Vampires... Werewolves... Just how badass is UNDERWORLD' The Lakebeast Knows!

Published at:  Apr 07, 2003 11:27:56 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Remember all those pics we had on UNDERWORLD that made it look like it might possibly be a cool movie? The synopsis and character descriptions? Remember when you thought that a Kate would make a sweet sucker in leather? Well... They had a tiny test screening in Los Angeles... and guess what, our spy, Lakebeast was there... From the sound of it... Our gut feeling that the film was cool, is right. Sounds like UNDERWORLD is turning out mighty fine!

Hey Harry,

I live in L.A. and last Thursday attended a screening (I believe it was the first time the film was shown ever) of Underworld. It was in a screening room at a facility where the director Len Weisman had been working on the edit. He spoke for a minute before the movie and explained the print we were going to see had been blown up off of the avid and the resolution would be poor. Also many sound and visual effects, color correcting, music were not yet complete. There were only maybe 25-30 people there.

I really liked this movie, but then again Werewolves are my favorite monster....and they are fighting Vampires....yes please! The film borrows heavily from Matrix, Crow, Dark City, but so what, I like all those movies.

The flick begans as a group of Vampires (led by Selene played by Kate Beckensdale) called the death dealers are out tracking a group of Werewolves (called Lycans) who are in turn targeting a human being (Scott Speedman).

The scene goes underground to the subway where a major fight/shoot out occurs. The Vamps trying to take out the Lycans who are trying to catch the human. It turns out the Lycans have been trying to combine Vampire and Werewolf DNA (at one point a character says "Even at a molecular level they destroy each other"). Turns out the human they have been tracking has the genetics to allow the combination to happen. The head Lycan Lucian is upset they didn't get the human so decides the only way to get the job done is to go himself. Lucian also breaks up two Lycans in wrestling in wolf form for the amusment of the other Lycan, I thought that was a nice touch.

Meanwhile Selene had been investigating things on her own and finds the human's apartment just as he arrives home and the Lycans move in for the kill, after a crazy fight scene (very Matrix/Hong Kong inspired) she manages to escape and saves the human but not before he is bit (and I mean chomped on) by Lucian. After the encounter Selene realizes who Lucian is and the Vampires believed he had been killed by Kahn (who is in charge of the Vampires and has the hots for Selene).

There are lots of plot twists and turns, if you are really interested let me know and I will try to give you a "blow by blow". But the film is very cool. There are new fangled weapons both sides have like guns that shoot bullets loaded with liquid silver so it goes right into the bloodstream. There is a great fight scene between a big ole badass werewolf and a Vampire fighting with whips ala Indiana Jones. Lots of sweet shots of Werewolves crawling down hallway walls ala Aliens. I was a bit confused at times about what the Vampire powers are and I don't really remember how Kahn, one of the leads even died.

The direction is really good, but it's alot to download in just one viewing. I would've liked to see more of a scene where some Vampire elders are arriving via train and are ambushed by the Lycans, didn't seem like the Vamps put up any kind of a fight even though another Elder Victor is a total bad ass (at one point he graps a Wolf by the throat and does the old lift and tear). What happens to Victor is pretty cool too but I don't want to spoil it.

At this stage the transformations looked pretty cheesy and lots of post production is needed (especially the Werewolves!!). They were still plenty of scenes where you can see all the wires attached to the actors!! But overall the movie kicks ass, I think Len Weisman is going to have future in film.

Genre fans can start getting excited for Underworld!!! Hope this was helpful or interesting or informative or something!!

Take Care,

Lakebeast

    "The REAL Ghostbusters"

    by some dude

This movie sounds like a rip-off of an episode of "The REAL Ghostbusters" where Venkman and the gang end up in a town where vampires have imprisoned all the "normal" people. Our heroes break out with the townspeople, but it is a full moon... Turns out the townspeople are werewolves! The werewolves start brawling with the vamps and they bite each other and both groups become were-vamps. Luckily for the Ghostbusters, the were-vamps can't cross moving water so they ride Ecto-1 across a bridge to safety. Man, I loved that show. They should do an animated feature of that.

