Learn How Spike Returns To ANGEL!!

I am – Hercules!!

Ah, the casting pages for the second episode of “Angel’s” fifth season (written, they say, by David Fury and Ben Edlund) turned up Tuesday!

What we learn:

* Spike’s a dang ghost! Well… A major character in the episode will refer to Spike as “a ghost -- close enough, anyhow.” Cleavers pass right through Spike, as do doors and walls. He mocks Angel incessantly, and Angel has no means to escape the ghostly taunting!

* And check it out. Spike is somehow “stuck” to Angel! Another reason for blondie not to look up a key slayer pal!

* But don’t worry, girls! Unlike Cordy’s longtime roomie Dennis, Spike can be seen. Well, he kind of blurs in and out, and even disappears at times. Ghost-style. If you will.

* For the second time in two episodes, Angel will badly ruffle the feathers of his new Wolfram & Hart underlings.

* For the second time in two episodes, Angel will rankle a key Wolfram & Hart client. This week’s disgruntled? One Magnus Hainsley. No relation to “West Wing’s” hot red hot and blonde Republican Ainsley Hayes. One presumes.

* Hainsley, a telekinetic, runs what Angel terms a “body shop” and has uses for the recently deceased. He services an inhuman clientele. If you’re thinking snacks? You’d be wrong. (Herc affixes a finger-and-thumb “L” to his forehead.)

* Hainsley stops short of dusting Angel, noting that the senior pardners still have plans for the series’ title character.

* Angel pulls an “Eliot Ness” on Hainsley. Which Spike mocks as well.

* Hainsley hints that Spike’s ghostly status could be temporary – if Spike teams with Hainsley against Angel.

* But it turns out the flesh Hainsley initially promises Spike won’t look very Spike-like. But will nonetheless be very Buffy-boyfriend-like. IF you know what we mean.

* Spike intimates that he likes Winifred Burkle in a more-than-brotherly fashion!

"Angel" returns to the WB Oct. 1. "Angel" 5.2 airs Oct. 8.

Oh no! I so didn't want this to happen. Mind you, I like the idea of Spike getting on Angel's nerves - might bring back some of Angel's bite (excuse the pun!).

on the whole Spike as a ghost thing, if they do do it then I hope it's only temporary. Just sounds a bit kooky to me. But I guess I'll put my trust in the show to make it work. If they're going ahead then they must be confident that it'll come off well, and they've never let me down before.

    the soul brothers

    by DyslexicHeart

I've got high hopes for this season but don't want to see Spike as a ghost for too long. It would be "nutering" him the way the chip did at first in Season Four before he had the "I can fight demons" revelation in "Doomed". But him being connected to Angel(making him unable to go after Buffy) is a great idea. It's not in Spike's character to walk away from her like Angel did. Although I do hope there is more explination this season about Spike's soul. When Angel was first presented as a character that was so unique and we were given the impression that it was not something easily done. I don't disagree with the story arch of Spike seeking and getting his soul back, just wish there was little more exposition about who or what it was that gave him his soul back and if there are any "terms" like with Angel's curse. (Completely off topic but "Private School" from the early 80s is on TNT and damn! Phoebe Cates is hot!)

Spike's been neutered too long, I'd like to see him back as being dangerous. Of course I'd like him to still be a good guy, because even good he'll still be a pain in Angels ass. Just hope he's not floating around "Randall & Hopkirk Deceased" style for too long.

    Well crap...

    by zer0cool2k2

...oops. What I was going to say, is that I hope this whole incorporeal Spike is only temporary. Doesn't really matter how much he likes Fred if he's just so much attitude, accent and apparition. Solid Spike needs to be restored by at least mid-season. Then we can get some real animosity going between Angel, Gunn, Wes, and William. All the girls will be gaga over how heroic Spike was to sacrifice himself, and all the boys can be jealous. hilarity will ensue. Maybe Harmony will be involved in getting Spike his body back.

  • I used to say Darla, Drusilla, and Lindsey, now I'm saying Lilah--they've systematically removed the best characters. Fucking idiots! At least Connor's departure means he won't fall into the "and WHAT were you adding to the show again" bin of irrelevance formerly occupied by poor underdeveloped Dawn. She could have brought great things to the show, but it's like they feared she would overshadow Buffy so she got Joyce's "family at home" role. Dumb move. Meanwhile, this Spike the Ghost crap had better be temporary. Those idiots saying there can't be two vampires with a soul on the same show are WRONG. The very nerve of stripping away that uniqueness from Angel is the very reason it should have happened! Making Spike into a ghost just makes him gratuitous--as if they're trying not to lose Marsters to other projects the way they lost Eliza Dushku. If there isn't a spin off with Faith, Wesley, and Spike then stupidity has won.

