Another FREDDY VS. JASON Review!!

Published at:  Apr 25, 2003 8:17:33 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I’m still getting tons of mail about this one, and people seem eager to get a look at it, or any footage from it. I know that New Line has a very specific plan in place, and that it doesn’t start until some of the big summer movies have already gotten out of the way. Seems like a good idea. Right now, all anyone really seems to care about is MATRIX or X2 or HULK, with a few far-sighted readers still focused on RETURN OF THE KING and KILL BILL. I don’t think it’s time for people to get as worried as this spy did about how New Line’s going to handle the film, or if they’re going to “drop the ball.” I’m fairly sure they’d like to turn this one into a hit, and they’ll get aggressive about it soon.

Check this out:

yoyo it's liquid ivory.

its taken me a bit to get this done but i wasnt sure other reviews had posted online yet. spoilers follow so be prepared. im happy to report that FREDDY VERSUS JASON is not nearly the catastrophe it could have been. it seems like the buzz online was shitty, but the crowd i saw it with loved it. i know id want to know all the details so here goes.

i was a last minute joiner through dumb luck at the screening on Thursday (in Redondo). im a big horror fan and more of a FRIDAY THE 13TH fan and i was pumped to see this puppy. I've followed the ups and downs (kelly from destiny's child? no kane hodder?) of the project for what feels like forever and was cringing when they hired Ronny Yu. i hated BRIDE OF CHUCKY with a passion and FORMULA 51 sucked hard. however im happy to say that he has redeemed himself in my eyes BIG TIME. the movie was everything i could've hoped for with more red stuff than ever before. thank you, thank you, thank you! the new Jason is, i think, the very best one yet. i have a hard time saying that cause i love kane, but after seeing the new guy (what is his name?) i think it was time for a change. hes a much badder Jason in this one and i hope we can see him in the role again. he gets to dominate the kills and has a few classics. there is a cornfield party that he slices and dices and he and Freddy get to split a kill in.

the final battle actually takes place at camp crystal lake, where Jason and Freddy have the best fight in horror history. its like watching the monsters on speed. people were going nuts. you see a lot of retarded jason and even normal freddy. there is aboslutely no tommy jarvis, but heather langenkamp gets a shout out. they had a montage with clips from previous freddy movies but none from Jason's so that pissed me off a little. i was shocked to see mrs. vorhees appear (in an unexpected way) so it seems like this movie has details for the real fans to enjoy. its basically a big bloody fight that will leave fans of both guys (and gore in general) satisfied.

i didnt really like the ending which was a groaner. otherwise it was a really good time and just what i was hoping for. robert englund fans will be totally satisfied. hes got some great lines and can play freddy in his sleep. lets hope they dont drop the ball and actually push the movie unlike JASON X. we'll find out in august. and where is the trailer?? the movie is out in august and we havent seen anything. i have a bad feeling this one may not get any support. New Line - the movie was good! give us the marketing push we want! this is a dream movie for so many of us!! dont let us down!

It’s always good to let a studio know when you want more of something, but hopefully this particular message has been sent loud and clear with the recent screenings.

"Moriarty" out.

I have to admit, I thought Bride of Chucky was pretty clever...

    by california split

That whole Chucky thing ran out of steam even before the first movie was over, but BOC ended up mostly enjoyable. Now if Freddy Vs. Jason could be servicable, then we might have one of the greatest guilty pleasure movies ever created.

Kane Hodder, what's the big deal?

    by daniel1138

I like to think I'm a fan of the Friday films, but I have to say, I don't quite get the attachment to Kane Hodder as Jason, what exactly set his Jason apart? From rewatching the films, the only thing I see he does different as Jason is that he breathes really hard, like chest heaving hard, is this characterization? He also played the least effective Jason yet, just watch the finale of Jason Goes to Hell, all the sudden we have a Jason who can't kill an unarmed man and wrestles with him for what seems like 15 minutes, where's the guy who snaps people in half?

    Why this will fail

    by mpjedi2

And it has absolutely _nothing_ to do with how good, or not, the film itself is. The problem is the general, non-geek, moviegoing public has left these franchises behind. Freddy and Jason are jokes to most people. JASON X, which was pretty entertaining, got groans and laughs _every time_ I saw the trailer. It obvious fans are enjoying this, but there ain't gonna be lines on opening night.

the elmstreets were always better than the FRidays

    by elmstreetkid

AND Kane Hodden is an underserving icon. he brought nothing special to the roles, and it should be noted that his films are the weakest of an already weak series. RObert ENglung is pure class, and i'm seein' this film for Freddy and the elm street mythos. Nancy Thomson rules! personally i've never understood the attraction to the Friday series. Simply not scary. Gore does not equal scares, and having jason lurch around to those AWFUL Harry Manfedini scores was just a bore.

Freddy became camp after Nightmare 3....

    by doom ii

...and Jason became a joke after Friday The 13th Part II. This movie will deliver EXACTLY what the fans expect (over-the-top fun). As far as a "horror element" goes, I expect none to be found. I also agree that Bride Of Chucky was better than it should have been. I may actually pay to see this, as a crowded theater will definately enhance the fun.

