SIX FEET UNDER Season Three Finale!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I love love love “Six Feet Under,” but I loved “American Beauty,” so what does silly Herc know? Will Nate nail down what happened to Lisa? Will Billy boink Brenda? Will David kick Keith? Will Rico smack down his actress sister-in-law? Can Claire somehow wedge more homosexuals into her life? And what about the creepy “Silent Running” apprentice who earlier in the season cuddled with Mama Ruth?
9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

There's a scene in the previews where Nate finds his mother, mother's boyfriend, baby daughter, Claire and David in his room -- everybody is in their sleepwear. Nate asks, "What is everybody doing here?" I HOPE this is not a cliffhanger where one of the family characters (David or Ruth, most likely) blurts out, to the audience's "shock", "they found Lisa!" Fade Out: To be concluded next year! I REALLY, REALLY hope Alan Ball is far more classier than to pull this kind of shit. Personally, I think Lisa should stay missing throughout the 5-season run of this series, never to be found, and the question regarding her disappearance never satisfyingly resolved. Lots of people go missing every year, for unexplained reasons, and Lisa's unsolved mystery would fit with this season's themes: It's been alluded to throughout the season that this would happen in the deaths that are depicted in the teasers of the 3rd season episodes. The woman who killed herself over the breakup with her boyfriend. The man whose corpse was not found until 30 years later. The man who was distraught over the death of his wife, whom he had cheated on. The convenience store woman who was shot in the head, and whose husband was naturally grieve stricken -- saying how she was suddenly taken away from him for no logical reason. The man who had 5 "wives". The list goes on and on this season, clueing in on the fate of Nate and Lisa's relationship.

If you "love love love" the show so much then why have you been neglecting to post any kind of SFU update this past season for reality shows, SNL, and more of the same bullshit from the God-awful WB Network?

Does Herc get PAID to write "spoiler" articles that are one paragraph long and in fact include no spoilers and really no information at all? If that's the case, then perhaps I should get a job with Sports Illustrated writing articles to the effect of: "Will Penn State go all the way this year? And how will the Texas Rangers fare this season, and next?"
Personally, I hope Lisa's dead. Her character has annoyed the shit out of me all season, to the point that I really don't much like the show anymore. I can't lay the blame solely at the feet of Lisa, though, because almost all of the social relevance and engrossing drama (the stuff I loved) of the first season have been pissed away in favor of soap opera bullshit.
Gone also is most of the series's macabre sense of humor in regards to death, which irks me because that was part of what made the show stand out so much in the early running. It also sucks that there isn't really a "villain" in the show for everyone to rally against, since the Kroehner/Gilardi subplot was dropped.
But hey, great job on reviewing every single solitary episode of every stupid, banal, pointless, nebulous, shitty "Buffy"-related show on WB. Where would Western Civilization be if we couldn't hop online and get abstracts of each episode right down to the most minute detail, including but not limited to colorful descriptions of the smell of Sara Michelle Gellar's panty liner from that day's shooting? -
SFU has been good this year, and Nate's breakdown at the end of the last episode was great. Tonight's finale will determine if the season was really about anything, though.

This is one of the best shows on tv right now and i cant wait for tonite. Russell is definitely gonna kill himself. Brenda is gonna fuck her brother and her mom. I hope lisa is never found and they leave it unresolved. David is finally gonna dump keith. Ruths new b/f is gonna shoot her in the chest and ask, 'do u have a valediction, boyo?' Rico is gonna bang his sister in law, cause his fat ass wife is depressed and won't give him any. They definitely need to keep arthur, he was the best thing about this season. Nate's gonna get balls kicked in at a bar so bad he will puke on his balls and then his ass. Olivier is on a quest to fuck everyone on the show, hopefully he will bang claire, she needs someone to dump a good fuck in her.
There should have been more of the dead people talking to the characters this season. Their dad was hardly on the show this season. I missed the father and Nate talks. My fave episode was the one with the 'cult of daddy'. what was with the pre teen flirting with nate?! only on hbo!
all in all i enjoyed this season and cant wait for the next one! -

