The first full on KILL BILL VOL 1 Review!

Published at:  Aug 12, 2003 1:47:30 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here... What we have here is some serious spoiler looks at KILL BILL VOL 1. Now, the thing about KILL BILL spoilers is this... the script has been floating around online for about a year now, so spoiler junkies have pretty much the entire damn thing in their noggins, and frankly - I'm of the opinion that the only thing that will ruin this film for anyone is pretension that one may bring into the theater with them. Having said that, the first review that Moriarty posted gets critical regarding the "little plot" and "little dialogue" in Volume One, even while complementing the action, style and look of the film. He doesn't criticize the acting or the dialogue that is there or the plot that is there, only that he wanted more. Well, this is what I'm afraid is going to happen with KILL BILL VOL. 1 and VOL. 2. The first film is a shot of pure adrenaline. The second - based on the script - is emotionally a far more brutal film. That second film is where the best moments between characters come, the twists and the hardcore emotional content. I'm afraid that there will be an issue of people that love Quentin previous films being a bit let down by the lack of his trademark work, in favor of his evolved action stylings and spectacle and dismiss the second part. Meanwhile the hardcore action geeks will fall 7 ways to Sunday in love with the first part and be ungodly pumped for the second which they'll believe to be even more hardcore, only to discover this emotional flick that... well takes them on a journey they most likely won't be expecting. We'll see how this plays out, but from these two reviews, I'd say... KILL BILL VOL 1 fucking delivers in spades and dude... October has never seemed this far away from August before!

OK, Harry, here's how it went down.

About a week ago, my girlfriend went to see Pirates of the Carribean at the Boston Common theater when a Miramax rep asked if she'd be interested in going to a test screening for an upcoming Miramax release. Knowing her boy to be a movie geek, she asked what it was for.

"Quentin Tarantino's next film, 'Kill Bill'"

Fast forward to last night. We got to the Landmark Theater in Kendall Square about an hour before they were letting people in and hung out with the crowd. They were screening it for men and women ages 18-39. We all filled out the obligatory card saying we weren't associated with the film industry, and that we wouldn't review it either in print or online. I'm going to break what I agreed to for this simple reason: People need to know now how much "Kill Bill: Volume One" will stick two fingers in their ass and fucking rock them in October.

At 7:30, the man himself, Quentin Tarantino, greeted with wall-shaking applause and sporting a Battle Royale t-shirt, addressed the crowd. He said that since this cut was made, he's done a few more cuts and he's happy with how it is now. He then sat, how fucking great is this, right near me in the fucking audience. Now, I gotsta warn you, this is one o' them spoiler reviews.

The flick opens with the "Shaw-Scope" logo of the great martial arts films of the 70s, backed up by, what sounds like, porn music.

Uma, in black and white, beaten and bloody, is staring past the camera. She looks in agony. A hand wipes blood off her face with a handkerchief with the name "Bill" on it. The voice of David Carradine is telling her shit about how he's sorry but she had this coming. "You must think me sadistic," he says. "Well, get ready to see me at my most sadistic." A gun is brought to her head. Before Uma can get her last dying words out BLAM. Shot with the brutality of a snuff film.

Now, in color, it's years later and Uma's at some suburban home. When Vivica A Fox answers the door, the music starts. Now, not just any music. As most of you already know, this movie is about Uma getting revenge against the members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (Darryl Hannah, Lucy Liu, Vivica A Fox, and Michael Madsen. And, of course, their leader, Bill) who beat and shot her and left her for dead. When Uma sets her eyes on one of these villains, this amazing, 70s wakka-cha-wakka via the synthesizers cranks up. RZA did the music for this, and godammit if his soundtrack didn't rattle my balls. With a brassy sound that would make James Brown come. I want this soundtrack the second it comes out so I can listen to it all day. The kinda music that puts a slide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

Anyhoo, a fight breaks out between the two. Now, despite the fact the Yuen Wo-Ping is credited as the Martial Arts Advisor in this film, do not expect "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." There is no beauty to the violence in this. It's as if Quentin realized that too many films joined the bandwagon of showing martial arts as this beautiful dance number and forgot that it also entails two or more trained warriors going at it with edged weapons. Brutal, brutal stuff. Thank god we all got to see it before the MPAA does the dirty things it does to it.

