Is UNDERWORLD Changing Its Title'!
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Well... maybe. Or maybe not. Hard to tell.
I got an e-mail from Brad Miska over at BLOODY-DISGUSTING, and it seems that their site was sent a scan of a test screening pass for UNDERWORLD. Only it wasn’t called UNDERWORLD. It was called THE COVENANT.
Here’s the e-mail I was sent.
This is a pretty awesome exclusive we received regarding Kate Beckinsale's 'Underworld.' It seems the title is being changed:
Links always appreciated.
Thanks!
BradIt’s not common for them to use actual fake names for films on test screenings. I’ve seen them go through a series of titles while trying to find one, and I’ve seen them leave the titles off completely to try and throw us off their trails, but fake titles are unusual. So are they going to change this title after they’ve already started running trailers and posters with the title UNDERWORLD?
Maybe I’ll get some official word in the days ahead. Until then, it’s all so mysteeeeeeeeerious...
"Moriarty" out.

Covenant sounds like a Nun movie, or a Mel Gibson directed pic

Either way. Count me out. But Underworld? Hell if the title is good enough for Delillo its good enough for me. And Beckinsale needs a good flick, her last one was Cold Comfort Farm. For all you fan boys that one has Ian McKellan as a fire and brimstone preacher. Great flick. I own the like 1 DVD copy in existance. Great transfer!

that Soderbergh flick you're talking about it "The Underneath".

I meant to say. I can write properly, I swear.

...because Don DeLillo's UNDERWORLD is my favorite book of all time, and I'd hate for them to have to change the title for the film adaptation because they're afraid of being confused with some werewolf movie.

Hey idiot marketing guys - go with your first instinct!

"Underworld" sounds like something teenage boys and girls with lots of disposable income want to see. "The Covenant" sounds like one of those Kirk Cameron-starring "Left Behind" evangelical bullshit films. Also, "Sin Eater" is a lot better than "The Order," and "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" sounds so much more over-the-top and fun than "The League." What's the matter with you people?
-
Perhaps the screen rights to the novel have been sold, and the producers with the rights have convinced the MPAA that they should have the title. Some of my suggestions for a new title (serious): "Dark World", "The World of Night"
-
You heard it here first.

The guy handing out the passes told us that the title on the passes was fake. We asked him if Underworld was still the real title and he said yes.
-
Underworld is your favorite book of all time? Really? I thought it was pretty good, but wow. I thought White Noise was a better novel, and both were overrated. Whatever, opinions, ya know? .... Back to the subject at hand. I don't think they'll change the title with all the promotional material that's already been released, a website up and running, etc... And I doubt anyone's going to confuse it with the DD novel.
-
Setting aside my personal feelings that everything I've seen about Underworld the movie has made it look like watered down ass; and that a title change is the number two sign a movie is complete ass (the number one reason being ads that feature exit polls from people that have just seen it); Underworld is the title of an award winning Don DeLillo novel. If there is any movie deal connected with it, that may be the reason for the name change.

So the vampires will be Elites & the werewolves Grunts? Where does Master Chief come in?
-
I have already seen commercials for it and the posters are up in theaters. Why change it now? The title fits, and they already have started spending the money on it. Tell the studio heads to show a little sack, and run with the idea they bought from marketing. It doesn't matter how stupid the title sounds - if you MARKET it enough, people will go see it. Don't market it, and you cannot guarantee they will.
-
The title is and remains Underworld. I just verified it with someone in the know.
-
This movie could be called anything and it wouldn't matter to me because this movie will kick ass and keep September interesting movie wise

Gotta love how a couple of frelling nitwits at this site with nothing better to do can make a major corporation have to deal with their piddly attempts to seem like they're important. Anyhoo, without further adieu....
Official statement regarding Underworld title:
May 7, 2003 -
...is that it's a Screen Gems release. That's where Columbia dumps things they don't want soiling the Columbia name. Like Disney uses it's Hollywood Pictures division.
-
Guess the mind is starting to go...
-
Then you'll get a great Victoria's Secret commercial tie-in.
Wonder I didn't think of it earlier. -

They would not even dream of changing the name at this time.
by smeg for brains
Not with all of the promotion they have been dog on it. It would be a total waste of money, and it would seriously ruin any anticipation already built up for this film.

This has happened a couple of times. I have a friend that went to see Star Wars Ep. I and got a ticket for something really weird (the name escapes me at the moment).
Since many prints are sent on commercial airliners, highly anticipated and advance prints often have code names while in transit. This helps to keep well-connected thiefs from stealing an entire print of LOTR or Matrix:Reloaded.
Many theaters are responsible to create ticket names "in house" (thus you could get a ticket to see Metrix:Reloaded). It is likely the print was shipped under the code name Covanent as opposed to Underworld.
