From Norway, Koola looks at FINDING NEMO!

Published at:  May 27, 2003 12:28:34 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - Tomorrow night I check this baby out, but unfortunately I won't be able to take Kublakhan to the preview screening, cuz I didn't get enough passes... which is a shame, cuz as it is, he watches and points at my computer monitor to say, "Fish! Shark! Nemo dada! Dory! Shark Mean! Zombie Fish!" Yup, he understands it all! hehe... Anyway, I'll try to get my review in for you all late late tonight, I have to shoot some episodes for my SKY MOVIES NEWS show that begins in late June in the UK after the screening, so till later... Here's Koola...

Hey Harry!

So... I had the chance to see FINDING NEMO last night, and thought I'd send you my thoughts.

I'm a Pixar-fan. Been excited about them (as almost every other fanboy around) since... well, Toy Story. And I looked forward to NEMO with great anticipation.

And what a great ride it was. Again the vivid imagination and brilliant storytelling of the Pixar-crew comes to life, and with graphics even better than (ever) before, the visuals of NEMO almost turned out to be the most captivating. Not that the script lacks anything, it is a well-written father/son-roadmovie thingee with superb supporting characters (the blue memoryloss sidekick being my ABSOLUTE favourite). But with such amazing.. no, STUNNING, images to look at it's almost as if you don't need a fascinating story. But then you do, and the Great Sea-documentary-fascination with the images of this film turn into a moving, compelling film about a father who is over-protective, a son who needs to be allowed to live, and great friendship between fish (and sharks, and pelicans), who are not at all meant to all that friendly to each other. But the search for NEMO binds them all together.

I don't want to compare this to previous Pixar-films, because I can't separate them. They are all brilliant, and NEMO deserves as big an audience as the TS-films and MONSTERS INC.

The voicetalent is remarkable, though me not being able to identify them all, shrinks my ability to give proper credit. No time for IMDb today.

You'll all probably see NEMO anyway, so this'll probably just be a tease. I certainly recommend it. And I want to add something as well... not all norwegians are whalehunters.

Loved the whale in NEMO, and the film itself;

Koola

    Not to nitpick, but...

    by a winner is you

Where's the love for A BUG'S LIFE? Anytime anyone mentions Pixar, they typically leave this movie out of discussions. I dunno, maybe I'm crazy, but I thought it had one of the better "kids movie" villains ever (in Hopper), not to mention a really rousing finale. And it was totally charming and endearing and funny and exciting. Not to discredit the TOY STORYs or anything, but for me, this movie is the bar that I hold Pixar movies to. One that MONSTERS, INC. just fell short of. It certainly seems as if FINDING NEMO could be their best movie in six years, easily... guess I'll find out soon!

    Pixar rules

    by tko

Wasn't it not long ago that rumors were spreading saying that Finding Nemo was getting bad reactions from the bigheads in Pixar, that this might be their WORST effort yet? God bless Pixar...whatever it was they did to fix up the pic since then was nothing short of MAGIC. The trailers and TV spots just keep getting better and better, and I can't WAIT to see it come this Friday.

...so where are we going to start hearing about Cars and The Incredibles?

you're not crazy, i absolutely loved bug's life... in fact, i'm starting to get the urge to go out and buy the ts movies AND bug's life... before they go on moratorium.
i disagree that monsters fell short though, i thought that movie raised the bar above all others.
can't wait to take my 6 year old sis to see nemo though
here's hoping this talkback stays clean

    Is 25 on tonight?

    by retrace

I heard that at the end Nemo gets flushed with a terd the size of a small zeppelin. Why do they have to have celebrity voices for these characters? Does it add anything? I hope I can watch this movie without picturing that dyke Ellen whenever that blue sidekick chimes in. I never got passed Ramano's voice in Ice Age.

    A Bug's Life

    by banky the hack

I thought A Bug's Life was much more entertaining than either of the Toy Story movies. Monsters Inc. was a little too saccharine, but still great. But A Bug's Life, now that was funny...with the pill bugs and such? The whole bug city thing was really well done, and Hopper was great (as was their scene in Tijuana or wherever). Yeah, ABL doesn't get any respect in the Pixar-pantheon.

    A Bug's Life

    by thing-fish

I would have to agree with "A Winner Is You" and "Banky the Hack"; A Bug's Life is a great movie, Hopper is a great villain. What's more, the bird is as perfect of a Movie Monster as you can get. I think I remember Harry commenting on that, as well.

  • Their flicks are great family-oriented light-hearted sentimental CGI comedies that focus on cute non-human characters and have all kinds of sight gags accompanied by Randy Newman music... Anyone else see the problem here? I, personally, cannot wait for Pixar to break up with Disney.