The Other Man makes a good point - Herc needs to get on the ball
by craiggers
Coverage over Six Feet Under was very, very sparse on this website. I love, love the show myself, but haven't gotten to watch it because of college (I didn't have HBO in the dorms). The same thing went for Buffy (cause I didn't have UPN either; it's a real shitty college). Thank goodness Herc at least covered Buffy though. It would be nice to see you focus on other quality programming as well, Herc such as Six Feet Under, Sopranos, etc. Enough of the reality tv shit and the stiflingly unfunny SNL. SNL has sucked all this year. Mad TV, however, has been on fire and should get more attention. Mad used to be, and still is to a small degree, a haven for dick and fart jokes. But it has evolved into a lot more and has a rapier wit that has been lost on SNL ever since the majority of the Will Ferral era cast left.

Show has devolved into a horrible
soap opera. Pregnancies, kidnappings, weddings, abortions, incest are typical boring, sensationalist crap. This
is prime time HBO not channel 3
on a Tuesday afternoon. The subtelty and macabre humor that
made this show wonderful are gone. Also unfortunate, is the fact that the death at the beginning stopped having any real
thematic relevance or even personal connection vis a vie the
funeral home after about three
episodes. Ball has gotten lazy and his crop of new writers are
awful, this HAS been some of the worst television all year. One big problem has been cramming in new characters that aren't well established--Russel, Dudley Smith, Olivier, that tattoo guy, Creepy Arthur, that new gay guy, etc. Too much of anything is too much at all. That said, it's pretty clear that Nate
will die given that fight he's
losing. Also, could someone tell
me how it got to the point of Will Brenda fuck her brother? I've tuned out for the past six
or eight episodes.

by ralph cifaretto
I hope she is. I hope the first scene (the weekly death opening) is her death. What a morbid show. Pretty good though.
-
I think Russell will kill himself in the beginning and the show will revolve around his death. Claire will have regrets about the abortion, Arthur will be seen spying on the mom and her new boyfriend in bed, Diaz will boff his sister-in-law, Brenda is so distraught and screwed up she will do her brother, and Nate will learn at the end that is wife's body has been found and it will end there. Next season will start w/ her death and the season opener will revolve around that. Or Nate will wake up, this whole season was a dream, and none of these predictions will mean squat.

Im suprised no AICN covrage.. It was very bittersweet ep..Some closer in Fry and Leelas realtionship..Very good ep but kinda sad that we will see no more new eps..R.I.P Futurama you will be missed
-
You guys that say this show is a soap opera are crazy. Soap operas by definition have ridiculous occurances, arch characters, and a serial format. Other than the serial nature of the show, what is there that is that soap operaish? Are you saying it is uncommon for teenagers to have abortions? That it is uncommon for people to be kidnapped? That people don't commit suicide? That real life has NOTHING in common with this show? Granted, most of us here don't go through these events being that a great many here live mundane, priviledged lives, but to say that things that happen to real people constitiutes "soap opera" is off the charts wrong. Too often do people throw around the term "soap opera" as a perjorative for any show that happens to have bad shit happen to its characters. I don't mean to step on any toes or make judgments on quality, but "Buffy" was pretty damn close to a soap opera, as was "Babylon 5" and "Farscape". These were black and white, good vs. evil shows, just like soap operas are. Seasons 1 and 2 of SFU were more soap operaish because they did have a villain (which I'm glad they don't have). I will buy into this nonsense when we see Nate's evil twin Trevor and find out it is he who is the real father of Mya. SFU takes real-life issues and portrays them in stark reality. Remember people, just because something has never happened to you doesn't mean its never happened. This show is about life, and weird, sick, sad, fucked up shit happens in life whether you want to accept it or not.