Anyone remember that really bad 80's sitcom with the bimbo blonde ghost haunting the dorky protagonist? This Spike-as-ghost premise is strongly reminding me of that bad, bad show. + Sounds like Fred will have 4 suitors this season - Gunn, Wesley, Spike, and the scientist whose identical twin brother happened to be a vampire on Buffy. by JessicaDwyer

Well...I was soo hoping they wouldn't do this ghost crap. This sounds so frigging lame that I'm scared to watch it. Of course it's Spike going into Angel's body. That's stupid and ignorant. I was excited about this, thinking there would be some great banter and tudes from the fact that Angel is pissed that Spike had a soul, and therefore took away his being the only one. But now it sounds like Joss is just stealing from other shows like a klepto. And someone tell me why the hell EVERY MAN (except Lorne) has to have a thing for Fred???!!!! If they pursue that, I will stop watching it, James Marsters or no. I'm getting fed up with how this show has to have some damn romantic triangle. One is plenty, but jesus, bring in other characters then or something! Fred has about as much personality as a grapefruit. And to have Spike already gunning for her (pun intended) after the whole Buffy thing is just dumb and out of character. All I have to say is this...I'm with who said that it only better be for an episode or two. If it's for all season, I'm not going to watch. I'll give them a bit of a chance since it is the last vestege of Buffy on tv, even though the series finale of Buffy was right up there on the crap-o-meter with DS9, Voyager, and Quantum Leap. Angel used to be a good show..and it could still be. But last season nearly did me with it. I can only pray they learn and it can be saved and that it's not as stupid as this spoiler made it sound.

    Ghost Spike and the Visions

    by DanielKurland

At first I didn't like the idea of Spike being a ghost. It means that a very strong character cannot fight and basically I thought it would be really gimmicky. This stuff alright doesn't sound so bad, but they have to change his state pretty soon, you can only do so much as a ghost. I thought it would be a good idea for Spike to inherit the visions because that resolves the vision storyline, and Spike is demon so he can handle it. I also thought it would be great to see Spike lying about the visions to everyone, so he could fufill his own agenda with them. Wesley, Fred, Gunn, and Lorne better be up to a lot this season.

Spike's "ghosting" is temporary, and he actually saves Angel. That Necromancer guy tries to put Spike in Angel's body, but Spike tricks him and goes into the other guy's body! Then Angel kills him with no harm to Spike. Doesn't anyone here read the Spoiler Slayer?

i wasn't so sure when people starting complaining firefly was a rip-off of farscape, but now, a 'ghost' of the lead characters arch-enemy who only he can see, following him around, criticising his actions and trying to take over his body..... it's all starting to sound pretty familiar.

For those of you who asked

    by RightFlank

Here's a link to the script that had Spike returning as a human male slayer (or at least the teaser & first act) that was floating around a few months back. http://www.angelfire.com/film/cultleader/angelscript.html Interesting to read it now. People were bitching that it wrapped up why Spike was there too neatly, saying Joss doesn't write that way. Yet, the first thing Team Whedon did with Spike was wrap up his return into a self-contained little story line in the second ep. Not sure which version I like better. The corporeal slayer Spike or the ghost Spike.

Say WHAT?!? Mutant Enemy pls read

    by retroactive71

I don't often post here, but Mutant Enemy folks have been known to pay attention to fan reaction, so PLEASE folks, pay attention to this post. Spike being a ghost equals Angel jumping the shark. This isn't like when Buffy fans were disgruntled with Tara being killed off and didn't realize that it needed to happen to perpetuate Willow's character growth. This just seems like a bad ratings-driven idea. I'll ignore the fact that it completely negates Spike's sacrifice in the Buffy finale because, as a selfish fan, I don't want to see James Marsters' Spike disappear from the Buffyverse. Plus, I think Spike would be a great foil for Angel and an excellent addition to the show's cast (also purposefully ignoring the shameful way Charisma Carpenter was ousted). But making Spike into a ghost?!? Please don't do this. It's not too late to change, is it? Personally, I thought the fan script that had him coming back as a vampire slayer made more sense. It was eloquent. I can understand Joss saying there will never be a male vampire slayer, but keep the rest of the fan writer's idea and pay him a little stipend for the idea. The necklace saved Spike's life. Shanshu propecy anyone? I'd rather Spike be a superpowered human again than a ghost. Though I'd prefer Spike as a vampire with a soul, making him human would make a lot more sense, and would give Angel much more reason to resent Spike for taking the reward that "rightfully" should have been Angel's -- a restoration to humanity. PLEASE Mutant Enemy -- please don't do make Spike into a ghost. Angel has always been a superior show to Buffy, but I am worried it's going to strap on the waterskis next season if this is what's ahead.

