Anon takes a gander at Ridley Scott's MATCHSTICK MEN!
Hey folks, Harry here... So what do you think... Do ya think that Nicholas and Sam sat around the MATCHSTICK MEN set wondering why the world was so fucking stupid to not uniformly recognize that ADAPTATION and CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND ruled the earth? Or do you think that they were both arguing about who had the better Kaufman character? And that they both agreed that Jim Carrey has the best Kaufman character, and how it sucks ass that they weren't playing the lead in THE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND? Ok, they probably never had a single one of those conversations. We've had a few reports on early screenings of MATCHSTICK MEN - both positive and negative. No matter what though, Ridley always gets the benefit of the doubt, because... well, frankly, he kicks ass. Here's the trailer - Click Here
I was lucky enough to see a test screening of Ridley
Scott's new con artist comedy thing "Matchstick Men"
last week. And since I never signed any
confidentiality agreement, I can talk all I want. So
take that Warner Brothers.
Anyways, Nic Cage and Ridley Scott were in attendance
(hiding in the back row of course) and the audience
seemed pretty enthused about the whole thing.
Normally, I can't stand Nic Cage, but the promise of
Sam Rockwell drew me in. The film follows an
obsessive-compulsive con-artist (Nic Cage) just as his
mental problems are starting to get the best of him.
His partner (Sam Rockwell) convinces him to see a
psychologist, who then convinces him to find his
long-lost daughter (Alison Lohman). He starts bonding
with her, learning to be a better man, a better
father, yadda yadda yadda. He starts teaching her how
to con and all three end up involved in a big con that
backfires. Then all hell breaks loose. There's a few
great twists in the ending that I won't bother giving
away.
Overall I'd say that this is a pretty good flick. It
has a lot of potential. I know there's a preview out
already since this is slated for an August release,
and the cut I saw was pretty much complete. I did
notice a few shots in the preview that weren't in the
movie, so I may be missing something. I may not. Nic
Cage did an amazing job, as he always does (I still
dont' like him though), as did his costars. Rockwell
especially. This one is definitely worth checking out
once it hits theatres.
