Treb in Cannes: The T3 Press Conference!

Published at:  May 17, 2003 7:45:18 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with Treb's coverage of the T3 press conference at Cannes with Andrew Vajna and Mario Kassar. Apparently they're confirming that there will be no advance screenings of T3 anywhere... That means one of two things... Either there's a huge secret to the ending that they want under wraps.... or this thing sucks the chrome off the bumpers of cars on interstate freeways. Here ya go...

Harry, people of film,

It's a bizarre place here in Cannes. There are lots of
people, not linked to film at all, but still wishing
to gain attention for something. For example:

A moment ago, i saw a hot girl, dressed in pink
feathers, walking a pink colored poodle. If I was a
dog, then i would think the poodle looked kinda hot
too, but alas, I am no poodle. There's also this guy
who.. Well, it's an extention of those guys who try
and do their best to do a portrait of you in the
street and sell it to you for lots of money. This guy,
however, he has tree trunks and chisels out your
likeness into a bloody tree stump. Okay, talented
stuff, but who on Earth wants and could, take a tree
stump of their face home with them?

Today is the May 17th. I'm at the Variety head
quarters where a T3 conference is soon to commence.

The tech guys test out their mics. A hot Variety chick
decides where to place the name cards. Mario Kasar,
Peter Bart, Moritz Borman and Andy Vajna. She exits
the room and returns quicker than i cqn breathe out,
shaking her head and tutting.

She removes Mario's name card and a tech guy says:
"he's not coming?" - she shakes her head, tutting. A
Brit journo shouts "Surely he can wake up in time!
It's gone half ten!" The name cards are re-arranged
once more.

I overhear that Kevin Costner is in town, arriving
yesterday and his first visit to Cannes. He's here to
promote his, no doubt Costner-length, Western, Open
Range. I peer over a copy of Moving Pictures and see
some fantastic screen shots of the film. It looks
gritty and raw. I like Costner. I liked Waterworld. I
say to myself as I wait. Everybody is so late. I look
at the freebie stuff I was handed on the way in. A DVD
of all of the BMW films. I then wonder if Clive Owen
will be James Bond and then my mind wanders some more.
I am so bored upon my metal seat.

I stare at Vanja's name card and think about his
involvement with Die Hard 3 and my past conversations
with his development guy regarding my probably too
much covered Die Hardest script. "Call when T3 and 4
are done." Said the creative exec. That was a polite
way to say call us in two years time.

Such suspense for a bloody press conference. And here
we go. Vanja sits five feet away. It's close anyways.
I could burp and he could smell it, that how close he
is to me. Not a good example, but hey.

Peter Bart from Variety quizzes Andy and Mori about T3
about a host of topics. "Why is it an R rated movie?"
Asks Bart. "Because my name isn' Spielberg." Replies
Vajna. The audience laugh as he lights his cigar. "We
haven' submitted it yet, so who knows what the rating
will be? The Matrix is an R" He continued.

Bart asks if there are plans for another Rambo movie.
"We spoke to Sly about it many times, but we dont own
that franchise anymore. Miramax does." Says Vajna,
continuing with; "Maybe he'll just give it to us."
Bart then came back with; "Maybe Harvey can be Rambo!"

They're asked on budgets for T3 and Vajna wouldnt and
has never discussed it. "Around 22 dollars" He says
jokingly. Bart then asks why there isn't any plans to
show any test screenings or clips. "The press were
shown 7 minutes or so, but I don't like doing that
anymore." Says Vajna. He says it can ruin a film.

A question rose, asking what Jim (Cameron) thought or
thinks of this project. "He's pretty pissed." Said
Vajna. "We helped him out with T2 when his career
needed a lift. I thought he was a friend, but
obviously not." Said Vajna once more, re-lighting his
stogie.

Bart asks if T4 is likely and Mori perked up.
"Absolutely." He said, with Vajna butting in with;
"I'm not that cocky. We'll see how this one fairs
first."

A question from the floor from some guy who was beaten
with the ugly stick asks if Arnold will be a good guy
again, with Vajna quick to respond with; "He was good
in T2. Just go see the move and you'll see some
surprises."

A few Carolco questions are banded around. I raise my
hand for a final question to this panel and ask.
"Andy, you made a bunch of films with your Cinergi
Productionns including the last Die Hard movie. Are
you involved with the next one?"

Vajna replied; "Unfortunately not. I sold the rights
back to Fox. There's one already being thought about
and it'll do well. It's a good thing."

"Can I come to your party tonight?" I ask.

