YeeeeeeeeeeeeHA!!!! FIREFLY Flies Again -- On DVD!!

Published at:  Apr 07, 2003 9:08:24 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Firefly,” Joss Whedon’s widely adored but very cancelled Foxnet space Western, is coming to a DVD player near you -- and it’s coming in fabulous widescreen!

According to a never-steered-Herc-wrong-yet source close to the project:

No release date yet, but Fox Home Entertainment
will be releasing. It sports the entire season, including the unaired eps, in 16:9 glory and, most likely, in the "correct" order. With lots of goodies.

I am – Hercules!!

does it mean that just what was aired plus the three un-aired episodes will be on the DVD? Or will we get anymore? Such as something that kind of puts a conclusion to this wonderful masterpiece. Commentaries will be interesting indeed.

finally, Fox makes a smart decision! now all we need is the live action Tick series on DVD and we'll be in good shape. Joss Whedon=genius. oh, by the way, has anyone heard about how there are serious production problems and budget overruns that are giving the final few eps of Buffy lots of trouble?

Which, of course, points out that all of the folks slamming it never bothered to watch it. The first couple of eps I watched were okay, but didn't grab me. Then I caught a couple more and YOW! I wonder how many of the folks who gave up after the "first" episode would have continued to watch if they'd been run in the right order??

I almost wish this would become the norm. a show would be aired for 4-6 weeks and then a DVD would be released with the rest of the shows. then popular shows could just have a DVD come out every 6 months. No commercials or rescheduling or repeats or cancellations...I know, I know, there are a hundred reasons why that will never happen.

    by 1013nomore

That's where my tastes are. And those who didn't like the show don't have to buy or rent the DVD's. It's a perfect world! It's funny how some people are annoyed that someone else has an opposite taste in TV programs. I never liked Family Guy. So I didn't watch it. I'm not watching the re-runs on Cartoon Network. I'm not buying or renting the DVD's. Truly, there is no accounting for taste!

How about a new Talk Back Rule...

    by damitol

New rule: If the crux of your post in a TV Talk Back is along the lines of "That show sucks and anyone who likes it is a retard", then you also have to HONESTLY list the television shows you watch and record on a regular basis so we can assess your worthiness to even comment on the program in question. Otherwise, your post doesn't count. Anyway - on topic - I was one of those who was bored with the first couple of episodes, but stuck with it because of my trust in Joss Whedon. As any Firefly fan knows, the show just got better with each passing episode, and I'll admit I realy would like to see it in order. As long as they keep the price in the +/-$30 range at Best Buy, this one will be a nice set to own.

    This Rules!!

    by hjermsted

I 've watched all of the Cowboy Bebop shows + the movie... enjoyed them greatly... however Firefly has the superior writing. The plots actually hold up! :) Firefly's use of the western/sci fi co-mingling was well down and made perfect sense in the context of the show. ************** Firefly was easily the best new show this season. Fox mishandled Firefly from the get go (not showing the pilot episode first, showing subsequent episodes out of order, bad timeslot, constant pre-emptions for sports... the list is legend). In spite of all this, the show still averaged around 4 million viewers an episode. Fox is smart and knows if 1/10 of these people end up buying the DVD set they'll have a successful release on their hands. Thanks to word of mouth and tape/vcd trading the fanbase for Firefly has actually been growing since it went off the air. I advise all the naysayers to give the show a REAL try. Borrow your friend's Firefly DVD set and enjoy the series. Going into a new show with a pre-established list of what to hate about it is pretty pathetic. The way to approach art (and YES, Firefly is art) is to start off your intake of a new work with a clean perceptual slate. In other words, clear your mind and let the artist(s) take you someplace new. --- mattro

    Delete BR Tick's post, Herc!

