Bits and Pieces about THUNDERBIRDS... no, Jimmie Vaughn was nowhere in sight!

Published at:  Mar 20, 2003 5:26:47 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with some fun little rumors about THUNDERBIRDS... yeah, based on that super-marionation show! I generally hate "concept cars" from real car companies. They always seem to still be thinking in terms of real cars... I want cars being designed by wackos that loved Big Daddy Roth, watched James Bond films, built kit cars and that actually own a car that makes you... "Coooooool" That being said, I bet this looks cool! Here's Simon...

Hey Harry,

I was sat on a train from London to Birmingham today opposite from a couple of suits from one of the London studios, and couldn't help but overhear some of their conversation.

They were discussing the new Thunderbirds movie ("directed by the guy who was number 2 in Star Trek") and about the locations that were being booked and scouted at the moment.

Apparently, there will be car chases and a helicopter chase filmed by the South Bank of London, possibly involving Grand Prix cars (for which they are attempting to get professional drivers to do cameos). This is to be done to scale as a sort of go-cart race - I don't know whether this is to be a nod to the origins of the series or not.

Also, Lady Penelope's pink car is being redesigned for the film by Ford as a concept car.

Hope you can use some of that.

Ta ta.

Simon

    Lady Penelope

    by lord ted

Not that I give a toss but that posh bird from Die Another Day would be good as Lady Penelope. She looks the part and is just as wooden.

    Twelve years too late

    by arcadian del sol

Its over a decade too late for this movie to be anything but a burp on the bbc. It wont do well in the US because lets face it, about 2% of the population watches "Tech TV" on cable television, and about 5% of that 2% probably sticks around to watch "that old show with the puppets."

This one will score six yawns on the big 'who the hell cares ' chart.

    Thunderbirds is an original concept

    by shadokp

Thunderbirds is one of the most original ideas that really has not been copied over the years. If done right (big budget and no puppets), the movie would be like a present day Irwin Allen disaster film with a fantastic futuristic rescue. Of course the version being made by Frakes seems to be straying from that concept quite a bit but it could be a good film nevertheless. By the way, Thunderbirds is still incredibly popular in the UK and that is why they are doing it. I would be more interested in the Gerry Anderson helmed Captain Scarlet CG series being worked on for 2005. Check out

for news on this and the TB movie as well as a conceptual drawing of Lady Penelope's FAB1.

    Thunderbirds

    by enemakid

Thunderbirds was a super cool show...the graphic novel like things were pretty awful... while on the subject, can anyone help me... i remember watching this puppet animation show a while back that was set partly in space, partly on earth (NOT Captain Scarlet, NOT Fireball) and featured, well, a rescue team...i dont remember the name, what i do remember is that there was an Oriental man on board one of the spaceships and the show also had these robots that looked like grey bowling balls... I bet this sounds stupid but could anyone help me with the name of the show?

    wasn't Riker Number one?

    by heleno

This might do very well. Blue Peter, a lame kid's show in the UK, was mobbed by requests for plans when they made a model Tracy Island out of two pipe cleaners and some sticky back plastic (or whatever). Apparently thousands of people had all these pipecleaners lying about and were desperate to use them to make a replica of the hit location. And seriously, if there are people like that out there, you can bet your nuts they'll be watching the movie.

    Thunderbirds are GO!

    by ginta1971

Ah yes, ONLY the USA market matters when it comes to film. I mean that nearly 400 Billion Titanic did outside of the USA doesn't matter. Or the fact that the Mr. Bean film did better outside of the USA than it did IN the USA. But I digress from my original intent of even hitting the "talkback" button....how, and why, would anyone redesign Lady Penolope's car? Why would you want? This is like saying "Oh, let's make a Speed Racer movie, but you know, no one cares about the Mach V, let's redesign it." Or let's say (god forbid) someone wanted to do a remake of Star Wars someday "Boy, that Millenium Falcon was a hunk of junk. Design me something racing fins!" There is just no good reason to redesign her car when the first design worked so well for the character.
