Sony's International Trailer of T3 Puts Warner Bros' Campaign In The Dirt!

Published at:  Apr 16, 2003 2:44:28 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... You may have noticed an absence of TERMINATOR 3 coverage on the site... Basically that's because in tandem with the terrible script they had, and the word from inside Warner Brothers about TERMINATOR 3... I have a hard time looking forward to this movie at any possible level. I also find it ironic as hell that WARNER BROTHERS has just been schooled on how to cut a trailer for their big Summer Film. This trailer almost makes me enthusiastic about the film. Almost. I want to see a good TERMINATOR movie, so if I go and see this and it sucks... I still got the two at home! Here ya go...

The marketing people responsible for Spider-Man's success can put together a good trailer and the people responsible for feardot.com can't? Who would of believed it! T3 is still going to suck. Bring on X2, Matrix Reloaded and POTC. The ONLY three movies worth the inflated ticket price this summer.

Hmm, Harry, I seem to remember this site giving the review of the awful previous draft by Tedi Sarafian such a 'glowing' review. Taling out yer ass again.

Woh, hang on, this film might be good afterall! The same thing all negative wankers say who bash T3 constantly. Just proves how much you dicks actually know about the movie. I know it will be good from detailed files, something none of you have.

Matrix will fall, and T3 will rise. Face it bitches, you're gonna be eating your fucking words come July 2nd.

    Somethings Should Not Come Back

    by darryl revok

I remember reading STARLOG in August of 1984 and seeing this cool looking film with CONAN in it. I was about to start 5th grade and it seemed like a nifty thing. My mother would not take me to see an R rated film so I bought the novelization and read it until it fell apart. I became obsessed with the idea of John Connor trying to save his mother and ,in effect, saving the rebellion. I finally saw the film on video in 1986, and it was a letdown from the one I created in my head. That said it was also a fine little rusty can edged piece of Sci-Action. Flash forward to my high school days and the release of T2. It was nothing like I thoght it would be. IN a word it was unoriginal. It was a chase film when as a 5th grader I imagined it as a harsh epic story of rebellion. I remeber imagining the action in destroyed landscapes . James Cameron is not a great or highly imagonative writer. He is a gifted technician. I guess I should have known that, but the promise that I saw in the first one was not to be.
T3 looks like a T2 redux. "See, onea th' Terminators is gunna be WO-MAN! Isn't that clever?"

No, I'm sorry it isn't. I'm not buying either. I suggest no one else does until concepts with promise are offered once again.

    Reply to Talkback

  • That trailer was good, albeit a bit cheesy, and I may have movies to see much higher on my list, but judging from the absurdly high and just plain ludicrous budget on this movie, the cheesy script and acting, the fact that very few people from the first Terminator movies will be a part of this, and above all, the total lack of interest, again, this could be the biggest disaster in Hollywood history. This will the rise of the machines...and the fall of Warner Bros.

One again, T3 is gonna be a great action BLOCKBUSTER

    by abking

Even if T3 was half as good as T1 and T2, it would still be a BLOCKBUSTER at the box-office. People are going to want to escape the reality of the world this summer and sci-fi and comedies are the answer. T3 fever will be at a high after the trailer goes out with THE MATRIX RELOADED. T3 looks to have some out-of-this-world action scenes and special effects for hard action junkies to flock to the movie theaters. Opening weekend should be HUGE! Lets just hope the WB has enough brains to give T3 a HARD R rating like CAMERON would have done!!! That trailer and the score gets the blood pumping for more!!!

The saddest thing about T3's probable failure is...

    by roobyroo

...that it will cast doubt on a possible King Conan movie. It will likely be seen that Arnold can't succeed, even when he revisits past successes, so why bother backing a new Conan movie? At the very least it would probably negatively impact the movie's budget. Shit. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am, because a full-on, big-budget King Conan needs to happen. If the Waischowski's (sp?) are on board, though, maybe they can make it happen regardless.

T3 Trailer - surprisingly good, but...

    by ivan_mtl

Despite the fact that the storyline for the film is highly derivative of the second movie and offers absolutely nothing new to the Terminator mythos, I must admit that the trailer is well put together. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than a mindless popcorn flick - where action is substituted for story. I do think that this movie will be a finacial failure, if only because of its high production cost and the fact that Arnold's star has long ago faded. Where once I looked forward to any new 'Arnie' pic, now I just wish he would retire. He has become a caricature of himself, much like the character in the cartoon series, The Simpsons. It's embarrassing to behold.

