DVD News For The BUFFY & FIREFLY Fans!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
December 9, 2003
thedigitalbits.com reported Thursday that this is the release date for both the comprehensive “Firefly” DVD and the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” season-five DVD.
Herc watched all three of the unaired “Firefly” installments over the weekend, and he’s here to tell you there’s not a stinker in the bunch:
* “Trash,” co-written by “Tick” mastermind Ben Edlund and rookie scribe Jose Molina, finds the Serenity crew teaming with the pretty con-artist from “Our Mrs. Reynolds” to steal a valuable antique raygun. If I’m not confusing my episodes, there’s a hilarious conversation toward the end featuring the Tams and Jayne Cobb.
* Fans of the randy Jayne will also very much enjoy “Heart of Gold,” penned by the mysterious Brent Matthews. Inara’s true feelings about Mal are explored as the gang defends a black-market whorehouse (run by one of Inara’s old companion-school pals) against a vengeful rich redneck.
* “The Message,” directed by Tim Minear from a teleplay by Minear and Joss Whedon, kicks off when Mal and Zoe find an old war buddy in their mailbox.
********
In other “Buffy”-related DVD news, “Chance,” the dark romantic comedy feature written and directed by Amber Benson (and starring Benson, James “Spike” Marsters, Andy “Lorne” Hallett and David “Mr. Mustard” Fury), is now available! Learn how to obtain your copy here!
As long as we’re plugging stuff, please note that Amber’s impossibly prolific frequent collaborator, Christopher Golden, just saw publication of “The Gathering Dark,” the fourth novel in his “Shadow Saga” series about a heroic ex-vampire. View the cover and read the prologue at www.christophergolden.com. Amber and Christopher will also have a new “Ghosts of Albion” prose novella serialized on the BBC website this month, while his new “Dr. Fate” series for DC Comics is due any minute now, and the new “Buffy” videogame he scripted, “Chaos Bleeds,” is due next month. Whew!

Season 5 DVD? That'll be the US one, not the region 2 one, then:
http://www4.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2.php?product_code=3464
Which has been out for ages.
Ha ha. -
No power in the 'verse can stop me from buying this set
-
Fucking Xbox. Some more Slayer goodies to look forward to (don't forget about last issue of FRAY in August).
-
It was fairly enjoyable, more so than most else on FOX at the time. It still was plagued by typical first-season problems, so we really never got a chance to see it hit it's stride (like Buffy did in S2 and S3, and Angel is reaching and sustaining now). Pity. I'll most likely buy the DVD since I enjoyed some episodes, and the commentaries of Joss are always amusing.
As for Buffy Season Five, it was weak. Terrific premise with the key plot-line, and two of the series best (The Gift and The Body), but for the most part it was executed poorly. And Clare Kramer was just atrocious, as was the character she played. -
You twats get Buffy DVDs way behind us, UK UK UK
-
FYI, these three episodes will air on SciFi in the UK.
-
Sure, we in the UK get the boxed sets of series a long time before the US, but there is a HEFTY price we pay for that - almost twice the price!! I wait for the US releases and get both Angel and Buffy for a little more than what the Buffy series alone costs.
However, I will say that I much prefer the UK presentation box - much smarter! -
september is when it comes out.
-
Jeez. I thought rape was outlawed in the contiguous United States. I'm sure it's a fabulous movie, but that's just highway robbery. Get it down around $25 and we might be talking.
-
But do you have syndication in the UK?
These Buffy episodes have been broadcast 4-5 or more times on US T.V., before they hit DVD. Enough so that I have no desire to buy a set(s) of a TV show that I have seen each ep 3 or so times already as is.
-
Hey, have you seen the packaging for those UK BUFFY sets? No sense of design whatsoever. The Region 1 packaging looks far superior to the UK version, which looks like something an 12-year-old did with Photoshop. Same thing with the DOCTOR WHO DVDs...Region 1 kicks Region 2's ass all along the sidewalk. Yeah, the UK got the BUFFY DVDs first...but the US saw the original broadcasts and watched Buffy sacrifice herself to stop Glory long before the Brits did...
-
yowch, $63 for DVD & poster? OK Amber, I'll do it because I want to support you as a woman artiste. Can you throw in some shirtless Spike publicity stills? + yes I will buy the Firefly DVD too. there goes my raise for this year...
-
I remember watching Firefly and I didn't think too much of it and then I saw "Out of Gas", and "Ariel (great ending), and "War Stories" and I was obsessed. Such a great show with a winning cast and brilliant scripts. They had something for each character to be doing, which cna be tough with 9 characters. Hopefully these commentaries will reveal what Joss planned regarding River and what not. Hell, if Joss' Firefly screenplay gets rejected, he should atleast post it online for us to read.****************** Canada's SPACE Station will be airing Firefly this Fall in its proper order and will air these unaired three episodes. So it looks like UK and Canada will see them on TV. Man, now we jsut need Miracles back.
-
And now. Now. And now.
-
Saw CHANCE at it's "World Premier" here in her hometown Birmingham, and it was not pretty. She was, mind you, but the film was not. Buy it if you want to support independent films or Amber's career, but DO NOT buy it for good time.
-
Buffy was still a hero instead of a snobby self obsessed bitch . we had "Fool for love" which was the last time Spike was portrayed as a bad ass on Buffy . and most importantly Angel was kicking major ass on his show in my fav storyline of all time .. u know when he goes one man army on wolfram and hart and sets dru and darla on fire .. ahh .. the good old days
-
AWESOME!
-
Firefly DVD is a tv show that got canceled, thus it has no conclusion. It would be like buying half a book or half a movie. -
I have two kids and live in a hella small apartment and still can barely make my bills...while I would love to see this film....kinda ssstttrrreeetttccchhhessss my budget a little too far...so thanks for the offer, but unless I pull some gold out of my ass it will not be happening.
-
*Buffy season 5 was cool lots happening and basically the show grew up although to some people's disgust. But THE BODY,THE GIFT,FOOL FOR LOVE great stuff.I would buy the DVD.
*Sorry Amber but "CHANCE" tops DOUBLEMEAT PLACE.You konw what i mean
* Firefly had potential and i feel sorry because it got the axe.But it will be pointless buying a half-completed season unless you are an obsessed Whedon freak which nowadays are a rare species. -
forgive me whilst I rant about the price of this film. First of all, when you get your budget to make your film you do need to allocate where your money is going. I'm talking pre, post, above the line and below. There are two ways of making money once the indie film has been made, you either sit on it and start generate word of mouth or you find a distributor and sell it outright. The latter will get you money right away but if it becomes a success all you have is bragging rights (unless you got a good lawyer to write that contract up). Apparently she's gone for the first notion and is trying to do it herself (which in my opinion is the better choice). But in order to generate word of mouth you need to get people to start watching it. Writing "critically acclaimed won't do it unless I start seeing what critics loved it and why. Next, get a trailer on that website. Get some press photos going. That website does nothing for me when it comes to generating interest. Hell, I remember when I first saw the movie ROT. It was a friend of a friend of a friend's copy (so yes it wasn't perfect in quality) but I still thought it was entertaining so I tracked down where I could find a copy. Apparently the director was making them from the one master he owned and was selling them by word of mouth. I guarantee you I didn't spend 45 bucks in the movie. And since I've turned on a friend who liked it and bought their own. Somewhere he's probably running his VCR's into the ground but he's getting his film out there. Hopefully CHANCE can get the same chance (sorry about the pun) and someone out there will be able to see the film before having to take a pricey gamble on something on a film that has no listed run time. Okay done ranting. Thanks for letting me waste some talk back space :)

