What does George W Bush, Osama Bin Laden and SPIDER-MAN have in Common'

Published at:  Apr 24, 2003 4:38:34 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here, and the answer to the headline above is that they are all the puppets and digital creations of Mark Sagar. Sagar can manipulate every word and expression that come out of their faces and that's just a tad bit scary. Leave it to some wondrously talented New Zealand guy to create a digital Bush and Bin Laden in his spare time to perfect the digital counterfeiting of Human Beings. Working with faces that we all unfortunately know so well is probably the best way to work out the kinks on something like this. And applying that geometrical expression work to the benefit of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN... well, that is something I fully support. Will it look better than the work Gaeta described to WIRED magazine regarding the work on MATRIX RELOADED and REVOLUTIONS? Well... we'll be the judge of that someday!

Hey Harry and Moriarty...

Looks like Spider-Man's days of being dragged by the villian with his mask ripped off aren't over, I guess Raimi can't get enough of that image from the comics. There's an interview with one of the new special effects supervisors on THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN (as Newsday.com is referring it to)...

    Running Man

    by thing-fish

Being able to create digital lifelike people reminds me a little of the Running Man (and of course other scifi stories). _______ Anyway I think talking Osamas can be funny. I'd love to see an updated version of the "Two tribes" video clip - remember, the Frankie Goes To Hollywood song? Remember the video clip, in which Reagan and Breznyev (sp?) beat each other into a bloody pulp? Fantastic! They don't make video clips like that any more ..... sigh.... '80s nostalgia.

    Doc Ock Unmasks Spidey

    by steve rogers

Maybe we'll get to see the famous scene from the early comics where Doc Ock kicks the crap out of Spidey and then unmasks him in front of JJJ, Betty Brant and a load of cops, only for no-one to believe that Parker could possibly be Spider-Man and that he was just impersonating him to try and save Betty (the first spidey love interest). Hopefully then Elizabeth banks, as Betty, will show her appreciation be getting buck naked and showing Parker how to party. Hoo-hah!

"Remember the video clip, in which Reagan and Breznyev (sp?) beat each other into a bloody pulp? Fantastic! They don't make video clips like that any more ..... sigh.... '80s nostalgia."---------------------------------------------------------Well, the reasons as to why they wouldn't make an updated "Bush vs. Osama" "Two Tribes" video-bit are twofold:--------------------------------------------------------First, in today's media climate, speaking of the President with anything but glowing praise gets the O'ReillyFoxLimbaughs to unjustly talk smack regarding what they convolute as a misuse of your right to free speech and expression (backed by Clear Channel's recent extremist actions such as banning the Dixie Chicks in many markets, as well as Tom Petty's "The Last DJ" for it's political leanings, AND paying for/sponsoring "support the war" rallies, etc.).------------------------------------Second, given that both Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein remain in the wind (SMALL cretins at LARGE, you might say!), such a video recreation would only lead to GW/Cheney/Rummy/Franks/Satan/Condi looking rather silly. At this point, please refer to reason number one.-------------------------------------------Finally as to "80's nostalgia, when the above mentioned team can make us wistful for the Reaganomically stained 80's- we with our pastel blazers, big-haired mullets, and trickle-down debts- things have taken a turn for the worse.-----------------------------------------------THANK GOD for X2:...'tis looking mighty!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------VonSpark

Of course, when talking about "nostalgia" in the context of the 80s, mentioning Reaganomics indeed makes one rethink any form of nostalia one might accidentally have professed. VonSpark hits the nail right on the head. _______ BTW, I love it when right-wing Americans encourage others to "think for themselves"! It's just SO humorous.

Yeah - so Limbaugh and O'Reilly get all uppity - big deal, please stop acting like they're some all powerful force that seeks to cloud the minds of men - they're just a couple of big mouths with similarly intolerant views. Just like a shitload of other wags - right or left. They are not representative of either the entire 'right-wing' community, nor are they particularly important. They are commentators. Please, let's have a little perspective. Like this whole SARS thing - my city has now been issued a travel advisory from the WHO - we've been blacklisted. All because of an illness that has so far affected 1 in 250,000, and killed a total of 14. You have a better chance of strangling yourself in your sleep (1 in 11,000). No one wears masks and the worst thing that's happening is that the Chinese communities businesses are being avoided - mostly by the Chinese community. The media are just trying to sell papers and nothing hits the sweet spot better than conflict, bloodshed and misery.