So, their fight ends when Vivica's young daughter comes home from school. They go into the kitchen for coffee and talk about when they did to Uma four years ago. Vivica, while pouring cereal for her daughter, takes a shot at Uma with a gun she concealed in the cereal box and Uma finishes her with a throwing knife. Unfortunately, her daughter witnesses this to which Uma says, "If you're still sore from this years from now, I'll be waiting." Uma leaves, hopping into her bright yellow tricked-out truck with the PUSSY WAGON painted on the back, and crosses Vivica's name (Copperhead) off a list. Already crossed out is "Cottonmouth".

We're then shown Texas, four years ago. The guy who played the sheriff in the opening scene from "From Dusk Til Dawn" is responding to to a mass homicide at a church, where Uma, along with a minister, some guests, and her future husband, are lying in pools of blood. Despite shot in the head, Uma lives on.

She's now comatose in a hospital, and Daryl Hannah is dispatched to off her. She wears an eyepatch and, as she disguises herself as a nurse, she puts on a white eyepatch with the Red Cross on it. Seconds from injecting her with poison, Bill calls to intervene. He feels it's dishonorable to kill her in her sleep. If she is ever to wake...that's a different story. However, being comatose ain't too good. An orderly is pimping her out at $75 bucks a fuck and you get the idea he's been doing it for a while now. Uma wakes up, and fucks up both the orderly/pimp and the john, and crawls out, taking the orderly's keys. This, my friends, is how she got Pussy Wagon.

One problem: entropy. Her legs ain't working. So as she sits in Pussy Wagon and tries to will her big toe to wiggle (Genius stuff), we are treated to the anime origin of Lucy Liu's character, "Cottonmouth". Quentin, after the screening, said it was done by the studio that did "Ghost in the Shell", though the style looks like a cross between "Blood: The Last Vampire" and "Aeon Flux". See, Lucy was the army brat daughter of a mixed race parentage. One Chinese, one japanese. When a Yakuza ganglord kills her mother and father with her in the room, she gets revenge and becomes the most feared assassin in Tokyo. End flashback, back to Uma trying to wiggle that toe.

So off to Okinawa for Uma as she meets Sonny Chiba. It's great to see Sonny Chiba (Last I saw him was the awe-inspiring Storm Riders, a great movie that my old scumbag manager at a video store got me into) back in a flick, and he's brilliant as a retired samurai swordsman, now running a restaurant with his friend. Uma persuades him to make her a sword, as she tells him it will be used to defeat an old pupil of his. Sonny knows she means Bill, and creates for her the greatest sword he's ever crafted. "If God stands in your way...than God shall be cut," he says. Now it's off to Tokyo, to deal with Lucy and her henchmen.

If the movie wasn't violent enough already, this is where it gets gruesome. In what felt like a thirty-minute fight, Uma takes on Lucy's Crazy 88 fighters, her bodyguard GoGo (the girl from Battle Royale with the fucked-up nose), and then about 50 more guys. This is the fight that's shown the most footage of in the trailer. Arms, feet, heads, hands...everything gets hacked off in this fight. This is the one that will give the MPAA a stroke. Now, I've seen some fucked up shit in my day, but this takes the cake. Arguably the most violent fight seen I've seen in a film, animated or live-action. Blood sprays, people scream in pain. No person gets stabbed or slashed and falls dead. Everyone feels what just happened to them. In one grotesquely comic bit, Lucy's assistant (played by Julie Dreyfus, a French actress who looks like the clone of Monica Bellucci and Kristen Davis) has her arm hacked off and continues, for the rest of the battle, to squirm around on the floor as blood gushes. This all culminates as Lucy and Uma go at it samurai style in a snow covered Japanese garden, where Lucy is scalped, and falls dead.

Kristen Bellucci-clone is tortured (Bye, Arm #2!), interrogated, and dropped off at a hospital by Uma. She is left alive to tell Bill what she told Uma. As Uma says, she want Bill to know what she knows. And she wants Bill to know that she knows what Bill knows she knows.

Cut to black. Volume one is over.

