Paging Dr. Gonzo! We have your RUM DIARY here!

Published at:  Aug 08, 2003 4:14:25 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with that big ol glob of a Seaman, Quint. Seems that Quint has been hitting the ol RUM DIARY a bit hard and has begun thinking about bat country and Barstow... silly bastard, its that crazy moonfaced girl that'll get him, but that's another tale and a whole helluvalot of ugly paintings, but for now, he's got some damn cool info on one great book adaptation. Here ya go, it's sunnyside up today...

What the hell kind of off the wall, totally unexpected news this is... Quint here... I got a tip off from a long dead president (thanks Mr. Humphrey) that Benicio del Toro was directing HUNTER S. THOMPSON's THE RUM DIARY... I thought he was bullshitting me until I went to Benicio's official website CLICK HERE!

Confirmed there... That is indeed very interesting. This man has been directed by a plethora or talented people. From Bryan Singer to Soderbergh to  Chris McQuarrie to William Friedkin to Guy Richie to Terry Gilliam to Sean Penn. If he's had his eyes open, he's been schooled by the best film professors anyone could ever hope for. I haven't seen the short film he directed, SUBMISSION... But if his directing skills are even half as good as his acting skills, then we're in for a treat...

IMDB lists Johnny Depp, del Toro, Josh Hartnett and Nick Nolte attached... Interesting casting so far if those aren't just some fan posted names. I'd bet no one's signed yet. They say on del Toro's official website  that no one is confirmed yet, although I'd be willing to bet Depp would jump at the chance to play Thompson again and I, along with the world's other major  FEAR AND LOATHING fans, am dying to see him attack the character once more.

I've got my eye on this project like crazy, squirts. It's one of the bigger blips on my radar of upcoming films. I'm sure Harry and Moriarty will also be keeping their ears to the ground on this one as well, so keep your eyes on the site.

I'll be back in a few days with a bundle of interviews. A kid toucher in need of plastic surgery... famous for a funny glove, a documentary co-director, a living comedic God and more are scheduled to come visit my crusty shack and sit a spell. 'Til that day, this is Quint bidding you all a fond farewell and adieu.

-Quint

    There is a God

My Christianity has temporarily been re-awakened, first with the Hyperion news, and now with this! This has made my weekend. Even the rumour of the casting has made my weekend! SWEET FREAKIN' JESUS! ... Ahem... I'm getting a bit overly fanboyish on this, so I'll just walk away with my dignity in tact, singing a happy little ditty in a tone that would make an eight year-old girl cover her ears.

    Fantastic

    by nervous twitch

The Rum Diary was the second Hunter book i ever read no where near his best work but it will make a great film. It would be interesting to see a film adaption of " FEAR and LOATHING on the Campaign Trail '72 " . That would make an interesting filmic experience.

    WAIT....

    by kubla_khan

...Maybe I know too much about this, but here in the UK the book is called The Rum Diaries and the protagonist is not Hunter S. Thompson, but rather someone fictitious. A lot of people get this confused. The Rum Diaries was a novel based on some of his personal experiences but was not directly autobiographical. It's a story, folks. Therefore, Depp wouldn't be tackling the same character again (which must make it much more likely that he'll accept the role). Whatever, I'll be watching it.

    just so you know

Depp never played Dr. Gonzo... Depp played Hunter S. Thompson, del Toro played Gonzo.

    Raoul Duke

    by elviskilledjfk

well... to be more specific... Depp's character was Raoul Duke, but obviously it's a parody/caricature of Thompson.

    Johnny Depp

    by liquid_daze

Of course Depp is on board, he gets to do his patented style of half-assed acting - Funny Accents & Exagerated Mannerisms. In the early '90s it looked like Depp was going to become the Legitimate Tom Cruise w/ movies like "Scissorhands," "Crybaby," "Deadman," and the amazing "Ed Wood." He worked with outsider directors and gave us wonderful performances, but ever since "Fear & Loathing" he's (for the most part) been doing the same thing. "Do I get to do a weird accent?" "Do I get to smoke my handrolled cigarettes?" "Am I allowed to do better acting in my Interviews than in the actual film - ya know how much I love playing Johnny Depp?" We already knew he was good looking & cool from his Tommy Hansen on "21 Jump St." and the first "Nightmare." For the record I think Gilliam's great and I liked the first half of F&L. But I'd like to see Depp return to the Gilbert Grape type stuff, w/c isn't as sexycool as "Sleepie Holla" or "From Hell," but does feature more of that, um, uhh... -oh yeah, acting.

I like the blue muppet, too.

    by nakedyossarian

The hero of "The Rum Diary" is named Paul Kemp. But he's Hunter, same as Raoul Duke is. Thompson worked at the San Juan Daily News and so does Kemp. If you haven't read it, the novel is pretty dull, the lamest of Thompson's books. It doesn't have a lot of Capital Letters or Drugs or any of the things that made the good doctor's prose unique and exciting. ... And I think Depp does Lucky Strikes rather than rolling his own smokes. LSMFT

Allow me to just make a plea not to cast Josh Hartnett

    by industrykiller

I don't know what kind of character he will be playing but I know for a fact that there is a far more talented and deserving actor out there for the role.

    Terry Gilliam SHOULD direct this...

    by roger thornhill

It would work better I think if Gilliam directed since his unique vision made Fear and Loathing the underrated masterpiece that it is.

Now, this is more like it!

    by aonemantidalwave

I do not believe this! I always saw myself as the man to bring Rum Diary to the screen, even though I have no prior experience at handling a major production. Now that ne'er do well Del Toro has sneaked the bastard from under my godamn nose!
Still,I must confess I am excited. Seeing as good ol' stick Gilliam majorly fucked up Fear and Loathing by turning it into (essentially) a slapstick Cheech and Chong movie, it'll be nice to see a slab of genuine Hunter on the screen. The story is less ramshackle and therefore (in my eyes) easier to adapt.
One plea though, I love Depp as much as the next man but let me say this, PLEASE let someone else have a crack at playing a younger Thompson. I have no ideas of who exactly but I REALLY don't want Johnny to forever be seen as Hunters movie alter ego.
    Peace to all geeks!
