Wait A Minute... There

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Damn it... I am having trouble getting some image issues resolved, and that sucks. I wanted to run some stills with this article, and hopefully I’ll be able to add them in the next few hours. I want to include them because I think they speak for themselves.

See, a couple of months ago, I got a number of e-mails from people with photos attached. An alley. A film crew. Rain at night. And there in the middle of it all, Batman and the Joker. I had no idea what I was looking at. One person swore in their e-mail that the “bald dude” in the crew photos was Darren Aronofsky, and that these were photos from his BATMAN: YEAR ONE project. I could see why someone might think so at first glance. The Batsuit being used was obviously cloth and leather instead of sculpted rubber. The actor in the Batsuit looked like he was in amazing shape, perfectly cast. And the Joker was totally different than Nicholson’s version, much more the demented whip-thin clown of recent comics.

But since I couldn’t begin to figure out what was being shot, I didn’t see any way we could run the images. It was frustrating, but I figured someone would turn up, or some explanation might be forthcoming. Of course, leave it to me to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m stuck in LA all weekend, when it looks like the action’s taking place in San Diego. I’ll let today’s scooper explain:

"Mystery BATMAN film REVEALED"

Moriarty,

Word has it that over the past few months you've received several intriguing photographs from fans in Los Angeles who claimed to have stumbled upon a very elaborate, live-action BATMAN shoot. The sometimes-blurry behind-the-scenes images seemed to indicate that a great-looking Batman was actually going before the cameras in secret. Well, I'm here with the real scoop!

Indeed, there was a BATMAN shoot, but it was for a short film that is currently being kept under lock and key. I have seen this film, and it's any fan boy's wettest dream! It looks AMAZING. I managed to get hold of a few images directly from the 35mm film, and have enclosed them. I think you'll agree that this is the best looking Batman ever put to celluloid. The actor really carries it off, a true testament to the director's casting eye. The story has a majorly PISSED Batman confronting the Joker for the last time in some dark, back alley during a rainstorm. Trust me when I tell you it’s got some mind-blowing surprises in it.

This is proof that you don't need to stick a name actor into a stiff, rubber suit of armor in order to make Batman work in the movies. There is a way to do it right and this director certainly did it. He's an industry professional, and I really want to see more from him. He and his crew are obviously tremendous Batman fans.

I'll try to send you more info on this wild short later this weekend!

Call me, Griffin!

Now, I’ve spoken with Griffin on the phone. He’s not the filmmaker. I’ve also heard rumblings from sources around Kevin Smith, who evidently loves this film, and Alex Ross, who thinks it’s the best visual representation of BATMAN on film so far. This thing seems to be striking a chord with anyone who gets to see it. I've even heard about a few other characters in the short who weren't in those photos, and if what I'm hearing is true, this is a crazy, crazy short film, and a fan fantasy fulfilled.

I wish I could chat with you and tell you exactly where to go in San Diego if you want to see this film. I’ve heard word that fans who keep their eyes open may get a peek at it during Comic-Con. I’m personally dying to get my hands on a copy to see if this is really as well-made as I’m hearing. Anyone who has seen this thing... let me know what you think. The curiousity is driving me crazy.

"Moriarty" out.

Now for the pictures:

Added Father Geek info...

I just minutes ago saw this film (twice) and the accompaning "Making Of" on DVD. Its a 2 disc very limited edition set. Sorry I didn't take notes on the people involved, but they are all pros (tired of Batman being done WRONG), the director use to work for Stan Winston, the sculptor is a major player too.

Sistersatan, Harry's little sister, scored the DVD set out of the blue directly from the director with his permission to use it in her shop, sooooo at some point soon it will end up on the shelves of her little DVD & VHS rental shop PEDAZO CHUNK here in Austin.

Sistersatan is NOT renting or selling this film at Pedazo Chunk... but will gladly show it FREE to anyone who wants to see it in her shop!

It is outstanding, atmospheric, noirish, heavy duty Bat-Action like you've NEVER seen, a crazy, demented, sick Joker right out of THE KILLING JOKE, lots of other bad-guy creatures you can only dream of too!

"What's the set up Father Geek?" you may ask. Wellllll, It looks like the Joker has just escaped from Arkham Asylum... He's in grimy hospital clothes, wet, desperately running thru darkness and heavy rain barefoot... On the rooftops the Batman coolly stalks his prey... they confront each other in a Dead End alley... there are heated words and blows exchanged... suddenly the Joker is ripped off screen... then the shit really gets intense...

Its seems the director was in Austin awhile back working on another film and got in the habit of going to PEDAZO CHUNK, fell in love with the mom & pop shop, soooo he decided to send them one of the few copies of his finished flick to add to their store's esoteric collection. BOY AM I GLAD HE DID!!! I am a huge BATMAN fan and have been for over 50 years. I have never been satisfied completely with the Warner's visions. This IS my fave... a living breathing REAL Neal Adams creature of the night. SEE IT!!!

Read this and weep Harry... you're seeing HELLBOY realized over in Prague, but I have finally seen MY vision of the BATMAN kick major ass!

The way it sounds like this is straight out of the batman comic book #614. In it the joker looks like he killed a childhood friend of Bruce wayne and Bats snaps and decides to end it all there. Great issue featuring catwomen and commisioner gordon trying to stop bats. If they pull it off this is going to be one fucking great short movie.Wish i was going to san diego

Yeah is is probably pretty cool, but it is only 8 minutes. It's a lot easier to make an interstig 8 minute film than it is to make a 90 minute one. So what if it "proves" that you don't need a big name actor to do a cool Batman...everyone already knew this already. I wouldn't mind watching this as it sounds fun, but it is nothing momentous or ground breaking.

He has no illusions of a self-image because you skinny little pukes with no background in movies(read the words I did not say films) won;t get over the fact he is heavy and prolly has his own private forest of car deodrorizer trees in his place-of-residence. by OneDisturbedSOB

I've seen this film, and for all of those who think Batman is fat or the costume looks like shit you're seriously wrong. First off Batman is played by a fitness model, so there goes the fat theory. Secondly the suit is taken from Alex Ross' designs almost to a tee (expect for changing his belt to black). The movie is fantastic, and will be appreciated by any true Batman fan, not just a bunch of whiney assholes that claim they could do better. If you could do better than why don't you detach your lazy ass from your precious computer and show us what you got. For the rest of you that are looking forward to it, you won't be dissapointed, Sandy Collora should take over as Director of the new Bat-flick!

    Batman Short

    by micben1

I am a bit suspicious of this story. Barring this short showing up on the 'net, and me actually seeing it, I doubt that it is what is claimed. The photo on the linked web site looks like a still of Alex Ross' costume model Photoshoped into a digital background. Until a file of the short is up for view, I am going to be dubious about this story.

Seriously- This place seems to be overrun with smarmy little gits who think they're something special and like to flame everything. It wasn't like that in the clunky old days, and the old-timer regulars here don't usually act that way. If the studios use this place as a gauge to measure fan reactions, they're looking at the wrong crowd now- A lot of the new guys here are real prats and just insist on hating everything unless it's The Matrix or anime.

    by ascendent

I saw a copy of the short last week and here are my thoughts. I thought it was the best version of a Batman costume I've seen yet. As opposed to the movie version, this costume gives Batman the flexability he should have always had. And the guy in the costume is NOT fat. He has the physique that Batman should have. The director, I understand, works for Stan Winston studios, which explains the high quality of all the costumes. It was made as a showcase for his directing skills and it seems he'd make a good second-unit director. But, since it's primarily posing and fight scenes, I have no idea if the guy has any skills as a narrative storyteller. For fans though, it's pure geek-gasm by virtue of the three "enemies" he has to fight.

