no impact in QT's cut, and it's mainly due to you never seeing her gun the nazi down. If it had been included you would have understood more why SLJ got so pissed with Deniro ( melanie had saved his ass ).
Both of these "scenes" ARE violent which can be the only explanation why they where left out, QT simply wanted to make a TV movie ( which is what Jackie Brown became ). Since JB i lost some if not most of my anticipation for any of QT's future movies. After all he does make movies for his OWN self amusement, but as Kyle from South Park so righly pointed out movies become ingrained on the public and are owned by US the public.
If directors feel a need to make movies for themselves then let them pour thier own money into them instead of relying on us to allow them to make more self indulgent movies.
