Time to DREDD again'

Published at:  Jun 23, 2003 10:18:59 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... earlier this year I had a long conversation with Stallone about JUDGE DREDD - You could tell he was heartbroken about the character. He loved the comics, wanted to do a whole series of the films, but he knew as the filming on that film was commencing that it just wasn't working. He so wanted to make a Judge Death film, was so looking to doing the character over and over, but the terrible missteps could never be corrected. I don't know much about these Shoreline Entertainment JUDGE DREDD films, but certainly I hope they nail it. There is such great adventures to be had with that character and that world. I just want it to maintain that seedy lowlife fantasy feel that the books seemed to leak into your conciousness as ya read.

Hi there Harry.

Long time reader first time poster. I just read on UK site mjsimpson.co.uk some rather cool news about the new Judge Dredd films to be produced by Shoreline Entertainment. The first will be called Dredd Reckoning and will introduce audiences to the world of Mege-City One and to rookie Judge Dredd. Haunted by the death of his mentor, Dredd battles against gangster Max Voltek and a killer cyborg beast called the Phantom while exposing corruption at the heighest levels of the Law Department. Judge Hershey will be in this one too.

The second film will be called Judge Dredd: Possession. This will feature fan fave Judge Anderson from Psi Division fighting the Dark Judges - Death, Fear, Fire and Mortis. With sequences set in the Cursed Earth and a Judge Death led zombie army laying waste to Mega-City One!!! These films promise to expell the foul memory of that Stallone fiasco. A Director is attached and the screenwriter is British. The first film is set to begin shooting in late June or early July.

Best wishes

Sean.

Anyt kind of big-budget star vehicle is going to repeat the Stallone mistakes. This could be a classic B-Movie. Anything with a big budget is doomed to disappointment, but something small that kicks ass will be an immortal classic.

    by andrewwankenobi

I hope that they do it. The main reason why the first one sucked was because Judge Dread was a fugitive the entire movie and didn't get to make any judgements. I would love to see Judge Dread 'put the smack down'.

Hell, if they can remake 'The Punisher' then they can most certainly remake this one.

stallone and schneider are what caused the original dredd to sink down the swanner... they had a chance to create and exploit a new anti-hero and fucked it up royally... it saddens me coz the costumes were cool, the sets were cool, the lawmasters were cool, the overall look and feel was cool - hell, mean machine was frikkin cool and they killed him off along with the entire angel gang... !!??

Cool news indeed. Ahem. I'd love this to work out, I just don't believe it will. That second film sounds like Necropolis Rising, which can't be done right without a pretty massive budget. And whats with all this "origin" crap. We never needed it with Bond, Indiana Jones, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, and number of "mainstream" films or film series, so why are comics so different. And Anderson better be HOT.

June 1995: JUDGE DREDD opens and instantly bombs.
October 1995: JUDGE DREDD premieres on video and still can't recoup any funds.

Dredd rules... I might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed the Danny Canon version quite a bit. Was put off by the fact that Dredd had to remove his helmet during the movie (c'mon, in the comics Dredd was taking showers w/his helmet on fer Chrissakes) but overall I thought the flick was faithful to the comic. The look of it reminded me of '77 Star Wars. Here's hoping the Shoreline doesn't drop the ball on this one, the series has potential to be great.

    Dredd wasn`t...

    by paulio

..that bad. The production design was excellemt for its time, the costumes performed better than we had a right to expect and the Angel gang looked glorious. Schneider was excellent too. The only let down was the script, which was pitifully Hollywoodised in it`s cookie cutter blandness. Lets see a cool Dredd film. Helmet on for the entire thing (what, so people didn`t know what Stallone looked like? We had to lose the helmet?) and yeah Anderson and Dark Judges sounds very cool indeed. Rookie Dredd sounds very lame indeed and could kill off any coolness before it even starts tho`. Sad really.

How Stallone can moan about the film when he fucked with the two main things in every Dredd comic. He took his helmet of and he kissed a girl! the two things he never did (discounting Dead Man when he was half dead)
That film made me sick. Looks wise is was perfect, but Stallone ruined the main character with his nonsense one liners (Old Stony doesn't have a sense of humour!). Then to make a prefect Mean only to kill him, whats the point! Mean has been involved in some of the more memorable Dredd stories over the years (Judge Child anyone).
At least these productions are UK based with heavy involvlement from 2000ad to ensure they stay faithful
Fingers crossed someone can make the film that the source material deserves.