Peter Arnett didn't reveal troop positions, nor did he loot and steal for personal profit. He consented to an interview and honestly answered the questions posed to him. Arnett is not a government or military agent and is not beholden to the pep rally mentality that has taken hold of the Armed Forces of late. Arnett, in his interview, did not reveal any sensitive information that could in any way damage the illegal military action undertaken at that time, unlike Geraldo. If that repugnant orb atop your neck wasn't filled with putrified garbage, perhaps you might not spew such asinine, rancid bile from your mouth. What do you mean, illegal war? If someone breaks a series of agreements over a period of a dozen years, you're supposed to just sit there and take it? That's fine if you're France. You know, roll over for Germany twice, leave Vietnam. The U.S. will do your dirty work. War sucks. What sucks more is letting people deliberately break agreements with NO consequences. Look at South Africa. That is how disarmament works. Inspectors go in, look wherever the hell they want, and make sure everything is destroyed. This did NOT, by anybody's account, happen in Iraq. Inspectors went where Saddam told them to go. If you think anything could possibly be found, you are living in an opium dream. Your contention is misinformed, if informed at all.

  • If we left them alone then this whole thing will have been for nothing. The idea behind this war, or at least the way it was sold, was to lessen the number of terrorist nations that hate us. We leave Iraq alone and the Shiites will take over and make it an Islamic republic. We'll have another Taliban-Afghanistan on our hands. If we stick it out and make sure the government put in place is stable then maybe this war will have accomplished something. For now we have a sour victory, we can't find Saddam, and we can't keep order in Iraq. We may have brought the Iraqi's freedom but we also brought them anarchy.

Sadly, I think now that even if George Bush were to fall down an elevator shaft the drift toward the extreme right-wing would continue, people are scared and confused and will see the US turn into a christian fundamentalist state every bit as repressive as any muslim fundamentalist state.

    by mccormic

In the run up to this war FAIR did a study in which it watched the nightly news broudcasts of ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS, and kept track of the people they had on to talk about this war. Over the, I belive it was, 2 week period of the study, over 70% of the people interviewed on the news where former or current US military. Of the whole group no more then 17% of the people interviewed expressed any desenting view aganst the war, and mind you 80% of the world population is in oposition to the war. That's not fair, acurate, or balanced reporting. So many voices in opostion to this war, such has International law experts, humanitarian aid organizations, middle east polocy analists, and activists where completly or nearly comptely excluded from the debate. Of the whole group >1% identified themselves as an activist. I was actually only one person, a nurse with an activist nursing group who appread on only two of the network news broudcasts. But yeah, I'm sure the media is all liberal and all. Somehow.

Ahhhh, music to my eyes to read your posts. With the young Republican circle jerk dominating these talkbacks, I had given up hope of hearing logical intelligent opinions on the subject of current events. (Fett's been crying out int the wilderness, but he attracts so much bile for other reasons that his political comments are doomed to drown in any talkback) Interesting that at least two of you are from outside of the United States (as am I). There really seems to be an alarming growth in mainstream American opinion of the notion that the US government can do no wrong. America, by definition, is always always always right. Anyone who even questions its tactics (i.e.: most of the ENTIRE FUCKING WORLD!) is worthy of spite, derision, and hatred. Weedy, I share your wish that more citizens of the US would look to other media sources. Flipping between CBC Newsworld and CNN, I find it difficult to believe they've been covering the same war. Or the same world. It's a frustrating state of affairs. But Americans need to realize, when a friend thinks you're doing wrong and says so, he does NOT automatically become your enemy. He might just care about you -- and others -- and want you to rethink your actions and methods. He might know something you don't and want to point it out to you. Patriotism should not be blinding. Loving your country should not mean you accept the facts that you're fed. The people behind Bush are as far right as they come. If they were equally far to the left, they'd be dogmatic Marxists. Oh, and by the way people, look up the political definition of "liberalism." All the pro-war people seem to have no clue what it actually means. Peace everybody -- or is that still a dirty word?