It's nice to see that Corey Haim's been working out. And Corey Feldman has made a great Joker! Great job, Coreys! This is a better idea than License to Drive 2! Now where's Heather Graham as Catwoman? Okay, I'm fucking around, but seriously, it could be good. But I'm guessing this is fan-made, not some WB-driven vehicle. Which is sad. I think the only thing Jon Peter's ever done right was Kim Basinger. ---------------------------------http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66979

    Adrien Brody as the Joker

    by kafka07

I think this Batsuit is perfect. It gives it a more reality based feel to it, and not some over-the-top quality like the WB Batman movies. And it harks back to Batman's origins, it's classic Batman. It's like Miller's Batman. And that dude is not fat. Hey I'm not gay but I'm able to notice the guy works out. That Joker dude is good, reminds me of the comic book Joker, really skinny with bulging eyes and maniacal grin. And it takes place in an alley, a quintessential setting for Batman,...instead of in a museum playing hockey to get back a stolen diamond from Ahnuld. I'm happy this little film was made. Looks like someone in the industry cares. I think we live in a good age for comic book films. All the little kids that grew up watching the Superfriends and Spiderman cartoons are grown up now and they're taking over the film industry. Yay :-)

Hmmmmm.... Thoughts on "Batman: Year One"

    by Cliff Roswell

Well, gee, what can I say? This looks very interesting. Batman looks like a cross between both Frank Miller and Alex Ross's works on the Dark Knight. I feel that the Bat-suit could use a little more work on it though. Joker, on the other hand... Fuck, man! Someone has been channeling the Clown Prince of Crime's spirit, because he looks DAMN accurate! Except the eyes... There's something about his eyes that looks almost... uh... Gollum-ish. I know that sounds stuipd, but look at J-man, and then at that ex-Hobbit. Frelling freaky, man. Other than the suit, I have no qualms or anything to bitch about for "Year One." It just looks fucking awesome. I'm still kinda pissed that they took "Birds of Prey" off the air, though. That was the one show which took the Joker/Batgirl relationship seriously. But don't get me started on Mia Sara.... --Cliff Roswell

    Best Joker Ever

    by Bootskin

This guy could even rival my fan-boy choice of Tim Roth as Joker.... Of course, because this was made, they will never use similar costuming/visual effects in a feature length film. They'd never stoop so low as to "imitate" a "lesser" indie film maker....WB sucks.....

You know, if this shit is for real...that's pretty great stuff. I am never a huge fan of fan films but hey, who did this did it right. I think it's sad someone will make a 8 minute movie better then the real ones. Burton's film is a triumph of prodcution design with a terrible script and an over the top performance from an actor coasting on his persona. The other ones I won't even mention. Nolan is a great choice but this frightening crap sounds fucking stupid. Somebody needs to burn it to the ground and start over. I hope the person on guard at the WB slavishly reading talkbacks tell the higher ups how fucking idiotic they are. Some guy made a goddamn fan film better then 4 huge movies they shit out. Good luck Nolan. Don't make another Insomnia. It sucked. Don't let Goyer write it. You should. Blade 2 showed who the real genius of the first Blade was. I hope the makers of this film (if it is that) get it on the net soon. That's all.

The Joker you see on the old Tv show and the movies is nothing and I mean absolutley NOTHING like he is and always has been in the comics, which I remind you is the source material for everything. So if anything they have always screwed up the Joker and this is them actually getting him right. The animated series is the closest ever to portray him right but of course they were aimed for kids so it couldnt get too violent. Lord praise Mark Hamill and praise this guy!!!!!!

Great. I'm very happy for Father Geek for being able to see this movie. I'm very happy for Moriarty for being in a position that will probably allow him access to this movie in a reasonable amount of time. And I'm happy to hear that something like this exists, that something like this could be and has been made and that there are others out there who will be able to see it. What this article does not address, what this article doesn't ask about, is how the hell the rest of us will ever have a chance to see it. You know, those of us with jobs and school and other obligations that prevent us from going to San Diego tonight or traveling all the way to Pedazo Chunk just to rent a movie (that may be checked out). How about asking the question, "Will this be offered for sale or download online?" I do remember that there was a Spider-man/Green Goblin fan movie that was made and offered for sale on DVD and for download on a website. I don't know how the works out legally, but it's been done. I can't imagine Warner Brothers appreciating somebody making money off of their property, but if a downloadable version was offered for free, I doubt there'd be trouble. Maybe the filmmakers don't want that. Maybe they don't want to do that for several good reasons. Maybe this is just an eight minute long resum

If you think the actor playing Batman is fat, look closer...

    by Psycho-Man

The man clearly works out a helluva lot and has the physique of a body builder. Wait, why am I talking about this guy's muscles? Anyway this film sounds very cool and I would love to see it. Batman's suit is definitely inspired by the paintings of Alex Ross, but anyone who knows Ross' work could tell you that. Joker is pretty much right on from what I can see except for the eyebrows. So it seems very visually acurate to certain comic book representaions of the characters, which is good. However, I have long felt that in the next Batman movie from Warner Bros. he should wear a suit that is a combination of the traditional comic spandex-looking kind of material and the body armor sort of uniform from the previous movies(the Burton movies not the homoerotic Schumacher crap). I feel that in a movie that tries to make the character more believable and realistic to audiences, Batman must have protective equipment implemented with the suit. I know that in some of the comics Batman's mask actually covers a thin but strong helmet and kevlar is behind his chest emblem, but I think it should be more apparent in the movies if Batman is to be more grounded in the real world. It's nice to see that a film maker can show the fans and Warner Bros. how Batman should be done and that it doesn't take an enormous budget to faithfully reacreate the Dark Knight and his world. I'm optimistic that Chris Nolan and David Goyer are perfect for the daunting task of restoring the Batman franchise to it's former glory and then some. I'm just trying to say I badly want to see this film. Uh, the fan film that is.

    Info on it all

    by stew312856

The film's name is "Batman: Dead End". The director is Sandy Collora. I seriously hope Warners doesn't pull the stupid gig they did with Harry Potter and sue the guy like they did owners of HP domain names on the net when the movie was being develpoed. Instead, they should buy it from the guy (and kiss him on both cheeks for making something that actually deserves the name Batman) and show it in theaters, where it belongs. Hopefully, it will go on the internet (wink wink nudge nudge Harry, etc) or be picked up in some other way so the general public can see it. Or, at least it could go around the convention circuit, those go around mosy states.

    Batman's in his underwear....

    by ichabodvic

That's what my 6 year old and 3 year laughingly said when they saw the pictures of Batman from this short film. While the "atmosphere" in this film seems right, the Batman depicted could almost pass for a WWE character launching himself from a "wrestling" ring's corner post. Why can't Batman's "uniform" be based on a combination of a US professional football player uniform with the utility of a military uniform? Would anyone with the supposed intelligence of Bruce Wayne venture into the urban night to fight crime, bullets, knives, and bad weather wearing tights? (Even more, not wear an athletic cup to protect his crouch?!) Moreover, when is the last time there was a genuine "champion" triathlete, martial artist or rock climber who also had a body builder's physique? A body builder's physique has never equaled the flexibility and strength required for dynamic athletic ability. If the creator/director is trying to encourage WB to create a Batman film with a dark, harsh and brutal atmosphere the comic books have, then more power to him. Just don't expect a Batman wearing tights not to be laughed at.

    by Commando Cody

Being a fan of old serials, I love the look they captured here. And being a fan of the comic in it's earliest incarnations, they nailed the look. I don't care who did this (fan or pro) or why they did it, but they get 2 thumbs up for the results...least based on these few stills. Totally kick ass. Oh, as for people saying "Why doesn't Warner find a way to release this" or "Why can't they attach it to something for fun" or "Why can't they post it so Bat fans can download it" the ending certainly prevents all of that. If you read thru the posts and find the spoilers -- and you learn "who" Batman fights BESIDES the Joker -- you'll instantly see why Warners would have to get ANOTHER studio to let them release this...

