R-Man contributes to the positive vibes on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN!

Published at:  Jun 25, 2003 2:35:45 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I've been pulling for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN for well over a year now and find it quite gratifying that the film is getting the sort of notices that it is receiving. Why? Cuz, it could have sucked bad. And I really didn't want that. I like the director and the cast and the look and feel of everything we've seen. I love that most of the reviews are coming away praising Johnny Depp for his quirkiness, and I guarantee that sort of word will continue when the reviews start coming in for ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, a film that he clearly steals from beginning to the end. Well folks, here ya go, no spoilers be here....

H to the Knowles

Hi there. You've been nice enough to post some of my other early reviews and if you're not deluged with reviews for "Pirates," I hope you can post this short review.

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean last night at an LA Press screening. I'll tell you this first, I only had a small amount of interest in seeing this and was planning on skipping it. I never went on the ride at the Mouse Kingdom so I didn't know the story until a friend (this Bi-atch that I know) told me about it. Come on, it's freaking Disney, so I just figured it would be another cute, pansy show. Yeah, they've got M. Night pumping out some cool stuff and yeah the Bruce & Ben movie was entertaining, but the origin of this is pure Disney and I thought for sure I would be rolling my eyes. So when a free screening came up I figured what the hell, the only thing I have to lose is time, so I saw it, and I'm glad I did.

It's much better than what I thought it would be. Johnny Depp is very funny. The effects and action are cool but he makes the movie. He's doing the quirky thing again, and it works again and he's fun to watch. The dude does not halfstep, he throws himself right into it and it works. The reaction that he gives with just his eyeballs makes you laugh because he's thinking exactly what you're thinking. And his introduction is very funny.

You know the story, cursed pirates trying to get find last gold piece of gold or a cursed treasure. And even though these pirates are nasty, mean and bad you feel kind of sorry for them. They've spent the last few years of their lives sort of like the living dead, except when they are exposed to moonlight they turn into skeletons. (Although, I'm not sure why that is, because I don't remember them saying that they died so I don't know why they turn into skeletons) The effects are great and the skeleton stuff is done in a creepy enough way that it'll give kids a scare and will impress adults.

So what kind of pirate movie is it? If you're dying to see a hardcore pirate movie, this isn't it - there are no gory deaths, bloody swordplay and drunken romps with hookers. It's a nicely constructed action movie with just the right amount of humor, action and bloodless battle violence that's pretty damn entertaining. This is after all a family movie for preteens and teens and young adults, some of the jokes are corny, but the kids will laugh. Two of the pirates are like Arto & C-3PO. It's part of the formula and it didn't turn me off. But other than the lack of some gory violence and some minor continuity problems (watch during the sneak attack - the one tall African Pirate is underwater, cut to the next scene and he's in the cave getting ready to fight...did I miss something? maybe so, but that's what it seemed like for me.)

The usual film snobs will dismiss it, but I liked it and I'll probably end up donating to the mouse king when I see it again with some friends. It's good.

Thanks Harry, take it easy.

R-man

    talk back order messed up?

    by gordon bombay

Nah, couldn't be. Really, how hard would it be to fix the talk backs, seriously? Pirates looks good though, I'll see anything with Johnny Depp and the sexiest tomboy beanpole on the planet. Does anyone know if Hulk Hogan has a cameo in this?

    can't wait for this flick

    by zeldas

it will surely be the coolest summer blockbuster. Not to mention the oh so dreamy Orlando Bloom, but I suppose I have to steal him from Harry. Ce la vie!

I knew Johnny would be awesome...

    by viola123

I just knew it. He looked so great with those dreads, and though I was so worried for him when I first read that he was going to work for Jerry Bruckheimer (I will absolutely pass out if ever I read that Jude will), but after I got used to the idea, I knew Johnny wouldn't take something that was mindless, not challenging, regardless of who the producer was. I mean I know Bruckheimer did "Black Hawk Down", but what else? I couldn't imagine Johnny in any of those craptaculars, so I'm just beaming that he's in "Pirates" and he's the one that all eyes are on. I know mine will be! :)

Yeah, that Johnny Depp is a character alright

    by ribbons

I saw this interview where he said he did some extracurricular preparation for his role as Jack Sparrow: he went to the dentist and him glue a bunch of silver caps onto his teeth. How many actors would have taken the initiative and done something like that, eh? Admirable indeed.

