With all due respect to Larchmont NY's fav resident, Ang Lee, something doesn't seem quite right with this. It's seems a little too low key; like they were talking about Bruce Banner losing his job over his temper, not trashing San Fransico because he lost it. I've read that Ang Lee wants this to be a metaphor for a dysfunctional family, but this seems a little too quiet for the Hulk.

Some of the scenes on the trailer, the Hulk actually looked good. I'll put my faith into Gale Anne Hurd who doesn't get much attention outside of Hollywood circles. by chillzatl

It looks bad. It's such a shame too. Because the production and tone of the film seems so serious and very well acted. But then it cuts to these scenes of the hulk and it looks like a video game. It makes it hard to fall into the film and believe it.

I'll be in line on opening night to see it. But I have little hope that it's going to NOT look so plasticy and fake on the big screen.

Is this ILM work? They are slipping, bad. THey need a software re-write or something. WETA is miles ahead of them in terms of realistic lighting, movement and skin work.

Don't criticize people who don't like the FX. I think they look like shiat; just because the character is based in fantasy doesn't mean it shouldn't look like a real creature in a live-action film. I'm still going to have to see this film for two reasons: (1) Ang Lee, (2) James Schamus. This movie won't even come close to touching "X2" or the "Matrix" sequels, but I'm sure it'll be on par with "American Wedding."

I so want to like this movie

    by sci_fi_wasabe

but I'm having a hard time with the CG hulk. I'm trying not to notice it and see the trailer as a whole entity, not a Roger Rabbit merging. It's like the Mole in Austin Powers...I'm trying not to notice it, but it's just jumping right out at me. The Gollum character in Two Towers was amazing, however at no time did I ever forget the character was animated. The harry potter elf was just as good, and again, animated. Chunks of Spiderman sucked, but some of it was great (the razor bat/burning building sequence works for me). For some reason, the CG hulk draws me out of the moment in the trailer (maybe because I'm looking for it and things that can't exist in reality draw more scrutiny). Some of it looks pretty good, some looks pretty bad (giant Scorpion-Rock bad). Maybe it'll look great on the big screen, or maybe I won't notice it due to (hopefully) great story. They'll get my money regardless. It's funny though, growing up I never had that much of a problem with the clay stop motion Harryhausen type stuff (even though it's not as "polished" as the cgi stuff).

    by gypsytrobot

or is a god, is he still alive? His creations had character and soul, not to mention actual 3 dimensions. I can't walk by a metal statue without thinking of the metal giant from Jason and the Argonauts - my ears strain to hear the sound of moving metal. Remember the ankle plug! Peace out.

    by lelon

    yes, yes it does.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Overall, yes, I'm impressed. That doesn't mean I don't have a few minor gripes. Hulk's face does look a little doughy, yes, but you people have absolutely NO idea what you're asking to make the detail sharper. Sure the eyes don't look 100% real, but guess what, the eyes are the hardest thing to make real unless you pull a WETA and use a real actor for reference. Those don't bother me so much sicne I KNOW what we're asking of the artists. Personally, my biggest CGI gripe as an artist is what still looks like a very lazy and extremely cartoony texture job. Where are all the dark veins pressed to the surface? The fine lines and wrinkles? Moles and freckles? Scratches? Body hair? Maybe I'll catch the detail on the big screen. Oh, but the animation... it's beautiful. Not sure how much is mo-cap, but I'm loving his movement. Would have liked to see more rippling/sliding movement in those muscles, but hey, that's just me. But as far as storytelling goes, I'm liking the direction this is taking. The beginning of that trailer is brilliant, with some very excellent writing (about the incredibly vivid dream). So I like the story. And the Hulk is a serious force to be reckoned with from the looks of this. So I'm impressed, and a little bit excited. In short, the trailer did what it needed to do. I'm going to see Hulk this summer.