I also remember harry writing a retort to Moriarty's slating of the T3 trailer, now he is saying he thought it might be shit? But now he might be a little interested in it. Jeez Harry make your mind up, fact is AICN knows less than most of us who have been following T3's production. Cater to your audience, which does not consist only of the small percentage who use talkback. A lot of people are interested in T3. Just because you cant make your mind up if its gonna be good or a disaster is no reason not to cover the movie.

    by sci_fi_wasabe

But that trailer looked friggin great. It looks like exactly the time of Terminator movie I wanna see. Only exception was Arnie's line at the end. That delivery was so wooden it makes William Shatner look like Owen Wilson. "It.......is.....time...for a dialogue coach. I really don't think it will completely suck, but merely be mediocre, and comparing it to the first two will only make it seem lamer. Gotta remember it's only a trailer, and the Phantom Menace had one of the best trailers I've seen (and look how that turned out). I'm there opening day regardless (hey, I saw Batman and Robin opening day and this can't be that bad).

  • But had they done so I'm sure he'd be super-excited about T3 right now. And if they flew him out to the set first class he would have already proclaimed this the best movie ever. If I were them I'd still try to buy a good review from Harry, as I'm sure a good review by AICN would easily be worth $5000 in ticket sales.

Yeah, I think it'll blow, too, but that doesn't mean I want it ignored. I'm still interested in getting as much coverage as I can, because whether it'll be excellent, so-so, or an out-and-out dog, it's still the third Terminator movie and as such I still want info!

Like someone else said, it's got everything you could want in a summer blockbuster. Heck, I liked the FIRST trailer, too. But the jury's still out on this one as far as I am concerned, because I remember that the trailers for a certain little film called Phantom Menace also rocked the house--and yet the movie itself was, well, a wee bit disappointing, shall we say? Anyway, here's hoping I'm wrong and T3 kicks ass. Toppu o Nerae!

    by morrissey'sghost

I've just seen the trailer and it looks as though T3 may have more than its share of thrills and spills. I'm predicting a hit, but at the risk of sounding self-contradictory, I also have to say that the trailer oozes cheese and Arnie looks far too old for this shit. If only Cameron had done this picture and given it the awesome unifying look of the first two, or, failing Cameron, McTiernan (I mean the McTiernan of PREDATOR, DIE HARD and THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, of course, not the McTiernan of LAST ACTION HERO, ROLLERBALL and BASIC, of course).

It would have been a great way for him to have "eased" back into directing following the unsurpassable (in B.O. and pop culture terms, if not quality) TITANIC, in the same way as Spielberg turned again to the JURASSIC PARK franchise after the "unbetterable" SCHINDLER'S LIST.

    Why T3 will probably succeed.

    by syd mead

    First off...
    1. It's a little late in the game to bitch about Arnie's acting after 20+ years of this Terminator shit. That's why he got 30 million, to stand like a card board cut out and say four lines. People expect wood, even if he looks like old drift wood. If he sat and emoted it would be over in 4 minutes.
    2. It maybe cheese but it sells like hell on the international market. All T3 has to do is 200 million with it's sucky PG13. The rest comes from "la foreign markets."
    3. X2 and Matrix Reloaded are the only movies to slow this to a crawl. Learning from past summers, there PLENTY of room for shit that goes b-o-o-m. If MIB2 can make bank, than this shit can.

Like most drooling retards for action, I for one will pay to see a fine ass or shit that blows up big come summer time. It's like reaching for a cold beer on the 4th of July. It's fucking expected. I also hope this succeeds so we get our King Conan. 1 chance in 1,000 that it will.

