THE PRACTICE: The Next Generation!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Long story short: ABC is paying a lot less for episodes of “The Practice” this coming season, and about a month ago series producers sacked a big chunk of its cast. Word is the departed include Dylan McDermott, Lara Flynn Boyle, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Marla Sokoloff and maybe rookie Chyler Leigh.
A Josef Adalian story in this morning’s Variety sugggests that James Spader, who played a very odd lawyer in last year’s “Secretary,” will likely replace McDermott as a "complicated, ethically challenged" attorney on the series.
The stunning Rhona Mitra, who played a Jewish-Latina med student on “Gideon’s Crossing” a few years ago, has apparently also been approached about a role. A Brit of Irish and Indian ancestry, Mitra was the original model for Lara Croft in the “Tomb Raider” video game.
I am – Hercules!!

I mean, are they going to have everyone killed in a plane crash, or what? If they show's ratings are in the toilet enought that they fire most of the cast, why don't they just rename the show. That way, no one will be left wondering what happened to the cast. It will be just another lawyer show with the black guy, the fat chick, and that Italian guy saying, "We've got to do what'th right!"
-
...is the network is relying on the name of the series to hold the audience. Though, I'll admit, if the James Spader rumor is true I might be inclined to check it out.
"...an ethically-challenged lawyer" isn't that kind of like saying "a non-walking parapelegic"?

What was once a brilliant, nuanced, REALISTIC program about the challenges of being a small-time criminal defense lawyer in a big city (first season) quickly became a turgid soap opera where the characters spent more time bedding, and defending, each other in court, while arguing more and more absurd cases. Good riddance to this show.

Couple of facts: ABC moved the show from Sunday nights where it was performing well, to Monday nights where it tanked against Raymond and Joe Millionaire. Instead of supporting the show and/or putting the show back on Sundays, ABC said it would cancel the show. David Kelly was extremely angry about the whole situation. ABC then told him that the budget simply wasn't there to continue the show. Camryn Manheim told Kelly that she would take a paycut in order to stay on the show. I'm guessing the other actors weren't so generous, hence 6 people were fired. Knowing that the end may have been in sight, Kelly wrote the season finale with that idea in mind, and made easy explanations as to where the characters went. They don't have to die an a plane crash over the summer. The season ended with Bobby (fired) quitting, and divorcing Lindsey (fired). Lindsey was already not working at the firm along with Claire (fired), so them not being there wouldn't be a big deal anyway. Everyone at the firm hated Lindsey anyway. Rebecca (fired) was always extremely close with Bobby, and would probably quit the firm if he did, as she didn't always see eye to eye with Eugene (not fired), Eleanor (not fired) and Jimmy (not fired). There is more than 1 district attorney, so getting rid of Helen (fired) isn't an issue either. There are plenty of lawyers out there. The only character's who's absence would have to be explained is Lucy, but as she was just a secretary, and so young, it's easy for her to abandon ship when all the chaos is going on. Will the show survive such a major cast change? I have no idea. I will continue to watch unless it gets stupid, like Ali McBeal did. While talking about the Kellyverse, I'm extrememly annoyed that Fox has moved Boston Public from Mondays to Fridays. I like James Spader, he could do well with it. Do you notice how Chyler Leigh seems to kill every show she goes to? Is she the new Ted McGinley?

Christopher Judge (Teal'c) seems the obvious choice to play Morpheus.

Without out Lara Flynn and Dylan, there is not Practice. Just start another lawyer show.

This sucks! This is total BS! That IDIOT Kelley should be forced to watch his shows ALL tank in the ratings because of this massacre, Boston Public, too! ****** Gee, you're in a budget crunch, so what do you do? FIRE two of your LEADS! Shit, even V (the series) didn't do that with their cast pruning way back then. ******* Of course, we can blame ABC for starting this bullshit by fucking over the series with the schedule shift. God, how I HATE primetime TV nowadays. Nothing but shit and cheap, unscripted ("reality") shows.

