PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Reviews Sailing In Now!!

Published at:  Jun 24, 2003 7:31:57 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Lots of screenings of this one this week. I’m amazed to see that PG-13 on a Walt Disney Pictures film, but I guess it had to happen eventually, and this seems like a good title to have it happen to.

Pleaseletthisbefunpleaseletthisbefun...

Hi Harry,

Yo ho! Yo Ho! The Pirates life for me. I just got to see one of the first screenings in LA of Pirates of the Carribean. Hooray for good Pirate movies. It's long over due. While supposedly not quite finished there weren't too many things that needed to be tweaked for final distribution. This movie was exactly what it needed to be, everything that I had hoped for it to be. It was a fun and fantastic story that calls back to the ride that inspired it. These call backs are brilliantly funny and avoid being cheesy which would have been so easy. As for the writing, there was only one line in the movie that is really quite bad, I think it's in the trailor, but that is forgiveabe what with the rest of it being so good.

The entire cast is excellent, but Johnny Depp is brilliant. He is a master at playing quirky, something I usu ally hold against him in his choices of roles...I wonder what he could do with a "normal" character. But, I digress, Johnny Depp is Captain Jack Sparrow. I can imagine no one else pulling him off so perfectly. Kira Knightly is everything you could hope for in a spunky damsel in distress.

I don't want to go into spoilers but just wanted to let everyone know that this flick doesn't disappoint. It is a total romp. If you want more detail I can give it, but first I'm off to buy an eyepatch and a parrot.

Call me "alphabet soup".

Okay, that was a quicky. This next one’s a bit more in-depth. Let’s see if it’s good or bad.

Hey Harry,

I noticed that no one else had written in about the preview screening of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN that Bruckheimer held (and hosted) on Saturday night, so I thought I would weigh in.

First of all, it was a kick and a nice surprise to have Bruckheimer there, and speaking about the film. He explained that the print we were seeing was incomplete, etc. (looked pretty good to me though).

What we had the opportunity to see was some of the most shameless fun I have had at the movies in a longtime. Dictionary definition popcorn flick. I won't go into plot specifics (mostly b/c it's not worth it...the script is sometimes surprisingly convoluted for this type of film) But the story of how the titular curse came upon the Black Pearl - the pirate's ship – and the effects of the curse itself are pretty unique.

The obligatory romantic subplot (along with it's main players) is the most boring aspect of the film. I realized watching this why Orlando is so great as Legolas: it's b/c being stony and docile works for the elves that Tolkein created, but not so much as a scallywag. Oh well.

The action set pieces aren't always unique, but they all work, and are fun to see (especially when there is a skeleton at the other end of a sword), and Johnny's first escape attempt, segueing into his sword fight with Orlando are the epitome of action as humor.

The strongest elements in the film are Depp and Rush as the 'good' and 'bad' pirates, respectively. It is clear that both actors had loads of fun with these roles, and are hysterically funny (the first shot of Depp's Jack Sparrow still has me giggling two days later). Personally, I love both of these actors in almost anything and as far as "surprising commercial vehicles" go, this was a smart move for both of them.

I hope this film is successful, b/c it was just a good time. It played wonderfully with the audience I saw it with, but the last twenty or so years of movie-goers have not been kind to pirates in the cineplexes. I'm interested to see how this one plays with the crowds.

Drink up me hearties, yo ho.

In'n'Out

Cooooooool. I’m sure we’ll hear more about this one in the days ahead.

"Moriarty" out.

    Disney Ratings

    by zacdilone

"The Black Hole" was Disney's first PG film. I can't think of any PG-13 ones, though, so "Pirates" may be the first. It won't be as good as "The Black Hole," though, because it doesn't feature Academy Award Winner Ernest Borgnine.

    Pirates and ILM

    by shaner jedi

Although ILM is known for CG character animation and digital wonders, for this film they went back to the tried and true modelwork for the "at-sea" battle scenes.
The film does have some CG animation, but for the ships, Supervisor John Knoll and his team built ships at different scales and shot them in a water tank. The also blew some pyro-rig stunt models for some of the spectacular shots in the flick.

Unfortunately, alot of this stuff is not being covered anywhere. I guess it's just not hip and "cutting-edge" enough. Forget the fact it may LOOK BETTER and WORK BETTER than CG. Modelwork just doesn't have the media hype and hoopla around it like digital.

Great work from the ILM model, stage, and camera crews. :)

    Here's my review:

    by user id indeed!