"Moreover, when is the last time there was a genuine "champion" triathlete, martial artist or rock climber who also had a body builder's physique?" Spoken like a true nerd who's never touched a cardio machine or weight in his life. Go check out the homepage of the UFC: there are tons of guys who look like competitive bodybuilders who could whip the ass of 99.99% of the population. Olympian-level gymnasts are also built like brick shithouses. As for the tights controversy: people, that IS what Batman wears. TIGHTS. Not fucking body armor designed to mask his complete lack of physical development. (Hello, Mr. Keaton.) I repeat: this is not Iron Man. Warners/Tim Burton/Schmuacher have no fucking idea who this character is. It's his CAPE that's bulletproof, and from the looks of it, you could make the case for his cowl to be, as well. When the cape is draped down, his body is generally protected from bullets. In close quarter combat, it's flung over so he can fight. If you're familiar with the Miller Year One story, and Batman's origins, that costume is as faithful as one can possibly be. I can't wait to see this film.

I though the Animated Series could never be matched

    by Space-Dog

Having been a life ling Batman fan, I've always been disappointed by his represenatation on screen. Only once the Animated Series arrived did I feel that my hero had been really captured by the creators. Kevin Conway and Mark Hamill will alway be Batman and the Joker for me now, but this Batman:Dead End shows real promise. Some of the stuff revealed in spoilers seems alittle off for a live action promo, but all of this is stuff that has appeared in the comic so, nuff said. But the most important thing is that we Batman fans need to see this, our faith in a live action Batman needs to be restored. Marvel is ruling the roost with its film and TV projects, that really capture what we love about the comics, and DC seems to have lost its way. Although I enjoy Smallville and Birds of Prey, they lack alittle of the energy and comic book-ness that the Marvel product has. Someone needs to host this as a Quicktime movie for us all to see and enjoy. Or the DVD must be made commercially avaiable, from the reaction its receieved here it must surely be a winner. Being stuck in the UK can be a disadvantage to getting this stuff , so I rely on you my American Friends to help get this project the exposure it needs for the World to enjoy it.

OMFG!!! FINALLY! IT's Bob Kane Batman!!!!!

    by VatoRudo

If I were Warner Bros, I'd scrap whatever Batman flick is on the books right now, and stick Sandy Collora at the helm, because if the reviews and screen caps are correct, this shows that you don't need sculpted armor, or a bigname director to make a batman flick kick ass. Gone are the days of Joel Shumacher making Gotham City look like a gay night-club. Collora has captured what I always felt to be the essence of Bob Kane's Batman, the real batman, not the fruity 60's television and comic incarnations of Batman. This is the real gritty deal Batman: Year One style. Like in the comic, the actor playing batman appears to be intremendous shape, as seen through the CLOTH COSTUME, which looks even more amazing than any of the rubber body armors of the past. honestly, I think this adds more to the Batman feel, as it always looked to me like Batman was wearing a cloth costume, and this looks like something he actually could have made himself. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Tim Burton's renditions of Batman, but this one captures the darkness even better. I mean, with all due respect to Jack Nicholson, this Joker looks SINISTER AS FUCK!!!! He looks purely evil and insane, and crazy enough to shower someone with acid. beautiful, just beautiful.

This being AICN, I wouldn't take these reports seriously at all except Father Geek mentioned something about "creatures" and another TalkBack-er (who didn't reveal the ending) said Warner would need to get another studio's OK to release the thing. And I'm trying to think who else could suddenly "rip the Joker off-screen". The Last Son of Krypton comes to mind, but WB wouldn't need permission to use him. So what's the straight story here? I'm hoping this is a case of frenzied fans letting their imaginations run wild... like the X-geeks of a couple years ago who had themselves convinced "X-2" was going to be based on the "Legacy Virus" storyline (whatever the hell that was).

    The Costume

    by Shaw

You guys seriously think this looks better than the kevlar/leather suit of the Burton films? That really surprises me. I'm all for staying true to the source material but this doesn't look that great. The Joker looks cool though.

    The Death of Batman

    by wolverine18

I was at Comic Con for another short that made the film festival called, "The Death of Batman." I actually played the Dark Knight himself. Although our little $5,000 movie didn't compare to "Dead End" in terms of art direction and cinematography, it was much more interesting from a narrative standpoint, in my opinion. If anybody would like a free DVD, please feel free to contact me at chris@highspeedla.com. I'd be happy to send you one.

    Warning: MASSIVE SPOILERS

    by Lelon

MASSIVE SPOILERS for the first half of this film. DO NOT CONTINUE if you want to be suprised... ***************************************************** OK. Batman chases Joker down alley, they exchange some extremely cheesy and poorly delivered dialouge about how they "made" each other. Its like Burton's Clocktower, only really really bad. Then, an ALIEN (from Aliens) comes down and snatches the joker, then falls into the alley, then the alien fights batman, then the PREDATOR shoots the alien and jumps down to fight batman. The predator looks good but the Alien looks worse then it did in the first Alien movie. Thats all I've downloaded so far. If it werent for the fact that Predator looks so perfect, I'd write this up as a fan made fiasco. This is really, really awful. The reason I'm posting this is just to hear all you people call me a complete nut. Don't worry, I wouldn't believe it either and won't hold it against you.

Bottom line is no one could fight crime wearing a cape

    by Son Of Batboy

All that bitching about the rubber suit not being flexible enough is ridiculous. You can't have realism with a guy who fights crime wearing a cape, period. Fighting bulls? Yeah. Criminals? No. At least the first film was smart enough to include body armor. With all the guns on the street you'd have to be total dope to go out in the pajamas pictured above. To treat this realistically would be to have Batman get shot or arrested his first night out because his friggin flappy cape got caught in a door. Plus, with all its rustling, the damn thing would make more noise than corduroy pants on a fat guy. So much for stealth. Half the time you'd be trying not to step on it or knock things over. Jump off a perch or over a wall, you better pray it doesn't get snagged or you're likely to hang yourself or end up with a nasty whiplash. It also gives any thug the perfect chance to wrap that thing over your head while his buddy pummels you senseless then rapes your underoos wearing ass. All sorts of problems to contend with before you think of rolling on those gray pantyhose and tying a curtain around your neck. The character is best portrayed in a stylized setting where the rules of the "real" world do not apply.

I love to watch and listen to a bunch of fat nerds site behind their computer and complain about how "they could do it better" Get a life and go out and do something besides complain about a guy who had enough balls to go out make make something that he felt so serious about. Do yourself a favor,if you don't like what you see...save your money, get some talent and go out and make yopur own film. At least Sandy Collora is trying to bring something better than what we've seen in the past, give the guy a break. As for the actor playing Batman, I think he did a great job and I'm sure he did exactly what he was told to do. As far as him being fat, give it a rest...put down the Krispy Kremes, and get your lard ass to the gym.

