Ain't It Cool News (

UPDATED!! Way Interesting BUFFY Bits (Courtesy Jane E & Others)!!

I am – Hercules!!

The short version:

1) “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” writer and comedy genius Jane Espenson returns to the WB next season to write for worthy slayer archrival “Gilmore Girls.”

2) Espenson says Team Whedon was at one time contemplating a “Slayer School” spinoff built around the potentials (with Willow and Kennedy as headmistresses?). Note that in a brief interview with TV Guide this week, “Buffy” mastermind Joss Whedon said:

“[The end of 'Buffy'] doesn't mean the Buffy universe is closed or that there aren't potential spinoffs, like Willow or whatever.”

3) Emma Caulfield was not the first choice to play Anya.

The long version:

Hey Herc,

Just got back from seeing Jane Espenson speak here at Ball State University. It was mostly a Q&A session, with one very interesting point. When asked about the spinoff, Jane responded that there will be no Faith spinoff due to Eliza taking another pilot. She mentioned a possible "Slayer School" spinoff, using some of the Potentials (who would be recast), but that did not seem that likely as it doesn't feel right, and would most likely not happen unless Joss changed his feelings about it. No mention of the Willow spinoff, but the feeling was that there will be no spinoff.

Other highlights include :

- Jane will be writing for Gilmore Girls next year.

- Anya was never meant to be a recurring character. She was originally meant for two episodes, but Emma Caulfield was kept on for good acting, basically because she was funny. The original actress for Anya (no name was given) chose not to pursue the role because it was for only two episodes.

- Afterwards, I got to meet her face to face. I thanked her for everything, specifically the show, and then I quickly asked if they had written the next Buffy game, to which she replied "No, the guys that did it came and asked us a few questions, but they wrote it themselves." She probably thought I was talking about the first game, but either way, they didn't write the second game.

If you use this, call me "Chet"

WHITHER 7.20? Odd, you say, that there are so many spoilers floating around for 7.21 ("End of Days," written by Espenson and Doug Petrie), but almost none for 7.20 ("Touched," written by Rebecca Rand Kirshner)? Turns out 7.19 ("Empty Spaces," written by Drew Greenberg) just wrapped and they're just starting to shoot 7.21. Insiders explain that the final three are being shot out of order to accommodate Eliza Dushku's ongoing "Heroine" pilot shoot. Apparently Faith has a lot to do in 7.20, not so much in 7.21.

OH YEAH! THE PARTY! In other slayer news, Ain't It Cool: Coaxial News' Big Buh-Bye Buffy Blast on May 20 is moving forward at breakneck pace. Venue and “suggested contributions” are not finalized (and remember, we haven’t officially invited anyone yet, so enough with the panic!), but we’re getting really close. Much will be in place before month’s end. Next weekend like, as Mal Reynolds might put it.

(We've already finalized the party's key poster art, collaborated upon by Eric Wight (who had much to do with "Buffy: The Animated Series"), Ain't It Cool's own Harryhead mastermind Cartuna, and - Harry Knowles himself!!)

The level of interest, frankly, far exceeded our expectations, and we’re sorting out venues massive enough to accommodate as many fans of the slayer as feasible. (We’re all pretty shocked at the number of people willing to fly to L.A. all the way from Seattle, Boston, New York, Buenos Aires and London (which is in Europe) for this.) Our advice? If you’re a big fan, watch the site closely. When we put out the call, whatever venue we wind up with is going to fill up in a big dang hurry.

makes me laugh so hard! Other Jane Espeson episodes (she's written the most, after Joss and Marti): "Band Candy," "Gingerbread," "The Harsh Light of Day," "Pangs," "Doomed," "A New Man," "The Replacement," "Triangle," the completely genius "Checkpoint," the completely genius "I Was Made to Love You," "Intervention,' "After Life," "Flooded," the completely genius "Life Serial," the highly underrated "Doublemeat Palace," the completely genius "Same Time, Same Place," "Conversations with Dead People," "Sleeper," "First Date" and the Andrew-centric "Storyteller."

    a new Gilmore Girl

    by DyslexicHeart

I think Jane is going to do great on Gilmore Girls and I personally am glad that both Dean and Jess are moving on, Rory could do much better.

    a new Gilmore Girl

    by DyslexicHeart

I think Jane is going to do great on Gilmore Girls and I personally am glad that both Dean and Jess are moving on, Rory could do much better. I'm wondering where some other Buffy writers will end up. We know Marti is doing her own show and Doug Petrie is hopefully still writting the big screen adaptation of "Fantastic Four". I'm very interested to see where Drew Goddard and Firefly/Angel vet Tim Minear move on to next.

Great way to ruin a good show by making a shitty spinoff. Oh well, whatever gets the ratings, right?

  • March 22, 2003, 2:44 a.m. CST

This was the most pointless Buffy update I can remember.

    by Voice O. Reason

Anya was only supposed to be in two episodes? NO SHIT?!?!?! Tell us something that hasn't been common fucking knowledge since 1999! Oh, and one of the writers is moving over to Gilmore Girls? That's a shocker! "We were thinking about a potentials/Slayer school spin-off...until all the fucking crack wore off and we came to our senses!" I was expecting to read something romotely important (like Spike asks Buffy to marry him, she says "Yes," and then they're both obliterated by aliens with three get the idea).

FYI: Doug Petrie is no longer writing Fantastic Four

    by Total Geekazoid

It was announced about 2 weeks ago that a new writer has been hired by Fox to script the Fantastic Four movie. (His name escapes me at the moment, but he was heretofore unproduced.) Peyton Reed is still attached to direct, but Doug Petrie's draft is apparently now on the shelf.

