Altoids Girl Appraises The WB

Published at:  Jul 13, 2003 5:46:36 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Fearless” was going to air 9 p.m. Tuesdays, but the WB recently surprised everyone by pushing it back to midseason.
Word is they fired all the show’s writers on Friday and
shut down production. “One Tree Hill” will now follow “Gilmore Girls.”

Our first two reviews of “Fearless” pointed out more than a few problems. One reviewer said the show “frequently strains credibility” and “will draw a lot of comparisons to ‘Alias’ because of its premise, but right now it's more on par with ‘Dark Angel’ in terms of quality.” The other called it “crap.”

Here’s “Altoids Girl” with more lowdown:

Gaia More is a teenage girl that lacks the 'fear' gene, after an
opening
sequence where she explains to us that she doesn't have this gene,
yada,
yada, yada, she then explains that she can't tell anyone because they
wouldn't understand, and then they would look at her wierd and treat
her
differently. Why? I dunno, maybe she lives in a world where "fear" is
all
cool and shit. Beats me. She works for the
FBI as part of an elite youth-based undercover section that's
responsible to
infiltrate "youth-based" criminal organizations. She meets up with her
new
partners Harmony Kay and Ryan Brady, two other youth operatives that
apparently would hate her if they knew her 'secret'. Angst, angst,
angst,
one introduction of hacker-cum-love interest (in the form of 'Jordan
Gray')
and rave-dance club fight scene later and we have the beginnings of a
new
teen show.

First things first: it wasn't heinously bad. Which sucks for me,
because the
worse it is, more snark I can employ. It has some stilted dialogue,
some
wierd character moments and a gag-inducing reason for angst. It's
stylish,
that's for damn sure, and Rachel Leigh Cook manages to convey
cockiness and
(get this) fearlessness that's actually kind of cool. The fight scenes
are
fun, and everyone fulfills their roll fine.

My gigantic issue, then, that keeps me from enjoying fully the damn
thing is
that Gaia's main reason to angst is that she's afraid that her
partner's
wont trust her if they knew the 'truth'. The truth being that she
doesn't
have that damn fear gene. Excuse me? Is it that big of a deal? Will she
be
shunned if they knew the truth, forced to drink from a different
drinking
fountain? Whuh?

They eventually find out and the camera pulls back as they look
determined
and ready to face the future...together.

*yawn*

So it wasn't that bad, certainly better than expected. It's got a hot,
competent cast, a small following, and it's going to be on the WB, so I
see
at least one season in its future.

I am – Hercules!!

Rachael Leigh Cook seriously needs a new agent...

    by jimmy jazz

she's cute and charismatic, but they keeping putting her in the crapiest crapfests this side of Tori Spelling straight-to-video hell. This show seems to keep this trend going. When are they going to put her in something good? Having said that, I still think that Josie and the Pussycats was a sorely underrated movie. It has found a new lif on video and cable, so I think it's only a matter of time before it is appreciated for the clever spoof on modern entertainment and pop culture that it is.

    Problem with Concept

    by jackbristow

Fear is a very neccessary gene. We know our limits because of fear. Due to fear, we make better and safer decisions. Without fear, you won't know when to stop and you'll take unneccessary risks.

    Fearless/One Tree Hill

    by electric_monk

Fearless is based on a Young Adult line of books. My guess is the show was suppose to appeal to the young girls who read the series of books -but since I work part time at Borders, I don't know who they are. I've never sold a copy before. Anyway, the whole concept seemed silly -an young FBI girl without a fear gene. Still, it might've worked. Gilmore Girls has a loyal following -women and gay men. Fearless might've gotten the women, but I'm sure the gay men will change channels. With One Tree Hill with the way too pretty Chad Michael Murray, maybe those gay men will stay? Who knows, I mean now that "Jane" has been dropped from the new "Tarzan and Jane" series, who do think the WB is going after? Travis Fimmel already has a fairly large following of gay men, so dropping the "Jane" will ensure some will watch -beyond the obvious women auidence. Now that Fearless has be shoved to midseason, my guess is the either show will succeed in winter or they have no faith in One Tree Hill (God, I hope they don't use the U2 song of the same name). Either way, does anyone really care?

Fear Gene? Umm . . . Somebody Needs to Take a Science Class

    by shutuprob

... 'cause there ain't no fear gene. Fear response (y'know, the fight-or-flight instinct) is located in an area of the brain called the amygdala. It's somewhat connected to production of adrenaline (aka epinephrine). Of course, I'm not a med student (much less a doctor), but what were they *thinking,* basing a relatively realistic show on such unscientific malarkey?

I know this, you know this, because we are thinking individuals (no "fear gene"). Remember however, that this is from a series of "young adult" novels. Meaning it's used to sell the ridiculous concept of "girl power" to teenage girls. Ever since Buffy, there have been numerous attempts to cash in on this concept that a little tiny girl can kick ass, and there always has to be some "special" (bizarre) reason as opposed to really being able to kick ass. (Divine providence = Buffy, Spy Training = Alias, Genetic Modification = Dark Angel). Either that, or it's an excuse so that these little tiny hot girls can be total ass-kickers without the necessity for any serious kinds of muscle and fight training (although I don't watch Alias, so I don't really know what Garner looks like so perhaps I'm wrong there).

What the hell is there to "flesh out" ? It's (arguably) network TV, not rocket science. Here's how to turn it into a hit: Cut it from an hour to 1/2 hour, and make it a dramedy. "Flesh out" RLC - preferably with that bikini she wore in the FHM spread. Instead of making her a cop or whatever, make her the checkout girl at a Walmart a la "The Good Girl". Make "Fearless" to refer to the fact she is a nympho and not afraid to perform any sexual act, no matter how depraved. Throw in Flip Wilson and that Balki guy as her gay neighbors and make her live on the same block with the Big Brother house, and you've got ratings GOLD baby, guaranteed.

An entire premise falls apart because of the audience's intelligence. Let's hope that was the reason for pulling the writers.

    Fearless

    by templar

Hang on, let me get this straight, the character doesnt possess the gene
for fear but at the same time she is
afraid that her little friends wont
find out that she a genetic freak.
    Shit WB must be desperate.
    Boggles the mind.

The "Hot Chick Who Kicks Ass" genre needs to DIE.

    by sherlock_holmes_

Seriously. If they want to impress me, they could have a series featuring a woman with some REAL physical training, some muscle, and a body weight somewhere above 100 pounds. It's like with Wonder Woman- WB keeps mentioning really AWFUL choices to play her. They suggest Sandra Bullock, they mention Sarah Michelle Gellar or Jennifer Love Hugetits, they toss around the idea of Jen Garner, Shannon Elizabeth or Jen Connelly in the Wonder Woman costume... And those ALL suck! They want a super ass-kicking amazon that doesn't look like an amazon, but instead looks like a starving runway model. I want my female heroines to be BUFF, baby! They have to at least look like Linda Hamilton did in T2... I'm not saying Joanie "Chyna" Laurer should be in those roles, but you can strike a balance between toned and classically pretty. I thought Lucy Lawless did the ass-kicking role pretty convincingly, but that's because she's tall and in-shape. She's a stunt woman! She's got muscles! Sarah Michelle Gellar looks like she could barely support herself on those stick-legs! I'm SICK SICK SICK of seeing anorexic babes trying to do cheap kung-fu moves on TV and in movies! They AREN'T sexy. They AREN'T convincing. They aren't doing us any favors by making us watch tragically malnourished bimbos beat up guys three times their size with amateruish moves. Somebody FIX this!