    MIXED FEELINGS

    by rogueelement

I think Ang Lee will craft a real and compelling story around this comic book character that will make up for its other defiencies. By "other deficiencies" I mean the CGI. People who say it's great are like parents of an ugly child who cannot see the truth for what it is. I mean, come on! The Hulk looked like a 2 year old throwing a temper tantrum when he splashed in the water. The movement is unrealistic, his size is bizarre and his facial expressions are limited. But enough about Mr. Bana. I'll see it - but I'm definitely not wet.

I dunno, I'm not feeling it...

    by castor777

I'm glad everyone else seems head over heals with anticipation for Hulk, but I'm questioning if I'll even bother seeing it. For starters, I didn't read the comic book and am not too familiar with the Hulk much at all (ok well I did go on the Hulk ride at Universal Studios: Islands of Adventure). Secondly, yes the CGI is indeed pretty impressive so I won't bother pretending it's not. The only problem that anyone can say involving the CGI is from the source material. Folks, this is a fucking green monster - cut the shit with saying it doesn't look realistic. How else would you make this thing look so realistic when, again, IT'S FUCKIN GREEN! But good CGI or not good CGI - the problem I have with it is that this movie looks so damn cheesy. The setup in the trailer had me going but once when I see the dude spin a tank and toss it way up into the air I just can't suspend my disbelief enough. For fans of the comicbook that may be pretty cool to them but I have no attachment to that kinda stuff. I hope for all of you excited for seeing this that it lives up to your expectations but I'll pass (yes, even after all the glowing reviews that Harry posts on this site - I already fell for that with Daredevil and there ain't no fuckin way I'll make the same mistake again).

    by acappellaman

How in the world can anybody possibly be so damn critical of the CGI in this trailer??? I have not seen better humanoid CGI modeling and animation (the combination of both is the kicker) in any movie. Ever. Gollum does not compare to this. Not even close. Anybody bitching about the quality is just doing it to get a rise out of the normal folk in here. I bet you all steal suckers from children when you lollygag onto the streets too. Sick bastards. The Hulk is going to rock. I have complete confidence in this movie now. And Jennifer Connelly is NOT bony. She's looking pretty damn fine to me.

Ben Affleck sucked. The script sucked. That movie was piss poor and it sucks because that's my favorite Comic character but This Hulk movie will be good.Ang Lee can play ball and Eric Bana is a legitimate movie star of the future not some overhyped celebrity,J-lo's bootie tapping, mediocre acting insipid pretty boy like Ben Affleck! It's funny how there are barely any negative remarks concerning the film's prospects on this talkback. Shades of Ang Lee in the trailer alone; it actually seemed kind of unsettling. I have no doubt in my mind that this movie is going to be a classic. And even if the CGI doesn't blend seamlessly, it's an incredible achievement.

    by st.buggering

It's a good thing you all didn't grow up in the era of stop-motion. We learned to appreciate a good film without bitching about every effect that didn't look completely real. It's called suspension of disbelief. Did the AT-AT's look completely real? Did Yoda? Thank god you people weren't around in 1980. All I can say is, if you watched that trailer and are still whining, you are no fan of this character, and no Hulk movie was ever going to reach you; you decided to hate it a long time ago.

Comic book movie or not, the Hulk does look extremely cartoonish. And I know that CG can be done better than that. I beleived gollumn's presence far more that I do the hulk's. That's not to say tha the movie will be bad, in fact i'm sure it will be quite good. It's just that when the movie is purportedly trying to emphasize the human emotional side of the story, obstacles to beleivability are more important because we need to empathize with the characters more. I think it's funny that in the initial stages of development of lord of the rings, george Lucas moked Weta, saying that they wouldn't be able to do it. Sorry George Weta owns ILM.

    by mr. smegma

I had serious doubts about this project -- but unless this trailer is one of the greatest fraud and con jobs in history -- they've just been totally erased. The CGI is a big part of that (more on that in a sec) but the pacing, focus, and intensity of the film seems to be spot on.
Jennifer Connelly looks like she is ready to fight the world and die to save her man, and if that isn't sexy as fuck, you pud whackers are hopeless. Bana just oozes deep and troubled, the script will still have to give us understandable motivations along the way, but if it does, watch out. Nolte looks like he'll function perfectly as the crazy old wizard who lurks at the heart of every great fantasy in many guises -- mad scientist being the '50s-60s golden age ver. Here's hoping Lee's fresh eye pulls all these part together. Now, the CGI. The scene with Hulk shaking water off himself is a big fuck you to all the doubters, like me. These guys know they nailed it and are showing off. I watched it 3 or 4 times and it gave me chill each time. It fucking WAS the Hulk.