    Buffy Animated portfolio

Whoa! Some really nice stuff there, too bad it never panned out. The art from Howard Stern's Doomsday series looks pretty sweet too! Can't wait to see the art for the finale party poster. Thanks Herc!

    Buffy/Angel wedding pic

    by Voice O. Reason

Funny how it looks eerily like that scene in "The Prom". Same clothes...same minister...same facial expressions...same empty church...Yeah, obviously they're going to scrap the whole Angle-loves-Cordy storyline to have Angel marry a woman he hasn't seen for years and won't appear on his show next year.

    by GordonCole123

The way to end Buffy? Have her be bitten by an ubervamp, and then transform into a vampire herself. Afterwards, she and Spike stick a cross between themselves and embrace. No spinoff. No incredibly lame-Cameron Hodge-Joss Whedon Ressurections...just death. Oh yeah, and Kennedy gets eaten by the puterfective gases of John Candy's corpse.

  • March 22, 2003, 12:41 p.m. CST

so, what was the interesting update bits?

    by KatieScarlett

seriously. if the real buffyverse actors didn't/couldn't commit to a spin-off, no need to ruin the beloved series/franchise with a POtentials spin-off!!!!! kennedy is annoying to say the best (i actually loathe the character and her attitude), the other girls are self-centered winners (i'm looking at you ronna), and yet others, because they aren't developed, i have no idea, so they get lumped in the self-centered category. the way the final 5 eps are playing out, ME writers and creator are ruining a beloved series. I've been a fan since ep 1.1, and if all those spoilers are true, that's an insult to us loyal fans. so, i hope all you ME people get sucked into another dimension! and yes, donnie, that wedding picture was part of buffy's dream back in season 3 i believe *although i could be wrong*.

    WHAT? NO SPINOFF??????

    by Demosthenes2

Well, grrr arrrgh indeed. Angel's probably a goner too. Life will feel quite different once the Buffyverse is closed; when something shitty happens, I won't be able to say, "Well, at least I have Buffy/Angel/new spinoff to look forward to."

Don't make it Kennedy. The only two I can barely stomach is Rona and the new skinny girl. Kennedy really bugs me.

    Rory the Vampire Slayer

    by Gellar's Ass

Suddenly Gilmore Girls becomes a darker and extremely bloody show as the town is overrun by vampires and, um, Yeti, I guess. Critics and fans are sharply divided as to whether the change is "genius," "way too derivative," or "fucking lame." In any case, ratings have never been higher, with the season's much-talked-about "Death of Romantic Lead What's-His-Face" setting the current high water mark for the show's Nielsons.

    Buffy Animated

    by IdFuckAvril

Those concept illustrations of the proposed Buffy animated series are SWEET, and definitely more worthy of a TB! What's the deal with the animation series? Is it ever going to happen? I could see this show on the Cartoon Network. They could get that woman who did the voice of Buffy in the Xbox game since SMG probably won't be voicing this.

  • March 23, 2003, 4:25 a.m. CST

    by jedimast3r

Unfortunately, the animated Buffy was shelved almost...2 months ago I think? Can't quite remember, but I was disappointed as well. As much as I hate to say it, is really is time for this show to bow out. I would like to see Angel in the main stage for awhile; if a Willow-based series doesn't take flight I'd love to see some Fred-lip-locking in Darth Rosenberg's future...imagine how frustrated ol' Wes will feel then. Ooo, and just think of the old Cordelia-Willow rivalry, eh?

  • March 23, 2003, 4:33 a.m. CST

    Slayer School....buahahahaha

    by jedimast3r

And oh yeah, the Slayer School idea }ahermharrypotterGAY{ and this whole potential slayer thing this season...ummm...aside it being completely stupid a la the Initiative (the Initiative!!! buahahahahahahhaahahahaaaaaaa)convinced me this show now lacks the richness, quirkiness, and complexities it had the first 3 seasons. The Anya ep was great, but aside from the Caufieldy goodness, the post-Mayor Wilkins Buffy is terrible. Here's hoping to great films in the future.

    Buffy Animated II

    by IdFuckAvril

Well crappers. At this rate, if Angel gets cancelled, then all Joss will have left is maybe doing Buffy as a Flash animation series on the Dark Horse Comics Web site. Ha.

Espenson on Gilmore, and those animated concept pics

    by Kiwi-1

Love Gilmore Girls, and I think Espenson is a very good writer. She'll be a good match for the show. I'm looking forward to her GG episodes. Looking at those concept drawings, I really really wish they ad made that animated show. That is such a perfect look that they developed and I hate the idea that we will never see animated Buffy.

Sorry to get yer hopes up, seems TV Tome renigged the info. They said a two disk, 8 ep marvel was in the wings... simply too good for this earth.

  • March 24, 2003, 2:40 a.m. CST

Good luck with the ME thing, but... I'm I wrong, or did you just SERIOUSLY SPOIL episode 22?

  • March 24, 2003, 4:58 a.m. CST

    by Hellsbuttmonkey

What about doing an Initiative-type spinoff? I know the Initiative was disbanded, but there is still military demon hunters out there. Just make sure Rileys not in it. I think it would keep the franchise going, but take it in a completely different direction so as not to make it a complete buffy/angel carbon copy. The slayer school idea is quite lame, it seems like somebody was listening to the star trek spinoff ideas when they were on about a starfleet academy show. NO. Another idea would be just to follow through with the Ripper idea. That seemed a good plan

Wondering if anyone heard this... Apparently Marsters was in Baltimore for a Con a few weeks ago. I heard third-hand that he went on some wacky "Morning Zoo" and was talking like a Spike spinoff was a done deal. Anything??