    SPOILER filled review

    by JiggamanSpence

I'm telling ya, dont read this if you dont want it spoiled. Yes, it is available on Kazaa, i just watched it, and i was a little let down. everyone made it sound like this was going to be the greatest superhero thing ever, where as it was just a bit above average. The Joker was perfectly realized, although he isnt in it too long. I thought batman was pretty cool to begin with, but he became a bit of a wimp. When that Alien pounces on, him i could understand him being taken a back a bit, but when the predator gets there, batman gets knocked around. Now I know predators are powerful, but i personally would've prefered to see batman go ape shit and absolutely bash the living fuck out of that predator. Instead he gets tossed around and does his silly screaming. That ruined it too, batman shouldnt fall down and go "ahhh! oww!! eee!" like fucking just jack, he should be standing right back up and kicking some ass. I guess that's just what id prefer to see. But all in all it was a very well done fan film that is getting a wee bit overpraised, but still is very well made and has good production values, and i hope that this director has a long carreer making cool dark creepy movies. and thats my 2 cents.

You people and your obsession with TIGHTS

    by GrammarThefAuto

Anyone who says TIGHTS look good is an idiot. Yes, Batman wears tights... in the comic. And in comic books tights are a millimeter thin and FLAWLESSLY cover every inch of the body like water, and never have wrinkles. That's because they DRAW it that way and it's not the real world. In the REAL WORLD, these tights look like fucking PAJAMAS. And that SUCKS. Get it through your fat pimply heads geeks. The rubber/body armor suits of the batman movies are a nessecity, because it is the only thing that looks good. Batman in this film looks like he's wearing pantyhose. OK? It's a fucking pair of pantyhose! He looks ridiculous. If I had to choose between a rubber suit with mucles, and a pair of longjohns that make batman look like he's at a gay costume party, I AM GOING TO PICK THE BODY ARMOR.

The OTHER Batman short at Comic Con

    by wolverine18

I played the Dark Knight in "The Death of Batman," a $5,000 movie that was shown on Friday at Comic Con. Although it doesn't compare to "Dead End" in terms of art direction and cinematography (they probably tripled our budget), it definitely is much more interesting and unique with regards to the narrative. If you'd like a FREE DVD, contact me at chris@highspeedla.com. I'd be happy to send one to you. And by the way, there are NO TIGHTS in this one!

    by Mark

As a non-fanboy with no pretensions or Hollywood connections, I will offer my opinion on Batman: Dead End. Apart from a few weak shots, this is extremely well made. Acting: could have used a little more "oomph"... Andrew seems to be capable, but he needed to add more of a "crazyness" to his delivery. Batman was just fine - no probs at all. No Keaton or Clooney or worse yet, Kilmer baggage to deal with. Production: very good. Anyone who says "I could have done better" clearly has no idea what it takes to produce film of even this quality. Costumes: Bats looked a little too "Adam West" for my tases... all the rest were just fine. You fanboys will never be satisfied.

    Batman: Dead End

    by Playhouse

Wow. Color me impressed. Turned out much better than I thought it would, especially from the pics. The atmosphere, the lighting, the camera work were all exceptional. While I've been a fan of the all-black Batman look since the '89 film (if not totally thrilled with the whole rubber suit thing), this short certainly captured the look and style of Batman. Some of the moves that he pulls are classic Batman. And I loved how they brought him down to earth. The Joker gets the sucker punch on him with the brass knuckles and like a badass, Batman backhands him, spits out his blood and then turns to kick him down the alleyway. It was everything we've come to expect of an urban fighter but have never really gotten before on film. While I was certainly impressed with the techincal achievement of the rest of the film following the two big reveals, I would have liked to seen it more grounded. More between the Joker and Batman. Koenig's Joker is spot-on (though he borrows a bit from Hammil's Joker voice when he first starts speaking). This should be a wake-up call to Warner's on the direction to take the franchise. Nothing said Batman more than the shot of him jumping off the roof, tucking his legs up to his chest and then jutting them back down to dart towards the ground, the Bat-signal blaring in the background. The slow-motion shot of him hitting the rain-soaked ground and then standing (complete with momentarily extra-large cape for effect) was stunning. That little sequence alone was the definitive film vision of Batman.

  • July 21, 2003, 8:04 a.m. CST

    The cape shot rocked

    by therealdeal

I agree, the scene where The Batman stands up after landing from his rooftop jump ROCKS, it looks like a million dollar CG effect they would spend a week on in Hollywood. As far as Batmans suit is concerned, I thought it looked great, ya it had a few wrinkles, you can see the seams in the rooftop still, but overall it had a classic appeal. As far as people laughing at the premiere at the Con, that is absolutely absurd, people cheered when the other characters showed up. They also seemed to love Clark Bartram, the actor who played The Batman...as they cheered him in the credits. Ya, he may only be 5'9"-5'10" or so, but don't you jerkoffs realize half of Hollywood is 5'8" or under...Keaton is about 5'6" for goodness sakes. Bottom line here is you people are so damn bitchy about everything, enjoy this film for what it is ( a great attempt at classic Batman) and get on with your boring life.

    by Drath

Single pics just don't tell you if a movie is good or bad--plenty of awful looking pics posted on AICN have preceeded excellent films. But...tights? It looks like Adam West returns. And What are those caterpillar eyebrows on the Joker? As someone said, he looks like Grandpa Munster. Sure I'm picking, but what do I have to see but a few pictures that don't earn the raves I reading? I don't see what's to get excited about with these images. They're dark sure, but they still look like they could have come from a straight-to-video crapfest just as easily as from a David Fincher movie. I have to see some footage to get me going on this one.

I take it all back... well, mostly

    by TheWoodMan

(***spoilers***) I definitely stand by my previous statements that dedicated fans of any given source material will create better results than Hollywood hacks out to make a buck off of merchandising. That said, I withdraw my praise for this film. They got off to a good start, proving that overpaid, overrated celebrities are not needed (at all) to bring fictional characters to life. They then piss it all away by bringing in Aliens & Predators... exactly the move a Corporate Entity would pull in order to sell more cheap action figures and Happy Meal toys. A previous post said Batman, Aliens, and Predators have "history". I have to disagree. Batman has a history with the Joker, Two-Face, Commissioner Gordon, Catwoman, Ra's al Ghul, the Penguin, et cetera... what he had with Aliens & Predators was a marketing ploy worked out by lawyers for Fox, Dark Horse, DC & Time-Warner-AOL. People have been making wisecracks about Gremlins and Ewoks... but why not? If some idiot at DC did a one-shot deal with Lucasfilms to have Bats fight a troop of Ewoks, would that be a legitimate part of the "Batman Saga", or an embarassing jump-the-shark moment that would make fans wince for years? Superman boxed Muhammed Ali back in the 70s; do we need to see Ali as the bad guy in an upcoming Superman film? Batman has been an enduring part of American Pop Culture for almost SEVENTY YEARS (!!!)... there are many reasons for this, but cheesy, money-driven inter-corporate crossovers aren't one of them.

    my 2 cents

    by superzario

I was with it right up until the alien. then it went downhill. still the fight scene was awesome, very Bat Man like, I just wish it would have been Bane. You could have the same fight just dress that guy like Bane instead of the predator and it would have been the greatest 8 mins. of my life. Instead it was a very cool movie that just makes knid of squirm when I look at the aliens. too bad.