I always thought that Amber was the most talented actress (second to Hannigananananan) from the Buffy stables.
It seems a shame that the likes of Dushku and Benz get a shit load of attention over her ,when let's face it although they are both easy on the eye their thesp range is as narrow as SMG's waist.
I think she should return to acting for a while, play something completely different to the often boring Tara - kick ass and then get back on the director's bean-bag. -

One drawback of the Region 2 DVDs is that they have all been overdubbed by English actors to make it sound like the action all takes place in Sunnydale, Hampshire.
Inexplicably, Giles has been given a heavy Louisiana cajun accent.
And Xander is Glaswegian. -

I could also ask, "What's the point in releasing Firefly DVDs?"
by wardog
It has quite a devoted following (not quite as fanatical as Buffy, but it was never given the chance to succeed--damn you, FOX.) Also, it had just started to grow on me before it got axed. Seeing the unaired eps and the ones I missed would be fun. Hell, if a half-season series can be released on DVD, might we not we also see Space: Above and Beyond on DVD in the future? Shit, there's got to be a market for that one as well, if they think Firefly has enough of a following. Damn it.

Hey everyone,
I have seen Chance twice and I loved the movie! It was brutally honest, witty, funny and very creative. The acting was great! Seeing Amber and James in something so different than Buffy was really fun. I didn't think the film was confusing at all. Amber has a wicked sense of humor. Some like and some don't but don't count this film out based on what 1 or 2 people say. I am a fan of Ambers but I have seen this movie with people who are not really partial to her at all and it won them over. Give it a Chance!
As far as the price goes, it's really a steal. If you'll go over to The Essence board there is an explanation by Chris Golden on why the film is the price that it is. Simple fact Amber put up most of the money to make Chance and she is doing the distributing herself. She wants her fans to see her film. She is proud and she should be. The poster that is being sold goes for about $100 or more on Ebay so the price is fair. I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy it. Buy it, don't buy but don't make it seem like Amber is ripping people off. She loves her fans more than any celebrity out there she would never be unfair to them.

I loved this show. Just loved it. And I thought the characters were great, especially Mal. He had this anti-hero, ambiguous moral thing going which I prefer in a character. More realistic. All the characters were great. I was hoping SciFi would pick it up but after screwing all the Farscape fans, I have to say I won't watch SciFi channel anymore. All their stuff is just sh*t. Maybe, just maybe, if they picked up Firefly, they'd redeem themselves, but instead we get crappy, poorly produced and weakly written amatureish, unwatchable Freak of the Week movies. So stupid! Who is the moron at SciFi Channel who decides on what original movies to produce? That idiot needs to be fired. I've never seen such total Drek, awful, corny, poorly written and produced CRAP. Sorry for the soapbox, but I'm a scifi fan and the one channel that would serve up the kind of stuff I'd like is just full of mediocre rubbish. Blech!
