Anon takes a gander at Ridley Scott's MATCHSTICK MEN!

Published at:  Jun 10, 2003 3:50:04 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... So what do you think... Do ya think that Nicholas and Sam sat around the MATCHSTICK MEN set wondering why the world was so fucking stupid to not uniformly recognize that ADAPTATION and CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND ruled the earth? Or do you think that they were both arguing about who had the better Kaufman character? And that they both agreed that Jim Carrey has the best Kaufman character, and how it sucks ass that they weren't playing the lead in THE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND? Ok, they probably never had a single one of those conversations. We've had a few reports on early screenings of MATCHSTICK MEN - both positive and negative. No matter what though, Ridley always gets the benefit of the doubt, because... well, frankly, he kicks ass. Here's the trailer - Click Here

I was lucky enough to see a test screening of Ridley
Scott's new con artist comedy thing "Matchstick Men"
last week. And since I never signed any
confidentiality agreement, I can talk all I want. So
take that Warner Brothers.

Anyways, Nic Cage and Ridley Scott were in attendance
(hiding in the back row of course) and the audience
seemed pretty enthused about the whole thing.
Normally, I can't stand Nic Cage, but the promise of
Sam Rockwell drew me in. The film follows an
obsessive-compulsive con-artist (Nic Cage) just as his
mental problems are starting to get the best of him.
His partner (Sam Rockwell) convinces him to see a
psychologist, who then convinces him to find his
long-lost daughter (Alison Lohman). He starts bonding
with her, learning to be a better man, a better
father, yadda yadda yadda. He starts teaching her how
to con and all three end up involved in a big con that
backfires. Then all hell breaks loose. There's a few
great twists in the ending that I won't bother giving
away.

Overall I'd say that this is a pretty good flick. It
has a lot of potential. I know there's a preview out
already since this is slated for an August release,
and the cut I saw was pretty much complete. I did
notice a few shots in the preview that weren't in the
movie, so I may be missing something. I may not. Nic
Cage did an amazing job, as he always does (I still
dont' like him though), as did his costars. Rockwell
especially. This one is definitely worth checking out
once it hits theatres.

Cage is now, and always will be, a loser

    by glynyfaron

Have you noticed the only films Cage is any good in is ones where he's playing downtrodden failures (Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation). Ask him to play a leading man and his attempts at acting/displaying charisma are just painfully bad. But he really really thinks he's a good actor, that's the hilarious part. No one needs to see this movie, very few will. You know it's the truth.

Offer an apology, or admit you're a hypocrite Mori

Did you ever turn down a review from someone who was obviously breaking a NDA that they had signed? Have you ever turned down a bootleg or script that was gotten illegally? There is one different between what you do, and what we do. You're press so it's legal, but it is still STEALING.

SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU WHINING BITCHES

    by tom whitaker

Half of you pathetic cunts can't even spell 'hypocrite', let alone accurately detect one. So, Moriarty stood up and spoke his mind on something about which he has strong feelings and now you all feel your petty little freedoms have been attacked. I hate you. Die.

    Matchstick Men looks fun.

    READ THE BOOK

    by c.c. baxter

I actually had a chance to read the novel MATCHSTICK MEN by Eric Garcia. It was a smooth and easy read that was one of those few novels out there that was written almost like a movie. I did have some mix feelings about the ending and curious at how it will work on the screen. But overall, I had a smile on my face when reading it and I'm hoping to movie will be as entertaining.

Ridley Scott tries to do zany, eighties-style comedy and the result feels like POLICE ACADEMY VIII. Skip the movie and stick searing white-hot pokers in your eyeballs instead. You'll be glad you did.

  • I'm actually looking forward to this movie. I've become a big Rockwell fan and as long as Nic is staying out of war movies, I'm happy. Cuz Windtalkers blew Moby's dick and Corelli's Mandolin gave sour notes a bad name. ______________ BTW all u talkbacking assholes dropping the hammer on Mori need to back the fuck up and ZIP IT! Mori expressed his opinion and it happens to be one I agree with. What sane, appreciable movie fan would want to see a WORK print DLed from the net on a computer? I'll wait for the actual release and be impressed all at once with a FINISHED print on a silver 40 footer. You pirates and hackers suck. You ARE the lowest common denominator on the net. And no one really cares what you think anyway. RETARDS! LOSERS! SHAME! SHAAAAAAAAME!!!!

He's not a beanpole...he's a real He-man like Hulk Hogan who should have been cast in the Rockwell part.

a trend I've noticed among great directors like Scott...

    by beamish13

is that they're accomplished visual artists. Ridley Scott is an amazing penciller (check out the "Alien" DVD), Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton were animators, Scorsese could make amazing storyboards before he learned to drive, etc...

anyway, "Matchstick Men": trailer looked interesting, but I hope the father-daughter bonding thing doesn't get too gooey.
