USA Today Sez: ED Dead'' DREW CAREY Renewed'' ANGEL On The Bubble'' Learn The Fate Of Your Favorite Show!!

Herc read Tim Minear’s fourth-season “Angel” finale last night and got so excited he couldn’t fall asleep. Motherfucking brilliant!! Brilliant!!!! The setup for season five is genius!! Yet another old friend is back, and that friend has never been this entertaining!! Hilarious, surprising and so, so cool.

But will “Angel” get its fifth season?? It better, man!! With no new “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” spinoff this fall, word is some of the best “Buffy” writers are going to be emigrating back to the WB, turning “Angel” into a kind of all-star production.

The season finale of Angel ends with a cliffhanger which will likely never be resolved once the WB cancels the show. Now I'm beginning to understand how pissed Farscape fans are at the Sci-Fi channel.

    It's all about cutting expenses

    by Darth Brooks

The name of the game is COST CONTROL this year - - how many of these shows got dumped because of the expense of making the show? Reality shows are DIRT CHEAP - - that's why ABC cleared the decks with multi-day showings of "I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here," etc. Expect another year of that tripe. Oh, and a half-dozen more "American Idol" clones. PS CBS paid waay too much for that 3-month wonder, "Big Fat Greek Life" - what a fad show to put on. Bubble, my butt - - it's gone.

    Futurama, we hardly knew ye....

    by The Yodeler

I had something really elegant wrote out about this subject, but the god damn computer erased it. Fuck you Fox, for killing this show, that and Andy Richter, which was one of the better new shows of last season. And fuck you for all of your goddamn reality shows. Matter of fact, fuck all stations for doing that. There is a reason that I dont watch that much TV anymore. And fuck your mommas fox execs, and your little dog's too. Whew, I feel much better now. By the way, does anyone know if the so called finished episodes of futurama will ever air?

  • April 8, 2003, 12:32 a.m. CST

Does anyone still watch Drew Carey?

    by yneway

I loved the show when it first came on, but once it became the Drew, Mimi, and Drew's Brother show I got tired of it. Lewis and Oswald are the best parts of the show, but don't get much screen(at least a few seasons ago). Has it gotten better? Wish Andy Richter got a second(third?) chance. I loved it.

  • April 8, 2003, 12:33 a.m. CST

    Dragnet on the bubble?!?!

    by tecnocrat

Hello! ABC, this is probably the best police show on TV nowadays. It certainly beats the hell out of Law and Order! It's funny, it's interesting, and Ed O'Neill is a very good Joe Friday. Keep it alive!

Whoa, the Practice? How the mighty have fallen.....

    by TheMatarife

I'm shocked they might cancel it, it used to be one of the more strong shows in ABC's lineup, till David Kelly started fucking up.

    I really missed MIRACLES tonight.

    by Jarek

I really did notice the gap in my night tonight. Even though only 5 episodes aired, I was hooked, especially after last week. The intriguing story arc that was beginning to unfurl was so bloody interesting. But no, the show was cut down just as it got really good. Fuck ABC. I hate TV. If Angel goes, that will leave me with..... hmm.... 24. Yup, that's it. That's all the scripted, dramatic television I'll be watching. And The Shield (though I have to download those due to my lack of FX).

    Andy Richter

    by xturricanx

Andy Richter was such a good show, better than most of the sitcoms on TV, perfect fit in Fox's Sunday lineup, better than Oliver Beene, better than that awful The Pitts, heck, even better than the current season of the Simpsons, FOX needs to smarten up... wait, they're FOX...