    The Hulk Trailer...

    by the night raven

...was everthing I had hoped for. The script is, reportedley, excellent and in the hands of Ang Lee, we could be in for something really special. Something with depth and wit. something that transcends the source material.

To date the best 'Superhero' adaptation remains Richard Donner's 'Superman'and the best 'Superhero' film is 'Unbreakable'. The Hulk has the potential to become both.

My first few looks at the Hulk in screen shots and early previews left me thinking that I must be 'Up in the valley of the...' well, you know. Anyway, in the context of this trailer I think I get the tone Lee is trying to set. Yes, it is based on a comic book. Instead of going for the 'hyper-real take me seriously approach' this movie is set in it's own make-believe world. The green guy looked pretty cool moving around through it. CTHD is ridiculous unless you give yourself over to the world it's set in. Lee must be trying to do the same thing here. My optimism is seeping back in!

I guess most of my reservations still stem from the lackluster days of Marvel movies which reeked. Sure, the X-Men was good and Spider-Man too,and what they've done with Blade is pretty cool, but you keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Daredevil was a bit of a misstep in my opinion, and so the fears come crawling back. I still remember Roger Corman's F.F.; eeeeeeeeee...

But I finally enjoyed one of the trailers. This one, to be precise. So with the caution of someone who's been hurt by an insensitive Hollywood before I put the Hulk on my to-watch list with other films this year.

    rule 1: torture the heroine

    by hud

since i've seen two trailers and three still photographs, I feel perfectly competent to judge this movie. But here's my thing: why has Ang Lee encouraged Jennifer Connelly to play her character as a Bronte heroine, all faint with lovesickness? I suppose he's pitched all the nonaction scenes in the same tone of barely speakable regrets and pang-of-love-in-torment, but movies like that make me wish for stronger personalities to offset all that emotional delicacy. I guess Sam Elliott will be an adequately butch substitute for someone with some moxie, but boy, do I miss the Howard Hawks heroines; they were nobody's wet-eyed nursemaids.

let me tell you something, Gollum didn't look any more "real" than Yoda or Watto or the Hulk. It was the performance that Andy S gave that made the character so great. And the jury's still out on how good the Hulk's "acting" is. So quit your bitching and enjoy the movie.

I think its sad how people can talk crap about a film and they have only seen 2 minutes of a film, but there are some movies that you only need 2 minutes to see its a big steaming pile of horse dung.

People who are dissing the CGI cause its not up to their standards... id like to see them make something better, but this is the first human like character that has been made like this. Spiderman doesnt count, cause he was covered in a costume, didnt have skin or hair or muscles.

I think we all need to see this film in its full glory before we make any harsh judgements. As far as what someone said about making $190 million, its hard to say what it will do this summer, cause there is alot of competition out there in the July time slot. I have a feeling it will barely make over $100 million. T3 will bomb also.

    Give me a break!

    by jokrsmile

I have been reading feedback not only from this site, but from others as well since this trailer hit. Approximately 80% of it has been positive. Now I for one love the entire look of the HULK and the new trailer. I also respect anyones opinion that differs with mine, as long as it is intelligent and has merit. Most of the ney-sayers however, couldn't come up with an intelligent argument if came up and bit them in the ass!!! Most of the people here obviously haven't picked up a HULK comic in some time. If they had they would know the HULK is drawn as a Goliath amoung men. He's suppose to be huge!! He's written as possibly the strongest human to ever walk the planet. Ang Lee has nailed the look and feel of the comic from what I've seen so far. The scene where the HULK has escaped from the capsule and is in a rage is one of the best CG scenes I've ever witnessed. To date Golum is the best CG character I've seen on the big screen, and I honestly think the HULK will be just as good or better. As for the morons who keep posting shit like "he looks like Shrek", "he's too big", or one of my favorites "CG Yoda is the best", please get an eye exam, and think before you speak. The HULK is going to be an awesome flick all around. My prediction is that it will come in 3rd or 4th in the summer movie race. Behind Return of the King, the Matrix flixs and/or X2. The Hulk will fit nicely in there somewhere.

