Father Geek here with pigmon and the latest from Japan...

Fathergeek-san...

We are in the middle of the rainy season, here in Tokyo. It is sooooo damn humid.
Best way to escape from this weather, of course, is to go to the movie theaters.

Here is this week's report...

NEWS

* Most disappointing news of this week in Japan comes from Bandai Visual
president, Kazumi Kawashiro who announces that Katsuhiro Otomo's "Steam Boy" will not be
completed by its original October release
date. It will be postponed until next year. The reason why this project is delayed is that
the ending sequence required more complex work. Toho co. which is the distribution
company for "Steam Boy" is giving it more time to complete the needed sequences. Now "Steam Boy" will release
early next year.

* The remake of "Cutie Honey" which is popular TV Anime series in 1973 to 1974
will be directed by "Evangelion"'s Hideaki Anno. Cutie Honey will be played by
sexy Eriko Sato. This movie will be for the first time in 4 years for the
director, Mr.Anno(his last film,"Shikijitu" was
my best Japanese movie in 2000). Film stars shooting next month and is
produced by Warner Japan.

* Ryuhei Kitamura("Versus"&"Azumi")appears at Tokyo Shinjuku Cinema Square
Tokyu for openig day of his new film, "Alive". He promises to the audience that he
will difinetaly make a film in Hollywood next year. One of the possiblities is
the remake of "Versus".

* On June 22nd, "Battle Royale II" appears for the first time in public in
Tokyo. Before showing the film, a 70 piece orchestra performs 3 songs and then
director, Kenta Fukasaku and rest of cast will come to the stage in front of the 2000 audience members.

* Climax scene of upcoming "Kamen Rider 555" has been shot with 11,000 extras
at Saitama Super Arena. About 90,000 people came to appy as extras for this sequence.

* Director Shinji Aoyama("Eureka") is shooting his new film,"Lakeside Murders"
now. Koji Yakusho("Tampopo") and Etsuji Toyokawa are playing major roles. This
film will be completed this fall.

* One of hottest Japanese director,Junji Sakamoto("KT"&"Face") is also
shooting his new film, "Club Shinchugun ,Out Of This World".It is story about young
jazz musicians at a US military camp ,just after WWII. This film will be at
Japanese theaters early next year.

NO SHORT REVIEWS for this week

(Next week:"Battle Royale II",Boku No
Songoku(remake of

      Hideaki Anno Cutey Honey/Evangelion news

      by andrewwiggin

Too bad that Anno Hideaki is NOT directing the live-action evangelion. He said quote: "Evangelion was created with a Japanese sensibility. In the live-action version ,though, I suggested that the creators let their imaginations roam, unconstrained by the framework of the existing anime....I'm very much looking forward to seeing the re-creation of the title." source July 2003 Newtype magazine. Instead of the live-action eva movie he will make live action Cutey Honey. Here is some early concept art for the live-action film.

I have not seen the original, it may be good it may not. But I read somewhere that it is going to be something like a Japanese Charles Angels in which it would appeal to mostly girls.

      Its an encoding issue.

      by hellstrom

If you are using IE 6 you can select View >Encoding >Japanese

      It should come up.

It says "Collage of Our Life w)"
then a series of confusing Kanji which must be a name since it comes after the "with" mark. It says "Shuunkei" and then its unintelligible.
and then it says "8 Mile."
      Anyway, thats what it is.

      Ignoring other tokusatsu developments

      by japanhero.com

Looks like the person above forgot to mention that pictures of several new additions to the Kamen Rider Faiz (555) movie have appeared in Japan early this week depicting several new KR's (including what looks like a female rider) that will be making an appearance in the movie and possibly in the TV series. Another interesting tidbit is that in the Kamen Rider Faiz movie our hero is supposed to be fighting 10,000 enemy riders (mass production KR Faizu's)!!!

Also left out of this report is the fact that promo sheets for the new Sailor Moon live action show are floating around as well as new toy pics from Toho's new tokusatsu hero program Grandeseizar.

Aba Ranger, which just introduced Abarekiller last week will also be introducing two new Bakuryuu this week.

      Solaris is number seven?

      by yuriy

The remake of Solaris is hideous piece of crap! Stanislaw Lem and Andrei Tarkovsky probably are turning in their graves because of it. How can in be number seven? It shouldn't be on the chart at all! Fucking Clooney!

does anyone know voltus V or gaban?

      by gasoline rainbow

great animation from the 80's. voltus is like voltron but much much much better and less wankier.how about shogun? or godsigma? also briliant series and much darker. its kinda have a melloncollie air to it ala evangelion but story less philosopical/wankier.gaban is like err..power ranger but a solo fighter .and no stupid robot. gaban is silly but much better than powerrangers.