Followed up by Batman vs. Superman vs. Aliens vs. Predator Archie vs. Aliens vs. Predator Blade Runner vs. The Thing Spawn vs. Mary Kate vs. Ashley Can you believe that? It's not Mary Kate AND Ashley - it's gonna be Mary Kate VERSUS Ashley. It is going to be one helluva fanboy year. This is a film by a guy who is desperately trying to get the attention of Hollywood's elite. This isn't an example of someone trying to be true to the Batman franchise, it's just someone trying to get hired as the director of one of the many potential upcoming Batman, Aliens and Predator movies. Sad. Should have been called "The Bad Joke".

I mean they were playing it straight, which is good, but it was so damned closed to being a parody of Batman you might see in another more serious movie, ya know? It was almost laughable. You NEED Kevin Conroy to do the voice of Batman, it just has to be or else it sounds too corny. It wasn't the jackass crap of Batman and Robin, but by comparison I think Spider-Man felt more sincere. Just goes to prove we need to meet the man under the mask before we can get into him wearing a dorky costume, I think. Maybe the heads up I got here sent me in with high expectations. If I'd seen this with no expectations at all, I probably would be cheering for it.

    Reason for disapointment

    by superzario

I think the big let down has to do with the fact that none of the pictures shown showed the predator or alien. had I know they would be in it ahead of time I would'nt be shaking my head in disbelief now.

    by Lance-Man

and I didn't have to travel all the way to San Diego to do so. I actually just typed in a search for it at Kazaa. A source came up so I figured I would download it. What I downloaded was the best representation of Batman to date. The man playing Batman has the perfect Batman build. This is how Batman should look. The Joker could've been better...I absolutely loved his look though...I maybe would've liked him better if I had gotten to see more of him. And the twist when Joker disappears almost made me cream my pants. It was absolutely unexpected. I see why WB would never release this. Lets just say this...Batman becomes the prey of some very mean, very famous creatures...there you go!

A quick question for all the morons...

    by Montauk16

Okay, opinions are like screenplays, everybody's got one. Fine. Understood... But riddle me this... If this film is such a pile of crap, why does everyone in Hollywood have their assistants running around around town trying to find this movie? I know! They want to flush it down the toilet like the turd it is! No! They want have their lunch served to them on it, so their fallen salad crutons can be redeemed on! Or maybe Warners or Fox will put a bounty on Sandy Collora's head! Yeah! That's it! Boba Fett will go after Sandy and he'll put him in movie fighting Batman... Yeah, that's definitely it. Fett rips, so does this flick... I need a latte.

But it's not as great as everyone is making it out to be. It's all right, I guess. It was semi-interesting in the beginning, but then it got stupid with the Alien/Predator angle. And it didn't even have an ending. It just sorta stopped. Ho hum. This site sure knows how to build shit up like it's cake, don't it?

    Hey Montauk...

    by mtoast

If you're the real Sandy Corolla, then congrats on the buzz you've generated. I think some of the negative comments here -- my own included -- came from the massive hype. Although I thought the story was silly, I loved the cinematography and the representation of Batman. Beautifully done. I think some of us just wished the story equalled the imagery. We were set up to be blown away and were a little miffed when the film turned that corner into Aliens/Predator. But the reality is that this film was intended as a calling card much more than a narrative. And it is an incredible calling card! You'll get tons of recognition and -- I'm sure -- a few expensive power lunches out of this. I guess some of us really just wanted a simple little Batman tale. But your goal was to show off the range of your abilities -- and of your crew. That goal might have clashed with our desire to see simply a cool little Batman movie. Nonetheless, I was thrilled with your presentation of Batman. I just wanted more of him doing his thing in his element. But you made this for your own purposes and I suppose that people like me should just be grateful that there actually IS so much in it for us to appreciate. I like your Batman better than any other live-action version I've seen. I just wanted to see him in a different story. But, ultimately, I must say congratulations...and thanks!

Superzario - a good super hero costume...

    by TheTriad

...was on the live action TV show, The Flash. I didn't like the show, but that costume made John Shipp look huge without looking plastic. Also, it was a very dark red, and I agree with other posters that dark grey would look better for this classic costume. I'm not sure how they made that suit, but I remember reading that it required a cooling system - there were no visible seams, and the fake muscles were well defined and shadowed. There is a small picture at http://www.toyotter.com/sp/tvflash.html

    by LeoO

One of the cool things about the comic book Batman that no movie has replicated is that he has no pupils or irises, just blank white eyes. It's creepy as heel, but still allows him to be expressive in a way that goggles (white triangles built in to a cowl) wouldn't. Seeing his pupils and irises makes it seems far less comic book style.

Yes, I demand a reasonable ending for any narrative, be it a feature film, short film, whatever. All stories should have a beginning, middle and an end. Exposition, climax, resolution. This was an exercise in filmmaking and nothing more. It is fine viewed as such, but claims that this is the best Batman everyone has seen is laughable. The dude did nothing but spout off a couple of lines and throw some Bat-a-rangs. Please. Everyone is so eager to give the middle finger to Hollywood that they don't even care if the product they support is actually worth hyping up. This WASN'T. It's of mild interest, got stupid with the Alien/Predator angle and that's all there is to it. Any of the episodes of the animated series is better than this film. Just because BATMAN: DEAD END didn't piss us off and make us cry in agony like BATMAN AND ROBIN did, doesn't make it great. Just because SUPERMAN III didn't suck balls like SUPERMAN IV did doesn't make it great, just less annoying. A noble effort, but I saw nothing in this film that would make me think anyone involved would be the ideal for a new Batman flick. This is fan fic run rampant and with a budget. Oooh aaahhh. Pfft!

    by DettaVen

This short is all-in-all amazing with the exception of the acting. BUT, if we had half decent actors willing to tackle the Hollywood money juggernaut, then we'd have a whole film instead of a short. The concept is still beautiful. P.S. it is on Kazaa

    Just a couple of words....

    by maceodkat

After watching this thing 3 times, 1 back to back and then I had to take a breather to let it all sink in before I watched it again. This is a very simple no fat short that delivers the hype that the boys here at AICN said it was. This director needs to helm this product. I'm not saying we need a Batman vs. Pred/Alien movie just yet, but seeing those two baddies sharing the same screen time does say one thing, PRED VS ALIEN NEEDS TO BE DONE PROPER SYTLE. But this guy deserves a shot at making a honest Batman movie. He has a good look coming into a Prequel type of deal, but who cares. Burton stuff was wicked, but not anywhere close to gospel. The pantsmoker that made the rest of the films needs to be shot. No double villian crap anymore, and please, make it snappy. We not getting any younger. - mace out

    by IndustryKiller

God that was wretched. The costumes, the acting, the atmosphere, the camerawork, the mother fucking Predator!! I wouldnt even care if htis wasnt advertised as the second coming. Every frame of either Burton film is lightyears beyond this even in terms of concept. If thats what a cloth Batman costume could look like count me the fuck out. They could have at least gotten a guy that slightly resembled Batmans body type. The guy looks like he can barely move on account of his absurdly oversized muscles. He voice is equally terrible. The guy who plays the Joker wines far more than he is even slightly menacing. After punching Batman he says "What's wrong? Can't take a joke? I'd love to know where they found the writers of the original 60's series to write this. And then the fucking aliens and Predator show up. I mean Jesus Christ if they had any credibility at all it flew out the window then. If you were gonna go through all this trouble why nt at least try to make it semi serious. The filmmaking was also bad. I mean I suppose on a budget of nothing it was ok and I don't want to knock an up and comer but these shots where just stock Batman schtick, I could have done that in my sleep.