    Reply to Talkback

  • apart from being really cool that would also subtly imply that this version is the definitive version and that we can discount the stallone effort. apart from the costumes, the look of the Stallone film was spot on. Schneider wasn't necessary but all the other characters were great. i was just surprised so many of them were killed off. the main problem was of course the script. i tried watching it the other day and turned it off after about 20 minutes. i really hope the new ones get it right, but from what i've heard so far i am not optimistic.

well he either lied to you or lied to barry norman on british television. i'm paraphraing here but stallone said he knew dredd was gonna be a bad film, because "it's a comic but it isn't funny" i kid you not! mr stallone, the great comic fan, believs, (or did at the time of the interview), that a film based on a comic has to be funny. because of the word "comic". that's why the film sucked ass, my opionion of danny cannon went up several notches after seeing that interview, picture the poor guy, his big break trying to make a dark dredd movie, and stallone going we need more jokes here! who do you think the producers listned to, danny or stallone? fan of the comics my arse!!!

    by onefettinthehand

Despite the very notable exception of the "I knew you'd say that" repeated line, I thought the film ROCKED HARD! I've never understood why people bash it. I was a huge fan of the comics since I was a kid, when he was still in 2000 A.D. Stallone's drill sergeant take was different, but interesting. If you hate the film, then you must hate the comics because they are extremely close in every way. Yes, minute things were changed for the film. Dredd's uniform was made navy instead of black. The Lawmasters fly, he takes off the helmet. So what? The crux of the film is directly from the comics. Even the robot was from 2000 A.D. The designs were all made by 2000 A.D. artists. Armand Asante was a cool and unique enemy. Remember, this was WAY before cloning was the "in" thing to do. Personally, I would love to see Sly reprise the role in these follow ups. It's not like he can command a big salary anymore anyway. But he's busy with Rocky 6. That's his baby and I understand, but isn't it pretty much D.O.A.? Anyone that has a problem with Judge Dredd can suck the cream filling from my balls!

We NEED another adult animated film. Aside from Heavy Metal, American Pop and some really weird ones like the Pink Floyd stuff and Fritz the Cat, there aren't any. Well, there's Animatrix, but that just proves how cool it would be. Judge Dredd would be perfect for it. Harry Canyon basicly ripped off Mega City One anyway. That would just totally rule! good job!

But I kind of like to know where Sean has gotten his information. Unless it comes straight from Rebellion or Shoreline, I'm very wary of it, almost sounds like hoax info to get us Dredd drooling, then only be disappointed in the end.

    by horus

Is that both Danny Canon and Stallone ..didn't realise that it WAS meant to be funny!Their po-faced approach , with endless scenes of Judge council meetings, killed any fun to be had.Dredd is meant to be so tough and brutal {not to mention , totally unfair and fascist }that it's a laugh .The old *Sledge Hammer* tv series captured the feel of Dredd better than the movie and Robo cop..was far, far closer ..Oh ..and the look of the movie wasn't *spot on* at all. Those lycra Versace' designed uniforms were a mockery{he's meant to be wearing black motorbike leathers!}The form revealing costumes that the movie came up with ..meant that they had to cast Male models and ballet dancers as all the mega tough judges!!!?? For f**ks sake!!

  • Though not linked as far as I can tell. I had to work out how to view the may archives. Follow this URL http://mjsimpson.yatesy.net/oldnews.asp?archive=May and you shoudl find the story on that page. ********************** There's also a story there claiming Brad Pitt is or may be cast as Captain America, and that the first Cap movie will be in WWII while the next two will be present day. The person who runs that site is a journalist and has worked for a lot of film and sci-fi magazines, including SFX, so it would seem he has a bit of credibility. **************************** Being a huge Dredd fan, I hope these films work out. I'd love to know who the director and writer are. I'm not a huge Captain America fan, but if the news relating to that movie is also true I'd be quite pleased. Pitt is a bit older than I think Steve Rogers could be, but he's a good actor, he looks the park well enough and he's a box-office draw. And the potential for a great WWII superhero flick is quite huge... we need a period super-hero pic. But back to Dredd, I hope Jason Statham is cast in the lead, and that Hershey has her proper hair-cut, as well as the whole rest of the thing being more faith ful to the book.

    by beardedprawn

If there's gonna be any new Dredd movies they have to be directed by Paul Verhoeven. No one does fascism like him - Robocop? Starship Troopers? The movie sucked because they were being all cute about his being a stickler for the law. Dredd's a stoney faced bastard that shows no mercy when dishing out the sentencing. If he catches you eating loitering or eating sugar you're going down. The only good things about the movie were Ron Perlman and the ABC warrior.

    Helmet???? Let it go!!

    by garbyrner

The point isn't that Dreddy never takes off his helmet, the point is that we never see him with it off. The shower scene in 2000ad with him wearing the helmet is for cheap laughs. In the movie we just happen to be seeing him at a point in time when he takes his helmet off. It's really not that big a deal, surely the main point is that the film was crap, and not 'cause we saw Stallones mug. I do however agree with the kissing problem. But this time they have gone against Dredd's morals, it's against the rules so he just wouldn't do it!!

    by spacesheik

JUDGE DREDD was a shit film because of 1. Rob Schneider and 2. the softening of the Dredd character. The plot with Armand Assante creating clones wasn't much of a plot either. It's sad cause the first 20 minutes or so were quite good, great BATMAN-like sets (in London), good action. The moment Stallone took off that helmet the film went downhill all the way. By the end of the movie when they were stuck in that desert with the HILLS HAVE EYES hillbilly cannibal types and Shneider was cracking jokes and shit, you just knew THE FILM WENT TO SHIT.