    Quit yer whinin'!

    by Death Machine

Seriously, all, you should be happy that the Spike character is getting an afterlife on Angel, which apparently, since all you Buffy fans never watched the show until you heard Marsters was making th emove over, owes NOTHING to Buffy anymore. It's a good show and, in the last few years, consistently more well written than the tired cow that spawned it. If you HAD watched before the SPike-transfer hype, you'd know the writers are a talented bunch and you'd trust them to give a talented actor like Marsters stuff he can work with. A strong character who can't fight? Sounds like a great plot/character complication to me. A ghost anchored to this world through someone he despises? It's been done but so has just about every other idea possible and it could be taken in a fresh direction given Marsters personality. Personally I think Buffy was the only thing that made Spike a "hero" at all. Everything "good" he did, he did for her (he's said as much). That means his motives were always selfish and, technically, still puts him on the evil side of the cosmic equation (I know plenty of people with souls who also fit this bill). Spike's motivations have always been determined by the current object of his affection. As he said in a season way back: "I'm Love's bitch, but at least I admit it." Now that there's no Buffy, I think it would be entirely in character for him to go after the nearest hottie... especially if she was desired by others. And it would also be entirely in character for him to revert to his more overtly "evil" ways. Spike was one of the greatest... perhaps THE greatest... Buffy villains of all time. Give that back to Marsters and let him make Angel's life an unliving Hell for a season... with or without a body. All you drooling heroic Spike fans can just deal with the fact that its the character, as played by Marsters, that you love and not the mantle of heroism he assumed to get into some cute little bird's pants. Bring on Ghost Spike! Angel beware!

angel vs. buffy, which show has/had better writing?

    by elviskilledjfk

Overall, i'd have to say that Angel has had a lot of great writing that surpasses the writing from Buffy in the past few seasons (maybe with the exception of the Spike as Randy Giles and Evil Willow eps). But then we have this past season of Angel which sucked. The only reason I kept watching was because i kept hoping it would get better, and instead, it just got progressively worse. I thought it was a horrible idea having such a formidable baddy last season, and then taking Connor, who's never exactly been a proud member of Team Angel, out of the equation just when he was starting to make his way over to the dark, albeit confused, side, not only hating Angel but everyone else. But this last season sucked ass anyway. I'd have to say that the only things that saved last season were Wesley's intense character development and Faith's brief story arc. Faith sucked when she went back to Buffy. blah. it's depressing just thinking about where this show might be headed.

    by JT Styler

The bitches. The Styler here. Of course, Spike won't remain a ghost for long. Anyone remember Cordy's amnesia storyline last season? Jeez, you lot are quite amazing. Can't you ever just wait and see i.e. calm down? Oh and by the way, Angel doesn't have more than two seasons left in it, I'll be surprised if it gets renewed this year. Not for lack of quality tho. Now, let it be known that the only seasons of Angel that are consistently good are Seasons 3 and 4. Unfortunately these coincide with the destruction and frankly, waste of Cordelia as a character, a founding one at that so frankly I thus preferred season 7 of Buffy to season 4 of Angel. Has any season of Angel topped Season 2 or 3 of Buffy? - in a word, no. But damn, they are close. Thus I doubt anyone can say that Angel is the better show overall, frankly they're rather different like Frasier and Cheers. Anyway, point is fellow Ats fans - Calm down!

    vampire slayer

    by mike1880

Just want to bring up a point: To be a vampire slayer doesn't mean you have to have buff's powers. The chosen one is an ordinary girl that is chosen by some mystical force to inherit the previous slayers powers. These powers give them the ability to slay beasts because of their superhman strength and so on. They dont have predestined paths either. they die when they die. Then the next girls is chosen. Other beings in the buffy verse, both male and female, have their own powers that allow them to slay beast as well. Examples are good vamps angel and spike, gwen raiden, various demons, willow, oz...etc. So that is why spike being a male vampire slayer is not a good storyline...because he has been a slayer/warrior since he joined buffy's group. Normal/ungifted people can also be vampire slayers because of their normal fighting ability and luck. Examples xander, dawn, gunn, wesley etc....