  • July 21, 2003, 11:14 p.m. CST

So somebody made a Batman v. Predator short...

    by Delete Me

...using a rubber Alien and the old Adam West costume and without having, y'know, a plot. Give the drooling a rest, fanboys. This short gets one thing right and one thing only: the Joker's look. Having established a beautifully cinematic Joker - up against a halfassed underoos Batman (really, was this costume based on the "Arctic Batsled" action figure or something? Why is he not wearing black? Or at least some costume that doesn't make it look like he's wearing his underwear outside his pants?) - the story ditches the only visually well-realized depiction of Batman's best and most fascinating enemy to throw in that classic villain from the Batman rogues' gallery... the Predator. What the fuck? Did we not see this storyline played out much better in an actual comic series many many moons ago? God damn, you people are stupid. You'll cream your shorts over any random geek references thrown your way, no matter how half-assedly it's done. Why not just have Batman fight, say, Boba Fett? And Buffy? And have all three of them played by Bruce Campbell? Goddamn morons.

    DEAD END

    by Hairy Pottery

Hey, I just grabbed this off Kazaa, so thanks to those who are sharing it. The film is an interesting exercise, with more good stuff than bad stuff. Joker looks great, but he has awful dialogue. Batman looks like the Ross version, as many have posted already. What bugs me most is that guy-in-suit aliens usually don't look so good compared to the original. The guy who wore the suit in the first ALIEN was about eight feet tall and weighed 100 pounds or thereabouts. A normal guy wearing an alien suit looks like a fat alien. I think people are over-reacting to this film, whether they hate it or love it. It's a showoff piece, a high-budget fan fragment, an experiment. I liked it okay.

I know this is too far down the totem pole but

    by johne5

Yeah right up to when they started talking was fucking badass, shit studios spend millions to create shots like the one when Batman rises the puddle. The Joker also looked pretty good as well. But when they started talking, ehhh. It would have been better if Joker was the only one who talked while Batman answered with punches. Then out of fucking nowhere an alien grabs the joker and one attacks Batman. WTF? I started to laugh when the alien attacked Batman. Don't you want to ask yourself how the hell the aliens got to earth, and of all places Gotham City ? Then the predator, now it they had only done the predator that would have been cool, but only one of them like in the dark horse deal. Yeah it has this cool factor but the laughable factor far outweighs the cool factor by a lot. I could have lived with the predator but the aliens went way too far. The quality of the directing was awesome though, everything about besides the story was great. I'm pretty sure if there were five more minutes of that and the Borg would have appeared to assimalate Batman.

Now the cool thing about that was it gave me the whole "T-1000 rising from the checkered tile" vibe to it. When Joker went up I was thinking, what the F**K?!? And then the Alien showed up and I new now it was one of THOSE movies. Another nerdgasm came when I saw the signature laser marks of the Predator. On a final note the final shot looked like it could be a basis of an entire movie itself. Batman vs. Predators vs. Aliens sounds like a great movie idea, it all around rocks.

The alley scene from Burton's Batman smokes this crap by a mile

    by Son Of Batboy

Having spent almost 3 hours downloading this on my shitty dialup I can confidently say the HYPE on this DID NOT PAY OFF!!! The people claiming this flick as something amazing were either dropped as babies or have yet to reach the 6th grade. There's nothing original or truly creative about this. They shoveled a lot of money into a short film that essentially demonstrates they are good at copying other people's work. If I were in an exec and saw this I'd say "Nice, but what can YOU create?" They should have put some effort into creating their own material. The mishmash of characters aside, all of this has already been done. They used the same music, recreated the costumes, used similar art direction and lighting as previous movies, even the style in which it was made wasn't compelling. Sure, it was worth a laugh but its nothing inspired. The little amount dialogue that was present was a riff on the "You made me!" scene of Burton's Batman. Even the actor playing Batman delivered it in Keaton's Dirty Harryish style. This was no film "made for the fans" on a shoe string budget. Even at the end of the credits it says "made for promotional use by the filmmakers" They're looking to score another gig, that's all. They even had a CATERER for christ's sake! For people with the amount of resources they have, they really should stop watching so many films, read more and find their own voice, one that hasn't already been spoken for.

    Fanboys Will Bitch About ANYTHING

    by Saluki

The fact that people are actually taking this seriously makes me weep for the human race. I loved it for EXACTLY what it was, a REAL Batman going all out on the Darkhorse Batman vs Predator mini-series, one of my favorite Bat stories. Two warriors that are just not going to give up until one is DEAD. The cinematography was tits, and the music played out ALL the right notes. The fact that people couldn't even enjoy the homage to the end of the first Predator (Where the cast is shown one by one during the credits) SICKENS me. Your not fans guys. You people striving for a story that wasn't there.

    by FNORDknt

LOVED the Bandages on his stomach and hands. The harley quinn reference (How Joker escaped). The you created me line (Reference to the Burton batman). I loved how the Bat's attacked the predator first, and his high tech metals are more high tech then THE PREDATORS. This short rocked, all the Batman movies sucked ballz...They were directed by studios, don't forget that...

This thing is crazy, just saw it on Superherohype.com. Batman looks like he should, Joker looks like he should. For those that dont want to know...SPOLIERS,SPOILERS ahead... The Aliens and the Predators look real good, this isn't crappy small budget stuff done in someones garage, they look good. I just wish the thing was longer.

loved the 'year zero' look for bats. loved the look of the joker. (jack nicholson ? please !) loved the dark horse crossover thing: alright it's a bit rich for a short, but the guy is trying to get noticed and on the strength of this i think he deserves to be! i thought the joker's dialogue needed a re-write, it just didn't sound like natural speech but come on guys - this little movie is great entertainment and it didn't cost any of you a cent. if this team doesn't go on to get a proper feature budget then there really is no justice in hollywood. which of course there isn't.

    Man Behind The Mask

    by WILPOWER

The guy who played Batman in the short film is a fitness model turned actor named Clark Bartram. He has appeared several times in the magazine American Health & Fitness (soon to change title to AHF). Issue 18, which is about to begin production, will feature a pic of this new Batman in the gym so you can see how amazing this guy's physique really is. The photo will appear in the Scoop section of AHF. The bad news is that you'll have to wait to November 11th to see it on newwstands. If you can't wait, issue 17 (on newsstand September 9th with Shemar Moore from the WB's Birds of Prey on the cover) has a back training article featuring Clark Bartram as well. Isn't it funny that the guy playing Batman is named Clark? And Bartram is really close to Batman. Weird. How do I know all this? I'm the art director for the magazine!

    batman dead end

    by axemaniac

Just got Dead End from Theforce.net and its Awsome!! You guys slaggin' off the Joker, have you ever actually read a Batman comic? Come on, this is how he's supposed to be! OK the Alien/Predator stuff is a little forced in there but the guy is obviously showcasing his film making ability. I never thought a live action Batman would look good in the stretch bodysuit but I was wrong, anyone complaining about the real world logistics of fighting crime in a cape and tights should not be watching fantasy type films, I can get the real world outside my front door! Ever heard of 'suspension of disbeleif'? Mr Bartram looks EXACTLY like the early comics version, plus the voices sounded like they should, even the dodgy dialogue sums up the relationship between Bats and Napier! Grim, Gritty and Dark, just like Batman films and Batman himself should be!

    by Blue_In_The_Face

I cannot believe the coolness of the movie. Those who remember the Batman cross-over from the early 90s know what I'm talking about! WB needs to hire the director and the cast from this short film. To be honest, I feel like throwing away my 1990 Batman DVD and just keep watching and whatching and watching this film in my computer. Holy shit! It rocks!