But the fact that he starts wars around the world, almost toppled Nato, the UN, the European Union, strained relations with the conservatice pro-US Chirac government, all that is nothing compared to his greatest legacy: destroying 5000 years of world history. Not even the Taliban or the Mongols or the Vizigoths could do that. Rare statues, the national library, and perhaps missing pieces of the first epic Gilgamesh--all lost or looted--and the best part is that if you asked illiterate Bush about it--he would assume the statues were from a home and garden shop.

Liberal, conservative, who gives a shit, you soul-less bastards.

    by smeg for brains

Since when has all life been boiled down to "liberal vs. conservative"? Your entire lives revolve around what someone else says you should be like. You side up with one or the other, and then change yourself to fit in with what that "side" has dictated you be. Try being yourself, and thinking for yourself. Make up your own mind, for Christ's sake. There is nothing more pathetic than people arguing over whether the media is conservative, or liberal. Give it a fucking break. Quit spouting the party line and try using your brain for a change. There are much more important things going on than your piddly little piss matches. All they do is draw attention away from the actual important things going on, that people should actually be worried about.

I would also like to personally thank the French.

    by smeg for brains

To any French person reading this, thank you for being the reason America exists today (though I'm sure you are now rethinking your part in our creation, considering that we are now starting WWIII). Thank you for using your naval fleet to destroy the British reinforcements that Cornwallis was waiting for at Yorktown, thereby causing him to surrender. Thank you for sending French soldiers, who comprised 30% of the American revolutionary Army. All in all thank you for providing our forefathers with help, without which America would definitely not exist today. And remember that any American who bashes you for not buckling to our pressure, and for doing what you think is right, is just an ignorant person with no knowledge of their own history. Saddly they are the majority at this time.

    Actually FTF

    by blackbeltjones

We were attacked by Japan Dec 7, 1941. Since they were allied with Germany and Italy (hence the title Axis powers) and we declared war on the country of Japan, we also were declaring war on Germany and Italy. Mind you, we had an actual formal declaration of war from Congress to go to war. The last time that we actually declared a war the proper way according to the Constitution of the United States. Saddam Hussain is an evil man, I will not disagree. But when the emphasis of pre-emptive strike is based on subjective evidence, it is against the greater good. No WMD have been found. They may be some day, but the longer it goes without finding them, the more resentment will be brought upon our troops who will bear the brunt of retalliation. As for Liberal vs. Conservative, it is irrelevant in today's society. Clinton was a moderate. Bush, Sr was a moderate. Liberals vote for conservative causes every day as conservatives vote for liberal causes everyday (case in point, current stimulus package). Sorry for the rant. Please agree or critizise with me because that is what America is all about. "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it to the death" - Voltare. The Belt Has Spoken

And let me clarify a few points for you. First of all, there is no such thing as a left wing party in the States. The Democratic party is central at best. There is also no such thing as a left wing media in the States, for much the same reason. The closest the States gets to liberalism is on West Wing. Secondly, the war was illegal. Full stop. Under the UN Charter and international law as a whole, UN Security Council approval is needed before any military action is taken. There was no such approval. That makes the war illegal and the US in breach of international law (but there is, regretably, nothing new there). So you can argue till the cows come home about whether the news is liberal or conservative, but it makes bugger all difference to the facts.

Hmmm, moral high ground? Surely the point is not what the English did 100 years ago, but the fact that we as a species are supposed to have learnt since then. And for the record I am Irish so don't give me any crap. I am with the Voltaire quoter above - you have the right to spout shit - I mean, state your opinion., but that doesn't mean that everyone who disagrees with you is wrong or lying.

Just like a poor debater, you argue from the anecdotal rather than statistical evidence (even with the margin for error). "...give me quotes, quotes, quotes..." I'm an independant, but it's clear to me that televised news is basically left and radio is dominated by the right. No mystery there.

