So is KILL BILL really going to be 2 movies this Fall'

Published at:  Jul 11, 2003 6:44:51 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I've been getting tons of email regarding a story that has appeared on Entertainment Weekly's website regarding Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL being divided into two films for release this Fall.

Well, that's what David Carradine said quite some time ago and was denied by all involved at the time. Well, apparently it is under serious consideration. I'm hearing that Quentin is wanting it to come out as KILL BILL Volume 1 and KILL BILL Volume 2, as he has completely thought of this as being a cinematic book in many ways.

So what's the lowdown? I hear that no matter what we'll be getting a Quentin Tarantino film released on OCTOBER 10th, and I hear that some time after that we'll probably be getting another one. What's interesting about this for me is that as far as I know, this is the first time that a major Hollywood film has done this since CLEOPATRA, however... Stephen Chow did this back in 1994 with the amazing CHINESE ODYSSEY and CHINESE ODYSSEY PART TWO --- You really must get your hands on those two.

When will we get official news on this? I'm not sure... there's a big KILL BILL thingee happening at San Diego Comic Con this coming weekend and if there's a chance of it breaking officially, that's probably where it will get unleashed. No matter what, I'm happy as can be, because this means we're not going to get some insanely truncated version of the film in theaters and two it means we won't have to buy Depends either. I just wonder if he'll leave us at a cliffhanger or if he's re-working things a bit to provide an easy exit and a great opening for a second film... Wish I read Chinese or Japanese characters... that's the only format I have for the two copies of the shooting script I have. Want to read the SUPERMAN speech dammit! Want to read Sam Jackson's dialogue in the church! Can't Wait... Any... Longer... Must... See... Movie... Now!

  • What a poseur. First he remakes "City on Fire" with no credit to the original, then he adopts a "suburban gangsta" persona, now he's hopping aboard the "to be continued..." train. What's next, a line of action figures? Oh, too late...

Look, I would rather have a three-hour film than wait around for two, hour and a half films. It's basically set up like this: Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. While Pulp was grand at three hours, Dogs was grand at an hour and a half. Either ay, lets just hope Miramax lets the decision fall into the hands of Tarantino.

I'd gladly wait an extra month to see the complete un-edited version of Kill Bill that Tarantino envisioned, yes, even if I have to py an extra $5, and yes, even if a few jackasses start to think Tarantino has "gone mainstream".

    by el duderino

I believe that's three full weeks that Kill Bill could be number one! Sure, for the past four years no film has prospered that fell around the 9th, 10th or 11th of October (Fight Club, From Hell, EVERYTHING released last year on the 10th), but luckily I have a strong enough faith in audiences to REJECT The Whole Ten Yards in favor of Kill Bill. There's no way in hell that a sequel to a bland comedy whose name makes absolutely no damn sense can overtake good ol' Quentin Chop Sockey. 1 film, 2 films? No difference. The first volume will thrive for those three weeks, there's no competition to fight it off! Just check out Dark Horizons release list (not quite up-to-date, but close enough, sans the Whole Ten Yards move to 10-10-03) and see if any of those titles looks like they can hold off Kill Bill. Hell, it doesn't even matter if Kill Bill is even a GREAT FLICK! The film will still kick ass three weeks after opening!

All this talk about massive reshoots, drastic revisions, and being pulled from Cannes... here's hoping things are going hunky dori (sp?) over by Quentin's neck of the woods. I still can't believe today's news blip... can anyone just split their film into two pieces without massively screwing the structure of both stories? Perhaps that's what the reshoots were for... anywho, I think it is time that Harry picked up the receiver for his special white phone that can reach Quentin at any time, any place, just so he can confirm with Mr. Gecko himself... (sorry for all the ellipses...)

I think everybody who took part in Reloaded felt shat upon, and continue to feel shat upon, after the fairly large group of people who left theaters disappointed on May 15th. I wonder how this has impacted post-production for the next film. Has the main site revealed anything else about the plot to the upcoming film, etc? I'm pretty certain that zero-g fighting is in it, and perhaps that's the action centerpiece that cost 40 million alone to shoot. Other than that, is anything matrix related coming out between now and then? God, it seems like there was such a huge saturation of matrix-related crap in May and June, but it's completely died down now. No more games, tie-ins, etc?

All those karatee punches and no one gets hurt? It leaves the feeling that I'd be OK taking a bunch of Neo kicks to the face and be OK. So now KB is going to kick everyone silly, toss people out windows, slice them up, and you know you won't really care. The Hulk vs. dogs, now that was some serious ass-kicking! Good ole' vicious street fighting! And Arnie vs. the woman in the bathroom? Baboom!! Give me some more of that. Stick the karatee in your potty.

As I read in EW,the scipt is 197 pages. That doesn't mean the film will be 197 minutes(or just over 3 hours)long.A short action sequence could take up pages. And I imagine QT is pretty fucking descriptive.QT could go the LOTR route and put a longer version on DVD.Though I doubt that that would be his first choice.Hell,I don't know the guy.If Harry's so chummy with him,why doesn't he know?Aw screw it.I'll see it either way.But I'd rather see it all at once.