All in all, incredible film. Truly incredible. Not his best film, I gotta give that to "Reservoir Dogs", but without a doubt it's now my favorite movie of his. It has a level of violence not seen in cinemas in ages. A little light in the story department, but that's OK. It works for this. This is a movie you watch for the action and the Tarantino-cool, not for the story craftsmanship. After the screening, Quentin and RZA were shaking hands and thanking everyone who came by. He said Volume 1 is due for October, and Volume 2 in January. I told him that this movie taught me how to love again. I don't know what in the fuck that means, but I was too blown away by what I'd just seen to find a clever way to say "thank you" and "congratulations".

Cheers,

Peeshypunk

    This movie bites

    by amra2003

Go here: www.movie-page.com/movie_scripts.htm Read it and you'll see for yourself why this film is the product of timid studio executives lacking the balls to stand up to QT and say the guy's got no clothes as far as this script is concerned. It actually starts out as an exciting read; it drew me in and got me looking forward to what I thought *had* to be some pretty intriguing plot twists and character motivations. How could someone do what Bill does in the first 5 minutes? Did someone kill his whole family by lighting them on fire and pushing them out of an airplane into a volcano? How did this situation come about? But as I kept reading--and waiting--I quickly began to realize...there wasn't anything *there*. This is a *very* pedestrian revenge tale, dressed up with cliched kung-fu training flashbacks, endless and repetitive martial arts combat, and page after page after page of some of the most violent scenes in recent memory. Each scene consists of attempt after attempt to shock and bludgeon the audience into a numb stupor with ever-increasing violence. Reading this thing, I couldn't help imagining QT, this stunted adolescent, as he was grunting it out on paper squealing and rubbing his hands together, "Oooo--oooo, yeah, wait'll they see *this*, chopping these guys arms off, then swinging them like nun-chuks, yeah, my fan's will love it! Oh and when Lucy Liu decapitates this guy, it's gonna be *great*, yeah, I gotta get the geyser of blood shooting from his shoulder blades *just* right..." And the ending...good lord, has this guy ever gotten laid? His sense of emotional motivation for people seems mired in playground bravado and idealized notions of the jr. high crush. This thing reads like the ramblings of a 15 year old from Columbine. So why does Bill shoot Uma in the first place? "There are consequences to breaking the heart of a murdering bastard. You experienced some of them." Oh. Well thanks for clearing that up. Disaster of epic proportions. One can only hope this will keep the guy off the streets for a few *more* years.

But the reviewer didn't say anything about the way Uma looked fighting. From the trailer, it looked a little bit too choreographed and rehearsed. But she is awesome, so I expect QT to make it looks good.

I went through that phase, too, many years ago. You know the one. The phase where I want everyone else to develop spiritually to the same high level I occupy. The phase where I wished that everyone shared my same noble interest in the profound. The phase where I wanted to see art that plumbed the depths of human relationships in an honest, insightful, forthright manner. And you know what happened? I kept ON developing, and grew ALL THE WAY up, and realized that all of that crap doesn't add up to a pile of ant shit. Quentin Tarantino may as well send us gore-fest after gore-fest, because that's all there is. The rest - what you seem to prefer - has been dead for so long that it's starting to smell the place up. Let's just acknowledge it and move the fuck on. At least Tarantino isn't boring us with some insincere 'Ordinary People' knock off or some asinine movie about a fucking retard who learns how to tie his shoes.

  • It's interesting how Harry defends Kill Bill Volume 1 and says that it's more of a tease but Volume 2 is the pay off yet The Matrix Reloaded offers nearly the same thing as the "middle child" of a trilogy, flaws indeed but a "middle child" none the less. I don't understand how Harry can make concessions for perhaps the shortcomings of Kill Bill Volume 1 but crucify Reloaded for it's flaws. I'm a fan of Tarantino, I don't think he's the best director or writer I have ever seen but his films take risks and he does what he wants. I would equate The Matrix Reloaded as one of the biggest risks in modern action filmmaking. The Brothers Wachowski decided not to be conformists and deliver what the fans thought they would, they flipped the world of the Matrix [or what we knew of it] on it's head and said "fucking deal with it". Many people applauded, many went crying because, well, there were no vampires and werewolves. Harry J. Knowles is a hypocrite.