"Have you gotta ticket? If you haven't, how can I get
in with you?" He replies, with the audience laughing
and taking notes and fiddling with their cameras.

The panel are about to close, when Jonathan Mostow and
Mario Kasar turn up, grinning, knowing they no doubt
have a huge smash on their hands.

Mostow is quizzed on his filling Jim's so called shoes
and says it was an odd and quick experience. He stated
that him and his college room-mate rewrote the script
twice and everybody was happy. We'll see how it goes"
He said.

We will indeed see how it goes.

I get a picture with Andy, saying; "This is probably
the closest i'll get to work with you." - "You don't
know that for sure." He said, joining Mario as he
walked away.

    by silvio dante

They didn't seem to want to talk about the film at all, huh? Or did the guy who submitted this omit the bits with the goods. And no screenings? Usually this means big time suckage... I think the case is as follows: the product is very average, exactly like the trailers make it look like. So by nixing the intel they try to build some hype, anything. Any hype is good hype. Bad word pre-premiere might just sink this thing: Geeks are suspicious cause Cameron's not on board + it's been a long time since the last one, Joe Public grew up and has an HBO, no time for nostalgia for him, sadly even The Oak ain't the draw he used to be... And all this talk about T4 already? Next thing you know they have Joss Whedon writing it and cloned Linda Hamilton running around...

There's no support system for aspiring writers at all. The studios expect everyone to write their masterpiece right out of film school, and have no interest in nurturing or developing talent, which is why screenwriting is in the sorry state it is today.

What a liar. Idiot statements like this almost make me want to not see the movie, knowing immoral bastards like this will reap the financial reward of me attending. For the record, there was a great article in the LA Times a bit back outlining the whole development process of T3, which was most notable for the fact about how Vajna and Kassar outright LIED to Cameron's face and manipulated events so they could sneak around his back to acquire the Terminator rights, hence why Cameron IS pissed at them. Cameron's anger is deserved not only because he got screwed over, but because idiots like Vajna don't even want to acknowledge Cameron had an emotional stake in the Terminator since he CREATED the fucking franchise! After reading this report, Vajna sounds like an ass from his short and truly non-witty comments. And the notion that Cameron's career was in a slump and he needed Vajna's help for a "lift" is even more laughably pathetic.

Somehow I missed that period. As I recall it, each one of Cameron's films was bigger than the last. Either we all weren't paying attention, or Vajna is a self-aggrandizing ass. Think hard before choosing. And finally, I'll be shocked if T3 turns out to be either good or successful, much less both. I hate the idea; it's a big step backward in ambition and originality, and I hope it sinks so fast it pulls "Bad Boys 2" down in the resulting sinkhole.

Aliens 2 and T2 got him out of that rut. I heard that they did offer the film to Cameron, but he refused.

Commando Cody is right that T3 producers are scums

    by fd resurrected

I couldn't have said it better. Vajna and Kassar are typical scum producers who are only interested in getting richer from T3 revenue rather than contribute creativity like William Wisher and James Cameron do together. I saw their producer credit list in this talkback and 90% of the movies they produce are irredeemable crap (Rambo First Blood Part II included, mainly because Sly re-wrote the script and excised Jim's realized character development and reasonably plausible storyline). I know some producers actually work hard to keep the movie projects afloat by providing funds and keeping track of financing, but Vajna and Kassar are no exceptions because they suck hard-working creative people's energy in order to enriched themselves and live in style on the Carribean Islands. I'd read LA Times article on how V/K fucked over Jim on Terminator rights but it's in the archives on LA Times web site and I wouldn't shell out a few bucks just to read a goddamned article. I thought the high financial catastrophe after Cutthroat Island bombed at the box office (almost as bad in parallel to the megaflop The Adventures of Pluto Nash and the audience at a dollar theatre heckled C.I. as a bloated and uberlame piece of shit) doomed Carolco Pictures studio and V/K's career but they came back from bankruptcy and formed C2. T3 is highly unlikely to flop although it might not make as much money as the international gross of T2 and I don't think T3 will be as good as the first two in terms of character development and emotional depth. Here's hoping V/K's next film project by their way of exec producing gets obscenely overbudget and the movie bombs at the b.o. so bad they won't have a career as producers anymore. Next there's Peter Guber & Jon Peters, Jerry Bruckheimer, Joel Silver (with rare exceptions - he helped get The Matrix movies produced) and more still laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of creative and original scripts...

