HELLBOY picture - Aw Crud He Looks Cool!

Published at: May 12, 2003, 7:06 p.m. CST

Hey folks, Harry here.... Looks like Guillermo Del Toro and the crew at Revolution Films and the folks behind Hellsite.Com have finally unleashed their first picture of HELLBOY. So it'll be interesting to see how all of you HULK bashers like this, since this is the "anti-CG" route, what with the genius of Rick Baker behind the creation of that profile... and ya know, looks pretty damn sweet. Personally, I just can't wait to see a trailer for this sucker, cuz this is a movie that genuinely has quite a few things in it that we've never seen on the big screen... not by a long shot, and instead of meaningless non-stop unemotional battles... here all the action, at least in the script, means something. Enjoy...

    Hehe, lanyard.

    by Gary Yogurt

Lanyards are cool. Also, did the horns give him back & neck problems? I would have kept them. This looks too cool, the nose is just right.

    this is the perfect....

    by thinboyslim

...remedy to all those cg characters. fuck hulk. fuck master dobie. fuck scobby. long live hellboy!!!

  • May 12, 2003, 7:18 p.m. CST

    kind of anticlimatic...

    by jimmy_009

I was looking forward to what they were going to do with hellboy - there was a lot of potential there, but it looks like they just painted him red and glued those horns on his head. They didn't even do anything to his hands... Should have gone with something a bit more dramatic I think, maybe not CG, but this isn't exactly the groundbreaking makeup work from this angle. The movie will still rock I'm sure.

  • May 12, 2003, 7:19 p.m. CST

    Works for me......

    by Doom II

He looks like he should. Hopefully this thing has a hard-R rating and some amazing creature f/x. Always found Hellboy to be an interesting character, although I'm sure religious organizations will have a field day when this comes out.

  • May 12, 2003, 7:27 p.m. CST

Wow... they got the look down *JUST* right...

    by Otter

... I can't see anyone who could find anything wrong with this make-up, and if they can, I'd like to see what their improvement might be with it. Don't worry, folks, I'm sure we'll hear them.

    Looks like Hellboy to me

    by Sci_Fi_Wasabe

Long as he isn't wearing a Punisher T-Shirt, what's to bitch about. Can't wait to see the other hand, feet and tail though.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF GEEKS: 1999-?

    by Stormin

That's right, spring 1999 marked the beginning of an age that we will all look back at in our old age and call the Golden Age of Movie Fandom. From the release of The Matrix, to Episode I (for most of us), then X-Men, Fellowship of the Ring, Spider-Man, Episode II, The Two Towers, Daredevil, X2, soon the Matrix Reloaded, and upcoming stuff like this, this era will be marked as the greatest age for our kind ever.

  • May 12, 2003, 7:32 p.m. CST

    But when will it end?

    by Stormin

But when will this great age end?

  • May 12, 2003, 7:33 p.m. CST

    Kicks Thomas Jane's boo-tay...

    by SamuraiSpider

This is exactly the way to build up buzz with the fandom at large. Make the lead LOOK like the comic book Hellboy and give us all a look at him at his insanely large gun-toting best. Damn!

    Jeers to Ron Perlman

    by shamrocks33

Ron Perlman can't act. He's so wooden and boring. How does he keep getting roles?

  • May 12, 2003, 7:45 p.m. CST

    Very nice, very nice

    by Terry_1978

As long as they maintain the size of Hellboy, which I'm sure they will do, it'll be a go. And there is no way in hell they could have done this with the Hulk...dude is too outlandish to be done with makeup effects, it was CGI all the way, no question.

I swear, you 'tards would never be happy with a movie, even if the studios arranged a "happy ending" with each viewing of the movie.

    UGLY HELLBOY!

    by dogmeatsausage

I love Hellboy but this looks pathetic! I used to think more movies should use make-up fx but not if it looks like this! the Legend devil looked WAY better than this red man. This looks so cheap where is his heavy brow? his hands suck and the horns are just garbage still waiting for a decent comic book movie.

    meaningless non-stop unemotional battles

    by brainticket

The boy looks exactly as he should look, and everyone knows what perlman will bring to this part - he is amazing. Harry is right, Hellboy has a story and a philosophy...that's what will make it great! It will be what matrix once was...different

  • May 13, 2003, 2:48 a.m. CST

Hellboy is one sexy tomboy beanpole.

    by Larry_Talbot

I'm not sure how or why that is cool. I expected something more extreme or interesting from Rick Baker. Instead we have what looks like a Star Trek alien. I'll hold my breath and wait to see what he looks like full figure and from the front and, of course, moving, but I have to say it - he looks a damn sight cooler in the comic.

  • May 13, 2003, 4:01 a.m. CST

    Geekgasim!

    by Karnov

I had shivers looking at the pic and an uncontrollable urge to squeal in glee as it downloaded!. It's tough to translate comic books to photorealism but IMO Rick Baker has done a good job, ageing 70 pornstar pony tail and all! This is now my most anticipated move, the one that will make me check left and right before crossing a road and avoid toys that may contain a choking hazard risk because I need to see this movie.

    by ClancyWiggum

I'm a big fan of both del Toro and Mignola so I have really high hopes for this. It'll be cool. Re: Doom II- Guillermo has said that this will be a PG-13 (I can't remember where, but I read it online a while ago). IMHO it's completely appropriate. The Hellboy comics are pretty violent, but never gory. I want this to do well at the box-office so that we get to see Roger the Homunculus ("Hellboy named him in the car") in a sequel.