If ultra-violence is all this movie has to offer...

    by mikesal222

I won't be seeing it. Ultra-violence is fine if there's actually a story to back it up. But mindless violence for it's own sake has never appealed to me. It sounds like this movie is 3 hours of people hacking each other's limbs off. Not my idea of fun, but to each his own. I skipped Bad Boys 2 for the same reason -- too much mindless violence which takes the place of an actual plot and character development.
And there's no reason why this movie needs to be split in two. It sounds like this movie could easily be trimmed down to under 3 hours. The consensus is that many of the fight scenes go on for way too long. This is a cash grab, plain and simple.

Boston is the best city to hold test screenings, period.

    by stigmata

Boston --I'm skipping the hoo-ha and including Cambridge here-- boasts Slapshot, the Dropkick Murphys, the Harvard Film Archive, the Bruins (Cam Neely's retirement night is Jan. 12. BOO YA!), Brubaker Beer, Hollywood Express (R.I.P. Hollywood Express-o) and the greatest concentration of colleges and universities on_the_damn_planet, but more on this later. Also Sean Penn's "Terry Noonan" character from the truly glorious "State of Grace" was from Boston. Now, with all these students descending and thriving in this great city, fueling an infusion of creative thought and open minds doesn't it MAKE SENSE to hold screenings here? It's the same reason we get pre-Broadway theater and why every band on the planet makes it a point to come here: when a billion students see something they like, they spread the word to everyone back home. Marketers have known this for years. Why do you think there are far more Red Sox fans fans **who matter** than Yankee fans across this great country? Because all of the best and brightest take a piece of Boston with them when they leave. NOTE: Err, Richard Kelly, could you please follow Q.T.'s example and test "Knowing" here. Thanks.

There's this passage I've got memorized, Austin 3:16. It says, "If ya wanna see Stone Cold do improvisational dance on top of a moving Budweiser truck, give me a HELL YEAH!" I've been screaming that for years. And if you heard it, it meant you use public transportation. Never gave much thought to it, it was just something I said before I rattled a coffee cup full of change at you. I witnessed something today that made me reconsider... (some jackass's two-word review) So I'm thinking I'm the beer, you're the truck, and the t'backers are the evil men.

I've read the script (i'm one of those people who couldn't care less about spoilers because i go to a movie more to see a film than to be surprised or whatever) and it's not terrible, although there are moments when I was thinking "Tarantino wrote this?" with a hint of bitterness, overall it seems like it'll be enjoyable, and what's more... you get to watch a movie (or two) in which Uma Thurman kicks some serious ass. Do you really need to have more in a movie?

    by cbabbittrain

I have no idea why people are expecting Kill Bill to have the narrative of Pulp Fiction or say, Jackie Brown. We all know this is Quentin Tarantino's "grindhouse" blow your mind, shock the hell out of you, martial arts film. This is a film that wants to be a classic, brutal, & thrilling revenge epic. This is for people who love the genre. C'mon, Sonny Chiba and Gordon Liu are in this film. The Streetfighter and the Shaolin Master Killer. We all saw the trailer. I think it's pretty clear what Quentin is aiming for. This is not a film for critics. The only reviews that matter are the ones from Harry Knowles and Moriarty. This is a film for film geeks. Any review that complains about narrative shows that the reviewer has no clue what Quentin Taratino is doing with this film. The MPAA better not touch this thing!!! Can't wait for October!!!

For the record, Reservoir Dogs is not his best film. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not great. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are great, GREAT films!!! Pulp is a masterpiece, and Jackie Brown is just perfect cinema. This is a fact.

And yet you've proved my point with your "long live New Brunswick" rabble rousing. You had an experience in Boston, you've thought to relate it to another region and offered your opinion. What your actual opinion is is neither here nor there. I equate this to Mr. Orange ratting out Mr. Pink as the one who didn't throw in any tip money. For anyone who wants something a little bit more rough around the edges, or God forbid a little more hip, Boston is a fucking joke. I couldn't believe it when I went to Fenway park a couple of weeks ago and saw like two black people. Yeah, and Boston may have a lot of bars, but half of them close at 1 a.m.! Please! No mention on if we get to see Uma's pussy = we don't. Damn. Oh and that's pretty weird usage of the word "entropy". I guess he's trying to say her muscles have atrophied. Still the most pertinent fact remains - Scissorhands refuses to realise that 3 hour films (LOTR, Titanic) have made shitloads of money and so the film was split into two so Quentin wouldn't have to cut it. Screwing the consumer over as we will have to pay twice the price to see it. Fuck that, Mr. Weinstein, you have just ensured that I and many others will just download the film and watch it for free.