If I have to even hear about another derivative plot about Vampire Councils that meet in sinister boardrooms to discuss the fate of their "race" I will fucking kill someone. Would vampires really come together at big tables in suits to view powerpoint slides about their fight for racial dominence? They are the living dead not the dying alive (today's executive workforce)! What is this B-list comic-book-fueled bullshit about vampires and werewolves being mortal enemies!?! It's stupid and unnecessary. Vamps and wolves are supposed to be creatures that are evil by nature who are untainted by petty human gang warfare bullshit. Oh, and add a fucking subplot about goddamn vampire DNA and you've just about covered every single lazy vampire movie convention of the past decade. Please be original! Fuck. No, you know what...forget it, go ahead put the nail in coffin (as it were) for vampire movies: why don't have a computer virus somehow destroy the vampires at the end of the fucking movie. It isn't that I don't want to see Vampires fight Werewolves. I do. However, when it's done in a ridiculous NewJackCity context with Wolf druglords against Vamp pimps...It's a DUMB idea that displays a considerable lack of good writing, originality, and fucking sense. Come on, Hollywood! Quit reducing the walking dead and lycanthropes to gangbangers and chairmen of the board!

Remember when vampires & werewolves were supernatural creatures?

    by st.buggering

Why do we keep getting this horseshit about chemistry and DNA, and all the guns and weapons? It might have been interesting the first time someone tried it (which was quite some time ago now), but it's getting tiresome. How about if someone makes a vampire movie in which they're the cursed undead, are bad guys, use supernatural powers and influence, don't use guns, and (here's the crucial bit) do NOT know kung fu. At this point revisionist vampirism has become the norm, and is no longer original. Returning to the old legends would actually be thinking out of the box at this point. God, I'll be happy when Buffy is over.

    by heleno

While I agree that the whole DNA thing is kinda overdone in Blade and the like, I gotta defend Buffy. With the exception of season four and the whole Initiative thing, there has been no real science involved with vampires - and even in the Initiative there was none of this hard science. To the extent that anything vaguely scientific has been said about them, they've gone on to contradict themselves about it regularly. So, much as it goes against your instincts, blame Blade not Buffy (hmm, good tongue-twister that). And as for lesbian vampires, I sat through Vampyros Lesbos once and it was dire, just awful. It wasn't porn, it wasn't horror, it wasn't art house. It was some horrible limbo in between all three and it sucked ass not blood.

but I was sitting in a room full of boy geeks at the time during a "vampire-a-thon" and they all slated it too. That coulda been because it came after Nosferatu and the Lugosi Dracula though, and before Lost Boys and Blade, so everyone wanted it to be done already.

    Great Vampire Book

    by ray garraty #47

If anyone out there wants to read a new twist on the Vampire Genre, go seek out a book called "The World on Blood." I forgot the author. Some of the Vampires join support groups to fight the blood addiction. Sunlight does not kill but merely irritates them, and the more blood they drink the "higher" they get, gaining superhuman strength and endurance. There is one scene where a "sober" vampire is about to infiltrate a vampire fortress but he's just like a regular guy because he hasn't had blood in a while. He needs to go find someone to feed on to become a badass. Also, there's lots of erotic stuff in it. A lot of people claim to like the "Traveling Vampire Show," but that book is horrible compared to The World on Blood. Seriously.

To say that the kind of people who come to this site only like 1) Vampires v Werewolves 2) Superman v Batman 3) Anything by Jim Cameron 4) cos Harry tells em to is just maybe overstating his influence. I think the reason this site's talking about potential coolness is cos it largely crept in under the radar, its a neat, if hardly revolutionary idea, and the production art from a few weeks ago looked promising, plus the reasons given in my earlier post. I'd be astonished if AICN or the TBs didn't go nuts for it.

Not only do these films cannabalise themselves over and over, now they are starting to cannabalise other films as well. First of all this movie will be a shitty interpritation of Romeo and Juliette. Second everyone who is involved with it seems to be intent on cramming every semi-hip idea that has put into B-horror and Si-Fi films for the last ten years. This will be the same old garbage at best. When will film makers return to respecting the horror genre and actually start making scary movies. I would like to see a movie that is actually scary. And as for all this style over content film making: the seventies are over, and the people making films then could make those kind of films better then this sencond generation sloppy teeny-hippster crap that is being chund out right now. Sorry for the rant, I love horror films and seeing movies like this getting made just breaks my heart.