Ronny Yu kicks ass....... Bride With White Hair rules!

    by jarek

Seriously..... Ronny Yu has a lot of talent. Bride With White Hair was great. Hell, even Bride of Chucky was good in a funny sort of way. Formula 51 blew, but I'd say that has more to do with script than anything else.

these 2 film series' have such untapped potential to frighten...

    by elmstreetkid

i dunno, i still think that a BIG HULKING HUGE "KANE HODDER" OF A GUY is less frightening than a nimble, skeletal figure in the night. i mean, what was scarier, the T-Rex or the smaller, faster Raptor? easy, raptor (i hope this doesn't incite pro-TRex flaming). The best in EITHER series would be Wes Craven's New Nightmare, when Fred Krueger was treated as a nightmare figure; as Fred Krueger as opposed to "FREDDY Krueger" (there's a difference) I agree that PART VII The New Blood is the best Friday the 13th film, but the psychic chick stuff was so gimmicky. I think they should do a re-thinking of these 2 film series, a la Burton's Planet of the Apes (in concept, not exactly execution.) You know? like, not remake them, or sequalize them, but take their concepts, and utilize them to their maximum potential (hopefully without the Tarantino fueled, SCREAM-tested trend of making everything 'double-post ironic' with a 'knowing, self-referential wink'.
Look at Nightmare 4: THE DREAM MASTER, where Alice, Kruegers spiritual opposite battles Krueger in the dream world with... KUNG FU?!!? 80's had budget limitations, i know, but wouldn't it have been INCREDIBLE and true to the dream master mythos if alice and freddy had battled it out with their MINDS, a la Dark City, and turned the psychic tables on each other, alternating realities and laws of physics? that'd what 90's and 2000's technology could bring to these films. as for the friday's, they should set a new film in the 80's, before irony and cell phones took over, and do a moody horror film, thrills, kills, NO MANFREDINI score, and keep jason in the shadows... remember the cabin in the woods in THE RING remake? that look, the whole waterlogged, foggy look would make for a Killer atmosphere for a Friday film. i want to like them, but i just can't. As for Freddy VS Jason, i hope it pumps interest back into the genre, and their repsective films. Maybe i can get my own elmstreet scripts published, there's still life in these films, you just need to know where to look for it, and the right creative team to bring it out.

Because if there isn't, there's no reason for this movie or any other "slasher" movie to exist.

Robert Englund has a beer and cheats on Kane Hodder

    by elmstreetkid

am i the ONLY one who HATED the Harry Manfredini "Friday" scores? I know i'm beating this to death but COME ON!!! Besides "ch-ch-ch-ka-ka-ka" they're crap! Bernstein's Elmstreet theme is creepy, but J Peter Robinson's score for "New Nightmare" is actually listenable apart from the movie, good stuff.

p.s. that animation of Harry as Phoebe Cates in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is bringing back memories...Phoebe was the first topless woman i ever saw , with that scene, and she RUINED me for other women. Thanks Phoebe.

This film's gonna suck ass, it'll be teen friendly, have a nu metal soundtrack and be more pop than the fuckin' Backstreet Boys.

  • I felt the exact same way after seeing this movie. I thought it was far better than I would have expected (the ending being the only real letdown in the entire flick). Those fight scenes between Freddy and Jason are fucking incredible, everything a fan has wanted to see from both these characters. Good stuff.

Yeah, the "Jason X" score was bad, but the "Jason Goes To Hell"

    by elgyn6655321

At least Manfredini`s older "Friday" scores were somewhat eerie in the quieter moments. Why he chose to use a beat-up 1986 Casio keyboard for the "Jason Goes To Hell" score is beyond me. At least in "Jason X", the bad music kinda worked with the cheeky B-movie sci-fi atmosphere. But in "JGTH" there was no excuse.

    FANGS FOR THE MEMORIES

    by tomvee

Speaking of horror sequels, has anyone been following this business about two straight-to-video sequels to DRACULA 2000? Rutger Hauer is billed as one of two Draculas in both sequels (Stephen Billington of BRAVEHEART and RESIDENT EVIL is the other Dracula) but according to some IMDB reviews of the first sequel he never actually appears.

    GODZILLA MEETS MOTHRA

    by tomvee

We all agree only geek fanboys will spend money to see this in theaters. It is clearly a straight to video type film. And that's where New Line will make its money, plus overseas theatrical revenues and PPV here. JASON X was horrendously bad, with the exception of the holodeck sequence which clearly came directly from STAR TREK:NG. And Freddy ran out of steam a long time ago. Too bad they didn't do this film immediately following JASON GOES TO HELL where Freddy's hand pulls him down. Since Kane Hodder has become synonymous with the role, it's really a shame they couldn't use him in this final effort. On the other hand, all we can do is wait and see what a new, younger actor does with this role.

Ten dollars says freddy kicks the crap out of Jason ;)

    by hurleycd

Ok, Freddy is a wellspoken evil and unkillable monster. Jason is also evil and unkillable .... but, jason is a retard. If you'v seen JasonX which by the way was terrible >< Jason has a brain the size of a peanut. I think that if jason had you cornered then all you have to do is show him something shiney and he would get fixated on it. Cant wait for this movie!!!