  • April 8, 2003, 1:13 a.m. CST

Suposedly all of the Futurama episodes will air.

    by Smeg For Brains

They will be shown when ever fox doesn't feel like fucking the show over, and when the satanic right of "football" doesn't interfere with it. The reason it was "cancelled" was because Fox dicked the show around so much and they had enough of these numerous unshown episodes that they could use that as an excuse not to order a new season. They insisted that they were not cancelling the show, just that they didn't see the point in ordering a new season of a show that they had a seasons worth of episodes backlogged of. Well since in the real world everyone who works on Futurama have families to feed and bills to pay they can't take the year off, so they move on and get new jobs. Of course the rich cocksuckers at Fox know this and they knew that they were cancelling a successful show with many fans, so they weasled out of the blame. When it comes time next year Fox can say, "well we can't get a new season of Futurama because no one is left to make it, but we didn't cancel it". Why would they cancel a successful show? Well because Matt Groening negotiated the same deal that he had on the Simpsons, where fox has no say over the contents of the show. Fox can only enforce FCC guidlines, but the other aspects of the show are hands off. Of course since all the fox execs think they know how to make shows "better" they want control. So they wanted the uncontrollable show gone. The only reason they aren't doing this to the Simpsons as well is that it has been on so long, and is such a huge cash cow for them. They can accept it because of all the bucks they get. Of course Fox is now the network that would have cancelled many of the hit shows they have had if it was run this way then. X-files, one of their biggest shows ever, would have never made it past the first season under this current Fox system.

  • April 8, 2003, 1:18 a.m. CST

Oh well, no need to watch TV next fall

    by jocutus

I've seen more episodes of futurerams since it started on cartoon network than I ever saw in "primetime" first runs. Thanks Fox! Also, I'll miss Robbery Homicide Division and Boomtown if it gets axed, too. I guess people don't realize there are other good crime shows than Law & Order. And why is fastlane still on the bubble? Axe it already!!!! Reality shows are killing TV, but soon the networks will start to miss the ability to make money from syndicating their shows and produce real series again, right? I mean, no one watches re-runs of survivor or joe millionaire . . or will they? .. .

  • April 8, 2003, 1:26 a.m. CST

So glad The Pitts are getting canned!

    by JTG825

    Man that show sucks ass!

  • April 8, 2003, 1:39 a.m. CST

    I dunno jocutus

    by jules windex

The damn networks don't seem to consider long term things like syndiction money, unless one of their shows is close to having enough episodes. They seem to be all about instant hits. Sadly, nearly every one of these reality shows has been a hit, while damn good shows like Firefly and Andy Richter are axed before they have any kind of real chance. The networks have no patience to let shows grow into being hits(24 is a rare exception these days). But so many shows would never survive in the current state of things. Cheers(just as a quick example) would be gone after half a season if it debuted today. I worry that it'll be almost nothing but reality shows within another year or two. Thank god for having cable.

    The networks suck and blow....

    by Jimmy Jazz

Do people really want to see wall-to-wall bland sitcoms and reality crap? Doesn't anybody want to take a chance on something different? Imagine if the X-Files premiered in this era of instantaneous audience share. I twould have been cancelled within 12 episodes. Who are these retarded apes that make these decisions? Who the FUCK are these so-called "Nielsen households" that hold the rest of the viewing public hostage with their crappy tastes? I've never met any. This system is so outmoded it's a joke. If Angel and Boomtown are cancelled, the only network show worth watching next year will be 24. I don't think I will watch any new shows because they will either suck and go on forever or be reallt engaging and be cancelled within the year. FUCK THE NETWORKS! FUCK THEM UP THEIR STUPID FUCKING ASSES!!!!!

    by Cap'n Chaos!

The only shows I really watch are Buffy, Angel, Smallville and Adult Swim. Why? Because pretty much every other good show I can think of has been CANCELLED this season. Andy Richter was great. I love Ed and hate that NBC has killed it. If the WB cancels Angel, I may just stop watching their network. I know so many people that watch the show, I don't understand how it can be low in ratings. Wait... it's because the Neilsens are BULLSHIT. Why do people take this antiquated system as fact? No one fills out the diaries right. This SUCKS.