I was hugely disappointed by this crap. Verbinski should learn to appreciate the theme park origins and not stray from the source materials. I was under the impression that the film was going to consist of only ONE spooky skeleton, driving the boat at the beginning, with rain and stuff. These pirates are dumb, of course, letting a skeleton drive the boat, because dead men make no good driving decisions, let alone tell tales. Anyway, I then expected the film to become a giddy musical romp, with pirates looting and pillaging a wee town while drinking heavily and getting chased, to hilarious effect, by a heavyset schoolmarm. Of course, when I first went to the ride I was similarly disappointed, as I had mispronounced the name and I thought it was about a Greek philosopher named Pirates (PEE- ra -TEES). Nonetheless, this film was a shit sandwich. I expected my ass to get soggy from splashing water and that one moderately-sized drop at the beginning, and instead my ass was truly bone-dry. This injustice will not stand.

    by terry_1978

Standards have changed since the '80's and what not, when you could utter the word "shit" numerous times in a PG flick and it'd be fine. I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed Disney was taking a long ass time rating this thing, like they couldn't decide whether to actually make a movie with the Magic Kingdom logo PG-13 for the first time in history, or to make it PG a la the Star Wars flicks.

    The Best Pirate Movies...

    by atticusrex

I do hope this is a fun-filled high seas adventure! From the trailers it seems to be fun... but you can never trust a trailer! For me the best Pirate Movies were the two Errol Flynn flicks...Sea Hawk and Captain Blood and of course the fun romp Crimson Pirate with the toothy Burt Lancaster. All the Pirate movies since that come to mind pale against these three! As for the two reviews here... well the first one I do not trust... the 2nd one seems more genuine. And folks my two cents on this Matrix thingy... Wait until the Third installment to judge this one.

The rating system has changed a lot...

    by wingnut1a

For example: Planet of the Apes (1968) was rated G. Could you imagine a movie being released today with the same amount of violence that was in the original Planet of the Apes? it would almost certainly be rated PG-13.

Captain Blood is the greatest movie ever! I've been raised on the thing, and in my opinion pirate films are now the most screwed-over subgenre (now that comic films are being given their dues). PG Disney Movies

    by blue_demon

I just bought the "Atlantis" dvd and noticed all the adult touches in it ( Helga's form-fitting t-shirt, the fight to the death between Milo and Commander Roarke, the death of the Atlantean King and so on ) and realized that this may be Disney's first PG Cartoon. It had no singing and dancing, no cute animals and was pretty much just a straight adventure story. I liked it, but then I noticed that it was a LOT like "Stargate." Milo and James Spader's character play experts in old languages ( Milo in Atlantean, Spader in Egyptian ) they both are hired ( during a storm!! )by a mysterious benefactor to join an expedition. On the expedition they are treated with disdain by the military, they meet and fall in love with a Girl from Another Culture ( Milo with Kida, Spader with the beautiful Milli Avital ) in the end they defeat the bad guy with a mixture of human, current technology and alien technology ( Milo kills Roarke when he converts him to a crystal creature and he is shattered by the blades of his ballon, Ra is killed by an army bomb carried to him by his teleporter.) In the end, the young scholar stays with the girl from the Other Culture and GIVES BACK A NECKLACE to his benefactor! ( didn't Spader give a pendant to Kurt Russell to take back to Viveca Lindfors? ) Freaky no? Yeah, I know...off topic, but I've seen talkbacks about movies degenerate into Bush vs. Gore so this should be no problem for ya.

I reeeaaly want this movie to be good. I mean, sure it's "a pirate movie", aaand it's a live-action Mouse flick, but c'mon, why not? They actually made a halfway decent gladiator movie a while back, and pirates are fun! All shit aside, Johnny Depp is just awesome in virtually anything he's in and Rush is always an interesting touch of class. Not so sure about th' plucky heroine and extreme elf Bloom, but if they bring the action, the funny, the "yo-ho-ho" high adventure that's required, I'm totally there.

Looks like it could be fun

    by ribbons

It would be a shameless popcorn movie, no doubt about it, but the trick is not taking yourself too seriously. Both Depp and Rush seem to be having fun with their roles, and the filmmakers obviously realize that this film is better suited as a mindless blockbuster; the dialogue seems awfully cheeky. In some cases that can be a bad thing (see: horrible "corset" line of Knightley's) but because they promise nothing more than adrenaline and escapism by choosing not to play it straight, the general public will probably have a lot more goodwill towards this than, say, 'Hulk.' As much as it sucks to admit it, most people don't go to movies to think. That's okay; not every movie has to tell you how to live your life, and because this movie looks to excel at everything else, it'll probably be a success. It'll be interesting to see if Harry loathes this as much as he loathed the Brendan Fraser 'Mummy' flicks because of what it stands for. Verbinski's visuals and the "cool" set and creature designs seem to have roped him in. I don't mean to be derogatory; I'm sure he'll explain for himself why he liked it, but I don't think I can go see another film that echoes 'The Mummy Returns.'
