The most amazing two word review from the KILL BILL Vol 1 Test Screening!

Published at:  Aug 12, 2003 4:19:01 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here.... Did you see KILL BILL Vol 1 last night? Well, let me know. Somehow, this two word summary just ain't gonna do it, cuz at this point - those two words are driving me fucking bat ass crazy. ARGH! MUST SEE MOVIE NOW! Fricking Miramax... Quentin said "Austin," not Boston! hehehehe, just kidding, I'm just envious as hell!

Kill Bill screening

Harry, I just got back from a test screening of Kill Bill held at the Landmark Theater in Boston hosted by the man himself, Quentin Tarantino. I need time to properly absorb it, but I shall write my review in a few hours and send it to you. In summary:

fucking wow.

Cheers,

I've been staring at that WATCHMEN rip-off poster for months waiting for some extremely bad-ass 70's-type painted poster art, like the one QT got Jerry Martinez to do for JACKIE BROWN. Yeah, the yellow tracksuit is cool but if Tarantino REALLY wanted to show his allegiance for 70's grindhouse cinema he'd get one of those awesone FOXY BROWN-type posters done for this film.

    by balls of steel

As Tarantino has yet to impress me with anything he's done at allI'm hoping that this is going to be good. Pulp was too cool for its own good, Reservoir was, to be honest, boring, Jackie Brown didn't fair any better.
With this film he has the chance of making an excellent tribute to chock sock films of old, but then what the hell does he do? His usual trick he simply takes Hollywood cliches and then mixes them until he makes a film out of it...people balancing on sword blades, Uma thurman fighting 76 ninjas...'the most violent film ever'...what? Who wants to see that (apart from everyone in America?). From watching Pulp Fiction it was obvious he was using old storylines from Film Noir classics, his writing of dialogue was great but his storylines sucked ass. So I think I'll wait and see if he's pulled his fingerout of his ass and written something original...

    Let me count the ways

    by renegadebushido

Sword fighting (samurai swords I mind you), Lucy Liu, David Carradine, Uma Thurman, Tarantino's direction, excellent traillers, excellent site, and to top it off it has Chiaki Kuriyama in her first American movie role. If you don't know this fine young actress you might remember her best as Chigusa from, my favorite movie so far, Battle Royale. The more I learn of this movie the more I want to see it. I can't wait to see where Tarantino is taking this. Will it be an old school kung fu thing or some wire pulling matrix action? Whatever Tarantino does I'll agree with because whatever does is just a slick, cool piece of a film. I like his style, he waits to bring his films to near perfection before releasing them. He's to the film industry as Blizzard Games is to the video game industry, and that's a very good thing.

    by tfministry

I'm more curious to see this film than anything. It certainly sounds fascinating, and unlike most directors, Tarantino seems to, ahem, enjoy films--So that can always be a plus. I loved Pulp Fiction for the stylistic but ultimately hollow piece it was, I enjoyed Reservoir Dogs for the way it manipulated the audience with violence and hints of it, and Jackie Brown was a decent adaptation of Elmore Leonard. Kill Bill is definetly a break from his past three films, so I'm really curious, more than anything. And that review was utterly pointless.

with ticket stubs comes great responsiblity

    by aaron asadi

Why are there so many ready to slate QT? Pulp Fiction is one of the defining movies of the last decade. I am not on his dick or anything but we mustn't be so ready to rubbish a film-maker who is both an extremely promising visual story-teller and a commercial success. It's because of this principled bull-shit attitude of "It's not as good as people say so I must exaggerate my negative opinion just to be heard." There's nothing wrong with negativity in cinema, infact more is required if we as the audience expect to see films instead of franchises, but we must be honest and we must encourage cinematic development- even if it is disguised as 70s retro (it's a deliberate irony)- and learn that contentment at the sometimes entertaining but ultimately regressive franchises is the direct result of an audience not using their ticket stubs to say "hey, give us a challenge!" Let's not confuse QT with the likes of McG, because even if Kill Bill is a failure as a film at least we can take comfort in the fact that it might have been a wrong step in the right direction. For similar reasons, the tragedy of this summer is The Hulk, because like it or loathe it, it was undeniably an effort to go somewhere new and exciting with cinema. This should be encouraged, otherwise we are just going to destroy the industry by sending out the wrong message.

For those willing to maintain a higher level of expectation, The Hulk was undoubtedly the best film of the summer. It was certainly mine and I applaud Heleno's declaration. Unfortunately, the power to decide the future of mainstream cinema rests with the majority- a group who seem disgusted with the notion that entertainment doesn't have to be alien to intelligence. So I say to this group: next summer when you are watching Tomb Angels 3-D: The Rise of the Black Pearl, remember that blockbuster isn't a genre unto itself but a measurement of the film's success. Blockbuster's can be an artistic triumph, and, for the love of all things film, why shouldn't they be?