That's the most blatant poster rip off since Boston Public recycled the old One Sheet for Teachers--only that at least waited twenty years. by smeg for brains

All of the idiots comparing scientific takes on Vampires and Werewolves to Buffy have obviously never watched the show. They probably just tossed it off as Dawsons Creek with Vampires. Well in Buffy there is no science. Vampires are demons reanimating the human hosts, and removing their souls. It is all just a modern take on all the old myths, even down to emphasizing at every opportunity that a Vampire has to be invited into a home. Also as for the kung fu Vampire fighting in Buffy and other more recent Vamp movies. Um if you were a super powered supernatural being with incredible strength and dexterity how would you fight? Would you use huge avoidable roundhouse punches and slaps, or Vegas showgirl kicks? HELL NO. You would kick ass kung fu style. Not that they should use specific styles of martial arts (unless it is in the character), but Martial Arts are effective because they are fighting styles that depend on strength, and dexterity, and focus on the most pure fighting moves. If you were automatically given the speed and power to do fast martial arts style fighting I think it would only be natural to do that. Not that every Vampire movie has to be a martial arts action movie, but the action based movies, like Blade, almost have to use that kind of fighting or they just look stupid.

    by zer0cool2k2

What I was saying was that DiDi Conn was never in Moonlighting. The fantastic rhyming Miss Agnes Dipesto was played by Allyce Beasley. DiDi was however, in Grease (1 and 2), and some (I'm sure) craptastic movie based on the Debby Boone song "You Light Up My Life". But, I am amused by how Moonlighting worked it's way into a talkback about Werewolves and Vampires. "Lost Boys" made me want to sleep all day and party all night, but "Near Dark" just might be one of the greatest vampire movies of all time. *********************Jesse - "Let's just say I fought for the South....We lost." - Classic stuff!***************** And Lance Henriksen is the sexiest tomboy beanpole on..........no, you know what? You're right, Buffy plays fast and loose with the rules sometimes, but it's mythos is rooted in the classics. Well, the Initiative brought in a scientific element, but it was kinda' lame. But actually, Buffy is really about growing up different in a world that wants everyone to be the same, it just wraps real life in a fantastical situation, and manages to still handle it in the most realistic way on television. ....................And don't you guys think if you lived a few hundred years, you might get around to studying some martial arts at some point, whether you travel to the Orient, or just dropped by the Cobra Kai in the '80s......

Haven't you figured that out yet? BTW, I don't think tossing around DNA and pseudo-science makes something more plausible at all--it's just more stomachable to people who don't like mysticism in their fantasy. Regardless, I think this thing looks fun enough just because of the premise(as others are saying), but I think that DNA stuff was just added to be different from Stoker, Rice, Hammer, Whedon and all. More power to 'em, but alone it doesn't contribute much in my opinion. Mystery/magic is more fun to me. ******* I still think that one sheet could have been much cooler.

    by ivan_mtl

I have no idea whether the film's storyline will be any good, but I must admit to being intrigued by the concept of werewolves battling vampires. I think I can trace this back to my early days of collecting comic books when I stumbled across an issue of WEREWOLF BY NIGHT that featured a battle with Dracula (who was appearing in his own mag, TOMB OF DRACULA... back in the days when Marvel Comics were publishing a variety of different genres). Also, there are the classic Universal films/monsters as well which had a HUGE impact on my childhood (my walls were literally covered with Monster Magazine pin-ups). Anyway, I am greatly looking forward to this apparent resurgence of interest by film studios in producing "monster" flicks - with VAN HELSING topping my list. By the way, I even enjoyed THE MONSTER SQUAD to some degree (for what it was worth).

I never said that Buffy was perpetrating the the business of scientific vampirism. At that point, I was bitching about Kung Fu vampires. Two separate bitches in one post. I should have separated the stream-of-consciousness a little better. Mind you, I still don't like Buffy, but at least they're not doing the DNA/disease thing.

    Sounds like...

A Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocylypse LARP was filmed. Either that, or the creaters of that movie didn't get the licencing for said games... Some of that plot sounded scaringly familiar to me... Yeah I'm a gamer, TRY AND CATCH ME, BIIAATTCCHH!!!

    seen it too...

    by madtommy

can't say how 'cos it'd put lives at stake, but i have seen it and it is very cool... just to let you know pedantic one, the liquid silver was silver nitrate and even the bullets it was in looked damn cool... i did love the film though and can't wait to see it properly once it is finished... the fight scenes rock and the whole look of the film is fantastic, so don't worry, it will rock...

    Enough Already

    by ru4realdude

It seems to me maybe people need to stop comparing this damn movie to past Vamp and Were films and anything else it's been compared to and just look at it for what it is. I mean come on people if we pick apart every new movie all we'll find is rehashes and rip-offs of every other movie we've ever seen. I for one am going to reserve my judgment for when I see the movie. From the look of the trailer I am mildly interested and hoping for the best. (crosses fingers)