    Yes, Fluffyunbound, the movie bites

    by amra2003

Some people don't get it. OK, the movie's violent; so was Private Ryan. That's not the problem. One difference between, say, SPR and Kill Bill is SPR had a story and characters that we could care about and understand, and the violence had a context that made sense. KB is completely and deliberately over the top; it's just stupid. Every time there's a decapitation or bloody maiming of one of the dozens of chop-socky flunkies in this flick, I half-expect Uma/Lucy/Daryl/name-your-assassin to look into the camera and give a big "wasn't *that* cool?" wink to the infatuated fanboys in the audience. I never said the film was adolescent; the film's just stupid. QT is an adolescent, an example of arrested development who continually goes back to the same themes and structure in his films, not because its always worked, but because its all he knows. I don't have a quarrel with that necessarily; this film is obviously such an ego-driven mess, let him spend the money on whatever makes him happy. But don't mistake KB for a good film: there is no character development (you know no more about bill or uma at the end of the film than at the beginning), no character-changing arc for anybody, countless bloody violent meaningless deaths (other than to look "cool"), dime-store symbolic imagery (Uma facing off with Bill on a beach with swords, she in her wedding dress (WTF??) and Bill in his tux), cutesy gimmickry ("let's bleep out Uma's characters name for half the movie! Yeah, that's it!"), etc., etc....

Don't get me wrong, RD was derivative but riveting, Pulp Fiction was entertaining, Jackie Brown had its clever moments. But this film. Good grief.

I'm afraid you haven't struck a nerve at all. You are simply providing me with a forum to request as many advanced screenings in Boston that the studios will allow. Your exuberance for "City X" (read: any city other than the one I love) is as heated and as vanilla as such playground blurtings (yes "blurtings") as "My Dad can beat up your Dad." Also, this is not a skin color issue. This is a "I can't fucking believe I missed this Kill Bill-with-Q.T. screening and it happened in my own goddamn backyard but maybe I can get more" issue.

Funny how Harry is preaching caution and patience for Kill Bill not having a whole plot and then very immaturely crying about Matrix not having a plot. It seems like with every new post, Harry gets more hypocritical. I remember once when he tried to say he was not into politics.....funny. Harry is the biggest closet anti-establishment baby I have every seen. Tell me Harry, what was the point of the post of Hunter Thompson's interview?? How in any way was that current movie news? It is also notable for giving a grateful world Ben Affleck and Matt Damon (heeeyyyyy). My Take On QT

    by chicagoronin

In my opinion, Tarantino is what I'd call a "clever" filmmaker rather than a "smart" one. He's definitely got the skills to construct a scene, write memorable (sometimes hilarious) dialogue, and give us characters that hold our attention. He can, much better than a lot of his contemporaries, create films which produce a specific effect or illicit a specific emotional response (laughter, gross-out, etc.). What I generally find lacking in Tarantino's movies is any actual insight. Unlike some of his idols (Scorsese, Kubrick) his films don't delve deep into the psychology or backstory of his characters. The sole exception I find is "Reservoir Dogs" and all of that largely rests with the character of Mr. Orange (Tim Roth). Basically, Tarantino is a B-movie fan with a B-movie mentality. With the talents he had, he crafted what are arguably some of the best 1950s B-crime pictures that were never made ("Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction"). Unfortunately, some idiot critics (and fans) toasted hiim like he was Godard, and then he started believing the hype himself (which is when everyone then turned on him). Take QT for what he is - a B-filmmaker, but an exceedingly clever one. That said, I find all of his films (including "Jackie Brown") eminently watchable and entertaining on some level. I'm looking forward to "Kill Bill", and plan to take it for what it is.

    What's The Fuss?

    by myword

It's strange how "film geeks" tend to hold even the most outlandishly dumb plots in high esteem just because (a) it's directed by a "cult" favorite director or (b) because it is excessively violent or has the likes of Kevin Smith penning the script.

From what I've read so far on this new QT flick I'll say this much, it looks like a return to some good ol' gore. It sure as hell beats the "my choppers down but I'm okay" scenarios we witnessed in the dud that was The Hulk (Sorry AICN, you were completely wrong on this one stop promoting bullshit Marvel vehicles needlessly).

