RED DWARF Movie Update!!

Published at:  Apr 21, 2003 7:39:45 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

A lot of people were convinced that the promotional flyer that we ran a few months ago was fake, and they pointed out all sorts of “mistakes” in the text of the thing.

Well, guess what? It ain’t fake. And here’s the proof:

Hey Harry,

In case this hasn't been pointed out to you guys yet, maybe it's news - Red Dwarf the Movie pre-production news tidbit.

CLICK RIGHT HERE TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE NEWS!!

Hope you had a great Easter Holiday!

thethedew

I just recently got both the first and second series of RED DWARF on DVD, and it’s been a delightful re-introduction to not only the show, but the people behind it. I’m certainly curious to see how this film finally comes together, and I hope it is a genuine delight for DWARF fans worldwide. The wait’s certainly been long enough.

"Moriarty" out.

    Budget

    by jon e cin

Will the movie have a bigger budget than the $100.00 per show it seemed to have?

Ridley Scott needs to direct a Doctor who movie and Robert Hewit

    by declan_swartz

Scott was almost the production designer on the pilot episode of Doctor Who. Robert Hewitt Wolfe could easily write an trilogy of movies, or help to craft a new series. If they bring back the Doctor then he should have the limitations of the third doctor and be trapped in Earth's timeline. I met a super-fan once who had worked out how to make Daleks scary for a modern audience, and it involved their gooey center.

How did they get in prison??

    by blok narpin

My local PBS rarely shows Red Dwarf, and when they do it's in no particular order. About 2 years ago they had a mini marathon where they showed a bunch of episodes about the Red Dwarf crew being in prison. It was hilarious, and was cracking me up continuously, but I kept wondering how they got there. Does anyone know what season this was?? I hope the prison season makes it to DVD soon. I want to see hopw they got there. It's a great show!

    How they got into prison.

    by shagrat999

I believe they get into prison because: 1) Lister contracts some weird virus that will eventually kill him, but it is restricted to his arm. 2) After trying a few things, they eventually cut his arm off. 3) Lister is depressed because he can't play guitar anymore. 4) Kryton comes up with a plan to use nanobots to rebuild Lister's arm. 5) The nanobots not only rebuild his arm, they go on to completely rebuild Red Dwarf, with all the original crew, including Rimmer. 6) Within 2 episodes, mostly having to do with sexual virtility viruses and sleeping with the captain's wife, they are charged with "Crimes against Space Corps" and spend the rest of Season 8 in jail. The full episode guide can be found at http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/ under Black Box.

drunkbydawn, why I brought up Ridley Scott...

    by declan_swartz

was to ge the interest of Hollywood. His almost relationship with the show might make some backers interested in the property. Like I mentioned, I am in favor of a no thrills version like the Third Doctor's reign of being stuck within the timeline of Earth. I was jsut trying to through out some ideas of what might work with a new movie or series. The gooey center was more a less a joke, because the guy I met wanted to turn them into tranforming, flying machines that would unite in giant hive/sphere craft for a shared consciousness much like those popular Borg from Star Trek: TNG.

The reason they never made a Doctor Who movie is because the BBC

    by smeg for brains

The BBC can't afford the fund a huge Doctor Who movie on their own, and any time that they have tried to work with the people who have the money (i.e. Hollywood) it falls apart. That is because all Hollywood cares about is making idiotic brainless "hit" films, and the BBC wants to protect it's prized possession, and not ruin it by putting out a big stupid action movie with the name Doctor Who slapped on it. The Doctor Who fans would hate it, and it would ruin the franchise, and the other non fans wouldn't care, because Doctor Who is seen (at least in America, where the Hollywood money comes from, and is concerned about) as a nerdy PBS geek show, if it the morons even know what it is in the first place. I would say that no Doctor Who film is better than a huge budgetted, series ending flop, crappy action Doctor Who film with an American Doctor, and a Tardis with laser guns. Of course this doesn't explain why the BBC doesn't make a new DW tv series, but in this case higher budget DW movie means lower quality DW story, and since the stories have always been the only good thing about Doctor Who (along with some of the acting) then why would any Doctor Who fan want the BBC to ruin it with a big budget hollywood film?

oh, and NO THEY ARE NOT RECASTING THE ROLES.