    Pipe Dreams

    by psychonaut

First off, the Stallone movie was not a *bad* movie in the way that, say, Boxing Helena or Batman and Robin were bad movies. In many ways it was good. Mega City One looked pretty much like what Mega City One should do, the supporting cast (with the obvious exception of Rob "My continuing career is a mystery to the sentient world" Schneider) were excellent, Mean Machine was in it. And so was an ABC warrior. What went wrong was when someone decided to make it the same as any other movie, best shown by Dredd kissing Hershey. All readers of the comics know that Dredd would never kiss Hershey and Hershey would never let Dredd kiss her. In fact, I always though Hershey was a lesbian. The thing is, if Dredd had not kissed Hershey, all the non-comic fans wouldn't have left the theatre grumbling "Well, I liked it, but the hero didn't kiss anyone at the end, so it was crap." And he took his helmet off. These things don't make it a bad movie, but they are a bit like a grain of sand caught in the gusset of a comfortable pair of underpants: small, but the make the pants really irritating. ***Secondly, whilst low-budget movie making is generally a good thing and to be encouraged, the idea that a low budget movie could accurately recreate the teeming overcroweded sprawl of Mega City One is just silly. ***And finally, the movies described in this article are never going to be made. They just aren't. Even those of who are saying "Can't wait!" and so on, you know it. If you look deep in your heart, beyond the layers of hope and optimism we all construct to shield us from the inherently brutal futility of this existence, down into your very core, to the point where knowledge and belief blend into a dark pulsing understanding, you know these films aren't going to be made.
"Where's the little man?" Peace. Out.

this is old old news but its good to talk about dredd

    by cockknocker

I am a major stallone fan, but i also remember that barry norman interview, and i was so ashamed of him. Fortunately i think stallone has somewhat come back down to earth with so many recent failures. I think the blame should be at least partialy attributed to stallone. But largely it was the producers fault. Will Wisher co writer of T2 wrote a half decent script but producer and co writer steven de souza fucked it all up by insisting on certain wrong elements in the story. Everyone of those action movie cliches is souza's fault along with that other producer vagina dude who did nothing to help. Poor Danny Canon didn't have a chance, they made him cop all the flak and killed his career. For the record though, i do look on the film with fondness as it was due to the hightened publicity that i started reading 2000ad. The comic and the design side of the film inspired me no end in my younger days!

Huh. I'd like to see some sort of confirmation on this. Brad Pitt is not a terrible choice for Captain America (and am an old time Captain America fan. he was my favorite comic book character when I was a kid, until he was displaced by Wolverine once I hit my teens. what kid didn't want to be Wolverine?). I originally thought that a lesser known actor like Paul Walker of Fast and Furious would be a better choice, given that the budget needs to be pretty big to finance a WWII-era pic. I am glad that they are talking about setting the first movie in that era, though. Cap's a great character. Hopefully, we will be getting some more information on this soon. This topic would be fitting for someone to make a HULK HOGAN joke, because the film itself would be a joke. How can we mock this film with a "HULK HOGAN should play Judge Dredd....'I am the law, BROTHER!'" joke, when the purpose of the satire only makes us realize that Hulk Hogan/Terry Bollea/Mr. America has movie acting skills that resemble Sly Stallone's devolved acting skills? It would be like making fun of a Michael Bolton album with a Kelly and Justin joke.

You know technically, Dredd is actually a 'British' film?

    by salem hanna

By which I mean they could have applied for funds from the British National Lottery if they wanted to (which in the mid-90s helped fund many brit flicks). There's a LONG list of criteria that defines a film as 'British' enough to be eligible for such funding, including what percentage of the post-production costs are spent in Britain, where the director is born, stuff like that. And while many British classics like A Fish Called Wanda would not have passed enough of the tests had the lottery funding scheme been around in their day, Judge Dredd - a typically Hollywood summer actioner, with a $20m star and several American producers/writers - would have done, at least according to an article I read some years ago. Anyone else find that a little bit...odd?

