Hey folks, Harry here with a link to all sorts of Harry Potter goodness... HOWEVER, I must say that the coolest thing you'll find on TheSun's page is the story about Stalin's assassination attempt of John Wayne! I shit you not! Dear god, I would kill for film footage of John Wayne intimidating a pair of Commie Assassins! Link to Stalin/Wayne Story!

Nice kids book, adults that read it are retarded.
How long can Radcliffe carry on before he is given a hairy magic wand and purple sack of magic?

Thanks for the pix. I'm looking forward to this next installment because I am one of those retarded adult Potter lovers. I do have children, so perhaps you'll find that somewhat acceptible. As for the more casual look shown here - I believe these shots are from the Hogsheade weekend chapter in the book. Kids just kicking around on their day off stuff.

Parents with kids & Potter is alright.
You should read Phillip Pullman's "Dark Materials" trilogy to them, now there's kid fiction that adults should read.

War against heaven, trepanning, armoured bears, witches, daemons.
Much more interesting than some myopic nu-metal wizard with shit hair.

A mate recommended them, and I thought "witches, pixies, bears and magic...bollocks". But started "Northern Lights" one rainy day, ended up buying the other 2 that weekend and read them in one go.
I just dont like Harry Potter books, tepid imagination, piss-poor writing "it was hot. Harry liked the heat. The grass was green" etc etc, and dont see the appeal for adults.
"Dark Materials" by Phillip Pullman. Has ideas a lot of adults aren't going to like, god knows why they're aimed at kids.

  • ...And are planning to make the whole trilogy. I think they even signed Philippa Boyens from LOTR to adapt, but don't quote me. Haven't heard if they're going to take a shoot-em-all-at-once chance on them either. Haven't read Pullman myself, but plan to from a lot of people's recommendations. Still haven't decided if I'm going to read HP or not. Probably, eventually, if only out of curiosity.

    by goatboy

Man, that'll cost a lot if they do it justice.
They're worth a read, not quite Tolkein level of otherworld, but a lot more intelligent than Potter.

Some of the stuff is going to really hard to do well - armoured bears that talk, daemons that shapeshift, spectres, odd elephant things with wheels, an entire land of the dead...if they do it right, I'll be geeking down the front.

I will definitely read up Dark Materials, thanks for the recommendation. Although I'm familiar with the books, I haven't picked them up yet. Been stuck in the land of history books as of late. Just finished a first novel by Brit author, C.J Sansom, called "Dissolution." Monks, monarchs and mayhem in Tudor England. Very good read. Also quite worth it is Alison Weir's "Mary Queen of Scotts and the Murder of Lord Darnley," MORE monks, monarchs and mayhem in Tudor England. Now there's an idea, Hollywood...bring on some monks, monarchs and mayhem (no, not "Name of the Rose," wasn't that Italy?) While were on genre stuff: more pirate swashbuckling is fast on the way. Trades announced yesterday that MGM is launching its own mayhem on the high seas with "Devil's Crew." A young Royal Navy officer is going to take on argh-be-garh pirate Edward Teach - aka "Blackbeard". Here's hoping whoever they cast looks better in knee britches and Royal Navy togs than that master and commander of girth - Russell Crowe. (Sorry about this last bit, couldn't resist. I'm really looking forward to the film.) And then there's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Can't wait.

    by earthworm

  • I really sound like a Pothead now. It's amusing to see all this posturing over such a stupid thing. The Pullman trilogy is certainly more elaborately incendiary than Rowling's, and that's a good thing so long as you don't get caught up in its novelty. However, people much more qualified to critique whether or not writing is "piss-poor" are fans of the series, and it's worth a look at least. There are plenty of cloying moments to be had, and certainly rehashed conventions, but I still don't regret having read them. As for the pictures: they all look pretty atmospheric, and the Knight Bus is nifty. I suppose shaggy hair is Cuaron's idea of adolescent rebellion, seeing as every male character heretofore has it. Can anyone that's more trivia-inclined tell me if Professor Trelawney is in this movie? I did a little perfunctory research, but I couldn't find any mention of her. Finally, that John Wayne story would make a great movie if they could get someone like Wes Anderson to do it.

Professer Trelawney will not be in this one which means they must have cut out the whole story where Hermione drops Divination which is a shame because I like that. It shows that although hermione follows rules she won't put up with crap basically. There's no Oliver Wood in this one either. But the powers that be have said that doesn't mean there won't be any Quidditch. Thank god they haven't cut that! Trelawney not being in it puzzles me though. She may seem insignifigant (I don't think I spelt that right) up till the end but she's very important for setting up the fourth book and also the fifth. (That's not a spoiler). They have said she'll be in the fourth film (if it get made) but whats the point if she's not in the third?