As far as plots go it's a return to the Charles Bronson Death Wish era or revenge flicks. I don't know Uma's characters reason for vengence but it sure doesn't seem as noble as Paul Kersey's motives. That will just kill with the masses.

Expect to see lines of "film geeks" and QT devotees adorn the streets when October comes but expect this movie to meet with a dull, a very dull response from the general public.

Hurrah for blood and gore but that's not what makes a movie.

P.S Is it just me or do the chaps@AICN play favorites with some flicks especially when it's by their fav director (e.g. Guillermo Del Toro/QT) or MARVEL (both Daredevil and The Hulk sucked, admit it!)?

Oh by the way, The Punisher doesn't look too good either ofcourse AICN will tell you otherwise. "Oh the script is sooo good" "My friend Avi Arad told me PERSONALLY that it's a great script." You frequent visitors should know the routine.

And AICN-staffer don't be misled into labeling this a jealous fan boys attack on you. In the past I used to rely on your sites honest opinions/reviews/etc of flicks but lately everything with the name MARVEl attached to it gets you highest recommendations even when it outright suckss!!!!!!

    Random Things on Kill Bill

    by danielkurland

Yes, I think we all thought the film would end at the grave, but that would only leave three chapters for part 2. I guess it will end on the, "You will live to kill again" "Splendid". The films has some cool aspects, like the bleeping of The Bride's name (although there is nothing special about her name, and I don't see why it must be hid), the Charlie's Angels-esque representation of the Deadly Viper Assasination Squad and other nice touches to the film. Not enough good dialogue though and I keep stating that that damn Lucy Liu and Crazy 88/Uma Thurman fight scene is going to be too long and it will jsut keep being more of the same. I do think this wil lbe a good movie, but if another writer/director's name was on it and not Tarantino's, I don't think people would question it

    by jasondkeldar

What?? You don't want to risk your money to show the film you think deserves showing?? Then maybe it is not too much to imagine film studios and distributors would not want to risk their budgets, strained by formulaic sequels, on films they feel are not worth risking a break-even, which a lot of what Hollywood puts out is an attempt to do. As for QT fanboys being responsible for his movies' success--perhaps for Reservoir Dogs, which most average filmgoers found too disturbing. Pulp Fiction was a movie I could talk to almost anyone under 40 about--and many people over 40 without the hangups of their contemporaries. The success of this movie would seem to hinge on the people NOT hung up on QT's past work, as the people who think they can judge the film by its script, or those who called "Jackie Brown" too cerebral might suggest a filmgeek backlash.

  • I swear it seems like every movie that comes out is either the greatest or the worst movie of all time. Face up to the fact...Matrix Reloaded was good but did not meet up to all expectations. X2 was very good but not great. Next to X1 any sequel would seem great. Yes Hulk was good and faithful to the comic and of course T3 was good and much better than expected. The reason why the site likes Marvel is because every movie in the past few years with the exception of Xmen 1 was very good or great. So I hope "fanboys" would stop treating every movie like humanity depends on how good it turns out. Just enjoy the movie for what it is and move on with your pathetic lives.

Here is what many of you seem to misunderstand about QT

    by orange bat

When Res. Dogs, True Romance, and Pulp Fiction entered the scene NOBODY had ever seen movies with this much style. His movies blew open Hollywood, and soon there were QT wannabes all over the place. Not only that, but his films opened the door for films like The Matrix which were more about style than plot. QT's dialogue was harsh yet poetic in an every-man way. His stuff defined movies at the end of the 20th century. Also, QT is about making movies for the love of making movies, much like the French New Wave. So, if you don't understand why Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs is a great movie, I suggest you try to find out why. Just saying he sucks shows your ignorence and your inability to self-educate. Saying Pulp Fiction sucks is like saying Truffaut or Godard, Hitchcock, and Welles all sucked. Ya, Tarantino is THAT important.

