HBO's THE WIRE 2.1!!

Published at:  Jun 01, 2003 2:48:30 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s the return of McNulty, Greggs, Daniels, and the Barksdales! It’s like “The Sopranos,” only maybe better, and with more black people!

10 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

The detail, texture and nuance that made the first season of "The Wire" so demanding on viewers and such a hit with critics hasn't changed, though many of the settings in the second season have. … By shifting scenes to the harbor, creator and teleplay writer David Simon gets to explore new and fascinating patterns of cozy and criminal relationships between the bureaucrats and the outlaws, keeping the show as fresh as it is challenging. … Early episodes for the new season from Simon and company indicate there will be no letdown in the exquisite storytelling and fine character development. If anything, there will be even deeper pleasure in watching these characters evolve into a chorus of strangely harmonious and cacophonous voices.

The Los Angeles Times says:

Television's most undersung series in 2002 was "The Wire," a deluxe cops-and-crooks hour that opens its second season on HBO Sunday night as brainy and irresistible as ever. Anyone who doesn't watch should be arrested. … complex, densely written characters, first-class acting and measured storytelling so seductive that one critic (blush) pops in videocassettes of one episode after the other without a break. What? HBO sent only a few? Bummer. … What provocative, achingly good, high-achieving television. Pay attention this time, Emmy voters.

Entertainment Weekly says:

… the wry, nuanced cop show … pays off immediately. … it’s a contender – for one of the year’s best series. … Get hooked now.

I am – Hercules!!

    First?

    by aintitcooltalkba

This show is fantastic, although why does this site only post lame crap about Farscape and then throw a bone to six feet unda and the wire just so it can get some street cred when it sees (obviously) glowing reviews? These are some awesome spoilers though, at least for people who consider this site a reputible news outlet.

Holy moly! TV coverage! No spoilers though...

    by slimetime

Oh, well, Herc, thanks for letting us know what OTHER critics thought. Here it is folks, the best g.d. show on TV: that's right, better that 24, ALIAS, BUFFY, et. al. REally takes the sting out of HOMICIDE's departure.

yesss!!! I'm so psyched to see this show again

    by russman

Story telling the way it should be done. If all TV was pay TV I wonder if we'd have more good shows like this and less shitty shows. Oh well. Thank god for HBO!

    Omar don't scare

    by the colonel

This show RULES. Best cop show in a LONG time, HBO has raised the bar again. The politics, the detail, the paperwork...this show gets it all right. Awesome characters and acting as well. Lt. Daniels is a BAD ASS! Best voice on television! Can't wait to watch this season go. If you don't watch yet, you'd better start now. Most underrated show on TV.

Is that sort of like when a masochist has a hernia.... I prefer The Shield every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

    I recommend this show

    by maxsterling

This show is like the best aspects of NYPD Blue combined with the best aspects of the Sopranos. It's the most realistic cops and crime show ever, and since it's on HBO, they don't have to pull any punches! The show is actually funny sometimes too like last season when two cops had a whole conversation that consisted of just one word repeated over and over. Hilarious! But most of the time it's as serious as a crack vial and a 9mm between the eyes. Check out their web site at http://www.hbo.com/thewire/

Then watch Jeremiah over on Showtime this August!

    Clarke Peters

    by jtp8000

Great episode, would have been even better if Clarke Peters were in it (I noticed he's been bumped up to regular). Man deserves an emmy nod for last season

I'm waiting to see whether I like the dual storyline (Barksdales crew and the docks) and are awaiting the return of Omar

BTW, I nearly laughed my ass off on the scene between Rawls and Landsman when Rawls tells him how McNulty screwed them and the look on Rawls face when the red name went up on the board

    What a fucking treat!

    by boxcutter

Missed Season One - sorry. Honest, I'm catching up this week with friends' vids and the episodes on HBO On Demand. But this opener was just swell. Damn, it hits the spot - I could watch 3 or 4 hours of this every Sunday. Impeccable camerawork, great casting, sprawling labyrinthine script, natural soundtrack and (gasp!) respect for the audience's intelligence. Thank God there's still people at HBO to greenlight the right stuff. It's what "Big Apple" might have been if CBS hadn't shit their collective pants after three episodes.

    This show was boring

    by poopiebutt

I had no idea what the hell was going on....granted I did miss season 1, but still, this show will always be for me where everyone who dies on Oz ends up.

    by orthogon

Definitely the best show on TV and thanks to it being on HBO, we don't have to worry about the ratings while the rest of the world figures out what they are missing...If you have HBO do yourself a favor and check out it out. I need people to talkback with...

    Better than The Shield

    by ansai

At least that's what HBO thought. Story goes that HBO passed on The Shield because they already had The Wire, so the former ended out on FX.

    Life on the streets

    by mechakong

Any Homocide fans need to jump right onboard this baby right now since it's as close to a sequel as we're likley to get. Certain familiar faces are starting to pop up so why not throw in Melissa Leo Clark Johnson, Reed Diamond and Max Perlich. Masterful stuff from David Simon once again. Better than TV deserves, oh that's right it's HBO.

THE WIRE is HOMICIDE PART 2,a nd it's a great sequel.

    by slimetime

I found the premiere a little confusing, but liked it a lot more the second time. The second episode was great, though; I loved that all of our favorite homicide cops (minus McNutty, of course) are lazy loads who had their fingers crossed that their a-hole boss would keep them out of that murder investigation. WHy no TB for ep 2? Omar rules.