Whatever. A true Batman fan would clamor for a serious and realistic take on the Batman mythos, not some stupid fan boy crossover crap. This film chucked everything it had going for it the minute the Alien and Predators showed up. Feh.

"Obviously if you don't like this film you are an idiot."

    by DarthHomercles

Obviously? Sorry, I didn't realize that this five minute exercise in technique was the barometer of good taste. Excuse me for expecting quality from entertainment. The film had good atmosphere and some cool shots in the beginning. The Batman/Joker stuff was building to something possibly of interest, but all that was chucked, again I say!, for stupid fan boy crossover crap. Who gives a flying flip about Batman vs. Aliens vs. Predators? This isn't Batman. This is nerd poo. This film quickly became what all previous incarnations of filmed Batman became: clunky action mixed with a serious lack of logic or emotion. Sorry. Nice try, but this guy was showing off, not telling a compelling story. As a calling card, it's very good. As a movie to rival all previous incarnations of Batman, whatever. It's nothing special. This is being viewed at comic conventions and should stay there. You guys will hype anything. Ain't it cool?

Just watched it thanks to BT.. um... interesting. The editing and costuming make it look like a low-budget student-film. The appearance of Aliens and Predadors is bizarre and kinda dumb. batman-dead end....DEAD WRONG!!!

    by mr-tibbs

Well, for all of you who are still trying to find the film, you can download it at superherohype.com. But I have to say I've never been more disapointing then I was when I watched this so called perfect batman film. To be honest it's crap!! The script is cringe worthy and even steals lines ("you made me") from Burtons Batman. The end of film fight sequence which pits Batman against a mystery villian (i won't spoil the surprise!!) Batman moans and groans like some sort of third rate wrestler (and to honest looks a little like one as well) And as for that villian, some things that work in the comics do NOT work in film. They become riduculous. Bottom line this film is fun sure and yes batman looks cool and god yes it's better than Schumachers films times a hundred, but no it is NOT batman as he was truly meant to be seen, it's certainly not better than Burtons or Warner's animated series. As for the another cinematic Batman, my money still on Nolan.

How do you people think...give these guys a break. The film does a wonderful job portraying The Batman as a real person...if you got hit by the Predator wouldn't you grunt? Lets be real for a moment, in this world of make believe. Some of you are so drawn into this world you think it's for real. How could any human actor look like a comic book character? That's why we love these fictional characters so much, because no human can live up to this representation of who this person is. Lets all try to remember that this is all done for the fan and we may not all agree on the script, the characters, the acting, the direction...this is a really good film and a ton of work went into making it for all of you boneheads to sit around and tear apart. has anything ever been on this site that everyone agrees on? NO!

The Good, The Bad, and What the $@%#?!?!

    by Mr.Toast

Watched it a couple of times now... THE GOOD: A classic looking Batman - loved it! The Joker - whoa! Spooky, crazed, insane, and just EVIL! The asylum jacket was fabulous. Someone compared it to The Killing Joke version, which was dead on IMHO. Nice and dark with the music adding to the ominous tone. I thought the pacing was very well done. Batman leaping into the alley and landing in that oh-so classic hero stance and then the cut to him slowly rising in the alley with his cape ascending like some sort of shadow rising out of the concrete was fantastic and outright creepy. The scene in the alley was great, that was until... THE BAD: This movie had me hooked right up until the Alien showed up, choked the shit out of the Joker and then bolted up the building. The reaction from Batman was actually fairly well done. The fight with the alien was simply SILLY and became ever more SILLY with the fight against the Predator. The film up to just before the Alien showed up: 9/10 The film as the alien shows up: 2/10

Its like when you were at school and did something particularly cool, there was always someone, or a group of someones ready and waiting to jeer at you and put you down. The reason? I know its amatuerish in parts with stilted dialogue and wooden delivery, but hey!, they couldn't afford Christian Bale... Not sure about all the excitement.

    by xyling

Good photography, good lighting. Nice locations and costumes, but beyond that, really- is it all anything clever? Don't want to write any spoilers, someone already did that for me...The characters introduced is an interesting surprise, but they just fight. There is no ending because there is no story, uh who wins? Do we really care so much? Is it trying to be humor, if it is, where is the punchline, like Darth Maul appears at the end or Godzilla's foot smashes the who bunch. Good cinematography but awful story, they'll do well as a director in American cinema where a studios just make new versions of old movies, old tv shows, make cartoons out of old movies or new movies out of old cartoons. And Batgrl, your fdad did a nice job for his role and would be a great candidate for a feature length Batman movie. You really should practice typing using legible grammar though and people will show you more respect.

    Dead End review...

    by Imperator

Well, I have seen the film. I don't know what all you fan-boys were creamin' your pants about. Yeah, Dead end was cool, but NOT this fantastic end-all, be-all vision of the Bat. SPOILERS BELOW, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED: First, Batman's costume was embarrassing. What was Bats going to? A pajama party? The leather cape and gloves, black boots, and rubber cowl were cool. But those elements were the thing that saved the costume from the cheesy sillines of the campy 60s Batman suit. The light-gray cloth, screen-printed symbol, and black "tighty whities" were ridiculous. This suit does avoid some of the heaviness and constriction of the Burton Bat suit, but it is ridiculous to think that Batman would put on a suit that not only makes him laughable but provides no protection (as evidenced by the slash across his midsection). Second, while Clark Bartram may be a fantastic physical build for Batman, his acting leaves something to be desired. When Batman tells Joker, "You're pathetic.", I cringed. I've got knews for you Clark, the delivery of that line was pathetic. Next, the Joker. While the physical look of the Joker was pulled off to a tee, the acting was even worse than Bartram's. When Joker whines about Batman not taking responsibility I said, "Boo-hoo." Joker came across as more of a whiny spoiled punk than a murderous psychotic. Last but not least, the inclusion of both the Predators and Aliens in the film. One of the primary criticisms of all the other Bat features is that they unnecessarily take away attention from the Bat. Well here is yet another exhibit of that problem. Throwing in just ONE predator would have been cool, but not mulitple predators and aliens. Don't believe the hype people. Especially from someone who is so excited he is popping blood vessels in his head. As an exhibition of this director's skills, it works. But the definitive version of the Batman on film IT IS NOT. The live-action Batman film that gets all the elements right still does not exist.

It's not supposed to have a story you pansy. It's 6 minutes of Batman-style action. Is Batman supposed to have tea and discuss the meaning of life now that we know that we're not alone with the Predator? There wasn't any time or budget(most likely) to do anything other than fight, so stop your nitpicking of a demo reel.