Did I miss a year? Isn't this just Season Two? (Season One came out on DVD last fall...about the time Season Two came out on HBO, yes?)
-
Don't grive for Futurama too much, since it appears that Cartoon Network's run may bring it back from the dead. The Seattle PI had an atricle about animated shows, and apparently in the 18-24 year old demo Adult Swim in beating Leno and Letterman on a nightly basis. The ratings are TWICE what Kimmel gets (which is especially impressive considering that CN isn't in as many households as ABC. Perhaps the success of the show on Adult Swim will get CN tp produce more seasons. Personally, I love the show but I could never remember to watclh990\00\0\0\9\0\000\n
-
Tonight's Futurama was not the last one. There are two more new episodes scheduled the next two weeks. That leaves five more not aired, including the last one produced.
-
No Russel, no art teacher, lots of Dad! Lisa's dead. Gabe's dead. Claire's baby is, well dead. Nate and Brenda back together (I guess), Ruth marries the pig farmer from Babe. Keith and David together again. My one question is: Did they say how Lisa died? Oh, and the opening death wasnt anyone important. It was a woman getting hit by a planes blue ice. It was friggin' hilarious!
-
The season finale's of this show have been really lame. Make this the 3rd misfire in a row.
-
I thought it was a pretty good ender. No, they didn't say how she died, only that they found a body and that it matched Lisa's dental records. I don't think Nate and Brenda will get back together, at least not for awhile. She's got that cuter guy next door, trying to turn over new leaves, and she's smart enough to see Nate is in bad shape (self-destructive, dead wife, etc.) and that it wouldn't be healthy for either of them. By the end of next season, they will. Nice little scene between Ruth and Claire with the earrings, and hilarious breakdown at the wedding. Ruth laughing joyfully, Claire sobbing hysterically. And I think I like Lisa better as an evil ghost. Bring her back next season to haunt and torment Nate. "Kill yourself you unfaithful fuck! Do Maya a fucking favor! JUMP! JUMP! JUMP!"

WOW, I am speechless, what a Outstanding Ender to one of the most Amazing Seasons...To see Brenda grow, to See Nate Self Destruct, The scene between Nate and Ruth in the kitchen screaming at each other was the best acting I have seen ever! Bring them the EMMYS NOW! Does anyone have ANY CLUE when Season FouR will START? It's going to be a LONG PAINFUL WAIT! Thanks Alan and everyone involved for bringing one of the best Shows ever created! FLAWLESS!!

Well, i enjoyed the hell out of it. Loved that we got to see their dad, wished he woulda been in more of this season. Loved that tour thru the afterlife with Claire, and her seeing Lisa and her telling claire to 'take care of mine and i'll take care of yours' and then claire dancing with the baby at the end was especially poignant. and Nate finally realizing he was going nowhere, great scene with him and his dad and lisa in the car..great scene! claire losing it at the wedding was at 1st hilarious and then sad. To everyone who dislikes these low key season enders, go watch a fucking michael bay movie.

I think the show must go on! It's truely a wonderful show that's full of adventure, mystery, hope and fear and love. Not to say the least, death. But, all the cast members are truely wonderful and it's my pick of the shows on Sunday nites. I just have to put everything aside to watch Six Feet Under... to see what happens next. It just gets better and better each show that airs. So, keep it coming!!! Five stars in my book of rating for Best Drama, Picture and Series of the year again... Ms. Mellie