Terrible dialogue and even worse acting

    by ivan_mtl

Wow. I think I've seen coffee tables deliver lines with more emotion than Eric Bana. Maybe it's the dialogue, but those lines and their delivery were hard to listen to - and that's including the rest of the cast. And to think I was worried about the special effects work on the Hulk. Hopefully this film will have enough action sequences to compensate for the awkward moments of "acting".

    Reply to Talkback

  • ...than the accumulation of experience and the exponential increase in computing power. Yes, people demand better effects, but that does nothing until the initiative comes from the filmmakers. I guess I would say that you have certain people who want better out of the effects, and they drive the engines of ingenuity (to shamelessly steal from the title of a local NPR show) from which comes realistic CGI like Hulk, Gollum, and the Characters of the recent Star Wars movies. Of course, if your filmmaker doesn't care, and just wants his effects on time...

    thank you AngoraSweater

    by jokrsmile

You made my point in many ways, and I thank you. First off let me say that I've read a coulple of your posts, and I disagree with everything you've said. But you've backed up your points with well thought out dialog. Thank you for that. I always enjoy a good debate on subjects that are of interest to me. That being said, here another point you may have made for me. The HULK looks great, and having him look like he does in the comics is awesome. Every "normal" person drawn in HULK comics are dwarfed by the HULK. The HULK can wrap his hand around a persons' waist for example which shows just how huge he is. To pull this off in the movie is vital, and I believe Ang Lee has done a great job of showing the HULK this way. I don't believe that the tricks used in LOTR would work for this movie. The HULK needs to be out of proportion, he needs to have the extra mass that only CG can pull off. An actor in make-up using forced perspective shots would do an injustice to the character. I don't know if posters such as yourself have picked up a comic lately, but I highly recommed you do. This is not the HULK from the TV series, thank god!! I firmly believe one reason for some peoples problems with the HULK is that nothing like the HULK has been seen on film. Sure some will say "what about Golum or the Dinosaurs from JP?" My answer is that those CG character have very little or no frame of reference for comparison. I for one had to see The Two Towers Twice for the Golum effects to sink in. And I have never seen a Dinosaur, so I had no expectations on how they should look or move. The HULK however is a human taken to the extreme and I think that's where people are having trouble. The CG looks great to me. The HULK rivals Golum in every way. This movie is going to kick ass.

S1m0ne cannot be called "the best CGI character to date" because she potrayed by an actual actress named Rachel Roberts. Sure she may have been embellished by CGI effects but she does not in any way qualify as a CGI character.
As for all the Daredevil bashing, while it may not have been the best comic adaptation, it was by far, not the worst. Had the bar not been set so high by films like X-Men and Spider-Man, and was actually released before these films, I believe that Daredevil would have been seen in another light.

One more thing, c'mon guys, give up on the "sexiest tomboy beanpole", "electric boogaloos",
"Bruce Cambell for everything", "Hulk Hogan as..", and my least favorite, "I'm first". You guys wore those half jokes down to nothing. Come up with something new, I challenge you!

    CGI Detail

    by fezmariewhatley

I think that, for the people who are concerned about the Hulk looking too cartoonish, you have to take into account the fact that you're seeing it on a video monitor. You lose a ton of detail and even a little detail can make or break the believability of the image. I'm waiting to see it in the theater before I make up my mind as to how good the CGI is. Then again, I'm just a simple girl from the Bronx, so I may not know what I'm talking about.