    Early cancellations?

    by DarkZero

Miracles, Veritas, Black Sash, and The Pitts have barely even aired four episodes each, and Oliver Beene, Wanda At Large, and My Big Fat Greek Life just started too. The first group is cancelled and the second group is on the bubble. What economic geniuses at these media companies came up with this "Pay tons of cash for a show, refuse to pay ten to twenty percent more for decent marketing and the cost of airing all the episodes" plan? What an idiotic waste of money! I know that some shows just obviously don't work right from the start, but Miracle and Veritas, regardless of whether you think they were great or absolute suckage, didn't even get a chance. They were pre-empted numerous times and only got about four episodes each on the air. ----- Hey, media VPs! How about taking a high school economics class? Or just turning on a few minutes of a financial news show? If you're not willing to put in the extra ten percent that divides a worthless waste of money from a reasonable investment, then why bother? For the cost of all of these cancelled shows, you could've put their full weight behind a show and ended up with a hit. CBS figured that out with Survivor and CSI. Why are you still acting like it's 1996?

    Fox killing Futurama weirdness.....

    by DrunkStan

From what I can understand in the US, Fox killed Futurama by fucking with the schedules, little or no advertising and normal TV exec bullshit. What's weird is that in the UK, Futurama is shown by Sky One, which happens to be a Fox owned channel. The program is well advertised, never bumped, and appears in a great slot - just after the new airing of a Simpsons episode. It has quite a following, and when the series Region 2 DVDs are released, they always seem to chart reasonbly well. In fact, season 3 is out in a few months. So I ask you, what the fuck is Fox doing in the US???

  • April 8, 2003, 7:52 a.m. CST

    by 1013nomore

It has lost me with poor casting and drifting story lines. I JUST DON'T CARE how kickass a particular episode is. It all just seems like gimickry to me. Bye, Buffy! Bye, Angel. On to something new and as worthwhile as Buffy has consistently been.

  • April 8, 2003, 8:36 a.m. CST

Even "Seinfeld" would have been cancelled...

    by Pongo

If "Seinfeld," one of the most popular shows of all time, had been released today with the same first season it had, it would have been gone after a few months. These TV executives have no idea on how to make a hit anymore. If it's "reality," it's on. If it's not, push it to Friday nights when nobody watches TV. At least 24 is coming back...other than that, it's Red Wings games and NFL Football.

Once KOLCHAK got canned by ABC after one season, I knew I had to make it my destiny one day to right these wrongs. by TVCrazyAdict

This is my first post here, but I feel the TV addict that I am, I needed to speak up...My fingers are crossed that the NBC people realize the little golden nugget of fun that is Ed and renew the show one more season at least to develop the relationship of Ed and Carol. NBC should also err on the side of talent and creativity and RENEW BOOMTOWN- one its best new shows. The Practice...You were my favorite show and one of the best- but oh the wrong turns you have made. It's time to end it, Mr. Kelley. You've got a law firm where 3 of the 6 lawyers have been tried (1 convicted) of murder. I mean - come on. End the show. Angel? Who cares. Drew Carey? That shows been dead for 3 years. And I implore the rest of you - WATCH WEST WING! It's still the higest quality show on Network TV. Good luck to Wanda Sykes, and Andy Richter...Tear...

I felt so guilty for DESPISING this stupid, unfunny movie. And for some wonky universe chain reaction, it undeservedly obtained a sitcom deal? WTF? It's completely unfunny, and the whole idea now is totally sucked dry and contrived. Moreover, this Nia woman is completely UGLY, and she's now become what she allegedly isn't: a superficial, artificial, slim hollywood actress, waiting for the nose job and other cosmetic jobs.... And. SHe's. Not. Funny.

And it can not be stressed enough how much Angel needs to come back next year, it's a better show than 24, Alias or any of HBOs brood.

    98% Craptacular

    by Damitol

The thing I learned from this article is that there is currently very little on TV renewed or cancelled that I could give a shit about. With Farscape gone and Buffy and Futurama soon to follow (word is FOX will burn up the remaining 8 Futuramas during the slow ratings summer) the majority of my TV time will be taken up with news, weather, music videos (when I can find them) and DVDs. I went to the USA Today poll and voted "Don't Care" for virtually all of the shows they listed to keep or cancel (must have been the "on the bubbles"). It seems to get harder and harder to justify paying that cable bill each month.