    by smeg for brains

All of the actors are signed for the movie, and they have been doing group readings of the script already. The money is all they have been having problems with. This movie will most certainly be good. For one thing it doesn't take place in the timeline of the series (meaning it doesn't pick up after the eight series cliff hanger) so it will be back to the good old idea of them being lost out in space. Sure the eighth series didn't live up to the quality of the other series, but it was still damn good. Just ike the Simpsons arent as good as they once were, but they are still damn funny. I'll take one Simpsons season fourteen episode, or one Red Dwarf series eight episode over the entire run of Friends (the most over rated show), Will and Grace (the second most over rated) or new crap like Oliver Beene. Also the story they give on the flyer is not anything that wasn't already dealt with in the show. Sure we never new that the Simulants hunted the humans to extinction, but we knew they were around, and that Humans were extinct (except Lister, and now Kochanski, and I guess now Rimmer, and the entire crew of the Red Dwarf). So why is it so hard to believe that they could be working an explaination into the movie?

Would love to see Red Dwarf again, But about Dr. Who...

    by harmoniumsaver

Was there NOT a Dr. Who movie made for FOX that took place in San Francisco (and looked like it was probably directed by the same people who did 'SLIDERS')?? I remember falling asleep watching it, but that it was cool in parts and made me wonder what the original was like. The inside of the phone booth looked pretty damn cool. Anyhow, am I guessing this movie is not official as it was trying to ressurrect the Doc and failed??

I would like to apologize to Randy Giles for ruining the English

    by declan_swartz

It really is funny that I used to be the kind of guy that would correct others for improper sentence structure and mispronunciation. Then I had an epiphany about those, like myself, who read and comment on this site from work. Maybe they only have a few minutes in a day to read something interesting aside from their workload. I will be the first to admit that I speed read most of what is on the site and speed type if I have something that might relate to an article. Mistakes will occur, and I praise those English-as-a-second-language readers and commentators who try their best to join in on all of this geeky fun.

The Simpsons hasn't been watchable since about '97

    by beamish13

The only Red Dwarf episodes I've seen are those from the first 4 series, and they were all hysterical. I hope to find some RD paperbacks and I'll definitely be seeing the movie.

    Okay......

    by sithlordexar888

Red Dwarf was one of the better comedies of the late 80s/90s. While the last few series seemed more concerned with being visually better rather than comically, they where still superb. I'm glad that the movie is being made, and is returning to the shows roots. Rimmer is a hologram, the ship is empty, and they can do whatever they want.

oh, and there are many many Dr. Who films, what the hell are you talking about. Theres at least 5. Day of the Daleks being one of the best. And the worst is the horribly Americanised 1995 film which features a young Who, and no decent enemies, only confused 20th century doctors (at Dr.Who's 2 hearts) and some weird guy. Dr.Who was quite good sometimes, but the films are better than the series

Why are they making this into a movie?

    by breck

I suppose the series was a little humorous in a cheesy, low-budget kinda way but damn it's not worth making into a feature. I suppose they'll be making an "All Creatures Great and Small" adaptation next. If you want to dig through the garbage heap of the BBC for movie material at least pick the one show(book) that actually could make a decent adaptation, that of course being "Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy."

    by buckna

The first 6 seasons were hysterical, never got to see the last two but heard they were crap. Isn't Lister hosting Robot Wars or something like that now? And I thought the actor who played Cat got thrown in prison for exposing himself or something? What do you say to that Mr. Flibble?!?!?

    no

    by sithlordexar888

Craig Charles is presenting Robot Wars, the guy who played Rimmer ( can't think of his name), is the butler in Tomb Raider 1 and 2, and the guy who played Cat (can't remember his name either) was in the horrible Blade 2.

The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is absoleute crap, nothing compared to Red Dwarf, but that is also being made into a movie.

The actual reason the Red Dwarf crew are in prison

    by curtisthreadgold

Someone asked why the Red Dwarf crew were in prison. This was series 8. The crew were charged with the stealing and crashing of starbug but were found innocent of these charges due to the bizzare nature of events. In particular the death of the entire crew and their ressurection by the nanobots however to prove this they got access to confidential files and were all given a sentence of two years in the Tank on floor 13. Simple as that

What the hell are you talking about

    by curtisthreadgold

Breck you obviously have no idea what your talking about. Red Dwarf was not some quaint little comedy it was (and still is) an excellent show. Its not just a funny sci-fi the series also features some excellent social comments buried within its fantastic script. Its not about a couple of slobs in space, in fact the space thing is just a back drop, its about how these characters deal with eachother is their microcosm of society. Much better than most stuff on TV and the film could be much better than the majority of the crap that Hollywood churns out.