I'm right on the fence w/ this one.

    by jacknifejohnny

I love outrageous gore flicks, and old school kung-fu films, but there is a problem.
I'm also a lover of greatly told stories and freshly presented characters. I'm finding it difficult to warm up to the idea of sitting through 2 films filled w/ nothing but carnage and grindhouse nostalgia. I'm not whining like some other overly sensitive t.b's, I'm just saying that I cannot easily dedicate myself to following a story filled w/ nothing but eyecandy, and nothing else to offer. Again I love exploitation/grindhouse films, but I need a little a balance.
Another problem is that I've come to view the presence of non-martial artists in special effects assisted roles to be something of an insult to the men & women that actually have a working knowledge of the system.
It kind of cheapens all of the hard work and skill put into the films that QT and countless others have so much affection for.
I'm sure I'll eventually see this just for the fuck of it, but I'll be very reserved and hope that Tarantino doen't turn into a slightly better version of Michael Bay.
Show me a little heart QT, and I'll be 1st in line to support your newest baby.

    Westerns

    by moondog5177

Haven't read all these responses yet but I was over at Kendall on Monday. I just wanted to point out that the violence of this film, which makes saving private ryan look like a kids movie, and loose story are in the Western tradition, meshed with the Tarrantino. The Tarrantino aspects are not lost but are devoted more to the silent, set up scences overcast with often western, deliberative music. Much of the movie is a reminder of the greatest western movie ever made, the good, the bad and the ugly, than a shoddy Michael Bay movie. It honestly is a work of extreme aestheticism which outdoes the over-rated Reservoir Dogs, and yes RD is over rated in terms of glorifying pure pulp film violence. The fact that all fights are samurai swords is just as distinct as renegades and lawmen refusing to fight with anything other than pistols, and its setting in contemporary times gives it a macabre surreal quality, an interesting mix of kung fu, westerns and Quentin

Boston's a Breeding Ground for Ignorant Racist White Boys

    by phantom_turnip

I remember talking my girlfriend and her sister (both from Singapore) into going to Boston so that they could get a better hold on American history... They seemed pretty excited on the drive up, but what happens right after we arrive in Boston that morning?

A bunch of white-assed frat-boy-types pulled up in traffic next to us and asked my girlfriend and her sister if they were wearing pajamas and sandals... cackled and kept driving on. The two of them didn't understand what those assholes meant,. I suppose I could have drove after them, but what would be the point of ruining their day over some ignorant remarks? I shame-facedly explained it was a reference to racism in the Vietnam war - which pretty much colored their (and my) experience with Boston. And believe it or not, that was just the FIRST racist remark (and NON-SERVICE) we heard that day. As a white guy, I'd never seen that before in my life... but I'm glad my eyes have been opened to it, and the next time I hear some crack about my girlfriend or anyone else, I fully intend to pound the living shit out of the motherfucker that makes it (or drive my car into their's).

OK - I do database work on a couple of websites and I'm wondering - how can the order of the talkback be so incredibly fucked up? It's like you have a random generator on the thing. Naturally, even without sorting, a talkback would default to displaying records in the order they were posted. What the hell is up?

    Regarding QT

    by weedymcsmokey

Sometimes I think that films that try to use violence in some moral sphere often fail far more miserably - or do more damage than those that simply use it as an entertaining prop. That said, I think that if one sees a film like Irreversible and then Bad Boys 2 - in the end the far more offensive film is the latter, despite the brutality of the former. Then you have a movie like Trouble Every Day - which was black comedy of the highest order, and equally gross. I guess it all comes down to execution, not inspiration - if you can take message and morality and craft a tight, moving, well acted, paced and directed film then your message is stronger. If you do the opposite but still execute similarily then your also doing a service. I've always had a problem with violence in films, but never seem to have it in any of QT's. It just seems to operate in this vaccuum like place of specific mortality and ethics - like the samurai - only they say mutherfucker a lot more. QT's films are all deft, harmless, fun - but don't dismiss them as merely that - he is a craftsmna of the highest order and that is the canvas he chooses. Could I sound more pretentious.

    Female action hero=lame

    by limboslam

Remember when a female action hero in a movie was entertaining because it was different? Now it's a fucking cliche'. These moviemakers seem to be under the delusion that he/she is the only one out there making a movie with a female action hero in it. "...and the person kicking the shit outta a room full of 250lb guys will be a...a...a woman! NOBODY will see that one coming!" I thought it was cool seeing Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton kicking ass onscreen. But ever since Charlies Angels came out, the woman action hero has become a tired, worn out formula.