    My Big Fat Greek Trilogy

    by Prof. Pop-Cult

Teri: The producers envision two more movies, though I don't recall a honeymoon one. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding Anniversary" and "My Big Fat Greek Family Reunion" (which would center around the birth of the couple's first child) have been mentioned. This is like the antithesis to the Matrix and LotR trilogies. Be very afraid.

    BOOMTOWN on the bubble?????????

    by KennyB

WTF man this show is great.......I can never figure out NBC. Live when the pulled Stark RAving Mad a few years ago---no explanation. I mean it had only won the People Choice Award for best new show.Boomtown is good stuff!

I hope the WB doesnt pull a Sci Fi move

    by cooper2000

and cancel it like they did Farscape. There will be a big ol' backlash if that happens. Angel has had a good year and the ratings have been stable. Are they just getting back at Joss for taking Buffy away?// As far as the others... Miracles was cancelled because ABC favors Reality crap which is ashame and Big Fat Greek Life is crap. They changed everything that was charming about the movie to dumb it down to the masses. Stuff like Frasier and Becker need to go away. So all in all, TV is going to the shits. I guess I will just watch cable and DVD.

The Fox screwed the viewer trifecta. I will never understand how Fox can consistently put the most interesting shows on the air...and then not be savvy enough to give them time to catch on. Add Family Guy, The Pitts, The 80's Show, and Undeclared to this list. Heck for that matter add Millennium and Harsh Realm. Does FOX not realize that we will stop sampling any of what they have to offer if we know the series will be cancelled by week 2.

    Greek wedding trilogy?????

    by guerillatokyo

WTF? I hate that fucking movie! Remember the days when good independent movies were sleeper hits like this one? Stuff like Dawn of the Dead and Rocky Horror Picture Show. My big fat greek wedding annversary? Bullshit, they should make my Big Fat Greek Divorce, or how about my Big Fat Greek Custody battle? How about My Big fat Greek Wife Won't Fuck Me, So I Go To Truck Stops For Oral Sex In The Men's Room?

    Drew Carey Apologism, Part Two

    by Agent Cooper

This year has been one of the stronger and funnier late-era seasons for Drew Carey, the episode with Oswald and the balloons ranks high, even though nobody watched it after its move and it had the lowest ratings of any prime-time ABC series -- giving ABC reason to yank it off the air mid-season.

RHD was much better than BOOMTOWN

    by Charles Grady

But that's a moot point now that RHD is long gone, and proved to be MUCH to street smart and multi-ethnic for the CBS HACK crowd. BOOMTOWN is a decent enough show in fits and starts, but the gimmick is a little precious. How many crimes cutesily resolved crimes involving lily white Angelenos can the SAME detectives, beat cops, reporter, DA, and paramedics be somehow tangentially involved in EVERY WEEK? I realize that's the hook, and the acting's GREAT, but the storytelling is awfully precious at times, and LA is not Mayberry. It's a sprawling, multiethnic city which has more than TWO uniformed officers (Gedrick and the fat guy) and is at least 60% non-white. But you wouldn't know that from MAYBERRYTOWN - er, BOOMTOWN. Where are all the Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Armenian, Persian, and Latino cops and criminals? Sorry, Avnet, but BOOMTOWN doesn't look like the LA I know. There are more white people on any given episode of BOOMTOWN than there probably are in the entire city of Los Angeles. Unless Wahlberg and Williamson work out of the Des Moines precinct of the city. The ONCE AND AGAIN-style wispy theme music and New Agey opening credit sequence doesn't do much to dispell the notion that BOOMTOWN, a fave of notoriously bourgeois TV critics, is for the middle-brow FRIENDS network fans who couldn't take the grit of RHD or THE SHIELD. And on another topic, ALIAS has REALLY jumped the shark since Syd and Vaughn became a couple, turning into the Nick and Nora Charles of the convoluted spy world. This season would have been the perfect time to end it. Another year of Rambaldi and Sloane/Sark nonsense just seems superfluous. Plus the show's expensive as hell to produce and doesn't really pull big ratings, so why the renewal??? Must be pressure from a lot of lonely housefraus who dream about Vartan, because the LA TIMES did a report on how ABC can't get male viewers to watch to save their life, that the show's prime audience is women who dig the soap opera elements.