PS. Why does Angel always peak early? AND feelings toward Spike

    by JT Styler

Think about it. Season 2- Drusilla and Darla followed by the Pylea joke that gave us Fred Season 3 - Lame ass Santification of Cordy finale Season 4 - Slow and boring finale despite cast and writer's best efforts. Yes, you heard right Home is admirable for what the change of direction it allows in the show but it is a lameass finale. And yes, Chosen kicked ass. By the way, Season 6 of Buffy was a bold, creative undetaking that may have backfired for most. There seem to be three types of Spike feelings tho' - 1. Those who love him with his shirt off, never watched Angel and are now bandwagon jumping. 2. Those irrational twats who hate and blame Spike's character for "wrecking" Season 6-7 when he did the same as Angel in Buffy season 3. They will hate him in Angel, no matter what. The same folk who were "Spike's being wasted - it's kick the spike" in early season 7. 3. Those who love the character, and have watched both shows since the start and will go where the story takes us before judging i'e me. The Styler has spoken

Whendon, Whedon, no matter. I know who you are talking about. Spike needs to become corporeal so a large tree can fall and stake his ass. Yes, I prefer cancellation to him being on the show. He adds nothing and takes away from everything. Good to see Angel still coming to grips over killing his only child. Oh wait, it's a Spike episode so none of that stuff matters. I'd prefer an entire episode of Angel masturbating to Fred/Gunn sex (I prefer Angel fully clothed and pissed off) than anything to do with Spike. I hated BtVS but loved this show. Angel Season 5 is looking.... questionable at best.

    by xNikk

I have been a HARDCORE Angel fan since the begining. I have watched every episode numerous times, and have always looked past the bad things and plot inconsistensies to see the "greater good" of an episode. That being said, this new season seems nothing like the Angel show that I have come to know and love. Forget Spike being there and Cordy not. Forget the fact that only once I started to like the character of Connor, did he get "killed off". And of course, lets forget the fact some major plot threads from last season still need to be tied up. Despite all these thing, I still will watch the show. BUT I fear that the show will not be something I want to watch. My favorite thing, about all shows, is a season long story arc of some kind. But Whedon has already said that there will be none of this. The whole "self-contained episode" thing makes this show sound an AWEFULL lot like like a crime/lawyer show with a vampire. THIS I DO NOT LIKE!!!!! Granted, nothing has been set in stone yet, and I have also not seen a single second of season 5, so I will not yet judge this show completely. I will watch and see. But rest assured, I will not watch this show at all if it is not still the show I started watching.

    Unpopular Opinions

    by Corwinstar

Ok, now alot of people aren't going to like me for what i'm about to say - and for those who don't "bite me". Both Angel and buffy have gotten better almost every single season. Season six was the best season of buffy followed by 7,5,4,2,3,1. Yea i said it the high school years were no where near as good as the later. Why can't you people understand that the show is all about growing up and the changes we go through in life. The first seasons were all about the triviality of school and little crushes and shit. The later seasons were about family, working, making choices. Real life shit, buffy is the kind of show that grows as you do and you idiots who insist that the only good seasons were the first three and buffy should be with angel forever... DEAL WITH IT! Lets try to give the writers and the mastermind behind both of these shows, Joss, some credit. Now to Angel, Angel too got better every season and every character (yes including Conner) was valuable. I love Angel but every season it has got better and better. I think some of you are so afraid of change that if buffy cuts her hair you freak out! Now when it comes to my personaly opions, I am a huge spike fan, I like james marsters and think he is very talented (Ghost of the Robot). I realized i don't care who buffy picks, cmon lets face it shes a pain in the ass. Personally not thrilled bout spike bein a ghost but once again TRUST THE WRITERS PEOPLE, believe it or not they do know what they are doing. I'm gonna end with saying that both shows continually get better and I can't wait to see what the talented writers, cast, and crew give us in october. "But thats just my opinion, I could be wrong."

    Quit yo complaining

    by the_talkbacker

With Spike taunting angel like this it'll be like the good spike from 'lovers walk' in buffy season 3 and season 4. It doesn't matter if he's a ghost, spike was all about the comedy!

I am gonna wait and see.....

    by Noodles1971

While I don't love the whole ghost idea, I want to see what happens throughout the season. I don't see him staying all ghostly and being that effective. Spike loves a good fight afterall. But I will say, I kind of thought that a Spike/Fred ship might launch this season. I think they would be a good couple. Wow, I am sounding like logic girl now.

Spike and Angel are each other's bad habit. JW should just come out and make them a couple.