  • May 13, 2003, 8:02 a.m. CST

This comes to show you that there are people with very different

    by Blue_In_The_Face

Look at this talkback. Even if movie producers use real life models people are going to bitch. Most people don't understand the Hulk for example, and they ask why is it CGI and what not. I've heard people saying that he looks like a big action figure! Hellboy looks decent. The horns are kind of cork-looking but for the most part it looks good. Oh and Hulk bashers can kiss Harry's ass.

  • May 13, 2003, 8:04 a.m. CST

There Ain't No Pleasing Some Wankers

    by Rogman

But for REAL Hellboy fans, this rocks!! And so it should do, as Mignola is working closely with the design people on this film. Can't wait to see more - the hand, the cloven hooves, Abe etc. Wonder if they'll run with the chest tattoo/scarification design, or will they think it's too "Nightcrawler".....

    Nice!

    by Nice Marmot

However, I thought that w/ Ron Perlman's distorted mug they could have cut back on makeup. They made him look 90% more good looking than he's ever been. That aside, I'm getting a good feelin' about this one!

  • May 13, 2003, 2:49 p.m. CST

Fuck CGI, fuck them up their stupid USB ports

    by SuperTooth

Hellboy looks awesome, fuck CGI and gay computer shit. Hulk looks like shit. I'm def gonna still see it, so hopefully the movie will be good enough to overshadow the stupid look of the Hulk. Just like how the Japanese version of the Ring was so much cooler for all special fx parts versus the American version with the fake looking cgi.

  • May 13, 2003, 9:39 p.m. CST

    Two corks in his head....

    by allykatD

that's what his horns look like. They look like someone corked two big holes in his head. Hmm. Hellboy was never a favorite of mine, I'll probably go see the movie, though.

  • May 13, 2003, 11:10 p.m. CST

    gayness from his anus

    by SHABBAZZ!

Hellboy looks like a midget. All the make up makes his head look too big and his arms too small by comparison.

  • May 14, 2003, 2:45 a.m. CST

I can't believe you people don't know what the "corks" are ...

    by Red Giant

I don't even know this character at all, but it is obvious those are just stubs for CGI horns (duh). You don't want real horn prosthetics since it would tilt him off-balance by at least a little bit. Enough to make movements and stunts very awkward, both in speed, balance and ergonomics. They probably have some real prosthetics also, for sort of the "hero" shots. Who knows what other CGI enhancements will be layered over what you see here.

  • May 14, 2003, 5:56 a.m. CST

    He looks exactly like Hellboy.

    by Lujho

This looks EXACTLY like the Hellboy movie poster that was given out at some convention a while ago. It was drawn by Mike Mignola but in a slightly less stylized style than his usual style. In fact it's obvious that this photo was the basis for that picture.************** Mignola's usual stye is *very* stylized... his people don't look the way people really look, it stands to reason that his Hellboy doesn't look the way Hellboy would really look if he were real. If the film-makers had tried to create something that looks *exactly* the way Hellboy looks in the comic it would have looked silly, and clashed with the look of the other characters.************* For those who don't know, the 'corks' *are* horns, but they will not be extended by CGI (why would the ends of them be painted if that was the case?). That is they way they look in the comic... he sands them down.************* In short, I think this looks great. I was expecting the make-up to be a little heavier, with a bigger brow and chin etc, but it's probably better that its more subtle. That's definitely not Pearlman's normal nose though, and there seems to be some chin enhancement. I would have liked to see someprosthetics on Hellboy's non-stone hand though... something to make them a little more chunky... slightly squared off fingers perhaps. And no glowing eyes? That's a shame also, perhaps his eyes will be glowing (or perhaps just coloured contacts) in the film.

  • May 14, 2003, 6:59 a.m. CST

    I don't get it

    by BlackThorne

Why do people who obviously don't even know who Hellboy is post here anyway and bitch about how he looks. And what's wrong with you guys that demand Hellboy to look more like in the comics? How about they just dump Pearlman and the rest of the cast and make an animated movie? Whould that please you? Because that's the only way to make comic book characters look more like in the comics without looking goofy.

    whatever

    by beelliot

I have seen this make up in real life and it looks great on Ron. This picture is a poor example of how HB actually looks in person and on screen. This publicity shot should not have been released as the first picture. The make up is great & this picture does not do it justice. BTW, Rick Baker did not sculpt this make-up. His best artist did (kudos to you M.R.! you did Mignola's great artwork justice!) I cannot wait to see the finished product. Guillermo's enthusiasim & Ron as HB will be eye candy & a thrill to witness. SO... WHATEVER to you idiot wannabees who know NOTHING about the time and energy that goes into making a film, creating the make-up for creature effects & appreciating the beauty of a well sculpted make up. You will all be proven wrong when the movie comes out. Leave make-up critiques to professionals who know how poorly shot publlicity photos with poor lighting screws up an awsome make up! (however, I do agree that the horns should have been painted darker!)
