DEAD ZONE 3.1!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Robert Picardo visits Johnny Smith as the gang tries to stage an intervention! Plus? We get to see the reporter in a black bikini!
TV Guide says:
Loads of trouble awaits super-seer Johnny Smith in The Dead Zone's seven-episode summer run as the psychic takes on challenges ranging from a SARS-like plague to the location of Osama bin Laden. But first up is an exciting whirlwind tale that begins with Johnny turning his manor into party central to blot out his guilt over a friend's death. His concerned pals stage an intervention for him at Rev. Purdy's lakeside resort---a scheme that goes out the window when Johnny foresees a storm wreaking havoc in the area. Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager) and Jane Lynch (“A Mighty Wind”) have funny roles as gregarious tourists with an overzealous interest in Johnny's gifts.
Dead-heads may be frustrated to learn the Stillson storyline has been shelved — Flanery won't appear during the summer run due to USA's insistence on a less serialized format. USA's concern is understandable. After a powerhouse start last summer — it was the most watched drama-series premiere in basic-cable history — Dead Zone took a ratings dive at the dawn of its second season last January when it came up short against the Golden Globes. The winter slump was a shame because it means that many viewers missed a string of intriguing stories, notably March's "The Man Who Never Was," featuring Robert Culp as an eccentric neighbor with a knack for disappearing.
Missed it? Tonight's episode, "The Storm," repeats Monday at midnight (opposite "Letterman") and Tuesday at 11 p.m. (opposite "The Daily Show").

I love it when they get the in-depth emotional episodes out of the way first. Speaking of first... FIRST!!

This show NEEDS to be talked about. It's comedy genius. Is Gary crazy, or is his mind too big for our universe? Seriously, it's obviously somewhat staged, but it's a great subversion of the "reality tv show"...Anyways, back on topic, Robert Picardo is great and needs to be used more. He was the water hag in Legend, for God's sake.

What has DeadZone become. It seems like a show run by a network, that should be run by a creater...

But Herc would rather discuss this than THE WIRE or PROJECT GREENLIGHT!

Gary Busey definitely exists on a higher plane than most of us. Either that or he's just frickin' nuts. Funny, I caught a rerun of SNL from a year or so back over the weekend, and they did a "Star Dates" skit with the Drunk-Girl guy playing Gary Busey. It was just like watching "I'm With Busey"...........................
.................. now, as far as Dead Zone: I'm a Stephen King freak. Loved the book, loved the movie. Being a fan of the film, I was a little concerned with how the series would work. I was pleasently suprised by the first season. It was well written and acted, and Nicole de Boer was cute as could be. The second season kind of bogged down for me, and I missed an episode or two. I don't think it was the show's fault though, I think it was that I was trying to watch too many things last year. What I did catch of the Stillson saga was very well done though. I'm not sure that USA is doing the right thing with these summer standalone type episodes. I caught part of this one and then switched over to Showtime for the episode of "Dead Like ME" I had missed earlier in the week. Maybe I'll catch the replay of this Dead Zone tonight or tomorrow. I'm just not on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next, like I was during the first season. Dana in a bikini might be worth watching for though. .............................. ......................... BTW, I've seen all the summer "blockbusters" so far (except Nemo), and CA: Full Throttle is the most fun of them all. -
I've been a fan of this show since I started watching mid season 2. I taped The Storm last night since I was out for the evening and I'm looking forward to checking it out after work tonight.
Anyone pick up the first season on DVD? -

Ummm, a bunch of kids studying science doesn't seem like a "party", somehow. Anyhoo, it was an okay episode - you could see new guy Karl Schaefer (Eerie, IN - Strange Luck) adding his weird touch to the show, on top of the weird touches it already had. I can't say I'm impressed with the "new" approach USANetwork is insisting it takes - the bad ratings were the result of...well, bad scheduling. By USA. So of course they insist the writers and producers have to change the show, and toss in an attractive woman in a bikini. Dumb. On the other hand, I didn't think the episode we got here was that bad - who the heck was the guy in black at the carnival, though. It's the ads with Anthony Michael Hall throwing out his chest and doing this heroic pose that throw me. The episode next week (which seemed to have a bit of good ole King-style Capt'n Trips disease thrown in) didn't seem any worse or better then the one they did last year about the drug that caused problems in newborns. And I can't say I entirely miss Stilson - he's best in small doses. I'll miss the reporter's romance, though, since it actually gave us one of the funnier first season episodes. I'll give it a chance for now.