    I've Read the Script

    by danielkurland

The movie looks like it will be really enjoyable. Although, I did read the first draft where Chapter 6 is "Yuki's Revenge", rather than "The Massacre at Two Pines" and the gambling scene with Bill is still in it. I hope they keep those scenes in some how, because I personally thought they were very good. It would make sense to end Volume 1 after Chapter 7 (The Lonely Grave of Paula Shultz), but it doesn't seem like the film will be timed evenly though, since the 2nd film would only have 3 chapters (unless chapters have been added). My complaint is that Uma's fight with Lucy Liu and the Crazy 88 just seemed SO long in the script. I know it is action, but it just seemed to take forever. We will see how this turns out on film, and according to the script we see Uma's pussy.

Gaddamn it, I live in Boston! Learning that "Kill Bill" played last night had me stutter-stepping to the can to chug some Pepto and let slip the dogs of poo. Thing is, I'm the biggest Q.T. fan in Boston and probably on the east coast (I've got a original signed Pulp poster from the New York premiere so, err, that makes me the biggest fan, right? Right. Can't none of you fade that!). Last time Q.T. was in Boston he was doing "Wait Until Dark" theatre. Whatever. Listen, can someone explain A) Why Kill Bill was tested in Boston; and B) how Miramax picks the audience for the test screening (I watched the last episode of Project Greenlight so please don't reference this). Here was an event that I could not afford to miss and due to lack of information, I missed it. Oh well, at least I was able to finish up with the second disc of "Down by Law" last night . Also "Reservoir Dogs" was better than "Pulp" in much the same way that the original "Terminator" was better than T2. And don't give me that one-is-a-sequel-and-one-isn't shit, you know what I'm driving at. Man, am I pained. . .

You don't like Tarentino? I can dig that. Ya know, some people just don't care for graphic violence and excessive use of foul language. That's cool. That doesn't mean your oh-pinions are in-valid. Hey, just because it's artsee fartsee doesn't mean it's good. "The Hulk" really didn't work in the end because it tried to be too many things. I think it will eventually be seen as a decent experiment that ultimatly didn't work. So, what do I think were the best of the summer? "28 Days Later", best character development in a summer movie this year, plus pseudo-zombies trying to eat brains. "Pirates of the Caribbean", reminds me of all the reasons I like films, and follows a hollywood tradition, most notably with Errol Flynn, and even earlier to the "Great Train Robbery". And "Terminator 3", big futuristic robots beating the hell out of each other. Oh ya, and I'm looking forward to "Kill Bill". WHy? QT's music choices are ALWAYS PERFECT! Also, that dude that jumps on the sword in the preview. AND Uma Thurman kicking ass. She and Lucy can kung-fu my ass any di-zay, yo.

    by smoothbrother

The Hulk carried a lot of baggage here in the States because of the television show. I spoke to some cats at work and it seemed to break down this way...

Many, if not all of my co-workers felt compelled to go because of their kids. Their kids wanted to see The Hulk so they were dragged to the theory. (Hell, some morons actually thought that it was a cartoon...yea, not everyone reads AICN, Dark Horizons and CHUD)

Other co-workers were expecting the television show. You know, poor David Banner walks from town to town trying to avoid capture and occasionally, when angry, turns into a big green guy that smashes shit and beats up bad guys.

Most of my co-workers have never read the comic so they thought that the Hulk flying (leaping) in the air and falling off of a jet was kind of stupid. Not realizing that the Hulk can do all of this stuff in the comic book.

Unlike Godzilla (which got it way wrong), The Hulk is a good film. I like Ang Lee's exploration of Banner's inner demons and I love the way the film was edited (24 style, just like a comic book.) Unfortunatly, the vast majority of the audience just didn't get it. I think it was too adult (ie boring) for the kids and too silly for the adults. It only pleased fanboys so the movie never really found an audience. It was a good flick.

P.S. I really do not understand the Matrix hate on this site. It is a bit annoying.

Second, half you guys shit on everything. Kill Bill looks very cool. Also, it was not QT's wish to split the movie in half. The bastards at Marimax made the decision to split the movie. Actually, from a business perspective, it actually makes a lot of sense to split an action movie in two...but that is the corporate darkside in me talking.

Hulk is original but so what

    by karl_hungus

I don't know how the Hulk became the focus of a talkback about Kill Bill and even more perplexing is why so many people on here like the it. It was the worst marvel movie to date(Not counting the movies made before Blade). It was a pretentious, dull, ridiculous collosal mess. I paid to see a movie about Bruce Banner, not his stupid dad and hulk poodle which is what Lee seemed to be focusing on. I don't care about Bruce's troubled past. I care about his troubled present-you know turning into an unstoppable vessel of destruction and all that. I want to see the interpersonal conflict of the Hulk and Bruce which is the underlying theme of the comic. Explain to me why Ang Lee tried to "expand" the comic movie by making it a more artsy, complex "film" and decide to use so many comic book touches like split screens and freeze frames? It undermined anything he was trying to do. And why didn't David Banner absorb the missile launched at him like he was absorbing everything else? Maybe I'm taking the movie to literally but I couldn't follow any subtext Lee may have been trying to establish. I thought this was going to be the best movie of the summer considerng Lee's track record and ability to handle drama and action-Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil, and Crouching Tiger. What an incredible dissapointment