I am so looking forward to this movie. The CGI looks amazing, and anybody who disagrees knows nothing about visual effects. Forget Gollum and all the rest - Hulk Smash!

Leave it to Ang Lee and James Schamus...

to put NO MAKEUP on Jennifer Connelly. And to tell her to lose 25 pounds so she's a beanpole (no, not that beanpole) and her boobs are smaller than any heterosexual movie fan would want them to be. I mean, of course she still looks gorgeous with no makeup and a jean jacket on, but wouldn't you prefer her in a wet top and thong, about 20 pounds heavier with most of it landing in her boobage? Yeah, so would I. But then that oscar she won pretty much ensures she'll never do another gratuitous nudity or even remotely sexual role. Cripes. Oh, and did the Hulk have a father in the original comic? And a weird, hippie one at that? Don't remember that.

Hulk qualifies as a major discovery!!!!

  • I mean c'mon people. get your heads out of the sand. No CGI ever looks 100% real. But looking 100% real and looking real enough that you can comfortably fall into a supposedly serious movie are two different things.

The hulk stands out like a turd in a punch-bowl. He looks like a lime green inflatable doll. The shots of him breaking out of that lab/tank thing, the entire shot looks like a video game. Then they cut to the other scenes in that room with only real people and the room DOES NOT look fake.

They could have made him look "more realistic". Sure he's a comic book monster. But they could have given him the rawness and edge to be a bit scary and intimidating. It's like they are expecting his size alone to be intimidating to moviegoers. Sure he's big, but he looks like a toy.

There has to be some consistancy in it and here, there is not. All the scenes of him jumping around and interacting with poeple, he looks soooo damn fake. To ILM's credit, the scenes of him at night look very good. Much better than the daytime scenes. But it's going to be hard to stop seeing this horribly plasticy, CGI Hulk long enough to enjoy what looks to be a very well written, well played movie.

OK that trailer kix some serious ass. To all those that think the HULK looks to CGI, all I have to say is this. If you were just walkin down the street and saw this 15foot green monster trashing everything in its sight I really don't think many of you would think it was real. It would be too surreal. The only way we could explain this to ourselves would be to say that it's not real.
And remember it's a frickin comic book movie.

Look, I'm a day-to-day Ain't It Cooler and I hop over to the chat from time to time (You might know me as Drexl) but I don't write for these talkbacks very often. For one, I think they're overpopulated by stupid morons with too much spare time on their hands. "Boohoo, Harry's a sell-out", "Plant!", "Hulk Hogan", "Yoda vs. Gollum". Fuck you all!! That said, I'm gonna give this Hulk thing the benefit of the doubt. It's definitely not the most anticipated movie of the summer in my book (Hell, X2 even beats both Matrix flicks) but I hope Ang Lee and James Schamus pull this off. These guys know how to make movies so I have hope. And about that CGI... well, it's CGI... I started looking forward to Hulk the moment I saw him shaking that water. Pretty impressive stuff. Mind you, I know shit 'bout the Hulk.. It's just a guy getting green 'n mean ain't it?! Worst-case scenario: we get a campy Mummy effectstravaganza (doubt it though) but we might see a spectacular action - character driven comic book based picture about what drives a man to rage. So shut the fuck up and stop bashing movies before you've seen them. Jerk offs! Now, I gotta go fetch me some ho's!

While I agree that the Hulk CGI could look a little more polished, I though the trailer was great. We really do have to amend what we expect out of CGI effects in the following sense. No level of CGI can ever make something that is fundamentally unreal look believable. The human mind is hardwired with the mathemetics of real-world physics even when we are unaware of it. The dinos in Jurassic Park look great precisely because they have the correct biological underpinnings to be that size: massive torsos, legs and feet, and (proportionally) tiny chests, shoulders and heads. A human the size and weight of the Hulk would not even be able to stand, let alone walk and run. Therefore the CGI of such a thing, no matter how photorealistic, is going to "look" phony to a large degree. Andre the giant was probably the largest humans of all time when one is speaking of height and weight and just consider how freakish he looked. Just some thoughts.