Thank you. Yeah, her excision strikes me as odd, too. Obviously there are ways of working around it, but almost every subplot of the novel runs through her, not to mention the prophecy at the end. Maybe they thought a prophecy would seem too much like a commerce cocktease. Maybe they thought her presence was too whimsical for this film's theme of burgeoning darknes, I dunno. I'm sure that Cuaron will have to field that question a lot over the coming months, so there's no point agonizing over it now (not to mention that I'm sure that he had good reason to excise her from the final film. As a director, it's his prerogative to decide what meshes with his vision, and I highly doubt that he sent her packing because he's allergic to shawls). Then again, I don't even know what the hell I'M doing anymore, so hypothesizing what the hell anybody else is doing seems kind of ironic.

I just watched Secrets & Lies, I loved him in Topsy Turvy as well. He's a great actor and also fairly fat, he'll do Wormtail justice. (will he drop the pounds for the sequel though???) I've seen the pic of Gary Oldman as Sirius and I'll hold my tongue since I'm in the minority on that one. David Thewliss, the actor playing Lupin, starred in another Mike Leigh movie "Naked". I hear his character's quite nasty in "Naked", I'll wait until after "Azkaban" comes out to rent it.

    1. Naked - Yet another depressing Mike Leigh film. I don't deny they are well directed films but god why anyone would want to sit through that level of depression I have no idea. (Did not see film by choice. Live with ilm students who make me watch these things)

    2. Pullman I don't think blames God. Don't know if you'ved read all of them but I felt the point of Amber Spyglass was God had lost his grip through no fault of his own. Possibly conveying Pullman's believe that God has lost his grip on our world and that why things are so shitty. personally I don't think they're anymore shitty than they ever were in history.

    Philip Pullman and Religion

    by earthworm

He was on the South Bank Show a while back (a generally pretentious, occasionally fascinating arts prog in the UK) explaining this. His problem apparantly lies with organised religion and the stories and ideals it represents, not God per se. I'm pretty sure he denied being an athiest. He despises the Narnia books though.

    I'm somewhat worried

    by lobanhaki

Part of the whole point of the books is that its an alternative version of English Boarding schools. Also, it plays heck with continuity, since the characters have worn the robes for the first two, and the ancient dormitory feel was an essential part of the first two. He may have gone straight fantasy, which worries me because some of the charm of Harry Potter is the willful anachronism of many of the elements. Get too hip, too with it, and you lose that element. I just hope he gets the right parts through. One can only wonder about Rowling's take on this.

    About the Uniforms

    by ribbons

I can understand, at least from the publicity stills that we've seen so far, that people might have a little anxiety built up inside of them over anticipating a mini-'The Emperor's New Clothes' here. However, remember that Chris Columbus, while bowing out of the director's chair, is still producing these films. As a director he'll probably respect Cuaron's integrity and allow him to toy around with the series a little, but I doubt that he'd let him dispense with the robes altogether. That, strangely enough, would seem like more of an anachronism than the presence of robes in the first place.

  • Enough of this "they'll be too old" BULLSHIT!!!! Face it, any kid will grow out of the age faster than they can make the movies, so why recast when the actors who are most familiar and recognizible in the roles still look like teenagers? They aren't playing 11-year-olds anymore, they're playing aging teens. They won't outgrow the roles until you get to the sixth or seventh movies, the books for which probably won't be released until they are well into their '40s. As Peter David remarked, Radcliffe will then be old enough to play Snape, and Alan Rickman will graduate to Dumbledore. So the kids will never be too old to be in the movies EVER!

John Wayne may have gotten a few gamma rays while filming the 1956 mongolian classic The Conquerer in the Nevada desert. But that wasn't what killed him in 1979.(By "classic" I refer to the Duke spouting lines likes these..."I feel this Tartar woman is for me...and my blood says take her !") The fact is John Waybe smoked like an old Chevy through out his entire adult life. He even lent his name and image to Chesterfield smokes back in the day. That's what got him in the end. What did he Swallow the butts after he smoked 'em?? BTW those who talk smack about Potter are the same trolls who talk smack about every single popular thing that appears on this site. They don;t have favorites, just reasons to make their own egos feel bigger by unloading on something people like. I admit I trashed Reloaded, but that was simply becasue I was tired of the hype, so far beyond the hype for Blair Witch I thought I would puke.

    TRENDY CLOTHING

    by robe

What is that idiot Cuaron doing?
Why are teenage witches and wizards wearing trendy muggle clothing?
I know they still have robes in the movie, however the clothing the cast is wearing is completely out of place. Even if they are visiting Hogsmeade in their free time, it is an all wizard/witch village, they should at least be wearing cloaks. Why do 3rd movies have to dumb down always?
Wizard culture is old-fashioned NOT modern.

    WHAT AN IDIOT!

    by robe

Imagine the scene the students visit Hogsmeade an ancient village populated completely by wizards and witches (no muggles).
Instead of blending in, by wearing cloaks (as described in the books) they end up looking like a bunch of muggle tourists visiting some old place. Is this director mad?

    Some REAL HP3 pictures

    by drexxellnec

AICN sucks...I've tried to give Harry these links and he blows me off. He obviously only wants to hear from his masturbatory little circle of geek friends. Fuck them, I just want people who like HP to see this...

Go here for some high quality HP3 pictures (many of which are the digitals from the Newsweek article):