    by archdiver

If you didn't understand what TV Casualty was talking about, Tick, you screwed up the entire thread with your idiotic string of exclamation points. Five gets the point across. Anymore just shows you to be a daft wanker. **** Voice O Reason, thank you for summing up my feelings on these idiots who jump on this thread just to pan the show. And whoever suggested that anyone who dumps on a show in a thread back it up with a list of what they watch is both overly wishful and masochistic. Getting them to do that is nigh impossible, especially since they are only trolling, and some may actually watch the show in question. And if they really dislike what we consider to be quality TV, do you really want to read them defending The Bachelor and Fastlane? AD out

there must be enough fans willing to shell out the $$ for the DVD, otherwise no one would bother releasing it. (I guess this also means there weren't enough fans to keep the show from being cancelled in the first place). Thank you Joss, sorry the show didn't make it.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather watch the shows in their original 16:9 ratio and get goodies (you know Joss will comment on at least the pilot) than squint at my computer screen at some bootleg newtork version with shitty FOX graphics littering the bottom of the screen... (not to mention some of us do live in the sticks and can't get broadband access yet)

    by mirrim

Yes, there is a Goddess! (and her name is Enarra...) and She can do great things. Keeping Firefly on the air was, alas, not one of them...
For those of you who hated Firefly on the basis of one episode, go back and take a good long look at the first ep of Farscape. It was (dare I say it here) BORING. It DRAGGED. Having watched TV scifi since the days of the first Outer Limits, I'm willing to give any true scifi (as opposed to horror masquerading as same) a chance. I turned Farscape off after the first 20 minutes.
Firefly had, for all its merits (and there were many) three big problems: Fox, besides not giving it a chance, gave it the suckiest time slot it is possible to give any show, much less one that has to attract young single males for the almighty demographics (9 PM Fri., gimme a break!); writing and plotting which required the viewer to pay attention, dammit: blink and you missed something important for two episodes later; and a hetaira (ancient Greek term; a cross between a high-class hooker and a political hostess, with the artistic training of a geisha) who was the most "respectable" member of the crew. I'm sure that gave the execs at Fox (whose idea of innovative programming is another dumb sitcom or Celebrity Boxing match) major willies, especially after it became clear that she did not restrict her business to the opposite sex. All this at the same time John Ashcroft was covering up bare-breasted Classical-style statues and holding in-house prayer breakfasts at DOJ. Fear and loathing won the day. Thank the gods for DVD!

This news has made the fuck out my day! I salivate when considering the extra feature possibilities. Perhaps the cast interviews done by the web team? The Gag Reel? Joss commentary on Serenity 1/2, Objects in Space and Our Mrs. Reynolds? Too much!-----------------------------As far as Firefly-bashers go, I cannot fathom what goes on in your heads. You gave up after the "first" episode ("The Train Job")? How could you not like Mal Reynolds, the coolest motherfucker in space, kicking that lackey into Serenity's turbines? Is it really true that no one has a fucking attention span of over an hour? What does it take to get you people to give something a chance? Firefly fucking deserved it. If I ever had reservations about hating people before, the fact that Firefly couldn't find an audience really seals the deal for me. This was the single most emotional, engaging and intelligent show, and cast, ever assembled. Fucking ever. The family (yes, I said family) of Serenity had me by the heartstrings from minute one. Accept no substitutes. Whedon, you've got my 40 bucks in the bag, dude. Fuck all y'all.

    better on DVD than TV

    by pooneil

Watched one episode. Didn't like it. Watched a second episode, still didn't like it. By the time I tried desperately to enjoy a third episode, I realized that the characters still all looked the same to me, the hand-held camera made me queasy, and the revolvers and winchester rifles were just ridiculous. Cool spaceship, I guess, but the characters were a bunch of dicks.

    by villa restil

I'm hoping they'll be released soon. I really want to see those three unaired episodes.

Fox displayed amazing incompetence in the way they mishandled this show. Almost everything you could do to screw things up, they managed to do it.

I have to admit that I had mixed feelings about the first show. SciFi and Western mixes have a really bad track record. Doctor Who's The Gunfighters, Star Trek's dreadful Spectre of the Gun, The Prisoner's Living in Harmony... By episode two, I was feeling like it might be okay after all. By the end of the third one, I was hooked.

The only aspect I don't like is there are only three more I haven't seen.