I think Spader's amazing, especially when he's having his "A" game like in Wolf and Secretary. But if the point of the Practice losing all its characters is to save money, and series regulars are even taking pay cuts, how the hell could they afford an established (if B-list) film actor? Wouldn't that be a slap in the face to the series regulars who are taking pay cuts to continue if they hire Spader at Dylan's payrate or higher, anyway?

I hate when shows just explode to the point where they have to be cancelled simply because they were too successful. start off with a clean slate. but then there are some shows which just shouldn't have had that last season (xfiles, homocide). anyhow, they cant afford dylan mcdermot but they can afford james spader???
-
The storylines were poor & since I have not heard any writers are being replaced...they'll probably put the new cast members through the same old scripts and call it fresh and new. Hey, I wish them the best of luck but I am really NOT interested in the new Practice and my hunch is a lot of regular viewers feel the same!!

what show has ever been cancelled because it was too successful?
by supertoyslast
All I see is networks cancelling promising shows and milking anything successful for all its worth with endless spinoffs and keeping big shows on the air after paying the cast way too much because they don't have anything which could replace those shows

Never cared for "The Practice"; overblown, same ol shit about "Lawyers fighting the good fight!" Been around lawyers and once thought of going to law school myself, changed my mind when I realized I wouldn't be Perry Mason but an overpaid paper pusher. Kelley was a lawyer in Boston and Dylan Mcwhatshisface was the "idealized version" of himself. I was a fan of Kelley's underrated "Picket Fences." Don't really care one way or the other about the cast change but in my opinion a smart move by ABC and Kelley: they keep the desired affluent demo that advertisers want and they also inject some new blood in a tired series- may work or become like the "X-Files" after Duchovny left. I read that Sharon Stone was going to be the new lead and thought that was a good idea but apparently just a rumour since it looks like Spader is the lead. May watch the season opener just to see how they explain the major cast change. Anyhoo, good luck ABC...I WISH UPN WOULD DO THE SAME THING WITH "ENTERPRISE."-KEEP Jolene Blalock, Conneer Trineer and the Korean chick and fire everybody else!!

I actually did like the show but stopped watching this year. If I had known that Chyler Leigh was on it, I probably would have watched religously. But reall, this show should have ended by now.

Here's da lowdown...Lucy goes to the Rape Crisis gig full time, and may actually show back up as a client later in the season. Bobby will be in a few episodes, mainly the season (series) finale which pits Bobby against Eugene. Bobby's ex-wife, tired of being stalked by clients, quits being a lawyer, although she may be disbarred after abusing lawyer/client privilege last season, and moves out of state with lil Bobby. Since she closes her practice Chyler Leigh has to moves back to the firm from whence she came after her "amazing" trial record shows them she can do more than just throw up. And I believe that Spader is not replacing Bobby but will be a lawyer from a rival firm or possibly the DA's office so he will not be in every episode so maybe his affordabilty isn't as much of a problem. Also, for "McBeal" fans look for an appearance from "The Biscuit", although I'm not positive he will be the same character.

Basically the defense lawyers in this firm spent most of their time trying to get their guilty clients off from truly heinous crimes (murder, rape, child molestation, etc.) and they succeeded more times than not. It was like watching The Legion of Doom in suits, except they occassionally felt angst for what they did...but not much. Of course, if a real law firm handled that many high profile cases (Senators and such) where they got murderers off the hook on a weekly basis they'd have to hire body guards to protect them from vigilantes and angry family members 24/7. Even Johnny Cochran gave up criminal law after O.J., Jacko and P. Diddy.
Still, I'm going to miss Lara Flynn Boyle...I guess I'll just have to pretend that she's hiding behind lamposts and coat racks in the scenes without her. -
Can't comment on the other ones as they were never shown in the UK. After so many lawyer shows about big successful firms, it was cool to see one about a small-time, struggling firm, which had to blag loans to pay the rent and stuff. Mind you, even by the end of the first season the cases were getting silly.

As shown in Hollow Man.