  • April 8, 2003, 7:22 p.m. CST

And another thing - NYPD BLUE got renewed?

    by Charles Grady

Once a great show, but who the hell still watches it? Like THE PRACTICE, I can't believe it's even still on the air, not because it was ever bad, but just...doesn't it ever get old? What started as the most controversial cop show of its day has become about as tame and flat as MURDER, SHE WROTE or MATLOCK.

  • April 8, 2003, 7:24 p.m. CST

    What's the Point?

    by jamsun1227

Birds of Prey - Flew the coop just as it found its wings. Miracles - Took the baton from the X-Files and carried it well into a tangent universe. Fastlane - The feel good, entertaining show of the year with hip dialogue and a well rounded cast. Apparently, we're not supposed to enjoy ourselves that much. Black Sash - Some call it Karate Kid meets Fame. To me, it's the TV version of the movie Only The Strong. Apparently, networks no longer accept diverse casts. Which brings me to my Angel rant - WHy only consider renewing a show if members of a show u let go agree to come back? Plus, like Farscape, doesn't a cult following allow for another season? Which brings me to my point - Whats the point of allowing yourself to enjoy a new show when odds are it's yanked before it grows roots?

  • April 8, 2003, 7:52 p.m. CST

    Angel MUST come back!

    by pleather_grrl

I am so sickened by most of what has been renewed and scared to think of what the Networks (cock masters all) might be thinking up next (I know all the past loosers from all the lame reality shows on one island and they all need to wrassle and the winner marries the broke gay faux- husband! Wooo Hooo!). Shudder!!! Angel might not be super great all the time, but its always fun! SAVE ANGEL!

    Dragnet & The Practice

    by zenda

As good as Dragnet is, it is still getting lower ratings than The Practice did on Sundays. And they moved that show because of low ratings! So, let's move (and save) Dragnet. It is too good to lose. As for The Practice, it has been better this season than last. But still low ratings. But if ABC didn't still like it, why replace Miracles with reruns of The Practice? As for Miracles, it was just too darn good to last on network TV. And that is a crying shame!

    by Heleno

Don't these American networks make any money from selling their products overseas? Obviously quite a few of the better shows on this list are on TV here in the UK and Ireland, but I know for a fact that the French watch Buffy contre les vampires, and I am willing to bet that somewhere they watch Angel too. So if a show is borderline and has international appeal, wouldn't that maybe help? Or are international and DVD revenues a drop in the bucket compared to TV advertising?

Reba gets, that tells you a whole fucking lot abou

    by Walter Sobcheck

Reba McEntire is fucking sick. She looks like some crazy ass Dana Carvey comedy sketch suit, and lets face it, Dana Carvey should have died YEARS ago. Who the fuck watches this shit? Probably people like this lady I used to work at a local Arby's with named Joanne. Her favorite show was Walker Texas Ranger and her husband always waddled in to visit her in his huge ass overalls so he could find out what was for dinner. Andy Richter gets cancelled because people watch Reba. Actually I dunno what Reba's time slot is really but I'm sure its ugly. Jesus fuck.

