Some Music News And Details On Sophia Coppola

Published at:  May 29, 2003 9:28:09 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I love THE VIRGIN SUICIDES. I adore it. I think it’s really beautifully crafted, and I’ve been eager to see Sophia Coppola direct again. This e-mail makes me ecstatically happy for all sorts of reasons. Read on and see if you feel the same:

Hey, Harry -

I'm a music journalist out in flyover country.

Don't know if this is out of your ballpark or not, but the new Sofia Coppola film, Lost in Translation, is going to have a soundtrack performed by the illusive My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields. Sheilds is a fractured guitar genius, so it looks like Coppola is going to be going two for two on producing fantastic soundtracks. Now, her films, however ... We'll see.

Lost in Translation stars Bill Murray and takes place completely in Tokyo. Interesting to say the least.

Like I said, this may be out of your ballpark, but I haven't seen it anywhere else online, so I thought I'd pass it on. Now hurry up and set up a music geek site and I'll deluge you with news.

Call me,

Raef Bogosian

Okay. One of the great things about THE VIRGIN SUICIDES was that amazing soundtrack by Air. Sofia’s shown that she has a particular knack for matching music to movie. Kevin Shields is a really interesting choice, and I admire anyone who uses a less-than-conventional composer for their movie.

More importantly, Bill Murray’s in this. And it’s set in Tokyo. And it’s got a great title.

I’m dying to know anything else about this. When’s it coming? Who else is in it? TellmetellmeTELLME!!

"Moriarty" out.

    Wow!

    by randomhearts

Two bits of Bill Murray news in as many days! Now if only they can find a part for Chevy Chase in this too, I'll die happy.

    Cast/Release Date/Etc.

    by daph26

The cast includes Bill Murray, Scarlett Johanssen, Anna Farris and Giovani Ribisi. Focus Features has the release scheduled for NY/LA on 9/13/2003. PLOT OUTLINE: This is the story of two Americans, a washed-up TV star (Murray) in town for a TV whiskey commercial shoot, and the (very) young wife (Johansson) of a photographer, who meet in Tokyo, Japan and end up spending a weekend hanging out there together on a "soul-searching mission."

    The HOOR-UHR!

    by alpojones

Excuse me, did this review at any time contain Bruce Campbell references or Wars/Rings/Matrix tidbit, what? It didn't? You have stolen space in my brain and filled it up with this nonsense. I shall have my revenge!

    kevin shields

    by albumental

The man's been a semi-permanent member of Primal Scream since "Vanishing Point" and is one reason why their last 3 albums have been so utterly brilliant.

The man is as near to genius as it gets. Looks like "Lost in Translation" is going to be some dark material.

    Roll on.

    I just didn't get "Rushmore"

    by rev_skarekroe

Lots of folks loved it, but I thought it was just another flick. Same with "Virgin Suicides". Wasn't awful or anything, but it sure wasn't the second coming of film. sk

The title of this movie sounds like a bad sequel to 'Lost in Spa

    by blue_in_the_face

    Reloaded sucked.

    Talented Kids

    by wong kar....why?

Both Sophia and Roman have made good movies with great soundtracks. I personally prefer Mellow's execellent contribution to CQ. But it seemes that both of them are stuck on the same classic artifices that made their father great in the 70's and bad in the 90's (what on earth was Jack?!?). I hope with their new projects they forge their own way to cinematic greatness. They've both got the talent.

Bill Murray in Garfield: Lost in Translation

    by mortsleam

One thing I never understood: Could Jon understand what Garfield was thinking? Was he, like, a pet psychic or something? And why did Odie only have two toes? *** I'll be looking forward to this one. Looks like Murray is shrewdly matching his talent with that of the rising new crop of filmmakers. Wes Anderson...Sophia Coppola...McG...

Is there a geek music site, lite the contributor asked for?

    by pumpymcass

That would be great. A place to hear about cool tours from Wilco and Sigur Ros and get early reviews of the new Radiohead album...Sigh...

  • But I can buy Moriarty knowing. I find it sorta incredible that Kevin Shields has been pulling a J.D. Salinger all these years, and suddenly he's gonna release a bunch of new music... as a soundtrack for a Sofia Coppola film. What the hell? I did like Virgin Suicides a good bit, though, and with Bill Murray and Tokyo in the mix, and a sweet title like Lost in Translation, and the inestimable Kevin Shields, of course... this could be really kind of great.

I am very interested in this project.

    by pumpymcass

I am haunted by The Virgin Suicides even though I wasn't completely taken with it. I got a creepy/nostalgic vibe out of it that I can't really compare to other films. I really can't wait until this one comes out. God bless the Coppola kids, and God save Papa Frank, a man whose brilliance was condensed into four films practically right in a row (Godfather, Godfather II, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now) and he has been wasting our time ever since. Oh and CQ was pretty nuts too.

    Geek music site: Pitchforkmedia.com

    by wasp

There's some other decent ones out there like Nude as the News and Stylus Magazine, but Pitchfork's really all you need.

don't mean to be annoying, but... her name is Sofia, not Sophia. If you all love her so much, or even hate her... spell her name right :)

Another great soundtrack in the making

    by elecam

Kevin Sheilds is absolutely amazing. I felt the Air soundtrack to "Suicides" was the only thing that made the movie work. The movie lost the point of view of the book. But just to hear new music from the My Bloody Valentine frontman will be worth the ticket purchase. I love the stuff he's been doing with Primal Scream, but to be able to get his own material again is fantastic news. Sofia has excellent taste in music.

Sofia Coppola- The Jar Jar Binks of the Godfather Trilogy

    by drthompson

I kinda Boycotted the Virgin Suicides on principle- But The closet Goth in me really wants to hear MBV on the big screen- and she landed John Murray's older brother is pretty cool- But as for Tokyo- It's the most racist city on the fucking planet- albeit the most sanitary- and they do have have the finest shitters I've ever had the pleasure to take a dump in- But they sure as shit hate us round eyes- and it is an equal opportunity racism- we were refused service in no less than 18 bars in one night- And the door frames are about 5'8 in any given establishment- I've got the scars to prove it- So the jury is still out for me on this one....