Buddy! let the anger go and find a new favorite word because after the second "lie" we pretty much understood on how you feel about conservatives. Jeees! lol! You're so full of hate that you can't even come to grips with your baseless rants. Just as there are Republican stereotypes you more than fit that near sided, hateful Liberal rhetoric.(this applies only to the extreme).

Who ever said the America wants to put the world under it's thumb?
    Back it up.
Where's the proof that the US is killing innocent women and children in Iraq when it's been documented by the UN that Sadamm has been doing that on his own for 30 years.
Is the proof in the 150 kids that the US and coalition forces freed from Sadamms prisons? Was the proof in those Iraqis screaming and dancing in the streets thanking the US for freedom?
Or are merely one of those college elitist whose education hasn't caught up with you ideology of the world.

Or could it just be Bush hasn't given you a reason to even doubt him other than the fact he's a republican?

    You Americans...

    by bastard bunny

God, I hate you people. You go on and on and fucking on about "freedom" and you're the most vile and repressive country in the Western world by a long chalk. You have over 2 million people (mostly ethnic minorities) in prison, you execute juveniles and mental retards, your "president" is a moronic, cowardly, drink-drive, coke-head, draft-dodging failure who "won" the election by virtue of his Daddy's money and influence and his brother disenfranchising black people in Florida, you had slavery into the 1860s and virtual slavery for another hundred years after that, you dropped atomic bombs on Japanese civilians then lecture the world on nuclear proliferation while you maintain the largest nuclear arsenal in the world and threaten to bomb North Korea if it develops its own bomb, you undermine democracy around the world if it suits your purpose to do so... let me tell you about another September 11th - the one in 1973. Not familiar with it? No, of course not, you're American after all and therefore ignorant. It was the date when the democratically elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende, was overthrown and murdered by a CIA-engineered military coup which ushered in many years of US-backed fascist rule during which thousands of political prisoners were tortured and murdered. But of course that was "America's backyard" so you can do what you like there can't you? And just the general tone of American life, your cretinous culture, your brainless right-wing flag-waving and "God bless america" shite, your disgusting burgers which taste like industrial slurry and, of course, Freedom Fries!

Fuck you and God bless Osama.

    That's your propaganda Poodle....

    by romanweb

ABC news reporting always has an angle in their views as they tend to lean left. That's no surprise. Just as easy you call propaganda from what I believe in I can turn around and say the same on ABC's reporting. IT's leftist Propaganda!SO who's right and who's wrong here. What make's your views so right and "Truthful" as opposed to my "Zombie state of mind" views?
Step back and think just how hypocritical your statements are.
Besides anyone who calls it the "Bush Regime" and use terms as "Mass Slaughter"(which is laughable, cause again it's baseless)I can't take seriously. That's all hate rhetoric thats used up and pointless to argue cause you'll never see it any other way.
Sure I may be Republican(which I'm thinking you're not)but there are those who belive because you are a conservative you automatically must be a Redneck, bible weilding, gun loving hunter who's a corporate miser racist! Sure there are those who fit the description but to generalize a party in that catagory and as bunch of war mongers is ignorant. Just as you are. See waht I did? I can do it to. See how rediculous I can be?Besides if you truly knew how the Electoral College votes in a Presidential Election you'd quit with that rediculous "Selected" not "Elected" argument. There were three recounts and they all favored Bush. The way you went about that nonsense only reinforces my notion that you're not a Republican and didn't vote for Bush.
And you have to "Honestly" ask yourself one thing,
Are those Iraqis better off without Sadamm?

Thanks Bastard Bunny. You tell it like we are.

    by smeg for brains

As an American I see nothing wrong with what Bastard Bunny said (except for the God Bless Osama part. C'mon, it's Allah bless Osama. Seriously Fuck Osama in his rich, spoiled, privileged little brat ass. He's no better than Bush). As a non- American you know everything that most Americans don't know about their own country. You are like the person who can look at a big mouth obnoxious asshole in a bar, and realize they are the asshole that you and everyone else in the bar sees, while while we are that person who goes on thinking they are cool as ice, while everyone wishes they were dead. Americans who are afraid to see their country as anything but perfect are UNPATRIOTIC COWARDS. People who are willing to stand up and say that what we are doing is wrong are the ones who actually care about our country and it's future. Me I gave up the day that we let that fucker steal the election. The way I see it is that we no longer live in a free democracy, and are all going down the drain, and eventually our new evil empire building ways will come back and bite us in the ass. All you so called patriotic flag wavers are doing is helping speed up the process, so that I have to see the end of our short lived little nation, rather than my kids or grandchildren.