personally, i'd like to see them resolve the stillson storyline and move forward from there. it gets to be too much of a game to see how close or how far they take it from the book version of events. but just dropping the storyline altogether without resolving anything would be a lame cheat. all they need is one good two-parter to put a wrap on that story, and push the series past the book/movie version into entirely new areas. it seemed like they were on the right track with the finale last season, until it turned out to be some alternate reality BS. as for last night's episode, i wasn't too impressed. the fx sucked (tv shows shouldn't try to do movie-type fx unless they've got the budget for it), althought the raindrop-POV shot all the way from the cloud down to the sunbathing hot redhead's navel was nice. and i'm glad they finally cut off the black dude's dreadlocks, AND smashed that horrible fucking car of his. hopefully they've found a sponsor with a less idiotic looking vehicle to feature from now on. the only part of last night's episode that intrigued me at all, apart from the redhead in a bikini, was the guy in black taunting Johnny from the woods... hopefully that will be developed over the season, and wasn't just some bizarre one-off thing that ends up making no sense.

I am finally happy to see that Herc is reviewing the sleeper hit The Dead Zone. I really like how people levae comments that are negative about the Dead Zone but have nothing to say to back up the remarks. If you are going to *diss* it comes up with reasons. I think the show is much better than the crap we have out there to watch. Its inventive and emotional without being cheesy and is a nice replacement for many sci-fi fantasies shows we have lost over the past couple years. Not all episodes are stellar, but I like its understated performances and stories. They are not all slick and glossy and dont wrap up all pretty like most shows. It gets better each episode and I hope Herc will continue to review it.

Hello, I just wanted to add, I was watching the show with someone and he pointed out he thought the man in black was JOHNNY himself. I would have to watch it again cause I didnt even catch what he said. Hope this helped

I love the dead zone and thought the first episode of season 3 last night was good with them tying in Johnny and Bruce getting stuck with the Carnival, Johnny thinking the storm is following him and the man in black.
This is one of the better written, interesting shows on television that's hard to not watch.
I agree with you guys; "I'm with Busey" is totally funny and a very absorbing show to watch.
Busey does seem to have a lot of Zen master lessons for Adam even though he teaches him in a Jack Ass style way.
Great show! -
Cool beans!! I had no idea his resume was so eclectic. What was the other topic? Oh yeah, Dead Zone isn't watchable. It only appears that way if you stick it next to the rest of the drivel on TV, like the way the food at a Denny's restaurant only looks palatable if you have an ugly waitress. This show is ca-ca. Wake me up when they have an extra-special "Brat Pack Reunion" episode for sweeps week.

I agree that droppins Stillson is a VERY bad idea. This season should have a Stillson Arc leading to a 2 part finale that will end it. They also seemed to drop Smith's relationship with the reporter which is another bad idea. I feel this show is now stuck with filler eps rather than moving forward.
-
Perhaps there is no Stillson storyline for the summer season because Flannery has been filming "Boondock II: All Saints Day," the sequel to his cult hit "Boondock Saints." I hope that Lucas and Spielberg put him to good use in Indy IV as Young Indy once again, perhaps showing the original falling out between Indy and Marion that was mentioned in "Raiders" in the opening scenes of the film.

At least according to the final script posted at the USA site, the mysterious man in black (which they refer to as "Futureman") isn't supposed to be Johnny, or anyone specific. And I don't think it was Anthony Michael Hall...

The writing quality and crew skills are there, let's all hope Anthony Michael Hall is now mentally well and happy, because he does a superior job in this show.