    by chickengeorgevii

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!!!! JOHNNY DEPP HAS ANOTHER CLASSIC ON HIS HANDS...LIKE "The Astronaut's Wife" OR "The Ninth Gate" OR "Benny and Joon".....AND WHO CAN POSSIBLY FORGET HIS HARROWING TURN IN "Nick Of Time"??????.....ADD ANOTHER ONE TO THE LIST!!!! CAUSE WE ALL KNOW IN THE HANDS OF BRUCKHIEMER, HE WILL BE IN A BLOCKBUSTER WINNER LIKE "Days of Thunder", "Bad Company" AND "Coyote Ugly"....AND THINK OF WHAT THE DIRECTOR OF "The Mexican" CAN DO FOR ALL OF THIS OUTSTANDING MATERIAL WRITTEN BY THE WRITERS OF "Godzilla" AND "Small Soldiers"....IT'S GONNA BE THE BEST THING TO COME ALONG SINCE THE McRIB!!!!!!!!....And thus, I would rather walk the plank! - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!

Still strikes me as "The Mummy" at sea

    by gheorghe zamfir

But Depps cooler than Fraser anyday, and The Mummy was a rip off too, and who cares with these kind of flicks anyways. Bummer on the lack of hookers though.

Glow in the dark Pirates, Aliens and Predators.

    by nottoo

Dare I say, another "glowing review?" Sounds like great fun and a return to one of the greatest of old-fashioned film genres. Looking forward to this and "Master and Commander," and "Peter Pan." Lots of pirates and swordplay ahead. Now this is OT, but interesting, notwithstanding. IGN FilmForce ran a plot synopsis for "Aliens vs. Predators" yesterday and its sounds a bit different than previously expected. Seems we're gonna get ancient ice-covered pyramids, complete with buff Egyptologists in addition to said creatures of the dark and scary. Now how about that? Kate out

    So, Ribbons...

    by zer0cool2k2

What were you watching on The Disney Channel when you saw that bit about Depp's trip to the dentist? (Not that there's anything wrong with that, I love The Disney Channel). Depp is much better when he's in a non-traditional role, like a pirate, a cross-drssing director, or a guy with scissors for hands. I think this movie looks like quite a bit of fun. And Kiera Knightly.... she's the.........well, she's hot!

I hope this movie does really well so he can be in more stuff, because sorry to say if he wasn't in the LOTR movies they would suck, he was the only thing that kept me interested through TTT so I will for sure see Pirates... Drat.

    by devil'sown

Uhm, no savage swordplay, fantastically ooey-gooey deaths, or.... saucy... wenches...? What th' Hell kinda "pirate movie" is this anyway?! Mmm-kay. Many a blockbuster has featured tons of action and still wasn't worth 2 shits. Mummy Returns springs to mind. Sure it was a whirling dervish of activity with some cute performances and state-of-the-art eye-candy. It was as instantly forgettable as any flick I've ever seen. I don't ordinarily go in for "family entertainment", but we fortunately live in an age where they make all-ages joints even us crusty old-timers can appreciate, an' I'm usually willing to give some of 'em a chance, hell, they're usually more diverting than most adult-themed features. Christ, how sad is that? I don't think I'm a snob, shoot, sometime I worry I'm not discriminating enough (nah), but I'd hope this sucker has the razzle-dazzle. I'm always up for watching Depp the king of quirk in action, but this sounds like one picture that could benefit from some dead, raped deer, vampires, werewolves, and the majestic Hulk Hogan generatin' some angst an' pathos, BROTHER!!

    Ultimate pirate spoof

    by misterk

For anyone interested in buckling swashes, read the ultimate pirate spoof - The Pyrates, by George MacDonald Fraser, the creator of Flashman and scriptwriter for the Three Muskateers (the classic Oliver Reed version). Available at all good bookstores.

    by sprint

the movie sounds good to me. I'm all about checking this one out. I agree with whoever pointed out that Depp is really outstanding when he plays someone outside the mainstream. He ain't exactly a mainstream guy.

I think the movie will be a lot of fun, probably one of the bigger hits this summer.

    Johnny Depp.

    by rapunzel

I'm wondering if Johnny Depp is one of the best actors out there today. Seriously, he completely transforms for each of his roles and (though often has a druggie part) chooses pretty different roles too. I can't wait to see him as a pirate!