    by docbosch

...much like Red Dragon was. Where as, I can't believe this movie is getting made to such a degree, that I actually DON'T BELIEVE it's getting made. It doesn't compute. I see the ads, I know it's coming out, but at the same time, it seems so unbelievable. The idea of T3 (or a THIRD Hannibal Lector movie) is so out there, it seems like it can't be true. Like something you'd see in a movie, as an side joke "Hey, that marquee said 'Terminator 3'/ 'Silence Of the Lambs 3'/'Back To The Future 5'. That's funny, cause that could never really happen". Hannibal was understandable because it took so long to get made, and was such a big deal when it finally did, but Red Dragon just come out of nowhere (even though I followed it's entire progress), and had no distinct feel to it, just a rehash of the first. T3 would be more graspable if Cameron was involved, because then it would feel like a real Terminator movie. Maybe that

    Warner Bros Listen Up Pls

    by captdanielroe

WB needs to stop sucking. I've followed your evolution from a studio with healthy bottom-line ambitions (First Batman) to a soulless entity that thinks not of films but of franchises, like so many Walmart outlets.____________
Seriously, I know you guys; I've been on conference calls with your people numerous times over the years and have friends of friends on the inside there. I don't mean to besmirch the individuals who have earnest intentions but WB must learn a vital lesson: Entertainment needs to be Art first, cash crop second. P. Jackson, Lucas, Marvel Entertainment: Those guys are obviously setting out to make stunning, lasting, pieces of kick-ass pop art FIRST, and cash cows second. (And when they err, it is usually traceable to efforts to make their "product" more "commercial".)_____________
If T3 is the movie I see advertised in this international trailer, then it's okay; it's a Twinkie beside quality croissants but we'll still eat it. However, the trailer you folks cut and approved is a trailer for a truly clueless and pathetic piece of pablum. Not an opiate for the masses but a mere tastless pacifier. Obviously you can make bucks with movies like Scooby Doo, the Mummies, etcetera. But at the end of the day you've only paid off your SUVs. You haven't got cash to burn on a stable of Arabian thoroughbreds. (Matrix notwithstanding.) Look at it that way and please take that as an incentive to pick the right artists and guide them with a lighter hand. The Wachowskis are pretty great but there are hundreds more like them, idling in unemployment or slaving on stupid scripts dictated by executives whose talent does not lie in storytelling.____________
The next time you think about giving some corporate type any input on the creative side, yourself included, first ask him to tell you a long anecdote or draw an amusing cocktail napkin cartoon---you need to see whether that person has any right to take an active role in crafting entertainment for the masses.

  • They're actually doing the plot they should. Ok. Good deal. End of the world, rise of the machines is clearly the best scenario for a T3 storyline, and it makes sense from a sequel/prequel point of view since it's the nexus point of everything in the Terminator universe. The effects look pretty cool, except that Terminatrix endoskeleton, which just plain looks bad, but hey, whatthefuck. Flying hunter-killers, armies of bots, struggling survivors, it all LOOKS good. And then you turn on the audio... and every bit of dialogue is just absolute crap... and you feel the tears well up inside because you know how painful this will be. That T3 script is utter crap. "She'll be back." "It is time." Shoot me. Please. My fifteen-year-old cousin could write a better T3 script. I could shit a better script. I guess this is what we're getting tho, and I'll still see it. Oh well. Shit happens.

Morissey's Ghost: Cameron passed on T3 because of Andy Vanja.

Vanja is the Producer on the project, and also the co-owner of the franchise (along with his partner, Mario Kassar.) Back in the mid-90's, Vanja & Kassar's company, Carolco, went deep into bankruptcy and all the properties they owned the rights to went on the auction block. 50% of the Terminator franchise was among their properties (the other 50% belonged to the movies' producer and Cameron's ex-wife, Gale Ann Hurd. She has since sold her share.) Just a few days before Carolco's properties auction came around, Cameron had lunch with Vanja, and the two of them talked for a few hours about various things, one of them being Jim's desire to make another Terminator film, this time for Fox. Not once did Vanja say anything about the property rights being auctioned off in mere days, let alone his intention of buying the project back. But sure enough, he and Kassar put up enough money to win the bid and the rights stayed with them. When Cameron (and Fox chief Bill Mechanic) heard about this, they were furious. Cameron was not subsequently ruled out as a possible writer or director of the ensuing films, but it didn't matter. He was adamant that he would never again work with or for Andy Vanja because he felt so betrayed. Personally, I think Jim will have the last laugh. The whole world knows T3 and T4 aren't Cameron's babies, and the overwhelming early response is that there's no way they could be as good without him.