The only shows that are worth a damn on the air

    by Doo-Bee

Miracles is going bye-bye? Thats bullsh#%!!! One of the coolest shows out there, and they are canning it already? 5 episodes in? Well, at least we can all be greatful that Boston Public is coming back, right? This show is like watching a fat grandma wipe her ass! How many more episodes can they fill in with students hooking up with teachers, while a kid plans a columbine mission on the school all during the class walkout where the senior class vice president was impregnated behind the bleachers? Thats what I love the most about the show: It's gritty realism! Miracles is the type of show that people talk about the next day, and they are pulling the plug. bullsh$%!! Thats the problem with corporate america. They only do formulas that they THINK Joe Consumer wants to watch. Which is why we have all these retarded "Reality" shows, which by the way, are about as real as the fuggin keebler elves! How many dating-game-with-a-twist rehashes can we actually see without taking hot fire pokers and jamming them in our eyes so we don't have to look at that retard Joe Millionaire or any of those other idiots? Critics say American Consumers like the reality shows, but I think we all really don't. People have just flooded the airwaves with it so all we get to pick from is Survivor: the Amazon, or Meet my folks or American Idol, or Nova on PBS. Thank god Crossing Jordan, CSI, CSI:Miami, and all 3 law & Orders are still around. Lord knows we need all the investigating cop stories. Thats what america wants, right? Good ol' safe cop dramas where the bad guy is caught, and the bad guy is always the person you least expect. Forget that bullshit! The only shows that are worth a damn are: Scrubs, Bernie Mac, Miracles, Andy Richter, the Simpsons, 70's show, Smackdown, yes, dear and everybody loves raymond. All "Reality" shows can suck my left nut! ER, friends, you are older than Jesus (Hey-seus), and past your prime. Your only viewers are zombies with no opinions that don't know any better. How many times can someone bring a bomb into the same damn hospital year after year. How many times are all of the friends gonna hook up this year? Pretty soon they will have a wife-swappin episode! Sory about the long winded rant, but christ! I finally catch a show that is creepy, smart and mysterious like Miracles, and they take it off the air! Because there aren't enough viewers. Well, when you shift a show around or don't give it enough time to find an audience, of course it's gonna flag a little in the ratings! Thats it! IF anyone wants to start the revolution, let me know, we'll take over the airwaves, kill everyone of those, idiotic fat-cat, greasy, corporate slimeball tv show producers, and put only smart, sophisticated shows on to jumpstart these zombie viewers into thinking for themselves again. We will burn every "reality" series pilot we find, take every felicity and providence episode, pile them up together melt it into a giant ball of plastic, then push it into a giant hole. Then we will put an out house on top of it, then charge people 50 cents to shit and piss all over that worthless hunk of plastic in the ground. Then we will take the piss-proceeds and invest it into a new tv pilot. Who's with me? Til next time

These are great shows, the type there should be more of on television. But instead they are on the edge of cancellation. What is wrong with the networks. Is NBC going to cancel Ed for the umpteenth weekly airing of dateline or another Law and Order spin-off? Fox, are you going to cancel Andy Richter Conrols the Univers when it would easily be a good counterpart to the Simpsons That 70's show or Malcolm in the Middle? And the WB should realize that Angel should be paired with Smallville because they share the same type of audience and could only help each other. Keep these shows damn it!

    by Rcfan

That damn show took a perfectly good spot away from so many good shows on fox. Family guy, greg the bunny, undeclared, futurama all died while this joke of a show got new life. Just when i thought it would die fucking wb picks it up and is probably gunna knock Greetings from Tuson off. You can make fun of me for liking that show but it beats the hell out of all these shows trying to be a live version of the simpsons. I mean god for bid we have a show without a dumbass white father that drinks to much. Its been done.

    by Racebelly

First off, FUCK YOU FOX YOU ASS FUCKING MONKEY WHORES!!! I can't believe they would cancel one of the best shows on TV. I just hope that Cartoon Network will find a way to produce more episodes. Fox used to have a pretty decent lineup, X-Files, Simpsons, Futurama. Granted X-Files had run it's course. But, Futurama was just getting started. So much potential. As for the Simpsons, definitely one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately, this season has been overall abysmal. Unless Fox gets some new writers for the Simpsons I may have to do the unthinkable & take the Simpsons out of my weekly lineup of shows to watch. Anyway, hopefully the Fox execs will all burn in hell & the network will go under. A guy can dream can't he? P.S. FUCK FOX & THEIR REALITY SHOW NONSENSE!!!

    I agree with Grady

    by Johnny Dagger

While I would like Boomtown to be renewed, I must agree that "Robbery / Homicide Division" was a GREAT show that didn't get a chance to really shine. Sizemore was doing great work on the program. ***** As for Black Sash, I'd have rather they kept the show around - they could have shoved it to Friday nights rather than cancel it altogether. I mark for any show that prominently features Russel Wong.