QT has yet to make a bad movie....

    by dolemite_fan

and his last two films were both masterpieces. I don't expect KILL BILL to be a masterpiece because it's silly to go into a film, any film, with that expectation, but I do expect something great and I believe we will get that, if you're into these types of movies. Is this his APOCALYPSE NOW? If that means it's going to be great, bring it on--now! I would actually rather pay to see it once, then come back and see the super extended version, then having to wait for the dvd, where they sell a "theatrical cut" or "uncut" because that's just dirty to me. My idea is that KILL BILL is going to have problems with the MPAA, and releasing an "unrated" version in theatres could be the answer, but I do not know because he did shoot over 500,000 feet of film....

one for the price of two!

    by johnnybarrett

This is EXACTLY what happened with Richard Lester's Musketeer films and those were pretty solid. I think the films should be called 1) LOOKING FOR BILL and 2) KILLING BILL or 1) WHERE"S BILL? and 2) I FOUND THAT BITCH, NOW I'M GONNA KILL HIS ASS! If they're breaking this into 2 films, imagine how many films they'll break QT's war epic into. Four? Five? As some kind of insane gimmick, I think some theatres should secretly play volume 1 and 2 together on opening night to blow people's minds. And, to keep Harry happy, they can pass out Depends at the door.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I just have to say that while City on Fire provided a basic gimmick (and a variation of the showdown at the end, which is standard John Woo/Ringo Lam/Tsui Hark fare), THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIES! Tarantino did a genius riff on the basic City on Fire plot (which is a good film in it's own right, though not Reservoir Dogs' good). See the fuckin' movie before you spout off on something you heard about as if you're an authority.

    by jules windex

Frankly, if they went ahead and released 2 films, I'd be fine with it, as long as the story was deserving of being spread across 2 films. Matrix Reloaded didn't even have enough going on to warrant HALF a film, let alone a 2 hour+ one. But you realease 2 films, you can get twice the money.

    Harry? About "Cleopatra"...

    by ed_wood_jr

I could be wrong, but my understanding was that "Cleopatra" was *not* split into two films, although it was toyed with as an idea for a while to break it up into a "Caesar & Cleopatra" film and a "Antony & Cleopatra" follow-up, but this idea was rejected as everyone began to understand that the film moviegoers most wanted to see was the second one, due to the infamous affair on the set Elizabeth Taylor was having with her Marc Antony, Richard Burton. Just my two cents...

As for the ones who call him a hack and in the same breath lionize the Wachowskis, well in another post in another talkback I mentioned the word irony. This movie will be at worst decent, at best Pul Fiction meets John Woo meets Crouching Tiget Ang Lee. Frustrating to know that several of the posters on this site have never seen any of these movies except on their puter since they are too young to rent the vids or be admitted to the theater. Unfortunately that frustration leads tthem to vent most offensively about things they just have not got the reference-base to like. I think why Quentin alienates some fans, as does Kevin Smith, is the pop-culture-reference-junkie style of writing and direction they both idulge in. I have relatives, male and female, who are younger enough than me to have the gap that makes them not get some of the references, so I can imagine what a 12-15 year old would feeel waching these films, of either director but moreso with Quentin's work.

Have to say i think it will be a great film and having read the script i think alot of film fans are going to have and early xmas present. if it's half as good as it felt reading it then it will be a legend of epic proportion. Split Films & Back-to-Backers

    by cecil b demented

First, Director Joesph Manckiewicz wrote a book, "My Life with Cleopatra," in which he chronicled every twist and turn of his involvement with that film, which he suggested nearly sank 20th Century Fox. "Cleopatra" was his vision, painstakingly accurate in its artistic detail, to the point that the kindest of reviews called it a beautiful bore. It was planned as a film with an intermission like many other "big" films (e.g. Dr. Zhivago) that sought to match the success of the long-form "Gone With The Wind" film classic. If it had been made into two separate movies, it might have had a chance of recouping its $40 million price tag, but such a split was never even considered. Richard Lester got into hot water for signing a stellar cast to his Musketeer "project," which turned out to be two films instead of the one film that the stars thought they had agreed to make. In a world where three films based on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, as well as two "Matrix" sequels, were recently filmed back-to-back, it may not be necessary to fish back to the seventies or sixties for precedents. But it would be interesting to see how splitting the film into two movies would affect such production costs as cast salaries if everyone only signed onboard to make a single movie, rather than a slyly defined "project" as in the case of Lester's Musketeer case. The Rings cast and Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions crew knew up front that they were making multiple films. If the film is split without added financial incentive for its stars, they may try to change the name of the sequel to "Kill Quentin" before all the legal smoke settles. Of course, they could always release an abridged version and save the extended version for that platinum extended gift DVD set to be released later!