I saw Judge Dredd years ago, and I remember sitting in the theater eager as hell, and then the opening crawl came up. When that cheesy voice started to read it out loud for us, the whole theater cracked up. I knew right then that I had wasted my money. I kept on thinking "Dude! No need to read it for us! We can read!" Can you imagine if Blade Runner had that stupid voice reading the opening crawl? Aargh! That first impression was hard to shake. That and Armand Asante's over-the-top performance. Stallone should have kept the helmet on throughout the Danny Can

    by monkey_king

I can truly see Sly playing the main character of Benjamin Slate and Jackie Chan, Mark Dacascos, Jeffrey Falcon and Dolph Lundgren being supporting cast. Need a tight bodied female to play the Slate love interest who is in the current public eye, or up-n-coming public eye who has no problem with full nudity(briefly).

SET YOUR LAWGIVERS TO HI-EX FOR THIS ONE

    by tactical badger

Check out the home site for the company who bought the movie rights at http://www.shorelineentertainment.com/company.html

Do you think they have the money and muscle to pull off a movie that pays tribute to a character with a rich history spanning 20+ years?

Do you suspect that this will be some cheap straight to video knockoff? Who remembers that Justice League TV movie - or the captain america movie?

Do you think Megacity-One will now become some rundown, grungy, presentday, innercity ghetto instead of the hi-tech metropolis of mile high city blocks and overlapping motorways we see in the comic?

    Too right...

I can only see this working as an animated / cgi feature if they don't compromise and show Dredd as Dredd and not that fag from the Stallone Movie. "Boo Hoo I judged my brother and the other judges don't respect me" - I thought stallone was gonna start crying! That's not our Dredd!

Dredd is up there with Batman, Superman, X-men. A lot of history and a lot of great, intelligent stories to choose from.

Why do they cock it up? Just adapt the damn comic strips as they appear and stop messing them around!

  • ...I wouldn't be surprised to see another studio take a stab at Judge Dredd. I agree with many TBs here in that the Stallone Dredd looked cool and had major potential, but just sucked thanks to the betrayal of the Dredd character. I'm not too familiar with Dredd, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to kiss girls (though it is Diane Lane)or do one-liners.

    SAY WHAT????

    by tomvee

"Who remembers that Justice League TV movie?"

What??? When? How? Where is it? I want to see it! I want to see the Corman FF4 flick too! I go ga-ga everytime they run that ad with the superheroes sitting around a conference table.

    I knew you'd say that

    by tall_boy

The best stuff in that flick was in the first 15 minutes. It went downhill with Judge Dredd being kicked out of Mega-City One. That's not the story ANYBODY wants to see! We just want to see him kicking ass and being inhumanly lawgiving. Screw that fucking script.

The idea of a Judge Dredd follow-up is about as dreadful as that

    by red raider

i.e., laughably pathetic. Yet, perhaps this time they will get it right, and we'll be treated a kick ass Dredd film...

    Cap'n America

    by scythe1138

The supposed news scoop sounds pretty fake. I've heard this rumor before, but the script isn't even written yet and the Brad Pitt choice is far too obvious. I wouldn't tear out my hair if Pitt was cast, but I think they could do better with someone lesser known. As for Red Skull I would suggest Tim Roth, Guy Pearce, or someone else with exceptional acting ability and preferably who has experience in playing a villain.

    Thomas Jane

    by steve rogers

Should have been Captain America, the guy is infinitely better suited to that role than to the Punisher, who he resembles about as much as he does Wonder Woman. Chris Meloni IS Frank Castle, Godammit! Having Brad as Cap would be fine though, it would at least guarantee some public interest and he would be good in the role. The Cap movie should begin in WWII with a huge battle sequence showing how he gets frozen (think Ultimates #1), and then move into the present day, as any Cap film will have to deal on a fundamental level with the whole "fish-out-of-water" aspect of the Cap story to emotionally engage the viewer, otherwise it's just another war movie with some nut in a blue outfit. As for those two Dredd movies, they will either never get made or will be so low budget as to suck donkey ass. The first flick failed because those making it forgot that Dredd is a satire and not a generic action movie, and that you're not SUPPOSED to like to the hero. And Stallone was a freakin' egomaniac - as if he would have done the whole movie with the helmet on! But what's this about a Goldsmith score for the movie?????

  • TANGO AND CASH (Kurt Russell), CLIFFHANGER, JUDGE DREDD (Schneider and Diane Lane), DEMOLITION MAN (Sandra Bullock for fuck's sakes) ASSASSINS, THE SPECIALIST (Sharon Stone. Apparently Stallone always needs someone to play against, and its usually either comic sidekicks (OSCAR) or female partners. Even in GET CARTER he had to introduce his female neice as a supporting player. But Rob Shneider was the WORST out of all the above - he almost single-handely FUCK the JUDGE DREDD film.

This news is at least two years old

    by glesga debs

www.shorelineentertainment.com - the full news is here and I suppose the only good thing is - they're wanting an "unknown" to play Dredd. He's never going to remove his helmet neither.

It will also be written by people who are complete Dredd nerds - ie - it will appeal to the readers!

Hope it sees the light someday!