  • lol! That about sums up your ignorant rhetoric. And buddy I do mean ignorant!!! I give you questions that you won't bring yourself to answer because it challenges your beliefs and thinking process. Which is obviously 2 dimensional. I"m going to challenge some more of you what you use for a brain with some questions Like:
If you're so pissed off we went into Iraq without the okay of the UN, were you this angry when CLinton totally bipassed the UN,in 98 when we went in to Kosovo and Haiti? Was it bloody murder and mass slaughter when CLinton echoed what President Bush has been saying for six months about getting rid of Sadamm then shot some missles into Iraq in that same year?NOw come on be consistent. Or how about resolution 1441(which was unanimously signed by the UN) states that Sadaam must comply and adheir to it's policy, without material breach, or face dire consequences. Iraq breached it 12 times in the span of 4 months! Why was the UN sooooo determined not to follow throught with their own resolution?? Maybe for the same reasons the didn't follow through with other resolutions against Sadaam for 12 years.
If you had half a brain to think with you'd realize the UN is worthless and made up of Communist and Socialist dictators who do nothing more but fleece America of it's money for world causes and keep themsleves rich and powerful by pocketing it. Open you feeble eyes pin head! I guess you'd rather be spoonfed emotion rather than logic.
I guess when Collin Powell presented a taped phone conversation between Sadams guards to the UN flat out saying they evacuated materials from the inspectors that was all made up huh? But like I said you'd rather dismiss it and feed off emotional idiocy to suit your view. Sorry to tell you but it's you who's braindwashed and nothings more funnier or sad than an idiot who rants and raves the way you do with nothing to back it up. You merely demonize Bush because you hate him. I'll ask you again you peevish, little bohemian, are Iraqis better off without Sadaam being in power?? You know that guy who gased 300,000 kurds, tortures women and children, hated the US.....
But then again why bother. To you the world will always be a dismal place and as long as theres something to complain about you'll go on complaining. Hey at least I'm a hell of alot happier than you loser!!!!!

    Followup to FTF

    by blackbeltjones

FTF, I would agree that the Germans would of be much happier if Japan had not attacked us. We as a country would of been just has happy to ignore Hitler and just funnel weapons to Britan. However, Japan was in an alliance with Germany and Italy (just as bad as the French when it comes to jumping sides in a war). And an attack from Japan was an attack from all according to that alliance. I can just imagine the look on Hitler's face when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Probably smug due to the fact that they pulled it off, but horrified that the Americans were going to jump into the war. As for Iraq, we claimed the basis for conflict (not war, due to no Congressional declaration) was Weapons of Mass Destruction and Regime change. WMD have not been found, as of yet (have to stress that because they could still be found) and we as a country have always been shakey at Regime change (see Saudi Arabia, Most South American nations, Panama, Nicaragua among others). I will say this in closing: If President Bush wants to win the 2004 elections, it will hinge on finding WMD and a successful regime change.

    by mccormic

This is not exactly an example of media bias, although the US media's lack of coverage on this story should be telling. What this is, is a very important story that everyone in this contry should be made aware of. So your people, in this country, so read it.

    From www.thismodernworld.com

"Remember all the shouting about humane treatment of prisoners, particularly concerning public humiliation?

This isn't getting a lot of play here in the U.S., but U.S. soldiers reportedly stripped four Iraqi men naked, burned their clothes, and paraded them through a Baghdad park."

    http://www.dagbladet.no/nyheter/2003/04/25/367175.html

"My Norwegian is generally pretty skrekkelig, but Amnesty International is pretty good with foreign languages, and they say a US officer referred to the practice of stripping suspects, scribbing 'Ali Baba -- thief' on their chests in Arabic, and then marching them around with their testikkelen out like a bunch of nakenmodellen as 'an effective method' that 'will be used again.'"