Peter Krause was on Regis and Kelly last Friday. He said the next season doesn't start until June '04. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Since when does a mortuary make up baseball tees? Anyways, that was a great finish to a great and albeit too quick season. I'm upset that I have to wait an entire year to watch it again, but I'll be there. I'm glad to see that Lisa went out the series screaming at Nate like the beeotch that she is and not all cutesy like when she was talking to Claire. There were some pretty powerful and sad moments in that show. Very good. I'm glad that things have come full circle. Seems weird that it took a whole season. And about Futurama, I'm glad to see that we can finally watch the hostage episodes. Fuck FOX. Fuck them in their stupid asses for burying a show like this. They're fucking idiots!!!!!! I watched the DVD and listened to the commentaries by Groening and Company. Man, it sounds like the people at FOX really have their heads up their asses. But, that shouldn't come as a surprise.
-
I'm without my beloved HBO, and I would like it if someone summarized the whole show and the main plots of Claire, Rico, Lisa (dead, I see), Nate, David, Keith, Ruth, and anything else of interest. And any cool happenings like Dad or the opening death scene. Thanx a lot!
-
Ok, season 3 is over. Ruth's boy friend (the guy from Babe) is gonna turn out to be a bad guy somehow, he's too famous of an actor to consume himself for another season so something has to happen with him. Maybe Nicoli will come back and rescue Ruth since he owes her big from that money she gave him. Remember when Ruth asked Arthur if he ever had sex before, and he said "sort of." Well I predict we will find out he is a necrophiliac. Billy will commit Suicide because he can't deal with the fact he'll never be able to make love to his sister. Brenda will move in with the guy with the french horn while Nate contimplates suicide. Lastly just when David starts to feel comfortable with Keith again, Keith will choose to break up and leave him this time for someone else. Thats my prediction.
-
Agree with the posters who criticized the quality of the writing this season. Ball let them have too much free reign and one of the best dramas on TV nearly jumped the shark as a result. Russell and the art teacher was a thread that outstayed its welcome and telegraphed its "surprise outcome". Strauss did good work, but the Nate meltdown was totally inconsistent with the way they developed the character in the first two seasons. Hall did wonders as David, a thankless and thinly sketched role this time around, but the paintball episode and the threesome seemed like contrivances to move that plot section forward. Overall, we expected more depth, less fragmentary scenes, less instances that screamed "Odd pseudo Alan Ball moment". Again, whoever mentioned the thematic disconnect between the opening deaths and the respective episodes was right on. It didn't all "fit" as naturally as the first two seasons; the strain showed. And those who hated Lisa: I think that was the point - and the skill - of Taylor's finely calibrated performance. But I agree she should have just disappeared. So I guess we'll be back, hoping for better in June.
-
Overall I agree that the writing this season wasn't quite up to the standard previously set on the show - especially the pilot, which I watched again on DVD recently. Amazing hour of teevee. Still, not quite up to snuff on Six Feet Under is still far superior to practically anything else on teevee. I don't know if they're going to have Arthur back or if they're done with him, but the actor playing him, Rainn Wilson (that was him with the glasses in House of 1000 Corpses), just wrapped work on Mario Van Peebles' film (which I think is called "How to get the Man's Foot out of Your Ass") about the making of his dad's blaxploitation film "Sweet Sweetback's Badassssssssssssssss Song". Rainn has one of the lead roles in Janeane Garafolo's one-camera sitcom pilot (which will be considered as a midseason replacement, I hear), currently shooting in Vancouver. One might assume that Rainn's commitment to the sitcom would preclude Arthur's reappearance on SFU, but you never know....
-
Ep begins with a father and daughter letting a bird go that they nursed back to health, Dad tells daughter "they did a good thing and good things are rewarded." Next an actor is rehearsing lines while walking and a bird shits on him. He goes into a convenience store and is told he can't use the toliet, it's broken. He says he just needs to clean off the shit, clerk guy says OK. Once in there he forgets and flushes the toliet anyway. Clerk guy gets pissed and calls wife at home. She is getting bad reception while he rants and goes outside, pacing around to get better reception on the phone. THen a chunk of "blue ice" smashes in her head, fade to name a death. Pretty cool death actually.