Real mature. I offer criticism, and some praise, for a film that so many are creamin' their pants over. You definitely fit that latter category. And "supposed" to be "pull-on" pajamas is your interpretation. In my view, a real Batman would combine the lightness and maneuverablility of the Dead End suit with the uni-tone coloring and armor of the Burton suit. This makes sense, given Batman's need to fight and yet still be protected against things like being slashed across the middle by the Predator's knives. The whole point of the "suits of armor room" in the first Burton Batman illustrates this. Batman is a warrior whose suit would serve both stylistic and functional purposes, armor protection being one. Not to mention the whole black "tighty whities" would make enemies laugh rather than tremble in fear. Here is an idea, instead of labeling people moron because they offer reasoned opinions in opposition to yours, engage your brain to think and then write a reply with reasoning instead of petty insults. And you cannot label a film the definitve version of Batman, when it features just as much on aliens and predators as it does the Bat.

that doesn't take away from the fact that that the director used what resources he had and used them to optimum effect. Elfman's, Horner's, and Silvestri's scores were well edited together, Boner made an excellent Joker, and the film editing was outstanding.

well now since ive read spoilers already on this talkback, let me put in my two cents. I think the way this director pulled this stuff off on a non-hollywood type budget is very impressive. I do agree that the acting is a little silly and the addition of Predators and aliens comes off a bit ridiculous, but you cannot deny the passion of this director and how he feels he can try to rebuild the batman "Clooney-Blows" franchise. Its worth a shot isnt it?

    by ThingsThatTimDog

I agree with everybody else that the film was fairly enjoyable until the characters started talking, but when the alien showed up it just turned uber dumb. And then the Predator shows up and proves that yes indeed the film could have gotten dumberer.****I say this in all serious, "The film would have been better with Hulk Hogan playing Bane. I got your cape and cowl right here brother." Seriously, if they wanted to impress somebody they should have had Bane and Bats beating the shit out of each other for 10 minutes instead of a damn Predator show up. Damn!

I couldn't agree more that we have yet to see a REAL,ass-kicking Batman movie. And, sadly we still havn't. Sandy Collora (who has burned a bridge everywhere he has ever worked in LA, and was fired from Stan Winston's), desperate to make some kind of entry into the Directing field has hashed together a laughable little ditty of such amateurish sensibilities I am astounded anyone had anything positive to say about it at all! Batman looks like the old Adam West suit with a rubber cape. The Joker is wearing my Grand mother's nighty and the staging, editing, acting, and dialogue is below the film school level. Only his experience in makeup effects allowed him to create a Joker Makeup that looks acceptable. Please people, in the name of good taste be REASONABLE!!!

Guess they think Freddy vs Jason is going to be big so they are trying to rape Batman in the ass once again by cashing in on it. They should just do Batman vs Jason if they're going to do this. At least they're both owned by AOL. >> Jason stows away on a boat carrying some graduating teens as they cruise to Gotham! Jason dispatches the teens in order and washes up on the Gotham docks and proceeds to install his brand of justice upon the crackheads, rapists, ravers, hookers, hippies, democrats and anyone else who has sex or thinks about sex in Gotham. Batman feels Jason is making him look like a pussy so he plans to take him down. It's the feel good movie of the year!

The Troops are called to the Lars homestead after Owen smacks Beru up a little bit. This is serious drama folks. There's just no pleasing some people...

    by thebatman

#1) The bat-suit looks primitive because it's supposed to. Take a look at the early comic books. Also, it's just like the Frank Miller Year One version. #2) The Joker's wearing a straight jacket, and looks just like he did before Hollywood ever got hold of him, yellow teeth and all. And I think the "joke" he referred to was the brass knuckles. #3) I understand the Bats-vs-Pred-vs-Alien does have a history in the comic books. Sure, it's a left turn. But no sillier than re-naming Catwoman's Selina Kyle to Patience Price. #4) It's only a short (~7 minutes?) How much story can YOU present in that amount of time? I think they got a lot done in a short amount of time. #5) Sure, there are some holes. But it shows a lot more faith to the source material then any of the other versions. It's the only one that hasn't "re-imagined" it somehow. (At least as far as Bats and Mr J go...) The hype I've seen appears mainly based on faithfullness to the source material versus the crap that Warner's have been cranking out. Warner's can't seem to just write the stories within the framework of the source material. They have to make changes and put their stamp on it. Which 9 times out of ten results in crap. #6) In the original comic book, Bruce Wayne was not a huge guy. That's part of the reason for the suit in the first place. No one was afraid of him. #7) Both main actors did a fine job. It's a comic book, for crying out loud! What were you looking for, Shakespeare? #8) As far as the suit realism complaints, the assumption of a very sophisiticated bat-suit assumes that it occurs in somewhere close to present day. There's nothing in there to suggest that it doesn't happen, say, in the 1940's sometime. No Kevlar back then. The suit itself is light cloth. In any martial art, mobility is everything. Body armor cuts down on speed and mobility. And to paraphrase Mr. Miyagi, the best defense is not to be there when the punch lands.

I happen to love Batman myself, have since I can remember.... but my enjoyment of that character ends when it makes me cyberscream the F word at compleat strangers. My rage and vulgarity wouldn't be wasted on trival things, there is more than enough things to hate people for beyond a comic book character. People who warrant a good dose of outrage for their actions. And I like to believe that could be metted out very effectively with a rolled up extra large Batman comic. Live Well, BRAD

    by axemaniac

I wonder if someone who only watches the Batman movies of the past 12 years or so but has never read a comic book calls themselves a 'Batman fan'? There are a lot of rumbling about this so-called 'pyjama suit' being shitty and impractical and comparisons to the Adam West suit. Personally I detest that pile of camp old bollocks, but the costume was closer to the comic in many ways than these WB movies! Anyway I just wanted to say that the costume is SUPPOSED to look like that! Bloody hell!

Just saw it. Very, very impressive

    by DukeDeMondo

Yes, i downloaded this noirish ejaculation of fan-boy psyche, and it is fantastic. Utterly fantastic. To be honest, i don't see that the tone of the piece is all that far removed from Burton's second entry in the series. It certainly wouldn't cost too much to get from Batman Returns to Dead End in a taxi, anyhow. I didn't know anything about it before i saw it, other than Batman and the Joker have a punchup, so obviously the ending was quite a suprise. Or was that the second half? Y'see, herein lies the problem in comparing this to the features. It is a lot easier, as others have pointed out, to create a stunning eight minute montage of fight sequences and crowd-pleasing cameo appearances than it is to sustain such bravado for two hours. On another note, should the proposed ever-delayed Aronofsky opus get off the ground, then i would hope it will have something of the spirit of Dead End. Aronofsky, on quite a different matter, is surely one of the most over-rated directors in Hollywood. Pi was fantastic without a doubt, but Requiem For A Dream was turgid, shallow, empty Movie-Of-The-Week puss. Anyhow, i have no more to say on the matter, and while masturbate towards oblivion for the remainder of the evening.

I hadn't read any of the spoilers to the movie so when i saw the twist my jaw completely dropped. The Aliens looked like garbage, which is theoretically ok because it was a low-budget indy film. While the Predator costumes were real, they still acted like shit, because again, there's not much you can do on a low-budget indy fan pic. Now, as for Batman, the guy looked alright but i almost diarhea-ed after I saw his really crappy costume. Again, low-budget movie (and if that wasn't the reason then Sandy Cofax or whatever was obviously not trying hard enough). The Joker and their little talk made me vomit in rage. I doubt anyone will be able to do it as well as Jack or Mark, and anyone saying that Chekov's kid could do it better or just as well doesn't get out enough. So whatever, what can you do, it's done. As much as he's the detective I've always thought of ol' Batsy as much more martial artsy and was pretty dissappointed by the Predator-Bat fight. But again low-budget, and I already said that the whole thing was pretty lame-o, even though I enjoyed the first AvB comics-mini-series. The only good part was him standing after the jump off the building, that was savage.