Like a lot of people I've felt that there is really no reason to make a Terminator 3 (other then $$$), but I've been hoping we'll at least get a decent actioner out of it all the same. Usually, no advance screenings is a warning sign of bad things to come. I hope I'm wrong. As for the Matrix: reloaded, I'm gonna see it tomorrow. I have a feeling that the backlash against it is related to it not being able to quite live up to the hype, which isn't really fair. For another example of this phenomenom: Phantom Menace, while it had more then it's share of problems, wasn't near as bad as it was made out to be--but the overwhelming hype before the flick made it seem so. All the black and latino families I saw couldn't have cared less ifthere were feces on the movie screen, they would have worshipped Scooby as if he was Jesus himself (rank you, rank you!). I'm just slightly pissed from selling tickets today for 8 hours to teenage jerks who try to F$% with my head and get past me and my cohorts, so it came as no surprise that by the end of the night tonight, my face had screwed into the grimace of Agent Smith. But seriously, a press conference like this sounded just like a big waste of time to me. It's basically a 'Ha ha Jamie boy, we got your toys now, and what're YOU gonna do about it?' Just wait, come a year later, these guys are gonna have their names plastered on some publicity material as saying 'from the producers of Terminator 3.' and as for Die Hard, let it just DIE...hard.

    creative slump???

    by roguescribner

WTF? Cameron made THE TERMINATOR and that put him and Arnie on the map. After which he had a writing credit on RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (which made money, BTW), directed ALIENS (one of Fox's biggest hits that year) and then directed THE ABYSS, which cost a lot and didn't make a lot, but you can thank that horrible theatrical edit for that. Regardless, it generally got good reviews and ushered in a new era with computer special effects technology. Then he made T2. So where exactly is this "string of flops" at??? Bunch of ill informed losers on this board, I tell ya. BTW, T3 will never meet its potential w/o Cameron's involvement. THE TERMINATOR was his baby. The movie may be okay, but it could've been great with its father at the helm. L8r

    by sir-sledge450

$93,260,000, and as it started with a thursday release, its 4 day total is.....$135,768,000, which, in my opinion, is a phenomenal succes, and in many ways, beats spiderman. For instance, if spiderman opened on a thursday, the $115,000,000 it posted would have been nearer $95-100,000,000, and plus that was basically a kid freindly film. The matrix, although popular with kids & teens, isnt marketed totally at that audience. Plus id imagine the matrix screen average was higher. Still, it shows how well X2 Has done. Thats now on 174,000,000, after 17 days, so tickle me pink. And a big shout out to A mighty wind, who on 770 screens, was still the 6thth highest screen average in the top ten. "Aliens" predates "The Abyss", so your contention that "Aliens" helped to pull him out of a career funk caused by "The Abyss" is a bit confusing. At any rate, as anyone who follows movies knows, it takes more than one bomb to destroy a profitable career in Hollywood. Hell, when was the last time Kevin Costner made a successful film? The industry certainly hasn't stopped taking his calls, have they? That's why the idea that Cameron needed Vajna for a career boost is ludicrous. The idea of a Terminator sequel wasn't exactly a hard sell (at least until the budget projections came through). And frankly, since Carolco was largely responsible for the bloated, overpriced mess that the movie industry has become, I have trouble believing anything these two have to say about it.

    Obsucre Reference

    by lamerz

You are a worthless hateful piece of shit, you know that? Why don't you get a clue and stop broadcasting the propaganda that you've been brainwashed with. Besides, you think you are going to win over people to your side by spamming a fucking MOVIE bulletin board with your bullshit? How about actually discussing movies on here, you toilet full of butt-pee? ------------ Now, to be somewhat on topic here, unlike Obscure Reference, I can't wait for T3, starring my favorite conservative actor in Hollywood, and the next Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. I was hesitant at first, with the previews looking really shitty, but the international trailer by Sony and the trailer shown prior to Matrix Reloaded got me excited. Now.... when the hell are the ROTK trailers coming???????

    X2 vs Reloaded

    by lamerz

X2 0wn3d Matrix Reloaded. The second Matrix film was a bloated unworthy follow up to the original. X2 expanded upon and blew away its original, putting forward better characters a fuller story, and better FX and direction.

T3-This summers little blockbuster that might...

    by reidfleming

Be pretty good, have all the knockers seen 'Breakdown'? a ball tearing directing job that shows Mostow was ready to take a crack at the next level. The only script review I've seen was from the jurassic Tedi Serafian draft, so, fingers crossed, I reckon T3 will deliver a hard working, solid summer action fest.

As for Andy Vajna, jeez - it's worse than sad, it's simple that this two bit pro wrestling manager of a producer would be negative toward Cameron, after all, one should always take notice of a man whose back catalogue of cinematic abortions include 'Judge Dredd'