    by smoothbrother

...but really, how hard is that to do in the summer with all the hype Hulk had leading up to its opening. If you were more informed Stormin, you would realize that Universal is very disappointed in the performance of the Hulk. According to Entertainment Weekly, the 70% drop for the Hulk in its second weekend was the biggest drop for a previous weekend #1 movie in history. Universal and Marvel clearly was expecting at least $200 million out of this thing, especially since it cost over $150 million to make. It seems that you Stormin are misinformed about the way the movie industry works in todays economy. $100 million just want do it considering that the average ticket price is about $8 to $10 dollars a pop. Plus, although I enjoyed the Hulk and I hope that Universal/Marvel is committed to a sequel, you have to admit that the Hulk was very disappointing from an industry stand point. Stormin, I invite you to read any trade and entertainment publication out there that will blindly deny that the Hulk was indeed a "miss." If I said it flopped, which I don't beleive I did, then maybe that was too strong a word. But the Hulk defintitly missed the mark at the box office compared to its cost.

    Smooth- out

kill BILL! kill BILL!! kill BILL!!! C'mon it's fun!

Hey, kids! Wire-Fu's all the rage. It's nice to hear some more support for The Hulk, even if it's after, like, over a month of needledicks pissing on it. [sigh] The long-awaited new film from the Q is coming; I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested. The premise sounds intriguing, and the trailer looks like vintage Tarantino-audacity. There was a time when this guy's name meant innovative entertainment. Pulp Fiction, now an acknowleged classic, was set as firmly in it's own universe as George Lucas's galaxy far, far away, and Kevin Smith's New Jersey. But it's been almost a decade since then, and a lotta shit's come and gone: Is Quentin's flava still in demand? I feel uncertain he will ever achieve the success he had with Pulp again. But, damn, wouldn't it be nice if he did shock and surprise us again? Or at least get us caught up in another maelstom of BRUTAL action, quirky humor, and freaky-ass characters!

I don't really see where the hulk was particularly thought provo

    by jiggamanspence

He gets pissed off, turns green, and breaks alot of shit. At the end his dad goes crazy and turns into a giant blob with scenes from the movie playing on it, then they get blown up, and then he's in brazil or somewhere. Was there any deep meaning to any of that? I didn't think so.

    hulk

    by starscream

I usually just read the talkbacks and don't post but I've just got to mention this.I haven't seen the hulk so I won't pretend it was bad or good that's not what this is about.Hulk grossed 130 mill. in the U.S. alone the budget was somewhere around 150 mill. last time I looked it had grossed over 100 mill. internationally(yes, there other countries besides America out there)so you guy's do the math.Yes,they did expect more in the U.S but I would say a 80-100 mill.$ profit is pretty damn good.Besides if was a total flop they wouldn't be so excited to do a sequel which is in the works as we speak. Now,I'm not trying to bash opinions here that's just not my style. All this is about is the facts of the matter.Oh,I forgot about it's very seaworthy legs on dvd and video so add at least another 30-40 mill. to that and that's just being safe for the sake of argument.I mean if Daredevil made 55mill. in it's first week on dvd I could imagine hulk could at least match that.Thank You for your time. I liked The Hulk

    by super cucaracha

I know that this was supposed to be a Kill Bill talk back but I couldn't resist. I thought Ang Lee did a good job trying to create the comic book feeling with the split screens. Nick Nolte stole the movie. The fight between The hulk and Hulkdogs was cool. The all around acting was good even CGI hulk acted. Some people hated The Hulk because they thought it was long art movie. Maybe if they make a sequel, The Hulk will smash shit up like an A-bomb and the geeks with acne will like it beeeatches!

ALLRIGHT, GOOD TO SEE THE HULK LOVE OUT THERE!!

    by meleractor

I'm a Peter David Grey Hulk lover myself, But I respect what Ang was shooting for, I think he succeeded film wise. The only thing I ask from a filmmaker or artist is that they stay true to their vision, hit or miss. Blockbuster success never meant shit to me except that the percentage of Buffoons compared to the Insightful in this country is disturbingly high.

Hulk was good? You all liked the Hulk? Fucking idiots... here's

    by theginger twit

Yeah i had expectations. Expectations for a good movie. Why was there no Clever way to bring in the gamma rays... like instead of him being hit with gamma rays, the gamma rays just power the machine which kicks in a muscle enhansing thingy. And why couldn't we have some good fun with HULK actually flexing and discovering his body and his power. That's what Hulk is. what we got was some SHIT... yes SHIT with a hulk thrown in, just for fun, y'know.