I can just hear Whedon congratulating himself.

    by QueenAttolia

"Ghost Spike! Fabulous concept! All the Spike-haters will love this because it will marginalize him (can't fight, can't nail Angel's women); the Buffy/Angel lovers won't feel threatened by Spike's misty ghost penis which can't touch Angel's Property, ie Buffy, when we bring her back for the Big Daytime Drama Style Triangle during May sweeps; the admirers of Classic Snarky Spike will love to hear him insulting Angel again; and the stupid women who just want Nekkid Spike won't complain about him being transparent and incorporeal as long as he's shirtless! Who cares if I'm turning what was once my only quality show into a carbon copy of the soap opera that spawned it? I rule! Everything I do is pure genius!"

    Spike the Ghost Boy

    by nat9761

I know that Spike will only be a ghost for a little while. It will get him in the Angel group: God knows that he wouldn't seek them out. He has to be a reluctant member at first like he was in the Scooby Gang, find his role, yadda yadda yadda. On the subject of Fred, Spike just might flirt with her. I don't see a real thing developing. Spike has had issues of attraction/affection from most the women in Buffy's gang: Buffy, Willow, Anya, Dawn, and Joyce. Why should Fred be different? He is quite a sexual creature and this ghost state will freak him out. I just hope he doesn't get back with Harmony. I do think Buffy loves both Spike and Angel. I wish the world would allow her to be with them both. Not kinky like at the same time, but keep them both as lovers. Maybe polygamy is a good option for her. (ha ha) Plus the potential for Spike/Angel flashbacks from the 1800s will be so great.

You guys have all of your info wrong.

    by Willthe Bloody17

First of all, I have been at the Angel set and may I say things have been coming along very nicely. Second of all, the in-corporeal Spike tyhing is only temporary and he will be full corporeal soon there after. Lastly, in response to all of the "Harmony is dust talk", she is most definetly alive. She was last seen in episode 2x17 "Disharmony", when Cordelia kicked her out, but did not kill her. Cordelia only found out about Harmony after a call to Willow in Sunnydale.

    Sounds fun!

    by NeedJossFixNow

I agree with some of the previous posters that Ghost Spike is the best way for Joss to get Spike on Angel. It solves a lot of problems and leaves room for change. I watched first season AtS, but didn't watch as much after that. Now, I'm reading the episode recaps and trying to catch up so I'll be ready for Ats Season 5. Spike has the potential of bringing a lot to the table--I hope the writers don't squander that. And as for him turning evil--don't make me laugh! In my opinion, Spike's redemption was one of the most gripping stories TV has seen in a long while, and don't think the writers don't know that. They would be foolish to ruin it with a pointless about-face. I don't care who ends up with whom in the end, but I'd like to see Spike and Angel mend their relationship. Eventually, after much snarking (and oil, of course.)

All you Spike People need to chill for a sec...

    by Speedstream

Okay...I accidentally stubbled onto Angel while looking for Birds of Prey one night...and figured since it replaced the TV show i wanted to watch, i might as well give it a go. Since this time last fall...I own Seasons 1-3 of Angel and watched the rest of Season 4 on tv, and own all of Buffy season 1-6 and wathced the rest on tv. I can safely say I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. What you all need to understand is that Buffy and Angel have the same genius creator, but TOTALLY DIFFERENT sets of writers. They seperated Angel and Buffy for that reason...they played there love arc out...and left it open for them to get back together in the very very end. Thye seperated the shows to go in different directions. Buffy is over...buffy fans...get over it! It sucks but o well. She'll be on Angel here anyway. Buffy "created" Angel-she'll be back. Now...when you come over to Angel to see Spike...don't expect to watch Buffy. Angel is DARK. Buffy was not...not matter what happened in Season 6(which really wasn't that bad). Spike will be a great addition. He may be annoying, but any true fan will look past that and see the differences in the charector and in the shows. The writers are not going to make everyone happy...they are probably only gunna make the true fans happy. And if ya cannot get get on the bandwagon w/ that...then get off. Thinga aren't gunna change because you people whine about it. Frankly, all your whining does is annoy people. Enjoy the show for the show. Don't try and control it...let Joss and the writers do there job...we all know its gunna be awesome in the end anyway!

    it's already been done

    by lovin' lenk

This has already happened does no one remeber "In the Dark" season 1, episode 3 of Angel spike spent the first 5 mins of the show mocking angel and i was kinda done with it then. there's only so many smartass remarks about angels' girly nature u can fit into 1 season. so unless this is any better. they should just give Tom Lenk(Andrew) his own show cause that would be worth wathing Nicholas Brendon and Tom Lenk roadtrippong it up the east Coast in a wesley windom price Rogue demon hunter kinda way