The clerk guy goes to see NAte at Fisher and Sons. Nate looks like he slept sometime 3 days before and blows his lid at teh guy, causing them to lose the showing. He flips at Rico and David when they challenge him. Nate goes out at night and when the family is woken up by the baby, they all go to Nate's room to find him missing. He stumbles in with "what the fuck are you doing in my house?" and rants some more. Ruth and James Cromwell announce to the family they are getting married. Everyone is shocked. Nate is an asshole. James Cromwell tries to give advice to Nate and Nate explodes saying "You can sit in the tv room and watch videos, you can bone my mother, but don't ever fucking think you are my father." Later Nate goes to a dive bar and picks up a blonde girl. They go back to her place and she makes her 10 year old go in his bedroom while she strips down to have a go with Nate. Classy. Claire goes to the graveyard to see her dad's grave. Has some sort of weird hallucination/fantasy and sees him, Lisa, her aborted baby, and the druggie guy from last season (don't remember his name). She seems to be making some kind of peace, but it's not really explained. Nate gets a phone call later saying that a woman's remains have been found and they match Lisa's dental records. Next day, he gets in a massive fight with Ruth, blaming her for "keeping" him in LA when he wanted to go to Seattle. He never says anything about Lisa. Nate goes back to the bar, picks a fight and gets the shit beat out of him. Ruth and James Cromwell get married at an all night chapel in LA. Claire and a newly reunited David and Keith are in attendance. Nate drives drunk through LA while Lisa and Nathan Sr. tell him to just drive through the guardrail. Lisa says "You owe me." Nate repeats "I don't want to die..." over and over. There is a knock on Brenda's door, and NAte is there. He walks in without a word, bleeding and battered, and she puts her arm around him and he shuts the door. The words Lisa Jenkins Fisher - 1967 to 2003 appear on screen as it fades out.
Other news: David and Keith meet at the church and have a talk to work things out.
Rico goes to a strip club with a guy from dance class and ends up getting a BJ from a stripper in his car. Anjelica is still a total terror at home.
Arthur gives the happy couple a present for the wedding.
Brenda goes on a date with her next door neighbor.
Ruth hears sobbing in the kitchen during the reception and sees Nathaniel crying on the floor, he hides his head from her when she sees.
NOTE: Anyone else fill in what I missed. Order may be messed but this was the gist. -
Season 4 starts in June 2004. Quite a long wait.
-
I can't even think of anything else really - except Claire's druggie ex was
-
If you look at every season of SFU as a movie sequel, then the wait is a little more understandable. There's only 13 episodes per season, so they probably compress a season's entire production schedule within six months. ..... As for what will happen, who knows really. I doubt Alan Ball himself has it all figured out right now. How did Lisa die? Murdered? Accident? Suicide? I think this is up in the air for now by Ball. Arthur -- will he return or not? I think this depends on the availability of the actor; if he can return, Arthur will be back. If the actor cannot, no big deal; there will be a new intern next season. Hell, the same could go for Justin Theoroux's character. As for James Cromwell, I bet he's signed to appear in at least half of the episodes next season. As for what's up with his character, George: I think he's the real deal -- not a scam artist or anything. The "clues" we've been presented pointing toward this possibility are red herrings. However, maybe one of his wives and/or adult kids will show up next season, and reveal some zaniness about George that Ruth will have to deal with. I'd like to see Bettina (played by Kathy Bates) return for a couple of episodes and Patricia Clarkson (who plays Ruth's free-spirited sis), too. Olivier and Russell are gone -- they've been dropped completely, I believe. Claire is not going to be in art school next season -- but maybe she'll move out on her own, and we'll get to see crazy stories with her dealing with roommate(s). (Her taking care of Maya more, while the idea sounds sweet, is too predictable.) Rico is going to experiment more with infidelity (i.e. partying with that stripper and her friends). Keith will hopefully have a new job next season -- perhaps something like working as an investigator for an insurance company. David -- maybe he should start considering looking to going to law school. Nate? Frankly I don't know what could be up with him next season. Maybe he'll have been away for a few months in Seattle, with Maya, then returns to Los Angeles toward the end of the Season 4 premiere.
-
I think those of you that are faulting the third season for its relatively weak writing are dead-on. But for me, the biggest problem with the show right now isn't the character developments or the plot. It's the HUMOR! Where is the humor on this show? The first season was sad and moving and all of that, but it was also hilarious! Same with the second season. But I've laughed maybe twice this whole season. So I would say the problem with the writing is TONE. Another thing is that Richard Jenkins (Papa Fisher) was hardly in this season, and I believe it took away from some of the ironic edge of the first two seasons. And there isn't enough about the actual business. I know it's expensive to make those fake corpses, but dammit!, there are a lot of comedic/dramatic possibilities inside a morgue. Just because the Fisher family is used to living in a morgue doesn't mean WE the viewers should ever get used to them living there.
-
Actually, we don't know if he is dead. In Claire's "visit" to the afterlife, he said that she pictured him as having died. But, in "real life", we actually don't know if that is true. I think Claire pictured him that way because she thought that would be the only way for Gabe to find peace.
-
I just tuned into the piece of steaming shit for the first time since the first season and in the opening montage I see some blonde chick getting fucked doggy style and screaming fuck me at the top of her lungs. The chick from Can't Hardly Wait forgot how to smile and is it just me, or is Rachel Griffiths looking really strung out. Fuck that Alan Ball. Got lucky with American Beauty and has succeeded famously in passing this piece of shit off as a work of art.
